A Day of Tune-Ups
For those of us suffering from a footie withdrawal, today holds a lot of promise. Ahead of us is a full day of pre Euro 2012 tune-ups, starting with Denmark up against Brazil at 9:30 and culminating with Roy Hodgson's first match in charge of England against Norway. All of these sides will be kicking off their tournaments in two weeks time - today we'll get a chance to see what they're looking like. Join me!

Morning, chaps - I've got what looks like an Al Jazeera link up through First Row - Link 2 here:
http://www.firstrowsports.eu/watch/124400/2/watch-brazil-vs-denmark.html
Still haven't seen team sheets for Brazil v. Denmark. I'll try and pick them up in a moment. Teams in the tunnel now.
By the way, on this day of international friendlies FSC has decided to favor us with the L1 Playoff Final between Huddersfield and Not a Big Club (yawn).
The Danish fans having a nice sing song with their anthem now.
Here's the part of Brazil side I picked out: Jefferson, Thiago Silva, Juan, Marcelo, Sandro, Oscar, Romulo, Hulk, Daibao,
Relatively unfamilar side there.
Morten Olsen is putting out a richly experienced side, especially at the back with Sorensen, Poulson and Agger all familiar to us.
Some odd sun patches created by the domed stadium here in Hamburg, Germany.
Slow, patient start here from Brazil, concentrating on not giving Denmark the ball.
Big Nik Bendtner is the obvious target man up front for Denmark and he has a first half-chance there. Snuffed out.
Leandro Damiao is a new name for me but he's catching the eye early on with some delicate touches and dangerous runs. He's apparently a 22 year striker at Internacional in Brazil.
GOAL! Hulk scores with a left footed drive but it's really a howler from Thomas Sorensen in the Danish goal. He had a similar horror moment in Bolton's last match in the Premiership a couple of weeks back.
1-0 Brazil!
It's all Brazil now as they seek to press their advantage.
2-0 Brazil - looked like an own goal!
Morning Bob
I will be around for some the England game I think
Is there no games on the TV!!!
Christian Poulson coughed up the ball in a dangerous position and when Hulk squared it, it came off a prostrate Niki Zimling. Denmark are falling apart here!
Damiao is caught offside for the third time early on. If he can time the right runs here, he'll be in for a third. Denmark playing a dangerously high line.
Morning, Dave!
The only match on FSC is Huddersfield v. Not a Big Club - the L1 Playoff Final.
Damiao timed his run well this time but his touch was heavy and Sorensen collected.
I saw that.
The link you gave me for the match is just showing me the pinwheel!!
Own goal boy Zimling now picks up a yellow for a hack on Oscar. Not his best game so far.
On this evidence so far, Denmark will clearly be the bottom club in Group B - the Group of Death. They could get absolutely mullered by Germany, Holland and Portugal.
Try Link 3 on this one:
http://www.firstrowsports.eu/watch/124400/2/watch-brazil-vs-denmark.html
It's Al Jazeera coverage but English language commentary.
Bingo... why didn't I try that myself
Brazil were off to the races again and Sorensen was happy to collect from Damiao. They could be three or four down already!
Are Brazil going to be the traditional Brazil in two years time or are they going to b playing just with reputation like they have done since 1982
That's why they pay me the big bucks, mate. ;-}
It's hard to tell from this side, which is presumably experimental. The only player I suspect will start in two years time is Hulk. Maybe Thiago Silva. But given that they're blooding Sandro - the defensive middie at Spurs, I doubt whether we're going to get a return to the jogo bonito any time soon, sadly.
BTW, I think Wednesday are the Big Club... bigger than United
Sorensen is off... after 25 minutes.... has me made mistakes?
Dear oh dear - Sorenson is being yanked off after only 20 minutes. Stephan Andersen coming on for him. I wonder if that's the last we'll see of Sorensen in the Danish kit.
Yeah - the first one was a real howler. Decent strike from Hulk from distance but it went right under Sorenson.
Surely they'll have a good team as hosts
Was that Rafa? He is a liability... he fouls too much
I didn't notice until now that Kahlenberg came on for Schone. I suppose Olsen had seen enough. Denmark have been atrocious.
Just turned on the TV for the Wembley match
Not good seeing Grayson on the wrong sideline
Oh - I think Brazil will be strong, no doubt, and perhaps one of the favorites. But I'd imagine they'll play like most international sides with two defensive middies and keep it tight at the back.
Don't mention Grayson in my presence. I'm still in mourning.
Huddersfield's shirts look like Wednesday.. we do have a derby.... well we have a Yorkshire derby anyway
French striker Remy ruled out of the Euros
Is he any good?
I want a Brazil team that EVERYONE thinks they are!
Never even 'eard of him!
Well, I'd like for all of the teams to play more attacking football.
Look at Holland - bags of talent but you know they're going to thug it up.
Oh - Bendtner was in there with a header that Jefferson saved. Wouldn't have counted - he's flagged offside.
Where is this game being held?
Brazil have definitely taken their feet off the pedal in the last ten minutes. Denmark getting some chances now.
It's in Hamburg.
Some typically Brazilian defending there almost lets Kahlenberg in.
USA vs Scotland tonight the NBC Sport Channel at 8 pm
It is the same channel that was showing the Stanley Cup Playoffs
Seems to be all Huddersfield attacking so far at Wembley. That suits me.
Just looked it up.
It is being played in Hamburg
Beat me to it
Not sure I get that channel. I'll be at the US v. Brazil match in DC on Wednesday night.
Do you want Gr... the bloke on the sideline... to come back to haunt you next season?
I just said that. At 10:07. Wakey, wakey, mate.
Not really but I'd prefer that to having to deal with the Blades.
Three nil!
GOAL! After all that Danish attacking, it's Brazil who score. Great solo effort from the man of the moment - Hulk.
3-0!
I am sure you do
There is no way you couldn't have watched all the hockey in Buffalo.
Did you have Versus? It took place of it
I'm not sure that Denmark could get out of Group A - let alone Group B - the Group of Death. Germany, Holland and Portugal must be licking their lips at this display - crikey!
And now Agger is limping off - they're really in trouble!
Yeah - I had Versus. Never watch any hockey. Can't be bothered.
What's your zip code?
Neither of these sides deserves to be in the Championship, on this display. Useless.
14048 - are you mailing me something?
Decent hit there by Poulson and Jefferson nearly fumbled it in.
Channel 44
The Galaxy vs Dynamo is on this afternoon and the US and Scotland in the evening
I needed your zip to find your channel line up
Ah - I see. I'll try to check that out. I've got a cookout that I'm going to at 5:30.
Half-time in Hamburg. Boos from the Danish crowd. They've been outclassed.
3-0!
I just turned the link off.
Over 100 degrees at Wembley
Tony has said the weather is a scorcher
I hope it stays nice for next week. There is a big do at the Worlington cricket ground for the Diamond Jubllee
I'd love to go to that!
The Republic have kicked off against Bosnia. 0-0 so far.
Not sure why there are all these "Diamond Jubilee" celebrations this summer. Liz ascended to the throne in February. And then her Coronation was in the summer of 1953. Next summer would be the time.
Nocito Update
The Windies had an 8th wicket partnership of 194 to propel them to 370 all out
England have replied 97 for 1 on Day 2 of the second test at Trent Bridge
0-0 at Wembley coming up on the half hour mark - yawn.
I agree
When did they celebrate Q. Victoria?
I never thought someone would beat her rain!
Classic Python
Queen Victoria Stakes Horse Race
It's Queen Victoria followed by Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria comes along the outside...
I've just noticed that there's a link for Soccer Saturday:
http://www.firstrowsports.eu/watch/124459/1/watch-soccer-saturday.html
Yeah - Liz only has three years to beat her record - she should easily do that.
Lots of cricket news for you on the SS link.
He REIGN
Love that Python sketch. Almost as good as the Upper Class Twit of the Year Race.
Now they're doing rugger. It's "Anything But Soccer Saturday." WTF?
Teams coming back out for the second half at Hamburg.
Wow... all sports Sports Saturday
Wonder if it is called Sports Saturday instead of Soccer Saturday
Is this just Sky Sports News?
The link calls it "Soccer Saturday" and I was assuming that they'd follow the friendlies. But now they're on to golf.
Half an hour gone in the Ireland-Bosnia match. 0-0. Not a good sign for the Republic.
Coming up on half-time at Wembley - 0-0. Do we really have to take one of these worthless sides into the Championship?
I think it just Sky Sports News.
SS is on SSN so it will probably change when most of the matches start
A lull in the match in Hamburg with the wave going on around the crowd.
Let's hope so.
Tea Time in Nottingham
123 for 1
I hope that there's a bit of build-up on SS before the England match. The 5 Live coverage has been brilliant this week. They had The Turnip on reliving his loss to Norway.
I'd go for a spot of tea with some cheese on toast right about now.
Huddersfield fans have had enough. They're off to see if there are any pies on offer at the Wembley catering.
Half time at the Boiling Wembley
No goals
Two rubbish sides.
RoI are scoreless at half time against Bosnia
Half time between Ireland and Bosnia - 0-0. Only Brazil seem to feel like scoring today.
GOAL! Big Nik Bendtner gets one back, albeit in an offside position.
3-1.
Bugger... England lose a wicket directly after Tea
Next week's match at Wembley against Belgium is on FSC.... Goal-line technology to be used!!
I'm saving my mojo for England v. Norway this afternoon. I like the sound of the side that Woy is thinking about putting out today. He's somewhat forced to play a youthful side because of the absence of the Chelski players. So Phil Jones, Jags, Lescott and Baines across the back, Young and Carroll up front.
What day is that friendly?
Poland v. Slovakia has kicked off. 0-0 after 15 minutes.
Next Saturday... I think
Yup.. next Saturday.. Kick off at 12:15
Late substitution - Juliano on for Lucas
Sweet - I'll look forward to that.
This one in Hamburg is petering out to an inevitable Brazil win.
An hour gone at Wembley - 0-0 Really?!
I am doing a lot of stuff around the house this morning. That is why I keep buggering off
Into the second half between Ireland and Bosnia - 0-0.
No worries, mate. Any news on the reunion trip? Can I book it?
I would love to go but I can't see myself leaving Kathy the way she feels right now.
i know it is a few weeks away but I just wouldn't feel right at this moment.
I am torn
Understood. If you can't do it, that's alright. We'll miss you. But I'm there on the 9th - no worries.
Full-time in Hamburg - Brazil run out easy winners - 3-1. The Danes will be put to the sword in Group B.
Huddersfield shout for a pen - but that would have been really harsh.
Sheff United being a big club... what about Huddersfield
One of only four clubs to win three English Championships in a row
United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Town... not a bad list to be on
It's looking more like SS now - Dave Bassett commenting on the Playoff Final.
9th? I thought it was the Friday
Neither is a big club - they're both L1 level.
Sorry - June 8th - the Friday.
A HAT-TRICK OF LEAGUE TITLES!!!
Still no goals in the three matches being played right now. As you like to say, "it's the big rectangle at both ends of the pitch - put the ball in it!"
I know I know... that means the Wanderes are a big club
I don't really think either of these clubs are big clubs
I think Wednesday are because of the crowds they get
That was in the bloody 20s! Port Vale were a big club back then too. Times change.
Poland have taken the lead through Perquis on the 30 minute mark - that will give them some confidence. I rate them as a darkhorse in Group A.
More rugger coverage on SS.
Still 0-0 at Wembley coming down to the last 15 minutes. This one's going to penalties - mark my words.
Is there some record of every host making it through the group stages like the World Cup... didn't SA mess that up last time out
Nope.. there will be a late goal
I hate the shade at Wembley
Half the stadium in Sun and the other in shade
That never happened at the old place... why did they have to switch the direction
Yeah, South Africa became the first host team not to make it out of the group stages of the WC. I'll check with the Euros.
Remember, the first ever actual Euro tournament was 1980
Before that, there were group stages and then a two legged quarter final. The final four would go to the host country.
From 1960 to 1976, only four teams participated in the final tournament, including hosts, so that limits it somewhat.
Group stage was introduced in 1980 with Italy hosting. Only two teams emerged from the groups to play the final - Germany and Belgium. Italy were runners-up in the group, so played in the 3rd/4th match-up. Does that count?
I guess it does!!
France as hosts won in 1984. West Germany as hosts were losing semi-finalists to Holland in 1988. Sweden as hosts made it out of the group at the expense of England under the leadership of the Turnip in 1992. England lost in the semis to Germany in 1996. Netherlands and Belgium hosted in 2000. The Dutch emerged from the group but I doubt Belgium did. Hosts Portugal were beaten in the final by Greece. 2008 - Austria and Switzerland hosted - I doubt whether either of them emerged from the groups. So there is precedence.
Goal for Ireland
The Republic have scored and Packy Bonner is describing it on SS. Shane Long with a header.
The crowd at Wembley seems happy enough - and red as lobsters. Do they not sell sunscreen in Blighty?
Harlequins are champions of England!!!!!
Good morning UWS and BD. I am watching the League 1 Playoff Final on FSC. It is 0-0 between the Blades and Huddersfield with one minute plus stoppage time remaining.
I would not like to be on one of those Tube trains going back from Wembley stuffed to the gills with sweaty Yorkshiremen.
Two minutes of stoppage time from Nouveau Wemberley.
Morning, MUR - great to have you on board. I don't think either of these sides deserves the right to play on the hallowed turf of Elland Road in the Championship next season. What do you think?
I would prefer Huddersfield so Simon Grayson can take his Terriers to ER.
If you hold a gun to my head, I would too. But I'd prefer to play neither of them.
I read the EURO comments and it is true that neither Switzerland nor Austria emerged from the group stages, so there is a case where both hosts have failed to qualify from the Group. It could possibly happen again.
Full-time at Wembley - 0-0 of course. Extra time to come.
I would say the same , but for Simon Grayson and anyway , local derbies are fantastic!
You're probably right, MUR, but I just see Poland sneaking out at the expense of the Czechs. Weak group there. Ukraine have no chance.
Cheltenham vs Crewe tomorrow at Wemberley. England's supposed third best keeper played 27 games on loan at Cheltenham this season.
The problem for us with local derbies is that the Yorkshire sides get up for them with us. Those should be easy wins but we can easily drop points. We lost Donny, I suppose, but we'll gain another fellow Yorkshire club.
Poland is a possibility and it is a sick joke of a group. Otherwise, Poland would be out early. I am still skeptical about the Poles.
Extra time is underway at Wemberley!
I'm on to this link now for the Germany v. Switzerland match:
http://www.firstrowsports.eu/watch/124465/1/watch-switzerland-vs-germany.html
The Yanks host the Jocks this evening in Jacksonville. How will the Jocks do in the heat and humidity? What purpose does this serve other than to get ready for the World Cup qualifier with Antigua?
I am not so sure that it will be an entertaining match? How did the Irish do today?
This appears to be the same coverage that I had on earlier this morning for Brazil v. Denmark with an Al Jazeera feed of Arabic speakers on the panel. I'm hoping for the same English commentary for the match.
Ireland appear to be wrapping up a 1-0 win against Bosnia. That will give them a bit of confidence going into the tournament. I still don't see them getting out of Group C.
Yes - English commentary again!
It is really warm at Wemberley by Yorkshire standards . How will there be a decent standard if play in those conditions? Just wide by the Blades.
A mighty impressive front line for the Germans - Klose, Ozil, Khedira. No Muller - that surprises me but perhaps the Bayern players - Muller, Schweinsteiger and such are being rested.
Yes - no need for the traditional meat pie and Bovril half-time treat today.
I agree with you about the Irish. I don't think Trap picked the strongest squad available. He went with the players that got him there and is going with cynical old school Serie A tactics.
Oh - first chance for the Germans - Klose laid off to Khedira.
Spain have also kicked off against Serbia and Portugal against Macedonia.
Plenty of water and sports drinks today. I would think the Bayern players are being rested. Also, Klose may not be first choice at this stage of his career.
All Blades in extra time as the Terriers had to block an effort.
Simon makes a change as Alan Lee is on for Ward.
I'd still pick Klose ahead of Mario Gomez.
The Blades have a free kick just outside the box due to a daft challenge.
Free kick opportunity for the Blades now.
Hey MUR
I am here and about today
Probably so. Super Mario is not so Super when it matters most.
Hello UWS. How have you been?
Yanks v Jocks is on NBC Sports Channel tonight at 8 pm
Germany racking up the corners already.
Will you guys be watching that?
I still can't believe how many Liverpool players are in the England squad!
Gerrard.. yes
Downing ?
Johnson?
Henderson?
DId you see that Johnson has a hurt toe and there was talk of replacing him?
Micah Richards? NO... a Liverpool back up.. Kelly!!!
The German corners have been poor so far.
The only one I'd have in the squad is Glen Johnson - the gammy toe may force him out of the reckoning though. I'm happy with Phil Jones in his place, although I'd prefer Micah Richards.
Bloody short ones?
Also Kuyyt for Holland and Reina for Spain. Can you believe Twilight made the Spanish squad and Lindy is in the Danish squad?
I've got a cook-out starting at 5:30 which might prevent me from watching. It is at Alex (The Red Devil) house, so we might sneak off from the crowd and watch. I don't know.
No - traditional ones but ones that have hit the first Swiss defender.
I agree. Also Agger for Denmark. I think these players are capable of better and a victim of poor coaching . Perhaps Roberto can get the most out of them
0-0 at Wembley nearly at half time of extra time. Can we please shoot these two sides now?
I wish these two sides could SHOOT!
Decent run and shot by a Blade
Agger limped off this morning with what looked a bad injury. He may be done.
half time of extra time
FIRST SHOT ON TARGET... RIDICULOUS!
Nearly 1-0 to the Blades as Quinn went on a solo run and forced a superb save from the Huddersfield keeper. Maguire of the Blades was booked. Halftime of extra time and still 0-0. The announcer said it was the Blades first shot on target the entire match!
Trent Bridge update
193 for 2
Poland still 1-0 up over Slovakia in the 60th minute.
Oh - Derdyop had a looping headed chance there from the free kick.
Strauss 80 not out
Pietersen 28 not out
Windies were all out for 370
Still a way to go for England
The second half of stupid extra time has kicked off. Neither side deserves to be promoted.
Thank you, MUR - my point entirely.
Corner to the Terriers.
