Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Bad Precursor for the Germans

The Germans and Greeks have of course met on the pitch before with a great deal at stake. Anyone not familiar with that epic encounter should check out the highlights here: Monty Python's International Philosophy

A classic! What I love most about this sketch is that the eventual goal is actually fairly good.

Thanks for the post, Red Devil. I don't think that your Mannschaft have much to fear from the Greek philosophers today.

You never know. The ref can clearly play a part here, and as Marx attempted to point out, the goal was clearly offsides (even if it is a nice header goal, as it was when they scored on Portugal to win in 2004).

Fantastic Thread!!

News out of the German camp is that
The Duran Duran Boy is going to drop Mario Gomez, Thomas Muller and Lukas Podolski for today's match

Miroslav Klose, Adre Schurrle and Marco Reus will start!

Bit of a surprise there!

The match is being billed as
"The Debt derby"

Just watched it again...."and Marx thinks it was offside"

Let's hope for the same score today

I was watching the first half on the couch trying to get the school laptop computer to work but no luck.
It keeps wanting me to lock into my school account. I don't know how to get rid of the system!

ALL GERMANY!!!

1-0 to the Germans... should have been 6!!!

Wonder what the LOBers are doing!

Here they come for the second half

This has been a German cake walk!

Can the Greeks change things around in the second half? They have done so in their other matches

Looks like it is heading toward a power line up in the semis

From The Guardian

Greece make a double change at half time, with Fanis Gekas and Giorgos Fotakis replacing Giorgos Tzavellas and, er, someone else whose names I'll type here in a minute.

Looks like all the Germans have changed their shirts at half time... they're all clean again

Greece were level for six minutes

They almost get another chance... the sub blasts it over

Greece almost hit back immediately. Fanis Gekas has definitely made a difference and it is he who shoots from distance, but it flies well over the bar. It is going to be a cracking final half-hour.

Sorry, UWS, I don't know how we left you all alone! But, I have put the baby (and wife) to bed. I missed the Greek goal, but I have been happy with the last few minutes.

If the result stands, Loew will look like a brain, but if it had gone wrong. Man.

Great cracker from Reus.

Just score all your goals today Germany!!

None against England please!

Klose has been a little bit awkward as a goal scorer in the last few years, but you can see why Loew chose him. He plays very well with the other players, and his pass to Oezil there was excellent for a scoring forward type.

I agree... very risky team selection!

BBC Radio 5 live's Danny Mills
"Germany are like a machine. They have a knack of getting results and putting in performances when they are not playing well. The incredible thing is the team is so young - they could be together for the next three or four tournaments."

7 minutes to go for the Greeks not to concede again

Indeed, I believe Germany is not quite skilled enough to create something against a squad that is sitting back. They looked at their worst versus Portugal (who are a pretty decent squad after all), and were very laborious this first half. I will give them some leeway since the field conditions look slow and tedious.

Keeper fumbles another shot and Gomez almost nets the rebound...he has fumbled a lot of them!

I think I would have scored for the Germans if I were out there and had done nothing other than speculate on the Greek keeper spilling so many rebounds.

Tough call. Definitely ball to hand, but it altered the path of the shot and his arm was a bit far off of his body.

Better to get the unlucky call now when it does not matter.

4:35 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

In to 2 minutes of added time!

How is that possible!
They say it is 30 seconds per goal... we've had five this half!

wasn't a foul, but it always gets called when players raise their hand and place it on the opponent's back

I think refs use some discretion. When there is no reason to extend the game any longer, they usually cut extra time shorter. When the game is really tight, they usually add too much time.

Thanks for keeping LOB home fires burning lads. I enjoyed reading your comments. MUR, Gooner and I were at the Lucky Bar in downtown DC. Great craic in there with mostly Germans but a fair number of Greek fans who got very excited when that equalizer went in.

Very powerful performance by the Germans today, with some real confidence shown by Khedira and Reus off the volley. Even if England manage to get past Italy on Sunday, I don't fancy us doing it again against the Germans. I have to imagine that they'll win it all now.
