Euro 2012 - Day 12 - England Expects!
It's another day of reckoning for Roy Hodgson's "New England." So far, it's been a job well done. Through two gutsy (and skilful) performances, Woy's babes have taken themselves to within a point of qualifying for the quarter-final stage of Euro 2012. But they can't be complacent today against co-hosts Ukraine. Roon is back in the fold, so it's all systems go, right? Don't be a numpty - join me from 2:45 pm EST onward to cheer on the boys - come on, England!

Here are the permutations for tonight:
• England will be through with a draw. If they lose, they have to hope France lose by enough so that England at least end level with Les Bleus on goal difference and goals scored (as England have a superior coefficient, 33.563 to France's 30.508).
• Ukraine will be through with a win and out with any other result.
• France will be through with a draw. If they lose, they would only be out if England lose but at the same time move level with them on either goal difference or goals scored.
• Sweden are out.
Can't wait for our LOB reunion this week - so far, here's what we have to look forward to watching together:
Thursday - Czech Republic v. Portugal
Friday - Germany v. Greece
Saturday - Spain v. Group D Runner Up
Sunday - Italy v. Group D Winner
Alright, then - the team news is in from Donetsk:
England: Hart, Johnson, Terry, Lescott, Cole, Milner, Gerrard,
Parker, Young, Rooney, Welbeck.
Subs: Green, Kelly, Walcott, Henderson, Carroll, Baines, Jones, Jagielka, Downing, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Defoe, Butland.
Ukraine: Pyatov, Gusev, Khacheridi, Selin, Rakitskiy,
Yarmolenko, Tymoschuk, Konoplianka, Garmash, Devic, Milevskiy.
Subs: Koval, Kucher, Shevchenko, Aliev, Voronin, Shevchuk,
Rotan, Seleznyov, Mykhalyk, Nazarenko, Butko, Goryainov.
Referee: Viktor Kassai (Hungary)
As expected, Woy has made one change - and it's Rooney in for big Andy Carroll. There was a bit of a shout for Theo in for Jamie Milner but Woy has stayed faithful to the Citeh man.
If we need a change or two, I'd expect Theo and Carroll off the bench in the second half. Of course - I'll be hoping that we'll be 4-0 up and coasting by then, right?
The coverage has started on ESPN, with scenes of England and Croatia coming off the bench.
Sorry, that's Ukraine of course. Their talisman Andriy Shevchenko is injured and won't be available today, thankfully.
I've got the lucky shirt and scarf on as usual from the start.
Earlier today, Wayne Rooney tweeted the pre-match tunes he'd be listening to on a compilation entitled Wazza's Pre-Match Tunes that includes such musical luminaries as Deacon Blue, Artic Monkeys, Stereophonics, Boon Jovi, Cat Stevens, Damien Rice, James Morrison, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen and the Hummingbirds.
Good afternoon, BD. I am here to join you,so there is no danger of me being a numpty today,LOL.
The best result would be an England win and France draw.I like England's chances better against Italy than Spain.
I think Theo off the bench against the slow, inflexible Ukrainians is a decent tactic, especially in the humid conditions. Also, the loss of Sheva will hurt as despite his age and loss of pace, he is still their best striker by far.
Welcome, mate. I wanted to mention that you were absolutely correct with Lothar Matteus but the Frenchman was Lillian Thuram rather than Barthez. Nice job with the guesses!
I agree with you - I'd love to see the Swedes get something off France today.
Debuchy and Mexes are playing with yellows going into this match. Could make it difficult for them in the quarters.
The Swedes have apparently already booked their flights home. Wish we were playing them tonight.
Unfortunately, we may be asking for the impossible from the Swedes. I wonder if they would be better off axing Zlatan from the squad as he seems to be more of a disruption than anything else.
I am off for a well needed shower before kickoff.
Get to it, mate - I'll expect you back and squeaky clean for the kick-off.
Still at work... fingers crossed we're two up when I get home!
Hiya, Dave - we'll hope to see you soon!
I am sure going to miss seeing you guys. Are you all traveling tomorrow?
Yep - I'm in the car early in the morning and David is flying in at 1pm. I'll still have Steve book a ticket for you - what do you think?
Or should we drive up Friday night and pick you up? I'm serious!
No... I am being a goood husband
ESPN has the England v. Ukraine match, while I'll have the Sweden v. France match on the laptop.
Booo!
Ten minutes to kick-off time - time for a blast of the "Three Lions."
I am back squeaky clean after being drenched from walking the dog. I agree with your last three statements. Just like you, England on the telly and France on the desktop
England will be playing in the humid ,wet Donetsk while France play in Kiev.
Right then - the sides are coming out.
"Three Lions on a shirt - Jules Rimet still gleaming!"
WOW! Larry White's lads are undefeated in 23!I don't see the Swedes breaking that streak.
"Send her victorious...la la la"
Come on, Wazza - do us proud tonight, mate! I want a hat-trick!
I would favor Roon vs the static Tymoschuk
I want an early goal to silence the crowd.
The link is not doing much better than yesterday
I agree, BD. The Ukrainians seem like fair weather as Alex described the Italian fans
That Magyar ref is a decent ref. The best Engerlund can ask from an official
Kick off time - come on, you England!
We're off from Donetsk as there is a moment of silence for the passing of a French broadcaster.
We're off from Kiev.
Ukraine trying to punk England from the start - Lescott clears.
Konoplianka shoots - I like it!
Miles wide from the young Konoplianka.
A Naughty foul by Svensson on Ribery
Now a naughty foul by Diarra.
Hoofed clear by Ukraine. England will take that all night.
Slow start from England - not what I wanted.
Headed wide by Toivonen off a cross from the olsson twin.
True, BD, but France did the same against the Ukraine and ended up victorious.
Too much possession for the home side.
Seb Larsson heads right at lloris as France have started slow too.
I was actually expecting that and that may be part of Woy's tactics.
First time on the ball for Wazza - go on, son!
Garmasch has a go - not too far away but Hart watched it over.
Oh! just over by Garmash from long range.
COME ON ENGERLUND!
USeless free kick from Seb Larsson.
Good tackling back by Lescott as Yarmolenko threatened. Come on, England!
PHEW! A Ukraininan player was through , but Cashley recovered to make the tackle and Issaksson saves well from Robery
What the hell, Wazza!
Sorry that was Lescott, not Cashley
I am home.... the boys say Ukraine have been well on top and Rooney is England's worst player
Miles over by Ben Arfa
Roon is having one of those moments again - come on!
Good afternoon, UWS. Ukraine have had more possession, but have not really threatened.
Useless cross by Cole... hopeless
I agree - Roon is looking like he did in South Africa - I told you we shouldn't pick him!
Sweden missed a sitter as Mexes had a poor back headed, Lloris was caught out, and Toivonen missed an open goal, shooting in the side netting.
Great block there! But phew! Come on!
Naughty by Devich on Young,.
Horrible attempt of a clearance... thankfully, Parker blocks the shot with his meat and two veg
I don't want Roon sit back and create... I want him to score
That's a bit better - decent cross from Johnson toward Roon. Corner.
A cross intended for Roon is cleared for a corner.
Strange punch there by the keeper
Punched out - shame.
Pyatov punches away the corner from Stevie G
First time I've heard the England fans chanting tonight. Don't hear the band, though - have they been banned again?
If Sweden had not missed that sitter then England would be leading the group.
Platini should be banned.
On the brighter side, we're 75 minutes away from the quarters at this rate. But I don't want it that way. I want a win!
JT did enough o cut out the cross and divert it to Hart
Roon didn't go for that head on... I thought he was raring to go
true, BD. It will not be easy though
And of course the French are still at 0-0 with the Swedes, who have already booked their in-flight meals home to Stockholm. As it is, France and England go through.
I hear the england fans to the point where one would think England is the home team
Oh - Terry blocked that one out and Ukraine are totally on top. Do. Not. Like. It.
Great block off a shot from Kornolianka and Tymoschuk shot miles over.
I agree. Engerlund needs to do better
The other match kicked off a minute later due to a minute of silence.
Has anyone been a force going forward for England yet?
Useless shot from Seb Larsson after Zlatan laid off a long pass.
Not really, UWS.
WHY!!!
I just don't get it.
Why doe England do this every tournament? They have players that have won the Champions League.... they should be used to the pressure
Two ball on the pitch - it's dropball time.
USeless from Zlatan. The most overrated player in the world.
Ukraine get another chance as Young loses the flight of the ball!
COME ON
Poor give away by Young and Gusev shot just over.
Oh - that was really close - England do look nervous - I agree with Ian Darke. There's no need for that.
Good run from Glen Johnson - he's been the one bright light so far.
Good run by Glen and Ratkisov should have been booked for that foul.
Come on Stevie... good cross..ooh... almost by Roon and no one was there for the keeper muff
Oh - great delivery from Gerrard. Why wasn't someone on the end of that!?
Great ree kick from Stevie G and Piatov fumbled it out for a corner. Lescott missed the header off the corner.
We're slightly, slightly better in the last five minutes now. Got to build on that.
Another good free kick opportunity now.
Another free kick chance.... did he dive there?
Tymoschuk needs to shut it as that was an obvious foul on Young.
Head tennis off the free kick and it goes out for a goal kick.
The set pieces have been our only bright spark - we look dangerous on every one of them.
Shit cross from Milner there - come on, Jamie!
Useless cross by Milner... no one running in at the back post.. where's AY
Useless cross from Milner from England's best attack of the match
Oh - how did Roon miss that?! What was he doing?!
I don't think he even jumped for it?! Get him off!
BLOODY HELL... GREAT PASS BY TERRY AND YOUNG and then ROON does PATHETIC
Carroll would have buried that
Carroll would have buried that header - no worries.
I agree.England should have had the lead.
This is my fear - Roon never shows up for England the way that he does for United. If we manage to scrape through this one, I'd drop him.
Nice clean save by Hart
OH - great save by Hart. How good is it to have him back there.
Great save by Hart.
I agree, BD, but I don;t think WOY agrees with us.
A shot from Young is deflected for a corner after a superb long ball from Stevie G
Half an hour gone in both matches - 0-0. Very nervy from both England and France.
JT should have done better there too
Headed by JT off the corner.
Now it's Terry who mistimes his header. A free one. But he balloons it over.
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer in Donetsk:
"Wayne Rooney has just produced a shocking headed miss from Young's cross - think Pele might have fancied putting that one in even now."
If it is 0-0 at the half then all three of Ukraine's halftime scores will be 0-0/
LOL to Phil McNulty.
Agreed, UWS. A glaring miss . Sweden had one too.
Not far over by Ben Arfa
Oh - good run from Ashley Young and a dangerous cross in. Should have had a runner.
Shoot from there all day mate
replay of Young's cross... not brilliant and Milner attempted to jump over the ball
Weak long range effort from Ukraine. England have primarily restricted Ukraine to long range efforts.
Internet was out for a while, but from what I can see, England is under no real threat. They are dominant in the air and have the only players with real pace. They have not done much yet, but they don't need to. They can strike on the counter or in the air if necessary. Ukraine is very naive on defense and very weak in the air. England could be up 2-0.
Blokhin is complaining about time wasting already in the 36th minutes.
Blokhin is losing his mind on the sideline now!
USeless cross from Stevie G after a Ukrainian defensive error.
Terry has a chance to cross .... of course... it sucks
WHERE IS STEVE COPPELL WHEN YOU NEED HIM
Thanks for the vote of confidence, Red Devil. Good to have you on board.
Come on England... just score
Good afternoon, Red Devil. I agree . This is similar to Ukraine vs France.
Ribery's getting a touch of the magic spray now.
EPL experts, enlighten me. I have been singularly unimpressed with Milner. Who might come into question as an alternative?
If Oleg is losing it then that is good for engerlund as that always transfers to the players
England break... and then pass it back... great fast break there!
The bloody wave has been going on around the ground now.
Theo will probably come on for him as he did vs Sweden
Overambitious effort on the volley from Parker. Those Ukraine fans are still smiling - I want them weeping!
Useless break and a useless shot from Parker.
Anyone else but Downing would do for me
Ox, Walcott or even Welbeck or Rooney out there with Carroll up top
MOTD's Mark Lawrenson in Donetsk:
"The real problem at the moment is that there has been no relationship between Welbeck and Rooney. Rooney has not been able to pick up the ball and run at the Ukraine defence or play Welbeck in, which is his strength."
The obvious alternative is Theo Walcott who made such an impression against Sweden off the bench for Milner. I reckon we'll see him at some point.
MUR, I'm not sure if I would compare it to France-Ukraine, since France had control of the ball most of the game and kept it on the ground. Ukraine has had more chances, but they have really been speculative and toothless. England has attacked rarely, but you can see the Ukrainian foundations shaking each time England moves forward.
Can someone tackle that bloke!!!!!!!
Great tackle by Lescott, but why was the player unchallenged prior to that?
I agree with Lawro - it's as if Roon and Welbeck have just met.
Another corner as it failed to beat the first player.
Blow up, ref - I've had about enough of this shite!
STOP SMILING!
I think the way to crack the UK is with something quick. Ukraine is much too ponderous in its advances. In this sense, they might provide some good practice for England in preparation for a possible date with the Spaniards.
I think the quicker-strike Italians might be less amenable to England's liking.
Useless Ukrainian cross. Long may that continue.
Half time and half way there but still HOPELESS
Thankfully, the ref has blown for the end of a useless half. That was not good at all. 0-0.
Halftime and 0-0 from Donetsk as there was no stoppage time. The same halftime score in the other Ukrainian matches.
The only thing making me happy right now is the 0-0 scoreline between France and Sweden. Would love a Zlatan special right about now.
One minute of stoppage time from Kiev.
COME ON YOU BLOODY USELESS SWEDES!
Struth.. I thought that was pen but offside was called
Half time in the second match
Halftime and also 0-0 from Kiev.
Cor - I thought for the moment that the ref had blown up for a pen. Instead it was just offside on Zlatan. Half time in Kiev - 0-0.
I agree Red Devil. I think Woy will make that adjustment by bringing on Theo midway through the second half.
In any case, we will likely have some compelling matchups between groups C & D (unless Ukraine makes it through).
I think what we will see with Ukraine is similar to what we saw with Poland, needing to win that last game against a direct rival, fired on by its home fans, and crushed under the weight of expectations heaped upon a very average squad.
I hope you're right, Red Devil. Any reaction to the Italy progress yesterday?
First time I've seen that Pepsi ad with Messi, Aguero and Wilshere (?) running on top of the mosh pit - what have they been saving it for?
Bob Ley
Ben arfar
What a numpty!
The Italian pundits at halftime are starting to talk smack. "If we face England, they will be easy to dominate. There is noone in the midfield capable of stamping his authority on the game." Another pundit counters: "Yes, but they have great players." 1st pundit: "Gerrard has been anonymous and Rooney is not matching his club form so far today."
2nd pundit: "Well, I think they are dangerous." Blond bimbo moderator: "Italy may end up playing France though?" (the female moderators are great at killing the conversation with these out of the blue obvious statements)
I have to agree with the smack-talking Italian pundits.
Teams about to come back out for the second half - I hope that Woy rattled the teacups at half-time.
Here they come for the second half
No changes... BRING ON PACE
England to kick off - no changes to either side yet.
I think Woy will tell england top keep it tight at the back ,then will bring on Theo to win it for england. Odd Italian presenters, but strangely accurate.
BD,
Actually, a little bit later there was a bit of car horn honking going on. The major storyline was about how high the pressure was to have to play while constantly wondering what was going on with Croatia. The victory over Ireland was evaluated as quite positive. I'm not too sure about that. They scored both goals off of corners - not bloody likely to find another defense as accommodating.
The second half is underway from Donetsk.
One thing about this squad
England subs can come in an make a difference.
TW, AC, OX
The second half is underway from Kiev as Sweden brouhgt on Saudi based Wilhelmsson and he was immediately flagged offside.
Corner. This one has to go in!
Of course Milner can't get the cross over but wins a corner
Poor by the Ukrainina player ,trying to get Glen sent off and Glen rightly lets him have it.
There we go.
YES!!!!!!!!!
ROONEY!!
HE COULDN'T MISS THAT!!!
YESSSSSSS!!!!!!
Roon couldn't miss!
YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
1-0 ENGERLUND AS PIATOV FUMBLES A CROSS FROM MILNER AFTER A CORNER WAS HEADED AWAY AND ROON HEADS IN FROM A FOOT OUT.
Well done Gerrard with he cross again..... put him out on the right
Actually Stevie G crossed it. Two assists for him.
Corner to Ukraine... dangerous but out
