We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!
A Day of International Friendlies
We have international footie just three days before the start of the domestic season.England host Italy at 3 PM just seven and a half weeks after that heart breaking loss in the quarters of the Euros.Another tasty match will be Mexico vs the U.S. at 8 PM . Come join us for all the action.

Thanks for posting the thread, mate. I'll be on hand for the match.
This will be a very different affair from the quarter final last month. Due to the absurd scheduling, both sides will be running out B teams full of youngsters. The evergreen Frank Lampard will be skippering England today.
The line-ups out of Switzerland tonight:
England: Butland, Walker, Cahill, Jags, Baines, Carrick, Lamps, A. Johnson, Cleverley, Young, Carroll.
Subs: Ruddy, Lescott, Bertrand, Caulker, Milner, Livermore, Rodwell.
Italy: Sirigu, Ogbonna, Abate, Balzaretti, Astori, El Shaaq, Aquilani, De Rossi, Diamate, Nocerino, Destro.
Subs: Perin, De Sciglio, Peluso, Acerbi, Poli, Schelotto, Gastaidi.
And we're away, with Italy kicking us off.
Germany and the Argies are being shown on the Deuce. Great afternoon of the footer, then.
England earn an early corner, wearing an odd strip of white shirts and red shorts.
The big news out of Blighty today of course is that ManYoo have agreed terms with RVP and Arsenal. It looks as if the Dutchman will cost Fergie and co. around £24 million. Not a happy day then for Gooner and his lot.
Good afternoon, BD. Just got home and just in time for the action.
Not too much shape to this match yet.
Lots of width in the England side tonight with Baines and Walker anxious to get forward and Johnson and Young as out and out wingers.
Afternoon, MUR - hope your day is going smoothly.
Got Germany vs Argentina on and the link is loading
You haven't missed much yet.
The Argies were nearly in there through DiMaria.
Thanks BD. Hope yours is going well too.Just finished with eighth grade registration and Elizabeth off to the dentist at halftime.
Lovely long ball there from DiRossi through to the eager running Destro. Didn't control it though.
Interesting that Butland wins an England cap before he makes his first appearance in the Championship.
Headed miles over by Carroll from a cross by Lampard
Is 8th grade the last year of middle school for Melanie?
Carroll might have done better with that chance.
long range rocket from Adam Johnson is well blocked.
It is for Melanie.
Zabaletta has been booked for something. Deserved for the foul on Kehdeira.
Useless free kick there from Lamps. He's got to do better than just pass it to the Italian keeper.
Great pass from Diamanti, but useless from Aquilani
Wow - almost a high school student. That's fantastic!
Diamanti wins a free kick off of Young
Destro nearly gets on to that free kick. He looks a bit dangerous.
GOAL! Routine headed goal from a corner by DeRossi. Woy won't be happy with that.
1-0 Italy.
GOAL !!!
0-1 ITALY AS DE ROSSI HEADS IN A CORNER THAT INITIALLY WAS WON WHEN BUTLAND PUSHED OUT A FREE KICK FROM DIAMANTI
I agree, BD. A poor goal to concede. Can't blame Butland when far more experienced players defended poorly.
Thanks, BD. It is hard to believe Melanie will be in high school next year. It seems just like yesterday that she was starting kindergarten.
Destro heads straight to Butland off a cross from Nocerino after a great run by Diamanti. Where was the marking?
Useless, desperate cross from Kyle walker.
Messi has had a really rubbish penalty saved easily. I didn't catch the penalty incident, did you?
Messi had a horrible penalty saved by German reserve keeper Ter Steegen.
The England back four looks all at sea tonight.
Your thoughts on the £24 million move for RVP to United?
I love the RVP move, BD! I am delighted.
Kyle walker tackles Destro for a corner off a nice through ball.
Destro got behind Cahill again there but Walker did well to bail him out.
So how do you think United will line up with RVP?
Germany is down to ten men as Argentine forward Castro was brought down in the box by German keeper Ron Robert Ziegler, who was promptly sent off and Ter Steegen came on for Thomas Mueller and his first action was to save I penalty that you and I could have saved.
I have a feeling he may be up front alone with Roon just behind him or he could be up front with Chicharito with Roon behind the front two. I am not sure which option SAF will pick, but I am guessing on the first one.
I think Sparky could have saved that Messi effort.
I am not sure what to make of England's cherry colored shorts.Have they ever worn those before?
GOAL! England are level with another routine headed goal from a corner. Jags on the end of it.
1-1!
GOAL !!! 1-1 AS JAGS SCORES A NICE HEADER OFF A CORNER . HIS FIRST FOR ENGLAND.
I feel like we're watching Stoke v. Bolton.
I agree that Sparky could have saved that. It is rare to see a player sent off in a friendly, but the keeper denied a scoring opportunity when he brought down the player.
Germany are starting to turn the screw but they want to walk it in the net.
I agree, BD.Hard to believe these teams played in the quarters when I was up at Gooner Central.
Chicken Balzaretti is offside.
Surprised to see Germany dominating, a man down
A long range effort from Lampard is well saved by the back up keeper.
Yeah, I know. I don't know what the Argies are playing at. They have a man over.
Four minutes of stoppage time from Berlin.
Useless cross from Young after Carrick did well to dispossess De Rossi
GOAL! The Argies take the lead through a comical own goal by Sami Khedira from, yes, another corner.
Right on the stroke of half time.
The Argies take the lead off a corner . It deflected off Khedeira.
It would have been a brilliant back heel had it been at the correct end of the pitch
Halftime and 0-1 to the Argies.when it counted they lost this fixture 4-0.
It should be an historic debut for Butland, whose only league experience has been in the fourth tier. That must be a first for England,.
I remember that match well. Messi bottled it on that day, as well, and the Germans were quite thrilling.
I have to bugger off and take Elizabeth to the dentist . I should be back during the halftime break.
What can England make of this free kick now.
Just wide by Lampard.
I remember that last free kick goal for England - Beckham against Ecuador in the 2006 WC.
I've just looked at that Messi pen attempt again and again it's a stutter step. I almost think that puts off the kicker rather than the keeper. I prefer one smooth motion toward one corner or another that the kicker chooses ahead of time. Nothing fancy.
See you in a tick, MUR!
Hello BD. I am back. Did I miss much?
The Germans have the ball in the net early in the second half but it's waved off by the ref for offside.
Welcome back, MUR - not a lot.
The Germans had a goal disallowed for offside. The replay shows it was the correct decision as a long range effort came off the post and the offside player put in the rebound. The fans did not agree with yours truly.
GOAL !!! 0-2 ARGIES . A GREAT FINISH FROM MESSI AFTER BOATENG WAS WELL OUT OF POSITION.
GOAL! Messi makes up for his miss by adding a second goal with a tap in.
Peluso is coming on for Balzaretti. Ruddy is on for Jack Butland. Looks like UWS's favorite ballhog Jermain Defoe is also coming on.
Andy Carroll coming off after making very little impression in the first half. Shame about that.
Khedira blows one wide when he could have played in Ozil on the overlap. Jurgi Loew not looking best pleased.
Where did Jack Rodwell go? I like that lad a lot.
Ah, I've just looked it up. He's gone to Citeh. That's a shame - I'm not sure he's going to get into that side. What a waste!
Not sure about Rodwell, but two England keepers making their debut in the same match
Agreed BD. Is Rodwell going for the money?
Not Woy's favorite. Dafoe didn't make the Euro squad.
Argies nearly in for a third there.
Not sure what the point of using Defoe in a match like this is. I'd try another youngster out. The Ox, maybe?
I would have bet on Messi to score. It's a friendly. I could have made a few Bob off of that bet.
Useless pass from Dafoe, perfectly illustrating your point, BD.
I agree with Woy. It is a friendly, but it should be bloody obvious to the officials that the players should be protected. Woy shouldn't need to tell them.
Schurle coming on for Klose now for the Germans. I really like the cut of this guy's jib.
Is this match being played in Switzerland? I thought it was being played at Wemberley.
Agreed - there have been some nasty ones from DeRossi.
I agree with you about Schurrle.
It is in Bern, Switzerland. They weren't sure that Wembley would be available after the Olympics when they scheduled this one.
Nice save there by Ruddy!
Great header out from Jags off the free kick from Diamanti . Great save by Ruddy from Destro after a period of sustained Italian pressure.
Thanks for the update,BD.
Oh - Messi misses a golden opportunity for #3 there. Should rename him "Missi."
Nearly 0-3 to the Argies as Messi shot wide with just the keeper to beat
BOOM BOOM,BD.
Funny , but true.
The Germans have a big shout for a penalty. Nothing doing from the ref.
Believe it or not, the Argies may have to be one of my second choice teams as Laura has relatives that live there. Richard and his son went on vacation there at the end of July.
Big let off for England there with Peluso straight through. Missed badly.
El Shaararway sounds more Middle Eastern than Italian as he comes on for Italy..
I'd love to visit Argentina one of these days.
Agreed, BD. Jags did well, but England were poor defensively as I missed that penalty decision.
Poor corner by Lampard is cleared out by Aquilani for another corner.
Richard said it was an awesome vacation. He loved Buenos Aries and Iguazo Falls on the Argie Brazil border. Also like going to Uruguay
Milner and Lescott on for England.
0-3 Argies! DiMaria hits a cracker from left-footed from distance. And then promptly comes off.
GOAL !!! 0-3 ARGIES AS DI MARIA SCORES A SPECTACULAR LONG RANGE EFFORT.
A somewhat embarrassing scoreline now for the Germans, especially at home. I will have to rub it in when I see The Red Devil tomorrow night.
Milner has a cross intended for Dafoe cut out for a corner.
Good stuff from LUFC Academy. Nearly squared it to Cleverley. Corner chance.
Oh - what a shame. Cahill rocketed it in but Lescott was penalized.
Cahill spectacularly volleys a corner in the back of the net , but Jags is called for a hold.England were denied a legitimate goal.
It's an early start this weekend, with my beloved Leeds kicking off against Wolves at 7:15am EST. Ouch!
I would love to see you rub it in. Red Devil must be pulling his hair out over this performance.
I will get up early to support as your Whites take on Wolves.
Jake Livermore coming on for Lamps.
Jake Livermore comes on for Lampard as he makes his England debut,.
Huddersfield take on Cardiff on Friday as it they kick off the Football League season in an Evil start to the season.
I hear that Cardiff are bitching about having to field a teenage side in their losing effort to Northhampton in the League Cup yesterday. I've got my violin out for them.
A horrible performance by the Swiss officials. I hate to see what happens during those Swiss league matches.
GOAL GERMANY AS THEY HEAD IN A CONSOLATION GOAL. GREAT CROSS FROM SCHURRLE AND WELL HEADED IN.
GOAL! Germany pull one back through a lovely diving header by Howedes.
1-3 looks a bit more reasonable.
OH! A GREAT CROSS FROM MINER AND NEARLY AN O.G. FROM PELUSSO.
Another great cross by LUFC Academy!
Agreed about Cardiff. They chose to play a teenage side.Horrible to go out in August just six months after playing in the final at Wemberley and nearly winning the cup.
Lescott is called for pushing off the free kick off of Adam Johnson. It was more like De Rossi diving as Dafoe had it in the back of the net after the ref blew his whistle.
The Swiss refs have had an absolute mare.
Oh - handband boy Higauain nearly adds a fourth for the Argies.
Nearly 4-1 to the Argies off a sublime pass from Messi , but Castro hit the outside of the post.
Sorry. I meant Higuain.
Chelski's Ryan Bertrand coming on now.
Ryan Bertrand is on for Baines as he makes his England debut. I guess Woy will let just about anyone play for England.
Ruddy did well again!
Ruddy did well to tip over from Perrati.
GOAL! Ballhog Defoe scores!
GOAL !!! 2-1 ENGLAND AS DAFOE SCORES WITH A SUPERB FINISH AS ENGLAND BROKE AFTER RYAN BERTRAND HEADED OFF THE LINE FROM THE ITALIAN CORNER.
Marvelous strike there cutting in from the left flank and curling it around the Italian keeper.
2-1 England!
A fan invades the pitch at Berlin and is carried off by the authorities as he celebrates. Messi sees the funny side of it.
Into stoppage time in Berlin.
More ballhogging by Jermain but he's earned the right, eh?
Dafoe shoots wide from long range after a nice one two between Adam Johnson and Bertrand.
The match has ended in Berlin as the Argies win 1-3.
UWS might dispute that, BD.
I'm sure he would but he's strangely MIA today.
Northern Ireland and Finland drew 3-3 in Belfast while Belgium defeated Holland 4-2.
The Jocks lead the Aussies 3-1
Traps lads drew 0-0 in Serbia.
while Wales lost 0-2 at home to Bosnia.
Agreed , BD. He supposed to be an England fanatic.
Dafoe had a shot deflected for a corner after a superb long ball from Walker and Milner superbly went past Pelusso
Three minutes of stoppage time to come now.
Three minutes of stoppage time as the corner is wasted.
Miles offside by Gabbiadini off a long ball.
I wish England could have done this when it counted back in June.
That's it as it's a great win for England in Switzerland as they defeat Italy 2-1.
agreed, BD. That is definitely a shame.
The Jocks lead the Aussies 3-1 in stoppage time while it is France 0 Uruguay 0 in stoppage time.
Puerto Rico vs Spain kicked off seven minutes ago.
Portugal lead Panama 1-0 at the half while Japan were held 1-1 by Venezuela.
Brazil won 0-3 in Sweden while Ghana drew 1-1 in China.
South Korea defeated Zambia 2-1.
Denmark lost 1-3 to Slovakia in Copenhagen.
I wish you the best at the dinner party.
I have to go to the dentist to pick up Elizabeth. It was great chatting with you. I will catch you early Saturday morning.
