Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Midweek Footie Round-up

I'm here in the office following the day's footie action again. Condolences to Gooner regarding yesterday's loss to Bradford. But I'd be lying if I didn't own up to the dark wish for a cracking Yorkshire Derby in the semis now. Bring on Chelski! That's for next week - today we've got Swansea led by the white hot Spanish striker Michu against Middlesboro, along with some other bits and pieces in other tournaments. Join me if you're loafing this afternoon.

The other semi-finalist from last night's ties is Aston Villa, so Chelski really are the last big club in the competition. Could be Bradford, Villa, Boro and Leeds in the semis - wow!

0-0 so far 20 minutes in - the best chances falling to the Premiership side so far, of course.

Hey Bob
I am here.
I have the FA Cup match Mansfield vs Lincoln on the box and will put on your link for the League Cup match

What a final four it could be... don't blow it Chelsea and join them.. they'll have jet lag going to Elland Road!

I have joined the match at the 37 minute mark. Still scoreless. I think I would prefer Swansea more than Boro... they're not as big a club and probably never been in a Cup Final

Again, my commiserations to Stevie for yesterday's result. I was watching it on line... they did struggle all game!
Bradford have won NINE straight penalty shoot outs!! England should bring them in the squad for the World Cup or Euros!

A good 12 hours for Bradford City, they have been reinstated to the FA Cup after first being kicked out of the competition for fielding an illegal player.
They get to take on Brentford in a replay and would play Southend in the 3rd Round

Just saw that they are also in the Johnstone's Plaint Trophy semi too!!

WHAT A CUP TEAM!

Half time at Swansea and, in the words of Tony Cottee, "it's been poor." 0-0 so far with the Premiership side the better but definitely resting their players for the punishing Premiership campaign.

Just saw the goal that Mansfield scored... a looping header from the back post hits the front post and rebounds off the keeper's shin !

Lincoln's goal was a great finish but a striker who dips it over the head of the onrushing keeper

A lot of gushing over Leo Messi in the studio at half-time, but bloody hell the defending in that match tonight was woeful. They really put the red carpet out for him.

Just cut and paste the link into the comment box. You don't have to embed it if you don't want to. But if it's a YouTube video, you can click on the "share" button and cut and paste the embed code to make it easier.

The reason I'm stressing posting things is that I'm actively working on two people right now - JDLC and Mark Enderle - so I want the blog to seem as active as possible, not just a vanity project for me.

I'm just reading your article on the Arse. Gooner is coming around to the arguments that I've made for the past couple of years about moving Wenger up into a director of football position and bringing in someone like Pep Guardiola to run the side. But I still think he'd be offended by the tone of that Mail article, especially the comparisons with United's success. We visited the Emirates in the spring and I found it quite dead in terms of atmosphere but Gooner thought it was a "temple."

Here's something else for your consideration. I've just thrown in a proposal for a conference that's going to be held at SUNY Institute of Technology out in Utica/Rome - not too far from you - from May 21-24 next year. Could be a nice chance to catch up and watch some footer if you and Kathy are up for it.

Still waiting for the penalties story

4:50 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Okay, recently I had the chance to play for a faculty team in an indoor tournament. I think I mentioned it and you had suggested we call ourselves "Bayer Neverlosin."

Anyway, we knew that we were somewhat up against it as only three of us had ever played seriously and all of us are out of shape playing against kids of Tom's age.

So, our strategy was to have one of our good players up front to try and nick a goal (he ended up only scoring one goal in three matches!), another as a box to box busy midfielder and me in the back as goalkeeper/sweeper. Anyway, we were pants in the first match but ended up grabbing a 0-0 draw. They then went into penalties after every drawn match. So, I went in goal. The goals were rather small, so I thought I'd just stand there and make myself big and see if the plonkers would hit me. First up...right at me, I punched it away. Then our skipper asked me to take the first pen. So, I did what I always do. Put the ball down, walked back five paces with back to the goal, turned around and hammered it low in the left corner. 1-0! Saved the next one the same way. Our skipper side footed it in the right corner. Saved their third one. Our striker side footed it in the right corner again and we had won the only match we'd end up winning. Lost the second match 0-1 and the third one 1-2.

4:51 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

All of those matches would be great!

4:52 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Well done mate! Wish it was on video!!

They should have Bob 'Becchio' Dahlgren up front!

4:57 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Well, when we were chasing the goal in the last match, I told Alex (our skipper) to stick me up front for the last last few minutes. I was sure I could nick an equalizer. But he never did. Typically bloody typecasting!
