Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

RIP Dave Brubeck (1920-2012)

I'd be remiss is I didn't acknowledge the death yesterday of one of the jazz great, pianist Dave Brubeck, who I had the great fortune to see on the occasion of his 85th birthday down in Florida. Brubeck took the inspiration from Miles Davis' "Birth of the Cool" sessions and created a West Coast sound that combined classical and jazz musics into a breezy third stream, with help from alto saxophonist Paul Desmond. His "Time Out" LP is one of my Top Ten favorite albums. Enjoy this taste of his biggest hit, "Take Five."

Yes, indeed. We're getting down to the last few great lions of that last great jazz generation. Sonny Rollins is hanging in there at age 82. Ornette Coleman is a few months older and Charlie Haden who was a kid when he joined Ornette's band in 1957, is 75.

But at least we had Dave for as long as we did. Tragically Paul Desmond, whose alto was so key to that Brubeck sound of the 50s and 60s, would only be 88 now, if he hadn't died back in 1977 at age 53. Even worse, John Coltrane would be 86 this year, had he not died way back in 1967 at the astonishingly young age of 41.
