Snowed In Footer
We had our first serious snow storm in about a year and a half here in WNY last night, so there's nothing else for it - time to relax, sit back and enjoy a full weekend of the good stuff. First up, Wigan v. Arsenal. Then there are the usual 3pm GMT kickoffs including Citeh v. Reading. Finally, we wrap up our soccer Saturday with the late one - Liverpool v. Fulham. So - why not kick back, relax and enjoy the camaraderie here on the LOB.

The big footer news yesterday is the new ownership deal at Elland Road. The club is now debt free for the first time in years and - more importantly - Ken Bates-free. Bye bye Cap'n Birdseye!
Good morning, BD. Great picture. Chatting on LOB and some hot cocoa is a perfect way to start the day after a snow storm.
WAY HAY! Good riddance to Captain Birdseye and the debt. Is that walking the plank or being exiled to a remote island? Who is the new ownership and what is your opinion of them?
Morning, MUR - it's a shadowy Dubai-based consortium called GFH Capital that's taken over Leeds. The new face of the club is a fellow named Sam Patel who did the press conference yesterday, insisting that the new owners would not be spending "crazy money" in January. The jury's out for me...
Rangers have taken the lead at second place at Elgin City. If they win they will be top by six points.
The team news is in from the DW Stadium:
Wigan: Al Habsi, Kone, McCarthy, Jones, Di Santo, Maloney, McArthur, Boyce, Beausejour, Stam, Figueroa. Subs: Pollitt, Caldwell, Gomez, McManaman, Boselli, Fyvie, Golobart
Arsenal: Szczesny, Sagna, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Gibbs, Arteta, Wilshere, Cazorla, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walcott, Podolski. Subs: Mannone, Jenkinson, Koscielny, Coquelin, Ramsey, Arshavin, Gervinho.
It sounds that way.I sure hope it works out because leeds have had their fair share of crazy , evil owners.
I think I will throw in a tenner and take you up on your CL offer!
You got it, mate!
They're off from the DW!
Wigan get us underway in this early one. Arsenal start in 5th, Wigan in 18th - could be a mismatch.
David Villa on loan to the Gunners? INTERESTING! What say you Gooner?
Nice opening feeling to this match, with Arsenal loads of space within the Wigan three-man defense.
I think it will be an interesting contest. Both have similar playing styles and similr stengths and weaknesses.Sagna wins an early corner.
A corner from Theo was heqaded back to Theo before Carzola conceded a free kick
Roger Espinoza of Sporting KC will join Wigan in January. I am not so sure about that one.
Three Spanish players have scored hat-tricks in the Prem - Cazorla, Jordi Gomez, and.....?
I wonder who the third one is - Jose Antonio Reyes maybe? David Silva?
Elgon City have tied it up vs Rangers
I don't know Espinoza, do you? I was errant in watching the MLS this past season.
Nayim of Spurs in the 90s?
I hav heard of him, but is he good enough to play in the EPL? I am skeptical.
Could be - don't mention Nayim in Gooner's presence. Still smarting from the goal he scored from the half-way line for Valencia against the Arse in the Cup Winners Cup before joining Spurs.
I would not be surprised if this finishes 3-3.
Wigan don't seem to have anything going up front.
Got it, BD. Could Villa be the fourth?
They are giving it a go as Kone was flagged offside. I think Kone could be a threat, given the right service.
Ricky Villa? I don't think he ever played in the Prem - too early.
Oh - The Ox had a chance from a narrow angle. Probably should have gone across the keeper. Al Habsi did well.
Great save by Al Habsi from Ox As he was put through by Arteta on the break
The Gunners moving the ball around nicely but not too many clear cup chances to show for it so far.
Rangers now lead 1-2 at Elgin City
Don't mention that one to Gooner. LOL! I meant David not Richard
Kone goes alone there looking for glory but should have played his strike partner Stam in.
Great break by Kopne, but he was greedy and didn't pass o Ronnie Stam and his effort was easily saved, then Al Habsi makes a great save.Exciting start to the match
Has David Villa ever played in England?
A rocket of a volley from Poldi was well blocked.
He never has. He has spent his entire career in Spain
A nice break from Wigan , but an errant pass fom Mal;oney was easily gathered by Seudio and Stam was again in a great position.
I'm guessing David Silva; I'll bet he scored three in one of those matches where Citeh scored 6 or 7.
Steve Bould can relax and have a nap this afternoon. I don't really see Wigan testing Arsenal's backline today.
Tghat's three poor consecutive Wigan crosses. they could have ben in the lead if there had been better deliveries.
Arsenal either after Poldi was doing his best impression of a rugby kicker with that effort.
Kone seems to have been to the hairdressers with Djibril Cisse.
Wilshere goes down looking for a free kick but nothing's forthcoming from the ref.
I noticed that a lot of lower division matches in England and Scotland are postponed, presumably due to waterlogged pitches. It has rained all week in England?
Kone has hd that haircut for years, so I guess they have been pleased with their hair stylist!
Shaun Maloney comes back on with a glob of Crisco on his noggin after that clash of heads with Sagna.
Apparently so. It's definitely that time of year.
Better defending from Wigan than in their most recent matches.
UWS must have had a peek out the window this morning and decided to pull a Rip van Winkle.
I usually expect matches to be postponed due to snow or frozen pitches, but it can be for this as well.
Ian thinks that the "innovative Wigan system" is doing well. I reckon it's more that Arsenal just aren't very good.
He must have been out partying yop celebrate a two week vacation and must need a late lie in. Was he snowed in too?
I'm amazed at what they do for Premiership pitches at this point. 20 years ago, this Wigan pitch would have been a total bog - but it looks like a billiard green.
Probably some of both. I do ommend Wigan for putting in a decent effort off a poor run of form. They did win at the EM in April
I'd imagine so - the snow belt was rolling in from Chicago and moving east. He's five years east of us. It started snowing here around 6pm so I'd expect that it hit him around midnight.
OH! Kone drags it horribly wide with just the keeper to beat off a superb through ball from Di Santo
Kone misses a big chance there one on one with Sussudio. Completely shanked his shot wide.
We didn't get any snow! I don't expect any when you and Gooner come to town.
I had to chuckle at Gooner's suggestion of fourth place in the Prem being renamed The Wenger Cup. Nice one!
Looking forward to it! Only a couple of weeks now.
Beausejour fouled Ox.Arteta to take .A decent delivery , but well headed out by Emerson Boyce.
Ta, BD. Me too. It should be a cracker. Love Gooner's suggestio too. Gooners tombstone should read "I never stopped fighting for fourth." or a Pence saved is a Pence not pinched."
I just saw somwe more postponed matches. Blackburn vs Brighton has been postponed while Crewe vs Bournemouth and Donny vs the Fake Dons has been added to the list. Only two League Two matches and only one from the Conference survived the incessant rain.
Arsenal not really giving the Gooner much to cheer about on St. Stephen's Day so far.
United will be on ESPN2 on Boxing Day and next Saturday aginst black and white striped teams both days and both times at OT.
An aptly named day as it seems gloomy and dreary so far or our Steven
More great defending and a another great block from Boyce.
Rangers lead 2-3 at Elgin City at the half.
Looking forward to watching the Boxing Day fixtures with the family.
Ronnie Stam has really put in some poor crosses. No wonder why they didn't pass to him earlier on.Not any better by Beausejour.
Same here. I know Arsenalvs West Ham was supoosed to be shown on FSC, soo I wonder if they will air an alternate match
Beausejour shouldn't have been caught offside there - he was looking across the line when the ball was played.
Arsenal will need to grind out a result if they expect to win. I was expecting a close contest
If they were smart, they'd pick up the rights for that early morning classic - Forest v. Leeds. But I doubt FSC are that canny .
Oh - this could be trouble for Arsenal. No - it's a yellow card out for the Verminator.
Wilshere also chatted himself into the book as well.
A booking for Young Jack. Wigan players wanted red, but the ref got it right. Poor by the Wigan players trying to get him sent off.
Di Santo balsted over from long range and MacArhtur cathces young Jack with an aerial challenge.
Wilshere goes into a bit hard again. He needs to calm down or go off early.
Good point, bD. but does FSc have rights to the Championship? Also what will they show at 10 PM?
Hey Boys,
Sorry I have been a miss this morning. Watching the match upstairs. I will also be leaving to do some last minute Christmas shopping for pressies and food
I'll be around for a tad
Great sliding tackle by Figueroa on OX and it wins Wigan a goal kick
Good morning UWS. Great to have you on board.
Norwich v. Chelski would be my pick. I notice there's a late one - Villa v. Spurs and an extra late one - Stoke v. Liverpool - on Boxing Day.
Two minutes of stoppage time as that was another poor cross by Beausejour.
Morning UWS - a little extra kip this morning?
Theo is playing today? Honestly, I haven't noticed him at all.
Correct, BD.I think plus might have Norwich vs Chelsea . I will check at the half./
Add Notts County vs Orient to the postponed matches. Only four League One matches are on
Half-time: Wenger looked arsed off. 0-0. I'm off for a kip on the magic couch.
Just reading some of your comments
No snow here in eastern NY at all
Maybe some expected on Christmas Eve
Half time
Halftime and 0-0 from the DW. Wigan should actually be ahead , but for that horrible miss from Kone and some poor crossing.
Got my SS link going... i just love it
Elgin and Rangers is 2-3
Check out the email I sent you of the the Beeb's predictions video... pretty funny
Just saw that FSC has replaced the postponed Arsenal vs Ham match with Sunderland v Citeh
Rangers will lead the division by six points if they win at second palced Elgin City.
Second half underway
The second half is underway from the DW as I am watchng the humorous video
Some of those impersonations were really good
Rangers now lead 2-4 at second place Elgin City and will go top by six points.
They were excellent . Thanks for the vid, UWS
Couple of chances for Wigan and then Arsenal break, Theo with a shot well saved by El Hasbi
Still should have scored
Superb by Al Habsi from Theo after a great cr45oss from Ox to keep it 0-0
Rangers now lead 5-2 at Elgin City
Ox wns a free kick afer MacArtur cheaply conceded possession.
I agree that rsenal should have scored earlier.
Back from dreaming about an 8-0 win for the Leeds boys today.
Poldi's setting up a leftfooted free kick.
Poldi into the wall that wasn't the full ten yards back
Wall never 10 yards away... terrible refereeing
Leeds have a tough one vs Middlesbrough at ER today. it should be a competitive match vs another northern rival
I agree 100%, uWS
Rangers have scored number 5
Ox wins a corner off of Figueroa
Poor corner and Wigan easily cleared
Watching the impersonations now - definitely more entertaining than this match. Especially like the Mancini and Rafa ones.
Gee. Thanks for the update Ian. I emailed the newas of the Arsenal match as far back as Thursday. Too little too late, Ian!
Penalty to the Arse
Arsenal are gifted a penalty!
Not sure... I guess in today's game but it was really nothing
Mikel Arteta to step up for this one....
Arteta... one nil
PENALTY ARSENAL! Adefinite foul by beausejour on theo as he chased dow a poor cross by gibbs.
Slotted home easily by Arteta - right side. Decent penalty.
I loved Woy's pronunciation of the West Brom striker
GOAL !!! 0-1 GOONERS ! COMETH THE MAN COMETH THE HOUR AS ARTETA SENDS AL HABSI THE WRONG WAY WITH A GREAT PENALTY!
So - Arsenal are now winning the Wenger Cup. At least temporarily.
Wasted chance for Wigan
I've only got one question about that Football Focus clip, UWS:
WHY ISN'T IT ON THE LOB!
same bloke that gave away the pen
High and wide from beausejour after being superbly through bhy MacArthur
I've tried to post videos before
How do you do it when it isn't from youtube
Arsenal are now THIRD!!!
It was a stupid penalty conceded from a stupid challenge and Beausejour has undone an hour of good work with one stupid challenge.
I've told you before - just post the same thing that you did in your email. The only difference is that the link itself won't be live and people will have to cut and paste the link into their browser. Big deal - the main thing is that it's public and everyone can see it on the blog.
Great arsenal updates, UWS and BD. Wenger will be delighted as this match has been a really tough slog.
Wigan fans are arsed off because Di Santo has been ordered off to remove his ear=rings.
I just saw that Norwich vs Chelsea will be on FSC+ while FSC Arsenal vs West Ham wih Sunderland vs Citeh. Your thoughts?
Why did it take so long to nring him back on? I don;t think there has to be a break in play and Arsenal could have gone two up vs ten men
Maloney has a cross deflected by Merty for a corner.Poor Wigan corner
Well offside by Theo as rangers now lad 6-2 at Elgin City.
Deflected shot... easily saved
Sunderland v. Chelski isn't the worst match.
Kone with a decent shot
A corner from beausejour is headed away and Seydio did well to save a deflected effort from Figueroa, then another great save from Kone
Poor stuff again from Kone - blasted straight into Sussudio.
How Reading looked on Monday,
Citeh will get a cricket score today and help their GD
Agreed, BD.It's Manchester vs the Geordies on Boxing Day.
Ox had a shot deflected for a corner, then a corner rom Theo was headed away , then Al Habsi punched away a long cross.
JUst wide by Jones.. that was close
OH! Nearly 1-1 as a superb ffort from David Jones hit the stanchion behind the goal as Seudio was rooted to the spot.
Arsenal seem to be doing their level best to allow Wigan back into this one. Wenger is preparing Ramsey to come on, perhaps for The Ox.
Young Jack is foukled just outside the box by Figueroa. Not sure why the Honduran is complaining
Theo about a foot over from the free kick
Bale is starting for Spurs
Rangers hit second place Elgin for SiX
I agree , BD. I would have wiated another ten minutes to bring Ramsey on for Ox, who had an excellent second half.Callum McManaman is on for Di Santop. That is a curious decision too as Wigan need a goal
The SPL is rubbish.
That was a great win for Rangers in a crucial six pointer vs second place elgin City as they are now six points ahead of welgin City and looking a good bet for promotion.
Coq au Vin coming on for Podolski. He never seems to last more than 75 minutes.
Coq Au Vin is on for Poldi as Wenger is shutting up shop.
Scottish footie, I mean.
I was going to say... when did Rangers go up so quickly
Another poor cross by Stam and Merty clears for a corner
Another cross blocked... I would have saved the rebound... Arsenal were in trouble... now they clear the corner
A corner from, David Jones was headed away and Figueroa shot iover from long range trying to impress the rugger scouts.
I beat you to that, UWS. Boom boom.
Where's bloody number 10 curling a shot into the top corner.. like he did last year on April 11
I know it was April 11.... we went EIGHT points up on April 8 and it would have been 11 on that night
BUGGER!!!!!
Good point abouty Scottish footie. Does that change if Celtic make the EPL quarters, but United Arsenal don't?
I think they have a better shot to go through than the two south of the border
You must be talking about Shaun Maloney Baloney!
I don't think so. It would be a fluke if Celtic were to go through. But England is definitely at risk for losing that fourth slot at this point. This would be two years on the trot with very little representation in the later stages, despite Chelski's win last season.
United vS Real should be fairly even because Real have just as many defensive weaknesses as United. Real have conceded a lot of goals from set pieces this season.
Bad news for the Wenger Cup then!
I hope you're right MUR
United have a chance because the second leg is at OT.
I think England had the third best record last season in the CL , so they didn;t lose it last season. They might in a few years if they don't do well this season.
Only Barca have a longer undefeated run in the top five European leagues than NORWICH!!
I know what you mean about the lack of representation in the latter stages but what other country other than Spain has had numerous representatives
Jordi Gomes is on for Maloney Balonety. He had a hat-traick vs Reding so he must be the other Spanish player with a hat-trick in the EPl
Oh - mad scramble late on in the Arsenal box. More heartbreak for Wigan.
I agree with Macca - why wasn't Gomez on from the off?
Four minutes of stoppage time as as two shots from Gomex were blocked and one could have been a penalty for handball.Kos on for Carzoa.
Yeah - it's Cazorla, Jordi Gomez and someone else, I'm guessing David Silva. Any guesses on that third Spaniard to score a hat-trick in the EPL, UWS?
I disagree with you about the second leg being at OT is a plus. United NEVER do well with the second leg at home. I can think of only one match where it made a difference... Roma 7-1
IN the 99 season, we beat Inter at home and drew away
We had a last minute equalizer at home and won away
We hardly ever win the second leg at home to go through. We more often do something away from home to save ourselves
Last time we played Real.. drew 0-0 at the Bern and lost 3-2 at home
Volleyed wide by MacArthur and that should be it for Wigan
This result, if it holds up, will allow Reading and QPR the opportunity to gain some ground on their relegation neighbors. QPR are away to Newcastle and Reading are away to Citeh.
That's it
Arsenal are up to third!!!
Off to the loo
That's that - Arsenal up into third in their push for the Wenger Cup. Wigan still down in the dumps.
Off for more dreaming on the magic couch.
its 1-0 to the Arsenal as they grind it out at the DW. I agree with BD that Jordi Gomez should have started.
Sparky is dreamin' on our magic couch.
Citeh vs reading next on FSC. Citeh could win by a cricket score.
Off for walkies in blustery Glenville
Cheers, UWS! Stay warm!
They're off from the etihad as a mooment's applause was impeccably observed for the victims in New Town, Ct. Classy by players and fans.
A bit of the MOT at kick-off now. We need to bounce back from that mauling at the hands of Chelski in mid-week. No condolences from Chelskilad. Shame.
Adrian Mariappa is booked for a rash challenge on Twev. Stoke nearly took the lead at WHL aginst Spurs, the only team in england who have not conced in the first fifteen minutes this season.
Posh are off to a quick start after that win at Cardiff last weekend. They're 1-0 over Bolton.
Young Fergie have taken the lead vs Bolton.
