Another Summer Day of Crucial Internationals
In another indication that the footer season never really ends, we've got a Tuesday with a bumper crop of Brasil 2014 qualifiers in Europe, South America and North/Central America. Join me throughout the day for updates and live coverage, culminating in the crucial U.S. v. Panama match from Seattle.
257 Comments:
It's a double header on ESPN starting with Mexico vs Costa Rica at 8 PM followed by the U.S. vs Panama at 10 PM
Count me in.
Thanks, MUR - I'm looking forward to it as well. I may have a couple of lads coming over for the US game.
A quick check in with some scores and updates:
England's sorry U-21 campaign has come to an end with a 1-0 loss to Israel.
In Group C WC Qualifying, Sweden have predictably beaten the Faroes 2-0. They're battling it out with Austria who also have 11 points from six matches but with a much better GD. Germany are running away with this group, having only dropped two points in six matches.
In Group B, Armenia have just about ended Denmark's interest in Brasil 2014, with an 0-2 win in Copenhagen. Italy are topping this group, with Bulgaria and the Czechs battling it out for second.
In Group I, Spain and France will be battling it out for top spot vs. second/playoff spot. Finland's 1-1 draw with Belarus doesn't help them but then they were never getting near qualifying out of this group.
In CONMEBOL qualifying, Colombia take on Peru at 4:30 EST and Ecuador meet Argentina at 5pm.
Colombia have pulled off a solid 2-0 win over Peru and look set for qualification at this point.
Darkhorse side Ecuador are currently holding table toppers Argentina to a 1-1 draw at home.
Late kick-off at the Azteca due to Ecuador leaving their hotel late! What a nonsense!
Double T is complaining about the dodgy pitch in Seattle.
Here's the CONCACAF Hexagonal going into tonight's matches:
1. Costa Rica - Played 4, Pts. 7, GD - 2
2. USA - Played 4, Pts 7, GD - 1
3. Mexico - Played 5, Pts 7, GD - 1
4. Panama - Played 4, Pts 6, GD - 2
5. Honduras - Played 4, Pts 4, GD - -2
6. Jamaica - Played 5, Pts 2, GD - -4
I reckon a Mexico win is probably the best result in the early one.
Extremely militaristic pre-match ceremony going on at the Azteca right now. WTF?
After all of that bollocks, the teams are finally making their way out onto the pitch.
Here's the team news:
Mexico lineup (4-4-2): Jose Corona; Carlos Salcido, Hector Moreno, 'Maza' Francisco Rodriguez, Gerardo Flores; Andres Guardado, Hector Herrera, Jesus Zavala, Pablo Barrera; Aldo de Nigris, 'Chicharito' Javier Hernandez
Costa Rica lineup (4-3-3): Keylor Navas; Jhonny Acosta, Giancarlo Gonzalez, Michael Umaña, Cristian Gamboa; Michael Barrantes, Junior Diaz, Yeltsin Tejada, Joel Campbell, Bryan Ruiz, Cristian Bolaños
Great atmosphere in the Azteca tonight. CR are definitely parking the bus.
Oh my! Joel Campbell hits the post with a blistering shot on the break! That was nearly an early lead for the Ticos!
Oh - Navas did so well to palm Zavala's cross away from Chicha's path. Great start to this match.
Lots of empty seats behind the right hand goal - I wonder why?
Moreno gets away with one as the dangerous Campbell streaks through.
No real chances in this first fifteen minutes for El Tri. They desperately need a win tonight.
Nice to see gooner Campbell getting a start a d looking sharp. Why wouldn't a draw be the better result here
Interesting - Joel Campbell is an Arsenal player who's on loan in Spain. He looks useful - but could be another Gervinho, I suppose.
Evening, mate. I was just thinking that, too, about Campbell. What do you know about him?
I reckon the Ticos could stand being knocked off their perch. If El Tri win tonight, they've still played one more than us and would be level on points with us (a win against Panama given).
Mexico look really out of sorts, very nervous in this opening period.
Good evening BD and Gooner. I was busy solving a remote problem with Disgh Network. Solved and good to go
I'm a bit amused to we the yanks represented early inthe form of these mook refs from the MLS. Even baldemero Toledo is the 4th official.
Great to have you on board, MUR - glad to hear that you sorted out that Dish issue.
Mexico have been out of sorts throughout the group matches . Most have been 1-0 or 0-0 scores.
Cheers BD.Nice run by Barrera as he wins a corner for Mexico
Chicha not happy that Barrera failed to get that cross over to him.
Hiya MuR. Chicha throwing the toys out of the pram early doors
Taken short and crossed straight to the keeper.
Apparently Mexico haven't won at home in 2013!
Chicha is used to that flawless service from My Boy Nani at OT.
Hello Gooner. Chicha upset that Barrera was such a numpty after a great run for a an easy sitter.
Nani flawless????
UWS is making a bid for Dad of Year ahead of Father's Day by helping young Jonathan with his algebra homework. He'll be joining us shortly.
Guardado is tugged back there by Gamboa - yellow card issued.
Guardaoa fouled just outside and Gamboa booked for Costa Rica.
The free kick is wide by Ex Cottager, Carlos Salcido
Salcido fires....well wide. How bloody old is Salcido - it seems as if he's been about since the early 90s.
Correct. Mexico have not won at h0ome due to a series of 0-0 draws
Guadardo goes down way easy to earn a dangerous free
How does Denmark lose 0-4 at home to Armenia?
Campbell games a dangerous free kick here. They need to make this count.
Ruiz to take - no, it's Barantes. Into the wall. Useless.
Free kick top the Ticos.Poor free kick by Balantes into the wall./
Draw the optimal result? Discuss you math wizards
Denmark aren't very good? I reckon that Mr. Paddy Power Pants is probably still their best player.
I still like a Mexico win in this one, which would leave us top, Mexico second, Panama three points behind and Panama well out of it.
Cross by Chicha intended for De Negris, but cleared away
Let me check the CONCACAF tables.
Here they are again:
1. Costa Rica - Played 4, Pts. 7, GD - 2
2. USA - Played 4, Pts 7, GD - 1
3. Mexico - Played 5, Pts 7, GD - 1
4. Panama - Played 4, Pts 6, GD - 2
5. Honduras - Played 4, Pts 4, GD - -2
6. Jamaica - Played 5, Pts 2, GD - -4
He might still be working off a national team ban for idiot behavior. I think I read they'd given him 4-5 games out
I'm liking these two commentators. They're a bit chatty but entertaining nonetheless.
A draw is the best result for the U.S. ,assuming the U.S. defeat Panama. The U.S , Mexico, and Costa Rica all level with seven points while Panama are one behind on six. A U.S. win and a draw in this match puts the U.S. in the driver's seat
For dropping trou again? I'd give him 8 games out for that.
Chicha has talked himself into the ref's book now. Pushed over the defender and then some backchat.
Chicha talks himself into the book.
I will defer to your superior math ability, MUR.
The Ticos already corner flagging it. It's obvious they came for a draw.
Sweden's 2-0 win over the Faroes, not Pharohs , means that they Austria , and Ireland are all on eleven points in the fight for second place, a playoff spot.
Well done Ticos.
I think it was for violating team rules over a curfew. He's also been cut down by a season ending injury at Juve. He didn't feature much there which is why it's proving bloody difficult to shift him this summer.
I wouldn't mind seeing Austria in the WC Cup. I've got a good friend here who's Austrian and I can imagine a crazy Schnitzel Night next summer if they sneak into the tournament.
He's still on your books?!
Nearly the lead for the Ticos but a great save for Jesus Corona.
Oh - Campbell rifles one that Corona does well to get to.
I'm shite at math and the LOB's Sun King conclusion was what I thought was the best outcome
Are you guys talking about Chjristian Poulsen?
Bendtner
Cheers Gooner.Love the nickname too. An added bonus.
Oh Yes. He hasn't been a Goone rfor a while .Wasn't he at the SOL?
The Ticos definitely looking the more likely here. Natives getting restless in the Azteca.
Yeah for now.
My pleasure your majesty
Wouldn't you prefer Ireland rather than Austria at the WC. Either team would have to win a potentially tricky playoff match to even qualify as Germany has all but won the group.
Cheers Gooner. Hopefully it won't be off with my head.I fell a sharp pain in the back of my neck
Nah - no Irish friends here and I fancy the idea of a schnitzel and strudel night over a bit pot of bubble and squeak. No contest!
Just wide by Bryan Ruiz after a poor Mexican clearance.
Understood. Austria will need to navigate that two legged playoff in November.
Barrera has looked hopeless in this first half. Where's Gio Dos Santos?
Barrera took forever to get in the cross after a superb pass from De Negris, then De Negris crossed straight to the keeper.
I second that. At the moment the Irish remind me of a really ugly combination of Sunder-Stoke
Agreed. I realize Barrera was a flop with the Hammers, but surely he learned tha art of crossing from his time in the Prem if nothing else.
They definitely played that way against England.
A shite cross from another ex Prem player in Carlos Salcido. Didn't these players learn to cross down London Way?
Andreas Weimann and David Alaba will be the key Austrian players
GUI is out burning down his neighbourhood after the spuds came 5th again
Apparently not. I'd forgotten Barrera's time in East London.
Half-time and the Azteca crowd is not happy at all.
Guardado wanted a pen as the first half ends 0-0. So far so good.
Mexico is ready to kick off the second half and Costa Rica have not even come on to the pitch
Now the Ticos are gaming it a bit by making El Tri wait while they stall in the dressing room.
The Ticos finally come out of the dressing room amidst a chorus of boos.
Honduras lead wooden spoon team, Jamaica, 1-0
De Negris did so well to nod that long cross back but Chicha was too far ahead of the play.
De Negris heads down a cross form Chicha and the keeper collects
It finished Desmond between Italy and Haiti in a friendly. Should we read too much into that?
Not a lot, mate. Not a lot.
Is Elizabeth cheering for El Tri?
Pablo Barrera wins a corner.
Elizabeth seems none too interested, but her mom is.
A promising attack ends with De Negris drifting offside.
De Negris is flagged offside.
You've got the mother-in-law over tonight? Well in, mate!
Mexico is about to make a substitution as Campbell, the Gunner who has never played for their first team, shoots wide.
Oh - Campbell got into a great position but then scuffed his shot badly. A bit of a push but he should have done better.
Oh - Navas did well to save that acute shot from Salcido.
Great Mexican build up and a great save.
Bryan Ruiz heads away the corner.
My Mum-in-law is at her house, but I called her to tell her about the match. She switched form the Spurs vs the Miami Heat.
Spain take the lead vs Irteland in a friendly midway through the second half.
Another Mexican corner and headed away yet again.
Well done, mother-in-law!
Do you speak Spanish or English with your mum-in-law, David?
The natives are definitely restlees.
I spoke English. She has lived in the U.S. since the late 50s.
I reckon the MLS refs are being called some choice names tonight.
Ah - that makes sense.
Quite rightly so.
I'll bet you'd love the book that my brother gave me for my birthday - all about life and football in Cuidad Juarez.
Any response to are FB comments?I became occupied as it was our work day for summer school and never had a chance to check.
Late call by the commentators on that Honduras goal. You called that ages ago.
Definitely sounds like a must read. Ciudad Juarez is across the river from El Paso.
Yes - Mike is none to happy with either of us. I suggested that he get outside his gated community in Houston and go out and meet some of his neighbors of different faiths and persuasions. I think he's a bit isolated.
Extremely late.Sounds raaaaaaather ESPN!
Raaaather.....
How far is it from you?
He can unfriend us if doesn't like the cut of our gib.All bark and no bite.
El Paso is about 850 miles from Harlingen!
US v. Panama being shifted onto ESPN2 temporarily. Bloody Ticos and their delaying tactics!
Bloody hell - Texas is huge!
Texas is huge . Miles and miles of it! I still have the match on ESPN.
Barrera is finally getting the hook - he's been horrible. Aquino on for him.
The natives are restless as Aquino is on for Pablo Barrera. About bleedin time.
I reckon this match should be just about done and dusted by the time the US starts up.
El tri win their seventh corner
Agreed - corner to Mexico. Nothing doing from it. Headed over the bar.
Rodriguez heads well over from tyhe corner by Guardado
Cunningham on for Bolanos.
I'm back. Got a bell from dad who sounds pretty chipper even though he had a chopper pulled today. And the mystery of the missing walker was solved. From what I can see The Ticos are rope a doping El Tri. Btw Campbell can't get a work permit so we have parked him in Spain until he gets a full national team pedigree instated.
Spain lead Ireland 1-0 in a match being played at Yankee Stadium.
Yeah - the Ticos have been parking the bus from early on and trying to hit on the break. They've definitely got the speed merchants for that tactic.
Weird - why would Spain and Ireland play at Yankee Stadium?
Hello Gooner. Glad to hear your dad is doing well. Sorry about the dental work. I think you are better off without Campbell based on his performance vs Mexico.
Not sure.I guess plenty of interst in the Big Apple.
Hector Herrera is the second player booked for Mexico
Chance for the Ticos to swing a free kick in. This would not be good if they nicked a cheap one.
Oh - Corona nearly gifted the Ticos a winning goal. Cor!
Corona gets away with one as he misses the cross and the Ticos have a corner.
Yow! What a Morris Dancer the Mex keeper is.
Costa Rica win a free kick just outside the box.
Oh - that free kick is deflected and could have gone anywhere!
Poor free kick from Joe Campbell is deflected for a corner.
About time - Gio coming off the bench with 18 minutes left on the clock. Herrera off.
Spain now lead Ireland 2-0 at Yankee Stadium thanks to a goal by Juan Mata
Now some projectiles are being lobbed at Barantes while he's taking a corner.
Agreed BD and I agree with Gooner about Jesus Corona./
I heard today that Jose Mourinho is keen to offload Juan Mata. Either of you two interested in him?
Barantes trotting off to be replaced by Borges. Wasting time mainly.
Borges on for Barrantes as the Ticos make another substitution/.
I am interested in Juan Mata, but I heard he may be headed to Real Madris. Why Does Joe Mou want to unload him?
Mexico seem to be kings of the 0-0 draw.
I guess he doesn't fancy him. Apparently Sideshow is for the off as well. What about him?
A last ditch tackle on Kenny CVunnigham prevents a Ticos goal but leads to a corner./
Not interested in Side Show. I can See whty Joe Mou would want to unload him.
Spain have defeated Ireland 2-0 at Yankee Stadium/
Mopre objects being hurled. They should empty the stadium and award a forfeit win to the Ticos.
Bryan Ruiz really incites the fans and the Mexican players. I think it's a legitimate complaint by Bryan Ruiz as he's being pelted. The corner is finally taken and leads to nothing.
No not any more. The real fly in the ointment for us is an unsettled Cesc. Wenger can't afford to pass up the first option rather than let him go to United. We need players in other departments but Cesc playing for United is unthinkable. Wenger would have to go.
Chicha is thorugh and a timely block prevents him from giving Mexico the lead.
Zavala shoots well over a s a cross from Guardado was cleared.
I still believge that Cesc is headed to United. It's a hunch
Aquino is fouled just outside the box.
Agreed. Those fans have given Ruiz a gift. No way does the yank have the guts to restore all the time that idiocy wasted
OH! Chicha heads the free kick from Guardado inches wide.
Joe Campbell , Gooner's least favorite player, has been yanked while the Yank ref will not add time for that
Least favorite? I must introduce you to Chamakh and Gervinho.
Seven minutes of stoppage time. I guess the Yank ref knew to add on the extra time.
Yes. They can join Campbell at the losers party.
The teams in Seattle are entering the pitch. We need a really Gospel version of the National anthem to give us the time for the extra time here.
Guardado has a cross deflected for a corner. The corner from Guardado is headed away
Either that or Panama need to delay coming out on to the pitch
Another late Mexican corner.
Horrible corner from Guardado
It finishes 0-0 in the Azteca yet again. Mexico's fourth 0-0 draw in the Hex.
Now off to Seattle for the first World Cup qualifier there since 1976.
A must win for the U.S. as they would have sole possession of first place.
They're off from Seattle.
I think this is ideal. A draw and a piss poor performance by the Tri which might get their coach the sack.
Fabian Johnson shoots over as tyhe Pnamanians failed to head away a long throw.
Same line up as against Germany save Cameron for the suspended Jones
He is definitely on thin ice and now off to the Confeds Cup. A poor showing there should clinch it.
Jones is suspended quite often
Baloy wins a corner off of Jeff Cameron.
Head tennis off the Panama corner then a U.S. break materailizes to nothing
Great cross by Beasely and shot well over by Clint.
Ian darke says he has a concussion but only if that yellow card he picked up was heavier than it looked and it hit him in the head
I missed that remark from Ian , but definitely a classic remark from Ian.
