The Richest Match on the Planet
In the topsy turvy world of modern football, there is more money wrapped in the nPower Championship Playoff Final than any other match on the planet - an estimated $44 million. That's what this means today for Palace and Watford as they clash this morning at Wemberley. Unfortunately, it's a workday for me, so I'll be in and out while working on an article that has to get out the door before Friday. Drop on by for a cuppa and a chat if you're watching.

Good morning Bob.I just took the girls to school, so I will be watching the match on BEIN. I hope to enjoy the pleasure of your company.
The teams are out at sunny Wemberley.
Top scorer, Glenn Murray, will be out for Palace , but Wilfred Zaha seemed to be able to do the job at Brighton.
The playoff final is underway from Wembley.Martin Atkinson will be the ref.
Ian Holloway is a manager in this final for the third time in four seasons with a win and a loss for Blackpool. Joe Mou is in attendance.
UW could also be called Granada North because that is the other parent club.
Zaha finally had a chance to show what he can do. Fancy dribbling to get past two players, but ran the ball inches out of play.
Pudil concedes a free kick that Palace will take. It is lofted in and easily caught by Almunia.
Ekstrand is booked for a rash tackle from behind on Aaron Wilbraham
This is Palace's fifth playoff final.I don't remember Watford's last playoff final.I think it's their third, having won the previous two.
First corner of the match goes to UW as a through ball from Doley is cleared by Mile Zedinak. The corner is headed away by Danny Gabbidon.
Palace have a player down injured. The announcer says it's a South African midfield player/
The announcer also stated that the teams met on opening day with UW winning 3-2. So they start and conclude the season by facing each other
a breather for the players as the match has been played at a very high tempo.
Palace already forced into a change due to the injury. O'Keefe, on loan from Norwich, is on for Dickgacoi, who looked devasted to be coming off.
with Glenn Murray out , the next top scorer for Palace is Zaha with eight goals.UW have 40 plus goals between Troy Deeney and Matias Vydra, the Championship player of the year
Zaha did well to get past Chalobah and passed to Owen Garvan, whose shot was blocked.
It;s all Palace as UW clear, but no some relief as a pass goes out of play
Great blocked by Lloyd doyley from Garvan or else Palace could have been in the lead.
The bookies made Palace the second favorites for relegation to League One at the start of the season. They sure have exceeded expectations.
Mile Zedinak booked for a clumsy challenge on Vydra.
A UW corner as Wilbraham headed out the free kick
Speroni fumbled the corner from Pudil, but Palace cleared.
Zedinak is on thin ice the replay showed him with a stray elbow on Chalobah, climbing for a header. He;s already been booked..
Nice football from UW and a great block by Damien Delaney from Vuydra to prevent a goal. Corner to UW.
The corner is headed out by Zedinak and a cross by Anya is cleared/
Elton John in attendance , watching the club he previously owned.
Dean Moxey concedes a corner to UW
The corner is headed away then Anya blasts over.
Three minutes of stoppage time.
Halftime and 0-0. I'm hoping for a better second half as the match was played at a high tempo , but I don't recall either keeper being forced to make a save.
Checking in at half-time. 0-0 so far. I'm going to join you for the second half, mate.
Second half starting up again.
Hello Bob. Great to have the pleasure of your company. The second half is underway as Zola made a surprise substitution. Player of the year, Vydra is replaced by Geyjo. Was it due to an injury
Brazil vs England has been switched to Sunday according to soccernet. Kickoff is thirty minutes after the match you and Steve will be watching at RFK.
well wide by Chalobah, on loan from Chelsea.
Abdi has a shot blocked by Damian Delaney. He was pretty invisible in the first half.
Zaha did well to get past Cassetti, but the the cross was overcooked.
I have a feeling one goal will decide this. Cassetti with a foul on Zaha
Team line-ups check:
Palace - Speroni, Ward, Gabbidon, Delaney, Moxey, Zaha, Jedinak, Garvan, Dikgacoi (subbed by O'Keefe), Williams, Wilbraham.
Subs - Price, Richards, Bolasie, Phillips, Ramage, Moritz.
Watford - Almunia, Doyley, Ekstrand, Cassetti, Anya, Chalo, Hogg, Pudil, Abi, Deeney, Vydra (subbed for Geijo).
Subs - Bond, Hall, Yeates, Briggs, Battock, Forester.
Thanks for posting the lineups.
Did you see that the wedding on Saturday does not conflict with the Brazil vs England match. Are you heading straight to Gooner Central after the wedding?
Two consecutive fouls by Cassetti on Zaha. He's not far from a booking
I am heading down there after the wedding. Sunday morning.
Long free kick easily gathered by Almunia
Oh - Doyley wasted a chance there. These sides don't look as if they want to win this one.
I heard you are missing the England match for a less important match at RFK. I'm not pleased that both matches are being played simultaneously.
It was the same way in the first half. You didn't really miss anything.
I don't think either match is that important. Just money-spinning friendlies. But I am looking forward to seeing it with my bruvver.
Oh - big chance for Wilbraham. Blows it!
And now some argybargy.
It gets feisty as Wilbraham took too long to shoot with just the keeper to beat and his shot was blocked. Then Abdi fouled just outside the box and a Palace player kicks the ball in his face and for some reason Abdi is booked for that
O'Keefe also booked.
The free kick from Owen Garvan is headed away
I agree Bob. I was just teasing you because you are going to miss the England match., but the match at RFK should be a great occasion.
Delaney heads the free kick from Garvan well wide as the two Irishmen combined.
It's been a dreadful match and it seems destined to an extra thirty minutes of sheer torture.
The argy bargy has been the highlight of this poor match
OH! Great save by Almunia from O'Keefe as Zaha was put through on the break . He slipped but picked out O'Keefe
Super KEv on for John Williams as Palace get ready to take a corner.Sloppy UW defending aas Almunia saves from Wilbraham from two u=yars out and Almunia tipped over a cross from Garvan. UW struggle to clear the resulting corner
Unfancied Palace have had several chances to be in the lead. Will they rue this missed opportunities? Will 39 year old former watford striker Super Kev by the hero?
That really would be a Roy of the Rovers moment if SuperKev wins this one for Palace.
Who would you prefer to see in the Premiership next season - Palace or UW?
It sure would and Palace should have been two up already
would Super Kev be released if Palace play in the Prem? I just don;t see him playing at that level any more?
Only as a SuperKev supersub, surely.
Volleyed wide by Garvan as Super Kev headed down a cross from Zaha
Oh - decent move there. Cross over by Zaha, knock back by SuperKev, and then snatched by Garvan. Well wide and wouldn't have troubled Almunia in any case.
Perhaps, but I wonder if even that in the Prem.
I predict that this one will go down to penalties. And that the winner will by 20th in the Prem next season.
Palace have dominated the second half after a dour first half.
There are three balls on the pitch now...no, two of them are balloons.
Palace can win this if they can finish a chance. I think Palace would be 20th, but UW would be 17th or 18th.
The small Bacchoccio is on for Nathaniel Chalobah
Down to fifteen minutes of regular time now.
There have been lots of balloons on the pitch today
Great craic to the crowd, too. They deserve better than this poor spectacle.
Palace broke through Zaha , but Cassetti read that perfectly.
I agree,Bob. It was actually worse in the first half.
I'm not seeing anything from Watford today.
I find that hard to believe, MUR. This is shocking.
UW have some sort of transfer embargo in the summer transfer window. They would be stuck with this bunch of promoted.
That's even worse than I'd imagined. I don't see them as Premiership quality, unless Zola can get back into a time machine and go back and clone himself 11 times.
At least Palace have forced a few saves from Almunia and there was a fracar. There was naught in the first half.
I agree, BD. Palace do look the more likely to win this match.
Wilbraham nearly in there but Doyley got back to scoop it away.
Oh - Garvan with a volley on the turn. Straight at Almunia.
Ward picks up a yellow.
That's a hat-trick of slip ups as wilbraham has missed a hat t]rick of gilt edged opportunities. He allowed Doyley to clear than Garvan shot right at Almunia.
Inside the last ten minutes - I'm a wee bit peckish...and goalstarved at the moment.
Wilbraham has been pants. He should be subbed. The loss of Glenn Murray has hurt Palace.
A kick save by Almunia from wilbraham from a great work by Zaha
Oh - Almunia with another great save from Wilbraham there.
The wasteful Garvan has missed his last chance. It's Andre Moritz on and he's taking a corner straight away.
Andre Moritz, the young Brazi , is on for the industrious Owen Garvan. Casetti heads away the corner.
Ian Holloway must be having kittens on the sideline.
Si anyone more wasteful than Wilbraham. Garvan put in a decent shift
That is true, MUR.
Poor back header by Zedinak and Geyco forced a close range block from Speroni. Fernando Forestieri is on for Anya/
Another Udinese recruit Forestieri is on now.
Ian Holloway must feel like punching Wilbraham, Mancini style.
Less than five minutes plus stoppage time. Will we see another late, late show from one of these sides?
Forestieri goes down easily and Martin Atkinson is having none of it.
What happened the last time Watford were in the playoff Final
Troy Deeney with a bicycle kick well over off a cross from Geyjo after being put through by Bacchcio
Well wide by Deeney
I believe that they beat Leeds in that final with a winning goal from Yank center Jay Demerit.
Three minutes of stoppage time/
Three minutes of stoppage time to come now.
Zaha is in on the act of wasting opportunitioes as he took too long and hios shot was blocked for a corner. great work by O'Keefe.
Zaha looked a wee bit slow there to get his shot off. UWS is unconvinced that he'll make a mark at OT. On the evidence, you can understand his fear.
Great save by Almunia from a header by Zedinak off the corner.
Jedinak nearly nodded home the late winner. Palace surely deserve the win.
That's it. I'm off to the microwave to heat up my left-overs for work. Back in a tick.
It's 0-0 as we are headed foe thirty minutes of ET.
I concur with UWS and agree that Palace deserve a win.
ET is underway from Wembley as it is tea time in England and lunch time on the East Coast
The last time the Championship Final was 0-0 heading into ET was in 2002 in the Millenium Stadium/
Bob must be feasting on some leftovers as the lack of goals made him feel peckish.
Oh - great chance for the semi-final hero Troy Deeney. Speroni did well.
wasteful from Troy Deeney as he hesitated from a yard out and Speroni pushed the ball away from his feet
The Hornets are really giving it a go now in extra time.
The hairdryer treatment from Zola.
Based on this showing how does one team deserve to play in the Prem more than the other.IS this really the best way to decide?
Super Kev turns 40 in July
UW wins a corner.
I like the Bundesliga model. Two teams automatically go up on down in the retrospective leagues. Then the third bottom Bundesliga side has a playoff game against the third top in the second division.
It was a shocking corner from Palace's Moritz that was cleared by the first man
So it would have been Wigan v. Watford. One game and that's that.
The cross is headed out by Gabbidon for a corner
Bataacchio straight at Speroni from the corner.
Wasn't Danny Gabbidon at the heart of the West Ham defense during their last relegation season?
Half of the first half of extra time done now.
I agree too. A much more accurate indicator. It's actually a two legged playoff Final where I would have favored Wigan. In Germany it's your buddy;s Kaiserslautern against Hoffenheim.
Gabbidon definitely was, but was also part of the victorious playoff team with the Hammers last year. That says it all./
Forrestieri and Delaney down injured.
IS Alex nervous as his 1FC K lost the first leg 3-1?The second leg is at 2:30 PM EDT in K Town.
Sounds like Gabbidon is a Championship level player.
Stupid foul by Cassetti on Zaha.
Sounds that way. He may be sold this summer.
The free kick from Moritz is headed away
Delaney tries a curler from distance. Comes wide.
Delaney shoots wide from Just outside the box after UW could not clear.
Nearly half-time of this extra time. All signs point to penalties.
Dean Moxey booked for Palace.
PENALTY ! CASSETTI FOULS ZAHA IN THE BOX.
PENALTY TO PALACE. Cassetti has tripped up Zaha!
The replay shows it was definitely a trip in the box.
This could be curtains for UW and Palace into the Premiership.
It's all down to the veteran. Super Kev!
Roofs it - 1-0 Palace!
GOAL !!!!!
SUPER KEV PUTS PALACE UP FROM THE SPOT
ROY OF THE ROVERS STUFF!
Palace are now 15 minutes away from the Premiership and Ian Holloway is delighted!
I asked if Super Kev would be the hero and that question was just answered.
What a story! SuperKev with the winner.
The free kick from Forrestieri is headed out and it's halftime of ET
Can Zola regroup his troops for this second period of extra time. The Palace fans think it's all over.
You called it too. You said it would come down to penalties or did Cassetti ay the penalty?
Palace should be able to hang on for fifteen minutes, but that's why they play the game.
I thought it might go all the way to a penalty shoot-out.
The second half is underway. palace deserve their lead.
IS your buddy ,Red Devil, nervous? His team lost the first leg of the playoff 3-1 and play the second leg at 2:30 PM EDT today
Wilbraham is down injured, holding his knee.
I don't think he's nervous - he doesn't expect them to get promotion.
Zaha corner flagging it already.
They need to overcome a two goal deficit. It's a slim chance, but possible.
Zaha a hero too. responsible for all three playoff goals. He's scored two and won the penalty
Great keeping by Speroni as he gathered the ball as a corner from Forestieri was headed on.
Speroni is the only survivor from the Palace team that was in the top flight in the 2004-2005 season. He was the backup keeper that season.
UW will be ruing that loss to Leeds when the third choice keeper made a couple of clangers
Soft free kick as Moritz made contact with Deeney
Deeney has won himself a cheap free kick in a dangerous area. Watford's best chance.
The free kick from Abdi is straight to Speroni
Abdi hits it...Speroni is easily over to cover it.
Coming down to about five minutes now.
Elizabeth was giving Wilbraham stick when he was down supposedly injured telling him to get up. I said he missed four good chances. She said he 's the one lousing it up.
Palace deserve their win, but Ian Holloway knows how to coach these finals as it's his third in four years.
UW players wanted hand ball on Joe Ward. The rebound was blasted over.
Anywhere will do for Palace.
OH! Forestieri had a shot cleared off the line.
Superbly cleared off the line by Joe Ward and surely Palace have won
Struth!
Into stoppage time.
That's got to be it now.
Troy Deeney had a header cpme off a defender from a long ball. A second UW corner.
What was that? A nervous back header that Deeney nearly got onto. Corner. And another corner. Almunia is up now!
Oh - shocking corner that didn't beat the first man.
And that's it!
Enjoy it now boys - you're officially red hot favorites for the drop.
That's it as Palace players go potty as they win the playoff final 1-0 and will be playing in the Prem next season.
That's it for me too, mate. Enjoyed it. Back to the grindstone.
Agreed, Bob. Well done Ian Holloway who took over in November
Cheers Bob. Elizabeth and I are off to lunch. it was great chatting.Cheers mate.
