A Premier League/Champions League Play Off???
Chelsea and Arsenal could have to have a ONE OFF playoff game to see who finishes third in the Premier League. Certain scores could happen that they would end up with IDENTICAL RECORDS!
It would matter because the third place team automatically qualifies for the group stages. Fourth has to go through a qualifying round. Chelsea host Everton and Arsenal visit St. James' Park!
A playoff game would be played at neutral venue to be determined. I don't think it could be Wembley because of the rule of not hosting something two weeks before the Champions League Final. When would it happen? Chelsea play Citeh at Yankee Stadium on May 25th
Here are the possible permutations... some far fetched... some very doable!
Any of following score combinations would ensure Chelsea and Arsenal finish the Premier League season with identical records:
•Chelsea draw 0-0; Arsenal win 2-1
•Chelsea draw 1-1; Arsenal win 3-2
•Chelsea draw 2-2; Arsenal win 4-3
•Chelsea draw 3-3; Arsenal win 5-4
COULD HAPPEN!!

Any draw for Chelsea, coupled with Arsenal scoring two or more goals in a one-goal winning margin would leave them tied
I just took that quote from the BBC, I would think that the amount of goals Arsenal score would matter
A 0-0 and 3-2 would mean Arsenal would qualify having scored more goals
Thanks for the post, UWS. I saw that on Football 365 today. It should be a fascinating last day in the Wenger Cup. I think it would require a 2-1 Arsenal win and a 0-0 Chelski result. Could happen!
I think the next tie breaker should be head to head.Chelsea won both league matches vs Arsenal 2-1 , winning by that score at the EM on Sept.29th and by that score at SB on Jan 20th. If the teams finish level on points , gd, and goals scored then Chelsea should get third place due to the head to head record.
This should answer the question.
LONDON -- The Premier League says Aston Villa's stadium will host the playoff for third place between Arsenal and Chelsea if they finish level on points, goal difference and goals scored.
The match at Villa Park would take place on May 26, the day after the Champions League final in London and a week after the last round of matches in the Premier League.
Chelsea has a two-point lead over Arsenal going into their final games on Sunday. But if Chelsea draws against Everton, Arsenal can finish tied in the standings by beating Newcastle by a single goal while scoring two more than Chelsea.
Finishing in third place advances a team into the group stage of the Champions League. The fourth-place finisher must go through a qualifying round.
