Thanks for posting the thread for today's matches, mate. I should be able to be around for most of the early one and then I have to bugger off for a breast cancer charity event at the Buffalo Bisons.

I'm watching the end of a United friendly with some pick-up side from the A League. United have won 1-5 with two goals from new boy Lindgaard, two from Welbeck and one late one from RVP.

That should quiet the "Moyes Out" voices.

I'm checking in with the preview show on FSC and noting that these panelists will be bowing out in a week after this tournament ends. What a shame!

Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Teams are out on the pitch now doing the ceremonial bits and pieces.

3:29 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Good afternoon, Bob. I forgot about the friendly match. Lindgaard is not a new player. He's been in the reserves for a couple of years

There is a preseason tournament airing on FSC from July 27th through August 7th. I think that will be the last hurrah for this panel. It used to be called the tournament of Champions, but now goes under a new name.

The preliminaries are finished and we're set to go. Panama to kick off in red against Cuba in white.

3:36 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

They're off from the Georgia Dome.

Afternoon, MUR. Welcome aboard. Hope you're still enjoying some bike riding in unseasonably cool weather. We've got rain today, which has cooled us off too.

Blogger manunitedrules said...

Just discovered that former Citeh keeper, Bert Trautmann, passed away yesterday , aged 89.

3:37 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Unfortunately, normal service was resumed yesterday and it's back up in the 90s with heat indices over 100.Glad you got some relief.

3:38 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Cuba has been getting away with some early shambolic defending and their keeper dropped a long throw but got away with it.

3:40 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

So the winner of this one plays either T&T or Mexico in the semis.

3:42 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Correct. I would agree with David Lee Roth that it will be Panama!

3:44 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Did you hear that Bert Trautmann joined Mel Smith among those that passed away. Was he the German keeper playing for Citeh in a Cup Final in the 50s?

3:44 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Quintero of Panama appeared to be tripped in the box, but Yank ref, Mark Geiger , was well positioned and I guess he went down easily.

3:47 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Nice Van Halen reference, mate. I too agree that Panama are the favorites in this one.

3:48 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Malbalnche blocks and Panama win a corner.

3:49 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I believe so - Trautmann was the one shoved over the line by Nat Lofthouse in an incident that would be blown for a foul today.

3:49 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The corner from Gabriel Torres was cleared then he wins another

3:49 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Roberto Chen blasts over as if kicking a field goal for the Falcons.,

3:50 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Thanks mate. I was thinking of an excuse to use that reference.

3:50 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

You are thinking of a different keeper. Nat Lofthouse pushed a keeper over the liner when playing for Bolton vs United a few months after the Munich disaster. Truatmann broke his neck against Brum early in a Cup Final vs Brum and played the remainder of the match in that condition. He was a German paratrooper during WWII , but played for Citeh for about 15 years

3:53 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

All Panama pressure early doors. But, apart from that one penalty claim, not a lot of real chances.

3:55 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ramon Torres wins a Panama free kick just outside the box.

3:55 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Correct, Bob. Cuba defending well, but they have conceded a lot of second half goals in this tournament.

3:56 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

GOAL! Jose Ciprian has done it again -a goal out of nowhere!

3:57 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !!! CUBA TAKE THE LEAD IN THEIR FIRST ATTACK OF THIS MATCH, GREAT FINISH BY CIPRIAN

3:57 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Brilliant ball over the top there and didn't the striker do well to guide the ball inside that near post on the volley. Great goal!

0-1 Panama!

3:58 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It was Cuba's first lengthy spell of possession this match . A superb through ball and great finish that looked like something from a top rated side.

Penalty to Panama! It's all happening now!

3:59 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

PENALTY TO PANAMA AS CUBA IS CALLED FOR A HAND BALL.

3:59 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The replay shoed it was definite intentional hand ball . I am not sure why Cuba is complaining.

4:00 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

It definitely struck Malblanque's arm but I wonder if there was any intention there.

Gabriel Torres to take...and scores!

1-1!

4:00 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !!! 1-1 AS GABRIEL TORRES SCORES A WELL PLACED PENALTY

4:01 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Torres is the second leading scorer with four goals this tournament. Three have been from the spot.

4:01 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Malblanche booked for a foul probably out of frustration due to the penalty decision.

4:03 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Did you see that I responded to your statement about Bert Trautmann.

4:04 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Gomez shoots well over for Cuba from long range.

4:05 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

You're absolutely right about Trautmann - my myself.

4:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The Cuban keeper fumbles a shot from Blas Perez, but it is cleared away

4:07 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Perez hits one from distance and the Cuban keeper makes a hash of it. Quintero nearly on to the rebound.

4:07 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Thanks mate. Sorry you won't be around for the second match, which will probably the best of the quarters. It is definitely for a great cause. Hope all goes well.

4:09 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yeah - it should be good. One of my colleagues is doing a routine with a group of alums from the Buffalo Jills cheerleading outfit that does the Buffalo Bills NFL games. Should be a fun evening. I purchased a pink Fredonia shirt for the occasion.

4:11 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Molina does well this time from a Perez effort. Tipped it behind wisely.

4:11 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Great save from a long range effort by Blas Perez.

4:11 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Sounds like a great photo opp. Hope you will be posting pics.

4:12 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

GOAL! Gabriel Torres gets his brace and Panama are in the lead!

4:13 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The cross came in and Perez did ever so well to knock it down for Torres to volley home!

2-1!

4:14 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Panama here are showing the value of the traditional strike partnership, with some real chemistry between the two big men up front.

4:14 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !!! 2-1 PANAMA AS GABRIEL TORRES SCORES WIOTH A FAR POST VOLLEY FROM A CROSS THAT WAS HEADED DOWN BY BLAS PEREZ.

4:14 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm sure I will.

4:15 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Great British style goal with a great cross that was headed down. Poor defending from the Cubans as Torres and Perez were unmarked.

4:16 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Gabriel Torres now tied with Wondo with five goals this tournament.

4:16 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I don't like the idea of this match being played indoors. No footie matches should at this level

4:18 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A late corner for Panama. Another goal?

4:21 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A corner from Gabriel Torres is volleyed well over by Roberto Chen Two minutes of stoppage time.

4:22 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Halftime and Panama lead Cuba 2-1.

4:23 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Panama must be pleased with their response to that shock first Cuba goal by Ciprian. They've been patient and have shown their real quality.

Half time score - Panama up 2-1.

4:23 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Time for a late lunch as I slept in rather late today.

4:24 PM

Blogger manunitedrules said...

Godoy with Panama's first yellow card , for a nasty foul

4:49 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ariel Martinez with a long range effort straight Penedo.

4:50 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm off to the game, mate - enjoy!

4:51 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ariel Martinez is sent off for Cuba and it was a horror foul. I think Mark Geieger was correct

4:51 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Cheers mate. Have a great time.

4:52 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Definitely a red card As Ariel Martinez kicked Blas Perez in the stomach.

4:52 PM

Lopez booked for Cuba . Poor foul and he lost his temper. definite foul on Gabriel Gomez.

4:54 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Liban Perez is on for Yasmany Lopez. Smart move as Yasmany was begging for another Cuban red card. Also Ciprian lucky to escape punishment with a horrible foul on Panama keeper, Penedo.

4:58 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Carlos Rodriguez has a cross cut out for a corner off a nice long ball from Quintero.

5:00 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A possible shout for another panama penalty as a defender handled a shot with his arms out, but probably got away with it due tot he distance rom the shot.

5:01 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !!!!! 3-1 PANAMA AS CARLOS RODRIGUEZ SCORES WITH A GREAT FINISH. A CROSS FROM QUINTERO WAS POORLY CLEARED AND RODRIGUEZ TOOK ADVANTAGE WITH A GREAT FINISH.

5:02 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Quintero creating more havoc down the left as he turns the right back in side out then he passes to Gabriel Torres, who curls a shot from just outside the box about a foot over.

5:04 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Jairo Jimenez on for Godoy, who has already been booked.

5:05 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

now Jimenez leads a Panama counter down the right . A great pass to Blas Perez whose close range effort is saved.

5:05 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Cuba win their first corner of the match. It is cleared , then a long range effort from a Cuban player nearly clears the Georgia Dome or at least threatens the roof.

5:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Blas Perez did well to turn a defender , then with just the keeper to beats hot about a foot wide.

5:08 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Great long ball by Ramon Torres as Jimenez got behind the defense and his shot was turned around for a corner.

5:10 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !!! 4-1 AND LAS PEREZ SCORED WITH JUST THE KEEPER TO BEAT

5:11 PM

5:14 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

My satellite came back , but after the match finished. Panama scored two more goals, one through Jimenez and a second from Blas Perez as they ran out 6-1 winners. They play the winners of the next quarterfinal.

5:53 PM
