Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

RIP: Mel Smith (1953-2013)

Sad news out of Britain today that Mel Smith, one of the original cast members of the Not the Nine O'Clock News troupe, has died of a heart attack at the age of 60. Mel was a bit like the Phil Hartman of NNON, as the straight man that the more outlandish characters played by the likes of Rowan Atkinson would play off of. Here's a tribute from the Guardian:

By ironic chance, UWS had just emailed this brilliant sketch last night:

I am surprised he died at quite a young age. I remember watching him on the Sitcoms while living in England. A classic was in "National Lampoons European Vacation" when Chevy Chase had to use a translation machine to try to understand him due to his thick cockney accent. The son said " dad he's speaking English." He will be sorely missed.
