3rd/4th Place Match - Brazil v. Netherlands
Morning, chaps! Let's be honest - no one wanted to be in this match today. And yet they have to play out the string like professionals. Goodness knows what the Brazilian side is going to be thinking today, as they try to exorcise the national tragedy of Tuesday's drubbing at the hands of the Germans. On the up side, these matches tend to be open, high-scoring affairs, so we're unlikely to see a repeat of Wednesday's bore-fest between the Netherlands and Argentina. So, tune in with me to see the goals flying in this afternoon.
234 Comments:
Good morning Bob. I will be around. The Third Place matches are generally open matches. There have been at least three goals in every one of these since 1978. Perhaps the Dutch will open up.
FIFA have announced their picks for Golden Ball (MVP):
Golden Ball
Thomas Muller, Toni Kroos, Philipp Lahm, Mats Hummels (all Germany), Lionel Messi, Javier Mascherano, Angel Di Maria (all Argentina), Neymar (Brazil), Arjen Robben (Holland), James Rodriguez (Colombia)
That means that all of us are still in the hunt for this category.
Morning, MUR - hope you're doing well this weekend.
In the Young Player category:
Memphis Depay (Holland), Paul Pogba, Raphael Varane (both France)
And finally for the goalkeepers - it's the Golden Glove category:
Keylor Navas (Costa Rica), Sergio Romero (Argentina), Manuel Neuer (Germany)
Wot - no Timmy Howard?! Don't these FIFA jerks know by now that Timmy Saves the Universe?
A bit of trivia for you lot this morning. No third-place play-off has seen fewer than three goals since Poland 1-0 Brazil in 1974. Another reason to go nowhere this afternoon. This will be the night of Fred's hat-trick.
Correct Bob. I had mentioned that in my first comment. I think Timmy wasn't because FIFA historically picks from the quarterfinalists. I do agree with you about Timmy.
Not a chance! My Fred would be more likely to score. Their Fred will probably, for his own safety, be "rested."
The teams have a Desmond record vs each other. Holland winning 2-0 in 1974 and 2-1 in 2010. Brazil won 3-2 in 1994 in Dallas and in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in the 1998 semis.
You're probably right, mate. Fred was booed even after he was subbed when the big screen happened to capture him on the bench.
In German news, Toni Kroos has signed for Real Madrid for around £20 million. Cor!
The other big news is Di Maria possibly signing for United and Alexis Sanchez to the Gunners. Cor is absolutely right to discuss Kroos's move to Real.
Some more big news is that the Brazilian FA said that Big Phil would be kept on as the manager and Big Phil stated that he has no plans on resigning , stating that the job is not done. I guess he wants multiple repeats of the humiliation on Tuesday.
How on earth can Big Phil continue?
Good question. I don't know the answer.
Here's the team news for today"s clash:
Brazil: César, Maicon, Silva, Luiz, Maxwell, Gustavo, Paulinho, Ramires, Oscar, Willian, Jô. Subs: Jefferson, Victor, Dani Alves, Fernandinho, Marcelo, Hulk, Fred, Dante, Henrique, Hernanes, Bernard.
Holland: Cillessen; Kuyt, De Vrij, Vlaar, Martins Indi, Blind; Clasie, Wijnaldum, Sneijder; Robben, Van Persie. Subs: Vorm, Krul, Janmaat, De Guzman, Verhaegh, Veltman, Kongolo, Lens, Huntelaar, Memphis.
Referee: Djamel Haimoudi (Algeria)
Very interesting line-up from Big Phil. Out goes Dante and in comes Maxwell. Ramires replaces Bernard, Willian replaces Hulk and Jo replaces the infamous Fred.
One change for LVG - Memphis drops out and Clasie takes his place.
RVN in the studio is stressing how much Holland want this one.
Cor! Wesley Sneijder has been nobbled in the warm-up! What on earth?
It looks like a full strength Dutch team against Brazil's reserves. I would favor the Dutch to win.
I was reading on soccernet that Big Phil didn't even pick the best squad available. Lucas and Coutinho should have gone as well as two starters on Athletico who weren't even put on standby.I'm sure there are at least four current squad members who could have been left out.
Jonathan De Guzamn the Swan and Dutch-Canadian replaces Schneijder. That is a huge loss for the Dutch
I still think the two fellas at CSKA - Dudu and the other one - would have better options than Fred and Jo.
Actually, Thiago Silva replaced Dante and Maxwell House replaced Marcello.
Looks like Jonathan De Guzman will replace Sneijder. Slightly more defensive, no?
It just tells you that Big Phil had better options available than what he chose.
That's what RVN thought.
Brazil doubling down on the a capella rendition and displaying Neymar's shirt is the dressing room.
Jon Champion said that Hulk and Fred were removed due to public protests. does that make me Nostradavidus?
De Jong replaced. A Classie move by LVG.
Dutch fans didn't get tickets to this one, then?
They're off from the Brazilian capital. Will it be a Klose contest?
They're off from the Brazilian capital. Will it be a Klose contest?
And we're away - let the goalfest commence!
It seems that way or did they choose not to come? Denying fans access is a FIFA violation?
Wahay! Robben is brought down and we have an early penalty and real drama!
Thiago Silva denies a clear goalscoring oppo but stays on the pitch somehow.
PENALTY! THIAGO SILVA DRAGGED DOWN ROBBEN IN THE BOX. WHY WASN'T HE SENT OFF?
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!
RVP SCORES FROM THE SPOT AND IT IS ALMOST TOTAL SILENCE!
GOAL! RVP scores and the crowd falls silent and there is some booing as the goal goes in. Not at all the start that Brazil wanted. Will we see another tonking?
Corrupt refereeing. The rules are the rules host nation or not.
Jon Champion just said that Brazil have conceded more goals in this tournament than any other.
RVP moves on to four goals. If this produces a goalfest, RVP might get close to James Rodriguez's six goals tally.
That play showed that Brazil would not have done any better if Thiago Silva had started vs Germany.
Nice run and cross by Willian, but his Chelsea teammate , Ramires could not get to it.
Did anyone pick RVP for GBB?
A decent cross over from Oscar but Ramires couldn't reach it and you really didn't want someone like him on the end of it, did you?
The through ball from Robben for De Guzman was just too long.
The through ball from Robben for De Guzman was just too long.
Useless by Ramires and Robben is booked for a minor foul on Paulinho yet Thiago Silava wasn't sent off for the penalty? Has this officiating crew been paid off?
Nice pass from Oscar but a horrible cross from Maxwell House.
Nope - here are the choices:
Neymar - Blue Devil, Gooner, MUR, Red Dragon, WHR
Mueller - AZ Kicker
Messi - Matt, Red Devil, UWS
Suarez - Someone Said, Yellows
Diego Costa - Swansong
Higuain - Simon
Messi or Mueller could overtake JRod.
Oscar seems to have something to prove today. He's been pants in this tournament.
That can be said for the majority of the Brazilian squad.
I would love to see Brazil get thrashed again.
True - I'm surprised that any of the backfour survived today. They let in seven bloody goals!!
GOAL! Oh - my goodness! Blind has doubled the Dutch advantage!
Tragic defending once again. Really poor header from Sideshow back into the danger area. Great finish by Blind.
2-0!
GOAL !!! DAVID LUIZ LOOKED BLIND ON THAT PLAY . HE HEADED A ROUTINE CROSS STRAIGHT TO BLIND WHO PICKED HIS SPOT, SCORING WITH HIS WEAKER FOOT.
Did Big Phil throw this one as well?
His first goal for the Dutch national team.
I'm not sure . I guess he needs to pad his 401 K
I predict that the Dutch will finish the same place in this World Cup as Man United will in the Prem the 2014-2015 season.
Pathetic pass from the Sideshow. He's specializing in Horror Shows.
Oscar at least makes Cillessen work there with a low shot.
Oscar has a shot comfortably saved by Cillessen as he went past Classie.
Brazil have definitely not been Classie.
Your missus seems to think that the Brazilians have fixed this one.
Nice through ball as Oscar beat the offside trap with just the keeper to beat, but forgot how to trap a ball.
Boom boom, MUR!
No not the Missus. It was a story on the Mexican National news.
De Vrij ghosted past four defenders there - are they even trying?
Ta, Bob.
Clumsy by Paulinho on Wijnaldum
Poor cross by Kuyyt. He's better than that.
Elizabeth has just posted on my FB thread that "I think the Brazil coach took a dive and caused his team to lose by putting in bad positions for a big payoff. I believe it was a bribe."
Perhaps she's been influenced by the news coverage south of the border?
Brazil are trying when they attack, but not when they have to defend.
Jo has been completely absent - is he really on the pitch?
Yes. Her mum mentioned the story. She probably has. I'm not buying it.She needs to realize that Brazil are that bad.
I didn't see much contact there from Martins Indi.
BLOODY HELL! This ref is having a mare. Oscar dove. Martins never fouled him. Is the ref getting a nice payout?
Oscar to take the free kick and it's headed over by Sideshow.
The Sideshow with a shocking header off the free kick from the diver. They couldn't take advantage of the gift from the ref.
Robben feeds De Guzman on the top of the box. Completely open. Half chance over the bar.
Shot over by an unmarked De Guzman. He'll never be that wide open in South Wales/
BRAZIL ARE THAT BAD!
Kuyyt heads back a desperate long ball from Thiago Silva.
What was that ball from Sideshow? Straight to the keeper.
Then a long ball from Sideshow to who knows. Your guess is as good as mine
Robben fouled by former Bayerrn teammate , Luiz Gustavo. The free kick was headed away/
Maicon is claiming a pen but the foul by Wijnaldum was clearly outside.
COME ON! That was a bloody dive by Maicon. Never a foul by wijnaldum
The free kick from Oscar was headed out for a corner.
And now Wijnaldum concedes a corner.
Vlaar romped down the pitch but couldn't pick out RVP wide right.
Paulinho flicks out the corner from Willian . On the counter it's a poor cross from Vlaar , who was on the left wing./
I actually heard Jo's name!!
Jo is playing. It was a pathetic cross by him/.
He's worse than the average Jo.
How was De Guzman booked? He barely touched Oscar
Now it's De Guzman who goes into the book. The Dutch have to be careful now not to just start fouling the Brazilians.
Now it's De Guzman who goes into the book. The Dutch have to be careful now not to just start fouling the Brazilians.
De Guzman fouls again. And from the Oscar free kick, the ball trickles agonizing across the six yard line and out.
WTF? How did Oscar win a free kick? What was the linesman thinking? PAulinho failed to make contact as Luiz Gustavo flicked on the free kick from the cheater.
Kuyyt injured off contact from Maxwell House. It smelled like the dark roast. Really strong.
LVG will be back in Manchester on Monday and off for the U.S . tour by next Friday
Other than diving by Oscar to win free kicks , Brazil have showed absolutely no creativity.
RVP tries his hand at another goal. DIdn't quite connect.
The Sideshow gives the ball away twice in a matter of seconds then Julio Cesar saves comfortably from RVP.
I would think that the Side Show will be subbed at the half.
Ramires fouled by Vlaar just outside the D. That was actually a foul.
Brazil have certainly had more than their fair share of free kicks around the box.
The Sideshow to take.No it's Oscar into the wall then a horrible finish by Maxwell House.
And just about everyone has been really poor.
Two minutes of stoppage time to play then.
In to stoppage time.
That is true - they should have got at least one back.
The Dutch ending with an attacking flourish here and some possession. Brazilian fans beginning to tune up.
That's quite enough, then. Brazilian fans airing their views now as the players troop off.
0-2 Netherlands.
Halftime as the Dutch are two up. Boos by the Brazilian fans as their team have got what they deserve from this match: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!
Bob Ley said that Brazil last lost consecutive home matches 74 years ago. History in the making?
We're back on for the second half. I want more goals!
The second half is underway. According to the graphic, a team has never overcome a two goal deficit at halftime in World Cup History. I don't see that changing today
A bit of footwork there from Julio Cesar. The crowd enjoyed that quite a bit.
I want more Dutch goals.
Fernandinho is on for the second half for the ineffectual Luis Gustavo.
Ramires broke free but then overran it horribly.
Any halftime changes? Ramires wins a corner off of De Vrij.
Oh - Robben was on his bike again but had his shot blocked by Thiago.
Ramires fouls Robben on the counter and should have been booked. Wijnaldum heads well wide off a deflected shot from Robben.
Just that one Brazilian one.
Fernandinho wasn't any better vs Germany.
Thanks Bob.Brazil have three PSG defenders and three Chelsea midfielders in their lineup.
Some back and forth now but the Brazilians look really lumbering.
I don't rate either PSG or Chelski's chances highly then.
Maicon deservedly booked for a horrible foul on RVP. He was caught out of position.
Ferandinho with a clumsy one on RVP there. Yellow.
Agreed with both of your comments.
Really poor control from Jo as he collected a ball in from Maicon.
Hernanes coming on now for Paulinho who was hopeless in this tournament.
Hernanes on for Paulinho.
I'm certainly glad that we caught the action at the Grill from Ipanema early on in the tournament rather than for this match. That place must be a morgue today.
I agree with those two statements too.
Hernanes has only been on the pitch for a minute and he goes studs up on Robben. Shocking foul.
I would think so. It may be half empty.
Ron Vlaar is in an attacking mood today. Got a shot off on goal but was pulled back for an infringement.
How was he not booked for that when Wijnaldum was booked for barely tapping Oscar? So much for consistency.
One flash of brilliance there, with Ramires dancing into the area. Then shanked his shot wide.
OH! Just wide by Ramires. Brazil's best possession of the match
This Algerian ref has been right rubbish today.
He's been atrocious and really biased. Has been paid?
Daley was hit on his blind spot.
How was that a foul? Maicon ran into Kuyyt and if anything it should have been a foul on Maicon.
Brazilian free kick chance now. Sideshow over the ball....
Straight at the keeper, dipping though.
Sideshow with a free straight at Cillessen.
LVG angry at the ref and rightly so.
Oscar bursts into the box but Vlaar stops him. Has someone kidnapped Vlaar and replaced him with a quality defender over the past month?
Foot off the pedal from the Dutch in this half for sure. They could use some freshening up.
Atrocious cross by the Sideshow to whom?
Pato is another one who I expected to be in this squad.
Is Vlaar now in form in the hopes of being signed by a bigger club?
I think he's been out of form the past couple of seasons.
Oscar goes down and gets a yellow card for his trouble. That looked a penalty for me. Blind clearly caught him.
Oscar is booked for diving . About bloody time. The first player in this tournament booked for diving.
Another shocking decision by this Algerian referee.
Shame. A Brazilian penalty at that point would have opened this match back up.
Now Blind is being stretchered off. Looking at the replay that should have been a penalty. How did this ref get the third place match?
Blind has crocked himself fouling Oscar then and LVG makes his first change. Janmaat on.
Janmaart on for Daley Blind.
Twenty minutes left for Brazil to rescue this one and some of their failing reputation.
RVP is flagged offside after some audacious skill and a nice pass by Wijnaldum. Are you watching Brazil?
Hulk is coming on for Ramires. Not sure why? And the crowd's booing him. And some applause as well. Mixed.
Boos as Hulk is on for Ramires. Which one got booed?
Hernanes heads well wide off a corner won by Hulk.
Lucas Mora is another player who failed to make the Brazilian squad.
Robben goes down even more easily than Oscar did - why no yellow there? Would have been his second.
They certainly have no scarcity of good players around that a better manager could use. This Brazilian effort reminds me of Argentina under Diego Maradona's leadership. Lots of talent but a catastrophic management effort.
High and wide by The Green Man off a pass from worse than the average Jo.
I reckon that the Brazilian players would prefer to disappear right about now.
Absolutely, Bob. I couldn't have said it any better myself. I expected better from Phil the Pill as he was in charge when Brazil last won the World Cup.
More rubbish from Hulk there.
I agree. They are thinking BLOW UP REF!
I seem to remember that player power ruled in that 2002 effort with the three R's - Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo - running the team.
Brazil have at least given it a go in the second half.
That would explain it. They lack any leaders on the pitch this time around.
Oscar wins a corner off of Vlaar.
Oh - that was poor from Oscar. He's been pretty good this afternoon but that effort at a curler was all wrong.
Oscar high and horribly wide off the short corner.
It's like a morgue inside the stadium. will the fans stay to watch the Dutch get their bronze medals?
Poor cross from Willian easily caught by Cillessen.
Fans now can scarcely bear to watch the efforts of their home team. Ten minutes of this left.
I wouldn't mind seeing Robben sent off right about now.
Robben wants a penalty. It never was . He ran into Thiago Silva
It would liven up this match.
Hernanes has a run very similar to an eight year old playing on a schoolground, just trying to bulldoze his way through.
He has been very disappointing . he had a good Confeds Cup, but awful today.
Hulk takes another free kick...and hits the first man. Sigh.
The free kick from Hulk is headed out by Wijnaldum/.
