I't all yellowing in Castelao… but mostly Brazil yellow
Colombia have an uphill task
Taking on the host… Colombia have never reached this stage before, have not beaten Brazil since 1991(12 matches)
Brazil: Julio Cesar, Thiago Silva (c), David Luiz, Fernandinho, Marcelo, Hulk, Paulinho, Fred, Neymar, Oscar, Maicon
Colombia: Ospina, Zapata, Yepes (c), Sanchez, Armero, Gutierrez, Rodriguez, Cuadrado, Guarin, Ibarbo, Zuniga
Brazil bring in Citeh's right back Maicon ahead of Dani Alves
ESPN gets us started
Brazil wearing damn white shorts…wears the blue!!!!
Brazil have never worn white shirts since they lost in the 50 Final… why have white on at all!!!
Hello UWS. Blame FIFA . Gooner said they are micromanaging by dictating that the shorts have to match or nearly match the shirts. I agree that it is ridiculous.
Did you watch the hot dog eating contest? It was more interesting than France vs Germany.
I didn't watch…. I didn't want to have a barfarama!!!!
Thanks for starting us off, UWS - great image. I'm back after a quick errand.
I don't like that Brazil line-up - if anything, it's even more defensive with the more forward-looking Dani Alves retreating for Maicon.
Didn't see the hot dog fest - did Joey Chestnutt survive another year? I keep expecting him to explode a la Mr. Creosote.
Brazil have reached the Quarters six times in a row BUT they have only gone further once…2002
Yes . He won , but did not break the world record. He ate 61 hot dogs in ten minutes. The the world record is 69 in ten minutes.
How about 1994 and 1998?
Slightly more conservative approach from Pekerman as well, with the speedy Jackson Martinez dropping to the bench in place of midfielder Victor Ibarbo.
Maicon is the main change. I think it's a similar lineup to the one vs Chile. I would love to see the coffee makers win this one. will they?
Will this one go to another shootout? It's Neymar vs J Rod in a battle of 22 year olds.
I'm all Brasil today - I had them going all the way.
Since 2002
I had them winning the tournament, but Colombia are a fun side to watch.
Maicon actually defends… unlike Alves that just goes forward all the time and leaves his side of the field wide open
Then yes. They were eliminated in the quarters the past two tournaments.
I guess Maicon is up as cover for Alves to thwart the Colombian threat.
How many actually have Brazil winning?
It would help my chances
well stated about Colombia being in their first quarter. A tremendous tournament for the Coffeee Makers. The first time in the quarters for the Ticos too.
I reckon that Brasil should be Brasil - go out and try to score one more than the other side.
It's going to take ages for the national anthems… both of them sing extra verses
Captains about to make a speech about discrimination
Nine people picked Brazil.
Of course, only Brazilians and Portuguese can understand him
Now most of the rest of central and south america can understand
Yes. It's FIFA's anti discrimination day. it should be 365 days a year, nit just once a year.
I reckon you understood the Spanish version better.
Quite a lot of voices heard for the Colombian national anthem… now the host…should be a lot louder
A national holiday in both Colombia and the U.S. !
I think the messages would be more meaningful if the players actually wrote and read their own statements.
It sure is.
I agree Bob. Everything is scripted and lacks sincerity.
There's an England flag!!!
Wishful thinking from that fan buying tickets for this one
Back from my water break and now match fit.
Now Brazil have to go out and keep these fans in a frenzy
Probably so - there were a lot of England fans who only booked in for the last match of the group stage, expecting that they'd also be able to see a Round of 16 and quarter final. Oops.
Agreed, UWS - I hope Brasil will go after Colombia. No fear.
The Spanish ref is very picky. I wonder if they will finish with 11 vs 11.
Sitting here all alone
Kathy is in the kitchen but busy with paperwork
No kids around… sigh
Colombia will wear red shirts today.
They're off!
And Colombia get us underway, wearing their red change strip.
What kind of pass was that from Hulk… kadoomph
Jacquelyn is keeping me company. She is busy typing commands on her tablet that translate to dog language. Sparky is too busy napping to be amused.
Walking pace from the off - not inspiring.
A pass that an angry green man would do.
Great tackle by old man Yepes on the Hulk.
Interesting fact said there from Ian
Last 8 teams to win on pens went out the next round
At least we don't have to worry about that as England fans
Mario Yepes retires once Colombia are eliminated from the World Cup. Is this his last match?
Fred wins a free kick.
Brazil get an early free kick chance now. Sideshow to blast one?
David Luiz likes to shoot from this range
Neymar with a hopeless effort
The free kick from Neymar is well wide . Really poor.
Doesn't sound like Sparky is going to last the 90 minutes.
Neymar curls one well wide. A blast from Sideshow would have been the better choice.
The free kick from Neymar is well wide . Really poor.
Very few good free kicks in this WC
Where's Zico? Beckham?
Sparky has been napping for the past three hours. I don't expect him to awaken this match
Poor start for Maicon. He must be ancient now!
That takes talent
MUR replats a post with BD sticking one in the middle!!!
Brazil doing the early running. Corner now.
I guess France in 1998 was the last team to win a shootout and advance. They were the host nation as is Brazil.
GOAL! Thiago Silva at the back post!
1-0!
GOAL
THE CAPTAIN PUTS THEM AHEAD
Weak defending… bundled in at the back post
Hapless defending from the Coffee Growers. Thiago ghosted in at the back stick with no one marking him. Ball went straight through every one.
Now Brazil have to add to that
They failed to do so against Chile
First time Colombia have been behind all tourney
GOAL!!! THIAGO SILVA SCORES OFF THE CORNER THAT NEYMAR WON. THE CORNER WENT OVER THE SIDE SHOW AND SILVA EASILY HEADED HOME.
This will be a good test for Colombia now. They were in a weak group and then had a toothless Uruguay to face in the Round of 16.
Stupid challenge by Oscar
Free kick Colombia
I am confused. I possess a talent?
High, wide and horrible from Guarin.
Free kick different but just as bad as Neymar
Thaigo Silva's goal off his inner thigh
I think France in 1998 were the last team to win a shootout then advance the following round. Is that correct?
Struth… I thought that was in!!
Coner
Oh - just a whisker away by Guardrado. Corner.
Cuardado has a shot deflected just wide for a corner
USELESS corner… beat the first man!!
IT DRIVES ME NUTS
I see. Bob was caught in an MUR sandwich. Ta, UWS.
I just checked to see if Colombia actually borders Brazil… it does
In fact, only Ecuador and Chile don't!!!
Was Ferdy booked… he should have been
Definitely late by Fernandinho on J Rod. Biased refereeing.
I don't think a foul was even called. Definitely not booked. This ref is giving the home team all the calls.
Great geography lesson.
Great geography work, UWS.
Ta
Brazil were ahead early vs Chile Con Carne , but still had to go to a penalty shootout. The same today.
Brazil have another corner…can they score again..
no..cleared but back in again.. Hulk is too slow!
Neymar to swing another corner over. The last one led to a goal....
Cleared out partially and then Hulk had a great run and cross. Deserved a finish.
Colombia got away with a horrible defensive error by Cuardado as he lost possession just outside his box.
I disagree - Hulk laid a great ball over. No one in the middle to finish it - where was Fred?
OUCH on Maicon!
He was taking a cat nap!
Great save by Ospina from Hulk then he savers easily from Oscar.
Maicon does a horrible bit of acting
Hulk with a shot saved followed by Oscar
Oh - great save from Ospina after a super one-two finished by Hulk. Then Oscar hit a tame one.
I just checked. Fred is in the castle napping.
Colombia finding it difficult to get out of their own half.
It looks as if the Brazilian Fred is having a kip as well.
Not a smart back heal by Neymar… not punished
He seems to be napping.
Not a good effort by Hulk… hit it into the ground… WHACK IT
Awful pass by Cuadardo after a superb break and pass from J Rod.
Great turn and run by Rodders…. Brazil look stretched… blown
Brazil go down… end to end so far
Keep it up
Nice back and forth to the match now - pretty open with lots of chances. Much different from the earlier one.
Some handbags now after James is roughed up - and the ref has played on!
Oh - Paulinho nearly ran through the whole Colombian defense!
Agreed. This match is much more exciting.
That was strange… handbags trying to protect Rodders and then Colombia take it quick but lose possession… not punished by Oscar
Oh - Hulk does everything wrong but then feeds Marcelo who has his shot deflected wide.
Marcello has a shot deflect off Fred for a goal kick after some fancy footwork from Hulk.
Colombia are coughing up the ball too cheaply.
Useless cross again by Marcelo but it does come back to Hulk… nice save
Oh - another great save from Ospina. Is he going for Timmy Howard's record? Hulk was again the attacking outlet.
Great save by Ospina from Hulk then a foul is called against Brazil.
This match will need to go tot ET for Ospina to break Timmy's record.
Did you notice that someone posted Timmy Howard's name and photo under the "Secretary of Defense" tag in Wikipedia?
so a lot those kind of posts
I did not see that. Really hilarious!
The tackles are flying in fast and furious , almost like a Prem match
http://nypost.com/2014/07/02/us-goalie-tim-howard-delivers-record-setting-effort/
And apparently the real Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel tweeted that Timmy deserved the title. That's quality.
Pure class.
Maicon wins a corner. Fernandinho heads wide from the corner.
Just over hit by Neymar but gets a lucky corner
Front post crap again.. goes out for a goal kick
The only goals today have been from set pieces.
Fernandinho commits a foul in the half circle.
Wide open in the box but the control sucks
Not a free kick in my book but free kick inside the D
Here's something to occupy you lads at half time - a Guardian quiz to find out which World Cup star you'd be.
I got LUFC academy legend Jamie Milner, Mark Enderle got Pirlo and Gooner got Suarez!
Sorry - here's the link:
http://www.theguardian.com/football/quiz/2014/jul/04/which-world-cup-2014-player-are-you
The Brazilians should have been booked for not being ten yards.
Two men were not ten yards away… how did the ref not see it
I sent a link for Timmy
What was your link?
J Rod takes the free kick and how did the Brazi players get away with leaving the wall before the free kick was taken? Home team officiating?
Too much falling down here
High and wide by Hulk. A poor effort.
Oh - great move but Hulk made the wrong choice by blasting over at an acute angle.
Absolutely RUBBISH by Hulk… is he a professional? International? Brazilian?
If Brazil win the World Cup would Julio Cesar become the first player to win a World Cup while playing with an MLS team?
I think he's been one of the best Brazilian players today. Sure, he's wasted a few but he's had several shots on goal as well.
Brazil 1-0 Colombia
Hulk! Lovely touch but the decision making of a man in the Trafford Centre at 7pm on Christmas Eve.
Anything will do - and he batters a shot high and hard over the top with two men waiting for the cut-back.
I think that's fair.
Just fall and the ref will blow up
Dangerous free kick chance now for the Brazilians. Neymar will want this one.
How is that a free kick. Neymar was barely touched then flopped down once he saw he lost control of the ball.
Will we have a decent attempt this time
Useless again
Neymar takes and....it's well wide. Let someone else take one, mate.
Poor free kick by Neymar. High and wide. What sayeth UWS?
That was a nasty tackle
Cynical foul by Zuniga on Hulk. Fortunate not to be booked.
A minute of stoppage time.
James hasn't been in this one - they've been inside his shorts today.
That's half-time, then. Brazil have been well worth their one goal lead; it could have been more.
Oscar doesn't take the space given to him
Hulk with an atrocious effort of a pass
half time
Brazil lead 1-0 at the half. They are in control, but will Colombia score in the second half?
Did you lot try the Guardian quiz during half-time? If so, which footballers did you get?
Adrian Ramos on for Victor Ibabrbo as the second half is underway.
Not yet. Jacquelyn kept me occupied.
Brazil have a lot of players on a yellow and could miss the semi
The records get erased after today
Neymar, Thiago Silva are a couple in trouble
Ramos in for the ineffectual Ibarbo. I would have had Jackson Martinez back. He looked useful against Uruguay.
I am surprised Jackson Martinez was dropped. He's had an excellent tournament.
A ridiculous flop there from James.
Armero goes down under a challenge from Hulk. That seemed rather innocuous.
Why is Leeds owner Massimo Cellino not keen on his the club's goalkeeper Paddy Kenny?
He objects to Kenny playing for the Republic of Ireland as he was born in England
He thinks Kenny's date of birth is unlucky
He bought Kenny in Championship Manager and it worked out badly
He is suspicious of people whose surnames are forenames
The free kick from Cuardado is headed away,
Decent free kick there from Guardrado but it was well cleared out by Thiago.
Sounds like Vincent Tan with the numerology. Bob will not be pleased that Leeds's new owner is another head case.
What is the answer to the question?
I saw a picture of him.. he's really chubby
Now Brazil have a set piece. Taken short then a cross from Neymar is poorly headed wide by Hulk.
I don't want another one niller
I heard that story the other day - it's his unlucky birthdate. Massimo is a headcase.
Got it
Did you see the picture of Kenny…. yikes
Me either. We haven't seen a goal from open play today. Both were early goals.
Is he fatter than me?
Sorry Bob. You deserve better.
I need Messi to score a hat-trick tomorrow
Neymar not score today
Rodders out
All of these I want and need
I don't want but need a Dutch loss tomorrow as well
How many have picked Holland in the semis
I would think most had them go out against Brazil
The Belgians will mark Messi out of the game and Neynar will come up trumps in the final.
Unfortunately, Brazil seem to be merely defending their one-nil lead now. They seem to egging Colombia on to do something and the Colombians don't have the quality to break them down.
Paulinho was corner flagging it there - at the 56th minute mark!
Brazil are not impressing me this half
I had the Dutch finishing runner up in their group and going out to Brazil in the round of sixteen.
This has been another horrible match and the ref is letting Brazil get away with murder.
I have both the Dutch and Brazil because I had Spain going through top of the group and the Dutch second. Put them into a different bracket.
Volleyed horribly high and wide by J Rod after Colombia's best spell of possession this match.
The ref has to start booking some people - mostly for diving. I'm sick of it. Stay on your feet!
Marcelo called for foul on Cuardado. He calls the soft challenges , but lets the cynical fouls go. This ref is horribly inconsistent.
It was a brilliant first half - Big Phil must have really done a number on them in the dressing room.
Bloody Hell. That was horrible by Neymar. Never a foul. really disgusting.
More histrionics when Guardrado merely obstructs him. Should be an indirect free kick. Big deal.
