Alright then, the first quarter final has been consigned to The Deuce. No matter - we're all here. Bring on the big boys.

Here are the starting XIs for this afternoon:

Germany: Neuer; Lahm, Boateng, Hummels, Howedes; Khedira, Schweinsteiger; Kroos, Ozil, Muller; Klose

France: Lloris; Debuchy, Varane, Sakho, Evra; Cabaye, Matuidi; Valbuena, Pogba, Griezmann; Benzema.

The man in the middle: N Pitana (Argentina)

Very interesting. Mario Goetze gets the chop in favor of World Cup hero Miroslav Klose. Lahm is back to his regular position at right back ahead of Mertesacker with Boateng sliding over. And Sami Khedira comes in in the defensive midfield position.

11:35 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Griezmann is favored to Giroud up front for France. Valbuena and Pogba will do the creative work while Matuidi cleans things up in midfield.

Jon Champion and ex-Gooner Stewart Robson on the microphone today.

Blogger manunitedrules said...

Good morning Bob. Happy Fourth. There are two mouth watering encounters today.

11:45 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Moving Lahm back to right back was the correct decision. That is his best position. I am surprised that Klose is starting. Will he break the all time scoring record today or wilt in the heat?

Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Happy 4th of July, MUR. Nothing better than your plan for the day. We're watching the matches, doing some yard work and then heading downtown for the fireworks after dark.

11:52 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I wouldn't be surprised if Klose got his goal today. He certainly knows the way to goal.

11:53 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A great plan . It's a shame that the Gooner's travelling plans were Mullered. I know you were looking forward to him joining you for the fireworks. I hope you and Kate have a great time.

11:53 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

No yard work for me. I have been doing chores around the house.

Blogger manunitedrules said...

FIFA is trying to be politically correct.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN.

12:01 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Gooner will not be pleased that Giroud and Mertesacker have been dropped.

12:02 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Kate with a spirited rendition of La Marseillaise a moment ago. Allez Les Bleus!

12:02 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

They're off from the Maracana.

12:03 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

And we're away - I'm neutral today but hoping for a great game with loads of goals.

12:03 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Well done Kate. I second that.

12:03 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Me too. The French are in better form , but form goes out the window in this fixture.

12:04 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A warm , humid day in Rio. French Riviera weather?

12:04 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Pitch-side temperature in the Maracana is 30 C - pretty steamy.

I went to wake up Jacquelyn and saw a scramble in the German box.

Hey Boys
Happy 4th

I am just back from coaching a soccer camp this morning

I walked in as the match started

12:06 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Just got your text Bob

12:06 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

First major attack for the Germans - well blocked out by the French.

12:06 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Great timing, UWS - welcome!

12:07 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I can't believe Brazil haven't played at the Marcana once

12:07 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Pretty warm for a winter day. About that now in Harlingen , but it will warm up this afternoon. Will they be taking the mandatory water break?

12:07 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Who's watching with you at Casa Nocito?

12:07 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Good afternoon UWS. Happy Fourth. Perfect timing. I think we are in for a treat with two great matches.

12:08 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I haven't heard anything about a water break, but I'd be in favor of those in the Prem as well. I could use a bathroom break in the middle of the match.

12:08 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I heard it's been stormy in your area , UWS. Is that true?

12:09 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I think so, too, MUR. A lot of my friends were hoping that the underdogs would get through but who wants to watch Switzerland v. Nigeria? This is a proper quarterfinal.

12:09 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed Bob. The players don't need them but we do. A really nifty idea.

12:10 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yeah - we'd had the remnants of Arthur sweeping through. That's what hung the Gooner up at the airport last night. He'll be joining us tomorrow at noon. Beautiful day today.

12:10 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Benzema volleys wide off a great cross from Valbuena.

12:10 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

THe weather here is pretty cool after some steamers
I am alone watching the match… Kathy just came in

Matt is still struggling to get out of bed!!
Jon is off at someone's camp all weekend and Tom is camping with some friends until Sunday morning

Hiya Steve

12:11 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Steve isn't there… I must have missed that

12:11 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Matt's in bed during quarter final day? Shame on him!

12:12 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed Bob. Maradonna criticized the Argie National team on Venezuelan telly, saying only Messi has had a good world Cup. He's a fine one to talk. Does he remember that the team didn't perform any better when he was in charge last World Cup?

12:12 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yeah - Arthur put the kibosh on his flight last night. No room on the flights today.

12:12 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

True - but the Argies had been really ordinary with the exception of Messi.

12:13 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Naughty Matt. It's already past noon. Jacquelyn just woke up. She and I are alone with the pets. Melanie is in summer camp and Elizabeth is helping a friend who just had knee surgery.

12:13 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Griezmann got behind his marker and cross dangerously toward Benzema. Hummels cleared out.

12:14 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Greizman breaks the offside trap but a crappy cross… heard that before in the WC

12:14 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

France should have taken the lead . Griezmann with a poor pass when he just had to square to Bernzema to tap in.

12:14 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

GOAL… HUMMELS WITH A TEXTBOOK HEADER

ONE NIL

12:15 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL!!! HUMMELS GIVES GERMANY THE LEAD.

12:15 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

A great cross too…haven't been much of the either this WC

12:15 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

GOAL! Hummels down the other end starts the Germans off today. Great delivery and great header in.

1-0 Germans!

The French paid the price as second later Toni Kroosed in a free kick that Hummels headed home.

12:17 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

First time they have been behind

12:17 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed UWS. It was a great Kroos.

12:17 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I agree - that will certainly open things up. The French look capable of striking back.

12:17 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Good attacking there by the French through Pogba and Cabaye. They're going for it.

12:18 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

boom boom MUR

12:18 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Please send some cooler weather my way. I thought the flight was weather related because the summer camp people in the Catskills emailed us that there had been bad weather since Wednesday. Should be beautiful weather for fireworks in the evening.

12:19 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ta, UWS. I had been waiting to use that one for a while.

12:20 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That was clever, MUR - you've been dreaming those up all morning, haven't you?

12:21 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Is it true that the U.S. had a chunk taken out of their World Cup in the Round of sixteen.

12:21 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ta, Bob.I have thought of only a few. When you are alone you have plenty of time to think of those.

12:22 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I still think it was a more than successful World Cup campaign for Jurgen and the boys.

12:22 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Germany have only received two cards?

12:23 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Valbuena looks like he would fit into the tiki taka Barca side really easily.

12:23 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

That was an awful one

12:24 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Not surprised by that - the refs have been really stingy with the cards. How many reds have there been? Four or five?

12:24 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I agree , Bob. I thought the U.S performed admirably with a very difficult schedule and a lot of travelling. I was using my Chunk pun. Sorry you didn't like it, UWS.

12:25 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

So, the winner of these two matches will not meet at the Maracana…. the only possible Brazilian match at their "main" stadium would be the Final

England diid't play away from Wembley in 66 or 96

12:25 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I thought the Germans would have had a few more. I think that sounds about right, Bob.

12:26 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

True - I don't know why the organizers did that.

12:26 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Klose throws himself to the ground looking to get an advantage. The giant Argentine isn't impressed.

12:27 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That really odd, but it does give the Brazi fans in different locations a chance to watch their team . I like it.

12:27 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I agree with the giant Argie.

12:27 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

James Rodriguez is still out in the lead on the GBB front but Mueller and Benzema could have something to say about that today. And Neymar in the later one.

12:28 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Come on Messi

I WANT THE LANCER CUP

12:28 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Great defending by Evra on Mueller off a nice through ball from Khedira.

12:28 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

COME ON NEYMAR. I have all my eggs in the Brazil and Neymar basket.I'm still in it.

12:29 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Neymar will lance away Bob and Dave's chances of winning the Lancer Cup.

12:30 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

You've certainly got an impressive lead, mate. All of us picked Germany to advance today.

12:30 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

If there is a water break then I will take one too.

12:31 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

There will be no PPP changes in the quarters because other than the Argie vs Belgium match , everyone had the same predictions. The lead changes will not occur until the final, if there are any.

12:32 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Good idea, mate. Free kick to the Germans now.

12:32 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Howedes volleys over a free kick and somehow a corner was given.

12:33 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

LLoris punches away the corner for another as it was Kroosed in.

12:33 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The next corner was Muellered as the short corner went horribly wrong.

12:34 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I could get the full 16 points - I don't think anyone else could. I guessed Brazil, Germany, Netherlands and Belgium.

12:34 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

No mandatory water break. It must be less humid in Rio than Harlingen.

12:35 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Is it 16 or 12? UWS would still have the lead , but it would be trimmed. I can get nine as I picked Germany, Brazil, the Argies, and Spain.

12:36 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

A good chance there for the French - great save Neuer. although he seemed slow to get down.

12:37 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Great save by Neuer from Valbuena then the rebound from Benzema is deflected over by Hummels. The corner leads to another.

12:37 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Pogba and Sakho have clearly been swapping hairstyling tips.

12:37 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I picked Brazil, Germany, Argentina and… sigh… England

12:37 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The corner from Valbuena is improperly headed out as Sakho heads wide.

12:38 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The same as you, but Spain instead of England.

12:39 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Evra with another hopeless cross

12:39 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I was sitting in the front flower bed doing some weeding the other day and my next door neighbor said that I looked like a garden gnome. Charming, eh?

12:39 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Ouch Bob

12:40 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A real lovely neighbor.

12:40 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I was being sarcastic. Sorry Bob.

12:41 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Argentina Belgium up first tomorrow followed by Holland and Costa Rica

Costa Rica will be one of only five still alive!!!

Will Steve be in for those matches?

12:42 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That's alright; he's a good neighbor.

12:43 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Debuchy with a clumsy challenge on Howedes. We used to seeing that in the Prem when watching the Toon.

12:43 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That would be one of the great upsets in World Cup History if the Ticos win tomorrow.

12:44 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Benzema has had some chances…. nothing yet

12:45 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Claim by Benzema for a handball - it was ball to hand on Hummels at worst.

12:45 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Any pool breaks today. I like the picture that was posted on LOB yesterday. Nice pool.

12:45 PM

12:46 PM

Please send us some of that weather. We never have those days in the summer.

12:47 PM

Benzema straight at to Neuer.

12:47 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

BOOM BOOM BOB.

12:47 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Mike Nocito apparently said that he'd have preferred it if there had been a higher water level in the pool. I'm getting loads of abuse this week!

12:47 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It sounds like highway Robbenry.

12:48 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

One additional minute of stoppage time then.

12:48 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A minute of stoppage time after reading Mike's naughty comment.

12:48 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Half-time, then. 1-0 Germans. How will the French respond after the interval?

12:49 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Halftime and 1-0 to Germany thanks a header Hummeled in off a great Kroos.

FA Cup final to take place on May 30 at Wembley

Premier League final day scheduled for May 24

Berlin to host 2015 Champions League final on June 6

BLOODY HELL ! That is really late. The Fa Cup Final was once on that date, but the CL final has never been held in June. IS there a late start to the season too?

1:02 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It will be four straight semis if Germany wins today. They were runners up in 2002 and third in 2006 and 2010.

1:03 PM

Don't think so

1:03 PM

We're back on for the second half at the Maracana.

1:05 PM

Interesting about the Tour de France. I'm glad it's being held in England. I think it's been in France, Germany, and the Benelux countries in the past. Well done!

France gets it down the right… useless cross again

Where's the quality?

1:06 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Griezmann tries a backward flop. Nothing doing.

1:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I agree Bob. The only good thing is that the CL Final will be on my first day of summer vacation. A great way to start that.

1:09 PM

Useless by evra as he beats the offside trap or did he? Great free kick by ValBuena and Evra should have headed into the back of the net.

1:10 PM

It just started raining. I hope the satellite doesn't go out.

1:10 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Ozil's passing is atrocious!!!!

1:11 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

UWS should get his saying registered with the patent office.

1:11 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Oxil wins a corner off of Cabaye. Useless corner as a foul is called.

1:12 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Ozil's form has really fallen off. Something wrong in his head. I wonder if it will extend to the Premiership season or whether Arsene can sort him out. He can be brilliant when he's on his game.

1:12 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

That wasn't a foul on the keeper… wimps

1:12 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

DAMN! THE SATELLITE JUST WENT OUT!

1:12 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Griezmann seems the danger man. Nearly got on to that but his touch betrayed him.

I haven't seen that game since his first stint of matches in the Prem

1:13 PM

Great ball over from Kroos to Lahm but his pass was poor.
