THE WORLD CUP FINAL!!!!
So… after a month of games we are down to the LAST one.
The 20th World Cup Final… sort of.. 1950 had no final!
A Final that we have seen before. A repeat of the 1986 and 1990 Finals. Both teams each got a win in those two, who will get the tie-breaker?
Germany have impressed many during the tournament… no more so than their opening game thumping of Portugal and their crushing of the hosts in the semi. Can they continue this form?
Argentina won all their group games and two knockout games but all by one goal and snuck thru on penalties in their semi. They have not looked impressive at all… will that change?
Will Argentina really rub it in to all the Brazilians and win it on their own turf or will Germany become the first European nation to win the World Cup in South America
Of course, there is the small matter of the Lancer Cup… it looks like a Battle of the Brothers. I would think Bob is my corner… it costs $15 to send a box of stuffing across the Atlantic! How much will it cost to send the Cup… Good luck having Tony pony up the money in two years to send it back!!!!! May the best man win!!!

Good morning everyone I hope this is a good final. It should be tasty as Pasta Rizzoli is the ref.
Morning, chaps - I'm excited about the final, too. Thanks to UWS for a splendid graphic and opening discussion. I've got a small gathering coming over to watch the match later.
Make sure to tune in for the two-hour (yes, two-hour!) preview on ESPN starting at 1pm today. Of course, I wish Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise would stop by the studio for a few corny jokes (maybe sneezing while shouting "HOLLAND!?") followed by the goals of the tournament competition. But still - two hours or pre-match! Unthinkable a few years ago. Enjoy it, lads!
Good afternoon boys
I just noticed that the pre-game and Final are on both ESPN 2 and ABC simultaneously!!!
How about those Germans!!
Germany have now made the World Cup Final in SEVEN straight decades!!
1954
1966
1974
1982 and 1986
1990… that's bloody three in a row
2002
2014
From the BBC
Golden Boot chase
The Golden Boot - awarded to the tournament's top scorer - will also be decided tonight and Germany's Thomas Muller knows a goal will almost certainly secure the award.
A single strike would put him level with Colombia's James Rodriguez on six goals, but if it is a tie, with more assists, Muller would become the first player to win the honour at two successive World Cups.
Lionel Messi also has hope on four goals.
Hello chaps. Great post,UWS. Thank you, Bob. I have taken a break from household chores to watch the pre-match show.
ABC/ESPN Pre-game has started
Watching a team bus along the street
Correct, UWS. Mueller would win the tie breaker if he scores. Messi needs a hat-trick or two goals and two assists to become GBB. Toni Kroos tied for first with assists with Cuadrado of Colombia.
They say Di Maria will start
Settling in to watch the pre-match coverage on ABC now. Bob Ley, Lexi and Bollocks in the studio.
We are having an indoor picnic later in the afternoon since we all had a big breakfast.
I thought Solari would be in the studio since the Argies are in the final.
I think Di Maria would be a great signing for Man United.
The panel thinks they shouldn't start him
Matt made the point that LVG blew it in the semis starting De Jong and RVP and had to replace both of them…. and no subs for Krul at the end
My mistake. Solari is in the studio with TT , Gilberto, and Alejandro Moreno.
I agree with Matt on that point. LVG didn't use the subs as well as he should have.
I agree with the panel. I expect the Argies to play cautiously. It will be up to Germany to break them down.
We have a two hour pre game… BBC only has one
WHY OH WHY DID ESPN LOSE THE RIGHTS FOR 2018
I reckon the Germans will try to hit them quickly. That will help the match.
Maybe Fox will get a clue from this stuff and the NBC coverage of the Prem?
It should be like a home match for Germany as Brazil would hate to see their arch rivals win the World Cup in their own country.
Mario Kempes being interviewed by Julie Foudy now. He doesn't speak English? Foudy doesn't speak Spanish?
I sure hope so, Bob. The answer to UWS'S question is money.
WEll, they didn't do that well with the FA Cup !!
Well stated by Kempes, but the translator was probably off camera.
True, UWS. They have the rights to the next two World Cups.
They've got four years to sort it out, right?
Will anyone be eating Pasta Rizzoli during the match? Bob could feed that to his small gathering.
I don't think they get it.
What channels will they show it on?
A lot of the channel are still extra pay
AI know of ABC, but I am not aware of any other channels.
Any comments about the cost of postage overseas?
Tony will keep it forever!!!!
I was thinking about it. I was going to ask you how you feel about the Lancer Cup heading to Blighty.
Any special events planned for the World Cup in Glendale?
The usual US Soccer hagiography now. Video with Jeffry Wright narrating. Crikey!
No problems with the Lancer Cup. May the best man win. If Tony wins it, I'll bear the cost of sending it both ways. That's the responsibility that I took on when I started all of this nonsense. And it's worth every penny.
Here's a link for the BBC for their coverage starting at the top of the hour
http://livetvcafe.net/video/X6R47664W52Y/BBC-ONE
And the numpties like Lexi and TT criticizing Jurgen. They didn't exactly perform at the level Jurgen did. The U.S. would have been eliminated in the group stage if an American had been in charge. At least Casey Keller had the foresight to realize that.
Well stated , Bob. Does that mean Tony has already won it , LOL?
The Argies have arrived
So have the Germans
I am pleased to see the great Carlos Santana performing at the Maracana.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2690606/Leeds-United-players-forced-play-against-pre-season-friendly-Viitorul-Constanta-called-Romanian-fail-turn-up.html
Both sets of players want to get on the pitch…still all the closing ceremony crap sill on it
No - as UWS explained well in the intro to this thread, it all comes down to today's match - as it should! Chelskilad picked Germany to win this afternoon and UWS picked Argentina. They're both on 70 points at present.
Interesting wrinkle, though. UWS picked Messi for both Golden Boot and MVP, so Lionel scored, say, a hat-trick and the match ended a thrilling Germany 4-3 win (with Mueller scoring none of them) UWS would top his brother 86 to 80 points, as Chelskilad picked none of the supplementary categories.
Crikey - that's a ridiculous story about the LUFC. And that's just days after we beat an Italian semi-pro side 16-0!
YIKES! Bob will not be pleased. Leeds basically had a training session instead of some much needed match practice.
There hasn't been more than two goals in a World Cup Final since 1998 and more than three since 1986. Time for that to change!
Correct Bob.If Mueller doesn't score than Messi will be GBB if he scores a hat-trick or if he scores two goals and has two assists. An interesting scenario.
Looking at the World Cup wins
They do really well in years that end in 4 except 1994
Won it in 54, 74…14?
Klose became the first player to play in four World Cup semis , but the goal against Brazil was his first in any round past the quarters.
I think so. I expect Germany to win and that interesting pattern confirms it.
Before the 1990 Final…. EVERY Team had scored in a Final…but in 1994… NO team scored!!!
1998 Brazil failed to score
2002 Germany failed to score
200 each team scored but one was a pen
2010 Holland failed to score
NOT A GOOD TREND!!!
BBC's show starting… not liking the music!
Remember the 78 and 82 music well
DiMaria does not start…according to Matt and twitter
I am glad that they are showing the Rio that people don't see. It's about time that people realize that Rio has a high rate of poverty, crime, and pollution.
News
Germany v Argentina (20:00 BST)
Posted at 19:00
The teams are in - and both teams are unchanged from their semi-final wins over Brazil and the Netherlands.
Germany: Neuer, Howedes, Hummels, Khedira, Schweinsteiger, Ozil, Klose, Muller, Lahm (c), Kroos, Boateng
Argentina: Romero, Garay, Zabaleta, Biglia, Perez, Higuain, Messi (c), Mascherano, Demichelis, Rojo, Lavezzi
Do you think both teams will score. If the Germans can prevent Messi from controlling the match then I believe they can stop the Argies from scoring.
Germany trying to become World Champions for the very first time
WEST Germany won the last three!!
I had expected unchanged lineups.
True. That is a good point. I had not thought about that.
Glad to see the BBC presenters… for the whole tourney…they have been dressed down… I guess that is the style BUT for the Final they are all in suit and ties
Gary L, Alan S, Alan H and Rio
Alan Hansen making his Final appearance for the BBC
WOW! I would imagine the BEEB pre-match show is better than ABC's.Alan Hansen has been with the BEEB for many years. Do you know anything about his future plans?
no idea
I don't think that Argentina side is good enough to beat the Germans.
I agree with the ABC panel that if Germany score first then it will be a more open match because Argentina will have to chase the match.
I agree Bob. They will play very cautiously and hope to catch the Germans on the break. I hope it's not going to be like the 1990 Final.
Thanks for the link, mate. I'm watching it now.
HAHAHA
Beeb looking back at the tourney
Talking about Suarez
CHewy Louie!!
That sounds about right. It's strange seeing Germany in red and black hoops.
The BBBC?
BOOM BOOM. Nice Louie joke.
This is the third consecutive World Cup these teams are meeting. The last two were in the quarters with Germany winning on penalties in 2006 and it wasn't even KLOSE as the Germans won 4-0 last World Cup.
Germany coming out to warm up
They are wearing white shorts
So, are they all white or black with white
I think they will be all white
Argentina to change?
Becks now on the Beeb
Glad that there are no players banned from the Final because of cards
A smart decision by FIFA to erase them before the semi
A warm reception for the Germans and jeers for the Argentines.
I agree. It makes for a better final. I hope there is quality.
Loving the BBC coverage!!!
I will go on to that link.
Did you know that all but one of Klose's World Cup goals have come in the quarters or earlier. In matches played past the quarterfinal round he has one goal in six matches. I don't think that will hurt Germany today as they have plenty of other players that can score.
argentina have dark shorts and socks
Will they wear blue shirts
BBC showing the German line up wearing white
Half an hour to go gentlemen
Agreed, MUR - Germany have loads of weapons.
I am going to keep the BBC coverage during the match but hide the screen and mute it but will have it for half time and full time
Unfortunately, I could not get into the BBC sight. I think it's something with my computer
I saw Messi warming up in a white shirt. I hope both teams don't wear their change kit.
I am blogging alone. Elizabeth and the pets are napping . Jacquelyn is cleaning up her bedroom and the bathroom.
I think they will be in Blue shirts ala 90 Final
I have Tom and Matt here watching
I am sure Kathy will be here of KO
Sounds great . Other than the telly it's kind of quiet in our house.
The Match of the Day team have chosen the following six goals
Robin van Persie v Spain
Tim Cahill v Netherlands
Lionel Messi v Iran
Jermaine Jones v Portugal
James Rodriguez v Uruguay
David Luiz v Colombia
Andre Schurrle v Brazil
Your choice?
I wish one of the teams would wear their home kit. I don;t see why that isn't possible.
A tough choice. I'm going with J Rod vs Uruguay. I would pick Cahill as the runner up and Messi vs Iran in third place.
I think Germany are wearing their white shirts
I think they wear all white these days
Puyol brings out the WORLD CUP TROPHY IN A BOX
I heard that J Rod signed for Real. Did he or he or is he getting ready to?
BBC's line up shows the Argies in their reg shirts too
Not sure which colors are going to be worn
I would guess white for Germany and blue for Argnetina
They both won't be wearing their reg
Puyol could have at least had a trim before his presentation. He looks like a roadie for Spinal Tap!
Glad to hear that about Germany. I was hoping they wouldn't be wearing the red and black hoops.
Boys say not yet for J Rod
Talk of LVG wanting Hummels and Ruess to OT to play for the new Vanchester United
Nice on Bob
Hello Cleveland
Agreed Bob. Glad to hear that, UWS.
I'd have J Rod's against Uruguay. Classic volley.
86 Arg wore normal Germany wore green
90 Ger wore normal Arg wore blue
Nice one, UWS. The Vanchester United era starts tomorrow and will start their U.S. tour Friday. Those would be great signings. Did Di Maria already sign for United?
Is that a subliminal message, UWS?
I would pick J Rod's goal followed by Cahill's and then RVP
Teams in the tunnel
Argentina are wearing blue
I predicted that United's placing in the Prem this coming season would be the same as Holland's this World Cup? Does that sound reasonable?
The BBC link is slightly behind ESPN
We ll picked J Rod?
Matt said that Khdeira out after being injured in warm ups
As Gary Lineker once said: "A prediction; The final will be played by 22 men kicking a ball about for 90 minutes, and at the end the Germans will win."
UWS predicting a German win?
Classic by Garry
yes
Nice one, Lineker. Classic!
Here they come… passing the Cup… some of the Germans smiling at it
A mouth watering final ahead of us as Pasta Rizzoli leads out the officiating crew.
Great shot of the team with the Cup in front of them
Teams out on the pitch now. The World Cup gleaming in the foreground. Marvelous. Anthems now.
Argie fans boing somewhat… don't get the Germans mad!!!
The Trophy is in front of the players while the National Anthems are being played.
More than a hundred comments between the three of us and the match hasn't even started yet! Well done, everyone. Manuel get the trolley....
Sepp sitting way back… can't get a front row seat… along with the Chan of Germ
Brilliant BOYS
I agree, UWS. It will also stir up the local fans , who will be cheering for Germany. Poor conduct from the Argie fans.
I agree. well done LOBer and LVOBs.
Plonkers!!!
What time does it start…3… I will be three at 305
I would.
Matt is correct - Kramer in for Khedira.
Arsene Wenger won't be happy - he's in the process of signing Khedira.
Brazilian Prez gets to sit next to Blatter… she's having a rotten week!
Christoph Kramer of Borussia Monchengladbach replaces the injured Khedira. It will be only his fifth German cap.
Is that worse than having to watch Brazil play?
Wahay - A LUFC shout-out from ian!
Poor form by Elizabeth napping during the final.
Classic… Bond Villain!!
Leeds get a mention at the World Cup Final!!!
Well done Ian . Leeds representation in the final.
AWAY WE GO BOYS!!!
They're off from the Maracana.
And we're away in the 2014 World Cup Final!
There's a woman outside my window walking her dog. Doesn't she know the bloody World Cup Final is on!!
A great atmosphere at the Maracana, where Brazil did NOT play this tournament.
Well… your guest are in front of a tv either…. what kind of people do you hang out with!!!
Jurgi Loew is definitely the fitter of the two managers. Ian thinks he'd make a good Bond villain. No way - he's the sixth member of Duran Duran!
Poor form .Show her the red card.
BLOODY YANK!
Ozil nearly played Mueller in there with a clever flick.
Free kick chance for the Germans… that was a cynical foul
Agreed Bob. Definitely Duran Duran! Sabella heavier and much balder than during his spell in England. Had long , thick dark hair while playing in Yorkshire.
Rojo bundles over Mueller there - welcome to the match kind of challenge. Good range for the free kick. A committee of six or seven consulting.
Germany have a plenty of choices to take this
That was useless.. i think it was blocked by a German heal
Arg break… wide
In the end it's rubbish from Klose straight into the wall. And Lavezzi breaks and feeds Higuain. Cross shot that was nearly on target.
A training routine gone all wrong as Kroos shoots into the wall then on the counter , Lavezzi shoots across the face of the goal.
MUR - that sounds like a folk song: "I Lost My Long Dark Hair in Yorkshire."
Mueller had a chance for a cross there… failed to find someone
Oh - good move from the Germans. Mueller's ball in asked some questions.
And now Messi on the ball.
OH! Nice one twos as Ozil passed to Mueller down the right but he got it all wrong.
There is a good cut and thrust to this match already. Hope it continues.
Ref in the way and give the SAs a throw in
Some kind of disturbance in the crowd. Are they doing the bloody wave already!!?
I thought the crowd would be pro-Arg but they're mostly Brazilian and in the European camp
Mueller still playing wide teases a ball in that Romero picks out.
OH! Another cross by Mueller , straight into Romero's arms.
Germans with the heavy possession so far.
The crowd is definitely going to be pro German. They would not want their deadly rivals to win the WC in their country.
Oh - Messi skinned Hummels but then couldn't find the ball in to Higuain.
Great run by Messi… fails to find someone
Nice run.. Hummels outpaced by Mes
Messi skipped past Hummels but couldn't find anyone with the cross.
Looks like I would have fit into this German back four with my blistering change of pace.
It has been a great start to the match. More entertainment than the entire last WC Final.
Wear was someone to finish of Zab's pass
Oh - another great move from the Argies but the ball tantalizing ran across the box looking for someone to run on to it.
Another promising Argie attack, but Zaba fails to find anyone with the pass.
Both teams have started well
Howedes blocks a shot from Biglia for an Argie corner.
The corner is easily headed away.
Nice one, Bob. You and I would both fit into the German back four.
By now Germany had scored against Brazil.
Oh - lovely cross in from Lahm but Klose just was put off by DiMichaelis.
Great cross by Lahm and Klose couldn't connect. He should have given Germany the lead.
Masch fouls Klose just outside the box. Nit much in it.
Another free kick opportunity for the Germans. Will they do better by this one?
Kroos lobs it in and it's cleared.
The free kick from Kroos was headed away.
Another teasing cross in from the Pig Climber. Out for a corner. Good pressure from the Germans.
Useless corner
Di Michelis heads out a cross from former Bayern teammate, Pig Stick, for a cormer. Poor corner from Kroos is easily cleared.
The Argies are definitely trying to hit on the break with pace.
This final has had more action than the entire 1990 and 2010 finals combined!
Lahm finds Klose in the box again but he couldn't control him.
Agreed - long may it continue, MUR.
They definitely have the players to do it.
Kramer was knocked out there !
Oh - now Kramer is down with a head injury.
Herr Kramer is down injured.
TT is going to do his nut in the studio
He looks a little woozy but seems to be okay.
Scott Murray in the Guardian comments: "The corner, from the right, is hit in Muller's direction, but David Luiz doesn't play for Argentina and the striker, hoping to sidefoot home from the edge of the six-yard box, can't get a sniff as the Argentinians close ranks."
The Leeds old boy performing ball boy duties.
