Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Morning, UWS - thanks for posting the great image for this one. I'm back in the Cottage this morning looking forward to seeing these two.
Wow - excellent coverage by NBC SN, as usual. I'm watching the "Premiership Countdown" show with the Robbies commenting on the summer moves.
Liverpool just crushed Borussia Dortmund 4 nil on NBCSN
The Shield is on FS1. THey have already have had a Charity Shield history show and now the pre game
Morning BTW
Here's the team news for today's match:
Arsenal: Szczesny, Debuchy, Koscielny, Chambers, Gibbs, Arteta (c), Wilshere, Ramsey, Alexis, Cazorla, Sanogo Subs: Martinez, Monreal, Flamini, Campbell, Rosicky, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Giroud
Man City: Caballero, Clichy, Boyata, Nastasic, Kolarov, Navas, Fernando, Toure (c), Nasri, Jovetic, Dzeko Subs: TBC
Referee: Michael Oliver (Northumberland)
Thanks, mate - I wasn't sure. NBC were listing "Premiership Football" at 10am.
HUge rain and wind expected in England today. Part of Hurricane Bertha. Wonder if it is going to be at Wembley?
I know Old Trafford was expecting the wind and rain today and tomorrow! That's why how England won the Test Match yesterday was so remarkable. They got the final nine wickets in the last session of the day. They one inside three days with half of Day 2 halted by rain

Lots of seats available at Wemberley.
Hearts have take the lead at Ibrox against Rangers just before the hour mark
Hopefully not!!
Maybe it was an earlier shot or the weather has affected the travel
Nice goal by Sturridge against Dortmund.
I don't like the idea of NYC FC being owned by Man City. It is not good for the MLS either. City can just NYC as their reserve side or get some players loaned to them during the off season… i.e... Frank Lamps
Teams out of the tunnel
As you mentioned… lots of empty seats
Did you get that email with the return of Ted Lasso
No one replied to it
"God Save the Queen" now - none of the players singing it. None of them is English!!!
National anthem being played… are there actually any English players on the field field!!!
I did, mate. I'm going to post it on the LOB tomorrow just to get people pumped up for the Premiership season.
I suppose Wilshere is in the starting XI but I didn't see him singing the anthem.
No Englishmen in the City line up… that used to be an Arsenal trait… I don't 'like it
I hate the skin tight shirts…. don't fit fat people!
I don't like it either - I think the spine of the sides should be English - keeper, center back, playmaker, striker.
Don't like it either - slimfit shirts are a conspiracy against us.
Here go Fox… staying in the studio until kick off… TAKE SOME TIPS FROM NBC!!!!
We have to get 2xl
We're off
Hope it's a good one.
I'm in the red corner today
Nippy little skillful work from Alexis already.
Me too - hate Citeh.
GET THE BALL OVER!!!
Why has the the professional game changed that EVERY DAMN CORNER is aimed at the front post and EVERY DAMN CORNER never beats the first man… it stuns me! Why not aim for the big centerback's head
My sound is off… BLOODY FOX
My screen looks rubbish - are they forcing me to buy an HD tv? I will resist.
Citeh with a chance…blocked… should have done better… twice
BUY ONE
What Charity Shield was the last one to be contested between two clubs currently not in the Premier League?
Our era
This match is really congested and boring. Has there been a shot on target yet?
Like boring World CUp games
This game is game teams should go out and try and win!!
GOAL
Santi with a neat finish… One nil the Gooners
GOAL! Caz fires Arsenal into the lead!
Good finish but he wasn't closed down in the box.
Are you going to attempt my trivia question?
Gooner will be delighted with this start. Of the top teams, Citeh probably had the quietest summer transfer seasons of all. Are they resting on their laurels too much?
Another chance for Gunners… just wide.. hit the target man
Oh - Arsenal in full flow now and Sanogo pulls the trigger but is well wide.
Sanogo was nicknamed Sir No Goal by Arsenal fans last season. Will he come good now?
Not so far.. hit the target
Bobby Charlton had a great quote once
Don't aim… just hit the frame and let the goalkeeper worry about it
North of the Border news
Rangers were 1-0 down at home to Hearts but tied it up in the 91st minute BUT Hearts scored the winner in the 92nd!
One of the few teams that have a 'chance' of challenging Celtic for the title, Aberdeen, are losing at home to Dundee U
Citeh look completely devoid of ideas.
Are you just ignoring my question!!!!
Wolves take on Norwich at 11 o'clock
Arteta picks up the first yellow for chopping down Dzeko.
Sorry, mate - I missed it while I was making brekkies. Do you mean which Community Shield/Charity Shield match was contested during the Premiership era involving non-Prem sides or before the Premiership era involving First Division sides? Second Division sides?
Ipswich beat Fulham in the late kick off yesterday
Did you see that Mark Robbins stepped down as Huddersfield manager after losing 4-0 at home to Bournemouth… WHY? It's just one game and you've spent weeks preparing
Arsenal actually have two English players on the pitch - cor!
Dzeko really stripped Chambers for pace there - a real worry.
GOAL! Aaron Ramsey notches Arsenal's second and Gooner is dancing!
TWO NIL
RAMSEY… where was the defending???
No
When was the last Charity Shield match that was contested by two teams that are not presently in the Premier League. Could be any year but it was in our era
Sanogo did really well there with a great run and then holding up the ball and laying it on a plate for Ramsey. Could Sanogo be the replacement for RVP that Arsenal were missing last year? Will Giroud get a sniff?
Citeh were two up against United only to lose 3-2… will they do the same?
Fails to beat the front man… bloody useless
Arsenal breaks… Sanchez was too slow
Sanchez with a break again.. not too impressive
Terrible offside trap by Citeh
Oh - I get it. Not currently in the Prem. Well, the last title holder not currently in the Prem is Blackburn but they may have played a Cup winner in the Prem that next season.
Before that, it was Leeds, but they were probably playing also playing a Prem side. Before that it was, maybe Everton? Didn't they win the league in the 80s. Let's say Everton v. West Ham in say 1984.
Half time
Arsenal and Gooner must be very pleased
Now Bob has time to figure out my trivia question
Sanchez might have latched on to that and given Arsenal a 3-0 lead. Real problems for Citeh if they're going to play like that this season. Will they go out on a spending spree if they lose today?
Half-time. 2-0 Arse
I still don't think you get it
Everton are currently in the Premier League so it couldn't have been them
It would have to be Leeds (not in the Prem) vs Fulham (not in the Prem?
THe years you gave
Blackburn won the league and Everton won the Cup
Everton are still in the Prem
Leeds won the league and Liverpool won the Cup
Liverpool are still in the Prem
The Super Cup.. between the Champions League winners and the Europa League Winners… Real Madrid v Sevilla is in WALES!!
Didn't it used to be played in Monaco!!
Was it Leeds v. Fulham back in August 1992?
Look those red seats… every bloody half time
I thought they played those fancy dan matches in Japan or summit.
Nasri off and Silva on for the second half. No atmosphere in Wemberley today. Lots of empty seats about.
Second half underway
No
Leeds played Liverpool in 92
HOW ON EARTH WOULD THINK FULHAM WOULD EVER PLAY IN THE CHARITY SHIELD!!!
I dunno - I wasn't paying attention to footie in '92 apart from Leeds.
It was in our era
We were living there!!
Well, if you're really talking about our era, then, maybe it's when Ipswich won the Cup against Arsenal. Who might they have played in the Charity Shield? Dunno. Ipswich and Forest?
YOU GOT IT
1978
League Champs Forest vs Cup Winners Ipswich
Neither are presently in the Prem
Finally
Wahay! I'm not that thick after all.
What on earth are Citeh playing at in the back. And why do they have so many players injured right now? They haven't played in yonks!
No you're not
If you could actually have understood the question.. you would have gotten a lot earlier
Good save by Sussudio!
The ball was well out on the sideline in that move
Wake up linesman
LUFC Academy to come on. Along with some bloke I don't recognize from Argentina.
GOAL! Giroud with an absolute corker!
BAM!!!
Three nil
Giroud with a deflected shot over the keeper
Love seeing Citeh getting crushed
It was a good hit but Caballero looked weak on that. Should have probably got to it.
Joe Hart enjoyed that moment.
Arsenal fans enjoying a spot of The Poznan.
Arsenal fans doing the Poz
I'm sure Joe did
What does this mean for the season?
Nothing?
Did you see that Legia Warsaw have asked Celtic for a one game playoff game for the CL
I don't know - they've still got Aguero, Kompany and Zaba sitting in the stands, presumably to come back. Caballero has not looked impressive today. But I wouldn't be surprised if they bought one or two big names in the next couple of weeks.
I'm glad you mentioned that. Why were Celtic allowed back in to the CL playoffs. Did some side get disqualified?
Still goalless between Wolves and Norwich after 25 minutes
Wonder if that is on BEIN… of course… I don't have that channel anyway
Some sub they brought on in 86th minute of the second leg was suspended for three games from the previous season and the game should have been the third game
It became a forfeit and Celtic were awarded a 3-0 win.
So, after the first game ended 4-1 it ended up being 4-4 but Celtic won on away goals
This match has not fired me up.
My screen is back to normal now, though. It was all squiggly lines at first. No need for an HD telly after all.
Matt just informed me that this Charity Shield is the first one not including Man Utd or Chelsea
Arsenal won the double in 02 so they played runners up Liverpool
YES THERE IS
This one is ending with a whimper. Citeh aren't trying at all.
Goalscorer Ramsey coming off and World Cup hero for Costa Rica Joel Campbell coming on.
I am going to skip out on the last few minutes
Shower, shave and shopping
Talk to you next week
TTFN
Sinclair really took out Sussudio there. Ouch!
Cheerio, mate. This one is about done. Not sure what we've learned today from this. Citeh looked under strength. I cannot believe that they'll be this bad in the regular season.
Hello lads. I was on the road back from Dallas yesterday and watched the match today. I was certainly surprised by the result, but it was probably a combination of jet lag from the U.S. tour and an under strength Citeh side. I'm sure Citeh will be challenging fore the tile again this season.
