Europa League Thursday
I'm back in the office on Thursday afternoon to follow the second legs of the Europa League Round of 32. There's a lot on the line, including implications for our humble PPP game. I'll be watching Spurs' return fixture in Florence against Fiorentina today, as Everton seem well out of it with a 4-0 deficit to turn around. Join me for all the fun from 2:45 onward.

Good afternoon, Bob. I have Liverpool at Besiktas and Pool are one up on the night and two up on aggregate early in the second half.
Okay, lads - I've completely ballsed-up the timing on this one. I've just checked in with FS2G and found that the matches kicked off an hour ago and we're just starting the second half. Fortunately, Spurs and Fior are still at 0-0 (1-1 on agg), so I haven't missed a goal.
Hiya, MUR - welcome. Sorry about the mistake with the time. Not sure why they're kicking off early today.
Celtic and Inter are still locked at 0-0 (3-3 on agg) as well.
Now I have the PIP .on. It's 0-0 in Florence and 1-1 on agg early in the second half. The violas lead on away goals, so all to play for in that one.
How has your day been. I only worked half a day because Melanie has a doctor's appointment later this afternoon.
The starting XIs:
Fiorentina - Neto, Richards, Basalia, Savic, Alonso, Fernandez, Pizarro, Baddelj, Joaquin, Salah, SuperMario Gomez.
Spurs - Lloris, Chiriches, Fazio, Vertonghen, Davies, Lamela, Stambo, Bentaleb, Chadli, Eriksen, Soldado.
Both matches in Italy tied with the Italian side ahead on away goals.Liverpool ahead at the evil Slaven Bilic's Besiktas.
Had a fairly peaceful day, mate. Thanks.
Yes - both Celtic and Spurs need an away goal in order to progress.
Ben Davies will miss a prospective first leg Round of 16 match if Spurs progress with that yellow card.
GOAL - SuperMario puts Fior nearer to progress!
GOAL !!! FIORENTINA GO ONE UP AND 2-1 UP ON AGGREGATE.
Fazio was always trailing once Gomez was on to that through ball. Nice finish past Lloris.
1-0 (2-1 on agg)!
The Violas were gifted that goal as Fazio passed to Super Mario , who had the freedom of Florence and picked his spot past Lloris.
The Violas were gifted that goal as Fazio passed to Super Mario , who had the freedom of Florence and picked his spot past Lloris.
To be honest ,that goal doesn't really change anything. The Suds need a goal to avoid elimination as they did at 0-0/
A quick check on the PPP predictions:
Blue Devil - Sevilla
Chelskilad - Inter
MUR - Sevilla
Red Devil - Sevilla
Red Dragon - Fiorentina
Swansong - Spurs
UWS - Inter
WHR - Everton
Simon - Sevilla
Yellows - Spurs
Balo is down inured for Pool. It's a really hostile atmosphere in Istanbul.
We're looking good with Sevilla currently 2-3 up on aggregate.
Thanks for the update. One of the few sides I have left in the PPP.
You're right - Spurs still have the same brief. An away goal puts them back in the tie.
It's Harry Kane time! Not sure why the whiz kid didn't start the match. Is he really resting him for the Premiership?!
Oh - Lloris prevent Salah from adding a second goal for the Viola.
Why are the Spurs defenders so stretched out?
WOW !!!! Salah , the former Chelsea player , was walking like an Egyptian , as he was clean through and Lloris kept the Spuds in this tie as he saved at his feet.
Another give away , this time by Lamella as Joaquin found Salah , then Baddelj was through on the counter and shot well over.
Kane is being rested because the League Cup Final is in three days and I guess Pochettino felt two matches in three days would be a lot , especially as they're facing Chelsea.
As we watch, Dynamo Moscow and Zenit St. Petersburg are both into the last 16.
Liverpool, Sevilla, Kiev, Fiorentina, Inter, Ajax, and Villareal are all leading in their ties.
Thanks - that does make sense.
Two Russian clubs advanced earlier . Dinamo Moscow defeated Anderlecht 3-1 on the night and on agg while Zenit defeated PSV 3-0 and 4-0 on agg.
Time is running out for Spurs - they've got just over 20 minutes to turn this one around.
I have the Spuds match as the main match, but from what I am seeing of the match in Turkey, Pool are having little difficulty, absorbing the pressure.
GOAL !!! 2-0
WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN!!!! THIS ONE IS DONE AND DUSTED.
GOAL! That will put Spurs to the sword. Salah bursts through and scores Fiorentina's third. What was Vertonghen thinking there?
3-1 Viola!
Somewhere in a DC area travel agency there is some dark cackling going on.
Salah played a one two with Super Mario and Vertonghen was caught in possession in his box. Salah nicked the ball from him and blasted home from, a couple of yards out.
Salah of course picked up a yellow for taking his shirt off after the goal. What a nonsense!
GOAL !! BESIKTAS TIE IT UP AND ARE DOWN 2-1 ON AGG.
I'm turning over to the Liverpool match as Besiktas have leveled it - it's 1-1 now.
Looks like a chilly night in Istanbul and a very hostile atmosphere.
I believe it's still 1-1 on aggregate in Istanbul, mate.
Kyle walker is on for the culpable Vertonghen as The Spuds have a free kick just outside the box. Into the wall by Eriksen
Fifteen minutes left in this one - since there are no away goals, this one will go to extra time.
Pool are 2-1 up on agg and Besiktas still need two thanks to that away goal by Pool.
Looks like Besiktas are wearing a Germany kit.
There won't be extra time . Pool won 1-0 at Anfield and lead 2-1 on agg. Besiktas need two goals.
As far as I can tell, it's 1-0 Besiktas on the night, mate. Still only 1-1 and no away goals.
I was noticing that. I know the Germans had a lot of influence in the history of Turkish footie.,
Sorry. You are correct. It is 1-0 on the night.
Villareal have added a third goal and are cruising it on aggregate 1-5.
The Besiktas goal was a spectacular finish by Arslan with a shot in the upper 90 from the D off some nice one touch passing . Arsaln had a long range effort go inches wide about a minute before the goal.
It'll be a tense last ten minutes here in Istanbul. Headed for extra time perhaps.
Lallana is on for Balo.
No worries, mate.
Probably a good swap at this point, although Mario looks really arsed off about it.
More cackling from the travel agency as Harry Kane had a goal disallwoed for offside.
It is an extremely hostile atmosphere in Turkey
WAY HAY !!! Sevilla score at Monchengladbach to go 4-2 up on agg. Surely that one is done and dusted.
That should do us well into the next round - well done!
At least there is a track. Imagine how hostile it would be if the fans were on top of the pitch
Cheers. You can extend your lead and I can avoid a relegation playoff.
Demba Ba turns and shoots but well wide of the mark. I had no idea he was playing in Turkey now.
A conundrum as we have to decide whether to root for Pool or Evil Slaven's side. I'm going for Pool.
I think he went last summer as Jose decided he was not in his plans.
Celtic and Spurs are nearly done now.
Three minutes of stoppagfe time in Istanbul.
It's funny how you lose track of players. I had no idea Micah Richards was playing in Florence.
Arslan wins a corner off a superb solo run, going past four players!
OH!!! Demba Ba heads off the bar off the corner and that surely would have eliminated Pool. It was a shot off a flicked header as he bear Skrtel to the ball.
Inter score late vs Celtic to 4-3 up on agg. A brave effort by Celtic.
Kadlec drives a long range effort well over and the whistle blows as they head to extra time in Turkey.
Nearly curtains there for Liverpool. That would have effectively ended the British interest in this tournament.
That's it, then - on to extra time.
It's over in Florence as the Violas win 2-0 and defeat the Spuds 3-1 on agg, to the delight of the Gooner and Simon.
I'm over to the Fiorentina v. Spurs link now to see the Viola celebrating their win.
I didn't know that Micah Richards moved to Fiorentina. Thanks , mate.
I'm working the Fox Soccer 2 Go links now as I turn over to see Inter progress 4-3 on aggregate after a late goal. Celtic are out!
ET is underway in Istanbul.
Looks like Liverpool are playing for penalties now.
I think the pick of the late matches is Feyenoord vs Roma, on FS2. The Dutch side drew 1-1 in Rome last week.
They could be. I think Pool have enough quality to defeat these mugs.
Opare shoots just wide, but it looked like Mignolet had that covered.
A tough schedule for Pool, who play Citeh in a noon kickoff on Sunday, which is in less than 72 hours. The Europa League provides a tough schedule.
Everton are about to kick off in their home leg against Young Boys of Bern. They start at three goals down but at least an away goal advantage.
It certainly does; I think a number of sides consider it a nuisance.
Demba Ba is well offside a s Pool were nearly caught off by some nic one touch passing then a great save by Mignolet from Demba Ba then hoofed away by Skrtel , who was about to put in his own goal.
Tore has a deflected effort saved by Mignolet off a run and pass from Demba Ba.
Ba pulled a good save out of Mignolet.
Emre Can appears to have twisted his ankle. The last thnig Pool needs.
Emre Can back on and booked for diving.
Sturridge is found out wide left but he looks really off the pace.
A minute of stoppage time.
In the late kickoffs, Club Brugge have a 3-1 aggregate advantage and a home leg and Bilbao and Torino are at 2-2, Bilbao with the away goals advantage.
It's HT of ET with the tie still in the balance.
Evil Slaven makes a substitution. I think he's bringing on an extra forward.
Rickie Lambert is on for the off the pace Sturridge as the second half of ET is underway
Tore down off a hard challenge by Loveren. The ref says it's a fair tackle.
Opare brings down Sterling just outside the box.
That first half of extra time didn't sort out anything.
Good free kick opportunity now - Liverpool must not waste it.
Attiba Hutchinson heads away the free kick from Lallana then an atrocious cross from Loveren is out of play.
What a waste.
Brugge have added another goal to their aggregate score.
FS 1 is sticking with a Mersey theme today. Once this match is over, they will show the match from Goodison Park.
Fifteen minutes in and Everton have not got the early goal that they needed.
Young Boys take the lead at Goodison and are now down 4-2 on agg. They still need three goals to advance.
This one is clearly the better match as I don't think the Toffees have any chance of reducing that deficit.
Tore wins a corner off of Toure . Skrtel heads away the corner from Tore.
The Toffees are the ones up on agg.
My apologies - I've just noticed and remembered that Everton are in fact 4-1 up against Young Boys after that hat-trick by the Chunk. They should easily be able to see that one through.
Demba Ba was through , but blasts miles over.
Ba shoots well over the bar - poor from him.
I think they should. At least one Prem side will make it to the next round.
Olympiakos take the lead vs Dnipro and now are down 2-1 on agg. Torino take the lead in Bilbao and now lead 3-2 on agg. Bruge take the lead vs Alborg and now lead 4-1 on agg.
A wasted free kick from Can is cleared by Opare , the first man.
Napoli take the lead vs Trabzonspor to go 5-0 ahead on agg.
No Stoppage time and this one will need to be settled on penalties.
Sorry, mate - I just had a call from my brother that my Aunt Ran - my mom's older sister - just passed away this afternoon. So, we were on the phone for a bit.
It's another penalty shoot-out for Liverpool in Istanbul.
I'm very sorry. I met her last summer and really enjoyed her company My condolences to you and your family.
The Chunk ties it p for the Toffees, who are now 5-2 up on agg. His fourth of this tie.,
The shootout begins.
1-0 bbESIKTAS AS dEMBA sends Mignolet the wrong way with his stutter step
1-1 .
Rickie Lambert with a great penalty in the upper 90.
2-1 Besiktas as Gkhan Tore, the former Chelsea trainee shoots in the upper 90.
Desmond as Lallana sends the keeper the wrong way with a powerful penalty.
3-2 Besiktas as Kadlec drives the penalty in the roof of the net.
3-3 as Emre Can scores with a well placed penalty.
4-3 Besiktas as Attiba Hutchinson, the Canuck , blasts it in the upper 90.
4-4 as Little Joe Allen sends the keeper the wrong way with a penalty in the upper 90.
5-4 Besiktas as Arsalan blasts it in the corner.
It's high and wide by Loveren as Besiktas advance wining the shootout 5-4.
Pool will quickly need t recover as they host Citeh in a big match in less than 72 hours.
Off to Goodison as the Chunk scored another . He's on another hat-trick as he's scored five against these Young Boys.
Nearly another for the Toffees as Barkley won the ball and passed to the Chunk , who put through Mirallis and the keeper did well to turn around his effort.
The Chunk's first goal was a penalty as the keeper brought down Naimsmith. The second was a volley off a cross by the reserve left back.
GOAL !!!! 3-1 TOFFEES. tHEY WON THE BALL DEPP IN THEIR OWN HALF, THEN GIBSON TWISTED AND TUREND AND FOUND MIRALLIS , WHO BEAT THE OFFSIDE TRAP AND DRIBBLED 40 YARDS BEFORE STROKING IT PAST THE HAPLESS KEEPER. nOW 3-1 AND 7-2 ON AGG.
They Young Boys defended like um well um .. Oh yeah like Young Boys
The Toffees should coast through the second half as they have a tough one at the EM on Sunday
It's halftime at Goodison . The Toffees lead 3-1 on the night and 7-2 on agg.
That's it for me. I will be around Saturday. Cheers!
Thanks for keeping us going yesterday afternoon, mate - I'll look forward to chatting with you tomorrow morning.
