Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!
225 Comments:
It's 0-0 three and a half minutes in.
OH! Burnley should have taken the lead. George Boyd nicked the ball off of Ryan Mason and Danny Ings shot straight at Worm. Doesn't he know that the early bird catches the worm, or something like that.
A minute of stoppage time as Worm did well to tip over an effort from Danny Ings.
Now Kyle Walker is down injured in injury time.
He hobbles off, but seemed to pull a muscle from an outstretched challenge.
It's 0-0 at the half. It was not exactly a classic. Tom Heaton saved two comfortable long range efforts while Danny Ings should have scored in the fifth minute for Burnley and had a decent effort tipped over at the beginning of stoppage time./
Morning, MUR - I had a late night and a Sunday lie-in with the missus, so I'm joining you late. Good to chat with you again.
I'll be very torn watching the Spuds from here on in this season, as I want to see young Harry Kane ripping it up for England's sake but not too, too much for my PPP's sake.
Back on for the second half and Kyle Walker seems to be gimping about. Why risk him?
The commentator is hoping for a better second half, so according to him and your comments, I made the right decision.
And now Kyle Walker has fallen over - what a nonsense!
The second half kicked off about two minutes ago and Kyle Walker hobbles off injured again. The announcers question why he started if he is not completely fit.
Turf Moor is looking loverly this April afternoon. We're meanwhile having yet another snowstorm.
Good morning Bob. You made the correct decision to have a wee bit of extra kip.
Yikes! April snow. It is lovely in Blighty today. Overcast , but mild this morning in South Texas.
A big penalty shout there against Mason, but his hand was down at his sides - no dice.
The best chance was in the fifth minute when Danny Ings shot straight at Worm with just him to beat.
Harry Kane has had very little service because most of the first half was played in the Spuds half. Hard to blame him.
Nice tackle by Trippier on Kane , who went on a run. The most we've seen of him the entire match
A wee bit naughty by George Boyd on Bentaleb
George Boyd seemed to lunge in on Bentaleb there 0- no card, somehow.
I think Chricies came on for the crocked Kyle walker, who should not have even started.
A fairly monotonous chant going on among the home faithful now - really irritating.
I don't think there have been any cards yet. There should be next match.
Agreed. I think they're bored too. They should be enjoying the rare nice weather this time of the year in these parts.
Now there's a clash of heads - brutal match, here.
Eric Dier is down after catching Sam Vokes got caught in the back of the head with his elbow. Is Vokes a headache?
It wasn't in the first half.
Danny Ings with a wild slash of a cross that drifted toward the Spurs goal - tipped over.
Worm tips over a miss hit cross from Danny Ings
Danny Rose clears a poor Burnley corner.
Well, since I've been watching there has very little football and a lot of thrashing about. I know that Burnley are desperate for points but this is ridiculous.
Danny Rose flops down, looking for a penalty. Surely, he didn't learn it just down the road at ER!
Spurs have a chance to leapfrog Liverpool into 5th today with losses from Pool and Soton yesterday. If they don't win today, you'd have to consider the top four spots basically locked up, as Citeh would have seven more points and a chance to make it 10.
There was plenty of that in the first half, but there are more tackles this half. The first half was both teams coughing up possession
I agree. I think Pool, Sotton , and the Spuds are fighting fir the two EL spots. What a prize!
That's not the LUFC way - Danny learned that from the Spuds.
Harry Kane now gimping about - I wonder how many Spuds players will survive this match.
Lamella coming on for Chadli, sporting a ridiculous barnet.
At the other end, it's six teams fighting to avoid the three relegation spots. A Burnley win moves them out of the drop zone and moves Fred's team. Burnley would be fifth from bottom ahead of Villa on goals scored or goal difference. Then the Black need to win the Tyne-Wear Derby to move back out
Great tackle by Scott, the Scot, Arfield on Eriksen on the break.
Sorry mate. I was giving you a little stick. I agree.
If you want to put things in financial perspective, the Spuds spent more on Lamella than Burnley have on every transfer combined in their entire history. To think he's only a sub today or is it a sign of how foolishly they have managed their finances?
The first booking of the match as Trippier is booked for a trip on Danny Rose. In case you are wondering , Citeh Academy fouled LUFC Academy , so Bob will be pleased with that decision.
If this match ends in a draw then Burnley move up to third from bottom, behind the Black Cats on gd, pending the result of the next match. The Spuds would leapfrog the Saints into sixth and would be behind Liverpool on gd.
No worries, mate - I was just making some oatmeal for a cold morning. Ridiculous in April, I know.
Trippier has a shot skim of the top of the net that fooled Worm. I think that was meant as a cross.
I agree. Hopefully that will end sooner rather than later. I think that will be the case.
I keep wondering how Spurs keep on spending money year after year on players and never quite win anything.
A substitution that will please Bob as Lukas Jutkiewicz is on for Sam Vokes.
Another booking as Ben Mee is booked for a foul on Lamella. Both Burnley bookings are from former Citeh Academy players. What exactly happened when Roberto Mancini was in charge?
Yes, indeed, no loves for Sam given his less than stellar time at Leeds.
Given this performance, I'd prefer to see Burnley go down rather than Sunderland or even QPR.
I am thing of a Frank Sinatra song. It's called " That's Granda."
I would like Burnley to stay up. I admire them for being competitive with a squad that's less talented than some Championship squads.Sean Dyche doesn't have thew funds to spend on talented players and the Spuds are partially to blame for the poor match
England goalscoring hero Andros Townsend coming on to replace Ryan Mason.
Mike Malarkey, which this match has been, raises his flag for offside.
Ryan Mason sure lived up to his name today.
Surely you mean, "That's Life," no?
I would yank Paulinho. He's been absolute pants today.
Do you mean that Mason was laying bricks today?
It could be . I'm thinking that because Real thrashed Granada 9-1 earlier today with Skippy netting five of those goals.
Wow - Skippy continues to impress. Any chance of getting him back at OT?
Yes. He sure played like that. I guess he was industrious.
I'm not sure. I guess if we can get rid of Di Maria and/or Valencia that would make room for him. Is he even interested in a return?
Eriksen is trying to liven things up but Cirices somehow contrived to hit the defender with his cross. And then Bentaleb has lashed the outswinging corner over the bar.
Despite that huge Real win, they are second , one point behind Barca, who play at Celta Vigo this afternoon.
BLOW UP REF!
Three minutes of stoppage time as George Boyd heads wide off a long throw.
Indeed - this is probably the worst match I've seen all year. Hoping for better out of the Northeast Derby.
I agree. For some reason, Fred has a craving for magpie stew.
I'll bet he is.
This match is put out of it's misery as it finishes 0-0.
And that's that - Burnley will be the happier of the two, with Sean Dyche's lads picking up a valuable point. They're level with Sunderland, albeit with the Black Cats coming up next.
The line-ups for the Tyne and Weir Derby:
Black Cats - Pants, Jones, Vergini, O'Shea, Van Aan, Sebby Larsson, Clattermole, Gomez, Fletch, Defoe, Connor Bloody Wickham. Subs: Bridcutt, Johnson, Reveilla, Graham, Coates, Mannone, Buckley.
Magpies - Krul to Be Kind, Taylor, Janmaat, Williamson, Gutierrez, Colback, Sissoko, Gouffran, Cabella, Ameobi, Perez. Subs - Anita, Eliot, Overran, Riviere, Abeid, Armstrong, Kemen.
Gooner's comment about the earlier match:
"I've been more entertained watching the dogs walk back from the dog park. This was utter rubbish but that didn't stop the commentary team from non-stop fellatio for Harry Kane."
I'm back from walkies with Sparky just in time for the Tyne-wear Derby
LOL to both Bob and the Gooner.I completely agree with the Gooner.
All set for what promises to be a blood and thunder derby. Bright sunshine as Sunderland kick us off.
They're off from the sunny SOL.
Bright start from the home side - winning an early corner.
Krul punches out and Newcastle survive the first assault.
An early corner for the Black Cats. Tim Krul gets ahead of the gang as he punches away a corner from Seb Larsson.
Cracking atmosphere at the SoL; Colback will be booed throughout.
Fred says that the new manager advocates victory.
Krul makes a hash of that clearance but Sunderland can't capitalize right away. Frantic start to this one.
Newcastle are essentially safe at this point on 35 points - not a lot to play for apart from regional pride.
Agreed. He's considered a villain on Tyneside.
As Bob stated, plenty of boos for Colback for making what is considered a forbidden move in these parts.
Ayoze went down heavily under that challenge. Could easily have been an early pen for Newcastle.
Quick break for Sunderland through Defoe who spread to Gomez. Good tracking back.
I thought the ref made the right call as that would have been harsh, considering tackles are flying about in this type of derby. Well done, ref.
I agree. Now it's Guttierez blocking nearly off the line there as Defoe was lurking.
Billy Jones has a volley cleared off the line from a Seb Larsson corner. The next corner is from Jordi Gomez and is ehaded away by the first man
More action in this first five minutes than in the entire 90 at Turf Moor, I suspect.
Fred is in hiding.
Yes you are correct.
Not the best of free kicks from Jordi Gomez that is easily saved at the near post by Tim Krul.
He's not watching his beloved Black Cats?
Gouffran clipped Wickham as he was running by his path.
Naughty by Cabella on Whickham. Bob may have enjoyed that
He's not. I think he's napping.
Didn't he get enough of a nap during the first match?
He's awake. Elizabeth is heading back to her parents after the match and Fred is inspecting the luggage.
BOOM BOOM! After brekkies for sure.
A moment's applause by both sets of fans. Classy!
Probably the only classy move from the supporters today.
Steven Fletcher wins a corner after a cheeky back heel from Wkickham
Whickham heads wide at the far post off a corner from Seb Larsson. He seemed surprised that the ball made it his way.
It may be. It's a derby , so you never know.
The Wee Neviller making excuses for Connor Bloody Wickham.
Whickham wins the Black Cats' fifth corner.
The corner from Gomez is headed out for a throw near the corner flag.
I'm sure you are a little irked at the Wee Neviller.
Fred is still checking the luggage. While the Black Cats have had 73% of the possession, Fred has had similar possession of the luggage. Both stats are meaningless.
More than a little.
Does that mean that Fred never gets to go on a trip?
What did you think of that goal from Charlie Adam.
Marvelous! One of the goals of the season for sure.
Fred hates trips. He hates the motion of a car. I think he's trying to be a nuisance.
Mad scramble in the Newcastle box now. Sunderland have had more possession, as you mention, but few real chances.
OH MY GIDDY AUNT! It's short sleeve shirt weather in Newcastle. It's sunny , 64 degrees , and near calm winds. One goes to the land of the Geordies to find warm weather?
Fred has been more of a nuisance than Jermaine Defoe.Shouldn't he be back in Toronto or was he transferred?
Oh - Defoe was nearly in there but his touch let him down and it was cleared.
OH!!! Defoe was through, but poor control led to a clearance for another Sunderland corner.
I think so; he was doing well at Toronto with service from Michael Bradley. He's doing nowt at Sunderland.
An object was thrown at Colback. The fact that he moved to the enemy is not a valid excuse for throwing something at him.
Vergini is going to be the first player into the book. Sunderland has the worst record in the Prem in respect to cards.
Vergini is the first player booked as he tugged Ayoze's shirt.
I agree - I had a feeling that there would be little classiness among the fans today.
Burnley have the best record, so they may be in the EL as a Fair Play team.
Wickham tried a shot from an absurd angle that Pants just gratefully grabbed at the near post. Should have pulled it back to a teammate.
And now it's Ryan Taylor into the book. Tit for tat.
Ryan Taylor is booked for a lunge on Seb Larsson. Tackling is not his forte.
A poor free kick from Gomez is headed out by the first man then a shot from Cattermole is blocked then a foul ends all that
Nearly half time at SoL now - I've officially goal starved.
Poor ball there from Wickham as he got through.
A bloody useless pass from Whickham as Bob will be more than willing to mention.
Sunderland get a fortunate free kick - Jonas really won the ball there.
You will be better off having lunch than expecting a goal to end your hunger.
We're looking at a match and a half without a goal.
GOAL! Defoe with a goal out of nothing!
A minUte of stoppage time and
GOAL !!!! WHAT A GOAL BY DEFOE. WELL WORTH THE WAIT.
Fletcher did well to nod the ball on and Defoe hit the volley as sweetly as you'll ever see.
1-0!
A long cross was headed on by Connor Whickham and Defoe shot a rocket in the upper 90
And that's half-time - I'm off for a shower.
That was the last kick of the half as the Black Cats are one up. A win would be priceless for the Black Cats.
My apologies to Bob. A long free kick from Pantilimon was headed on by Steven Fletcher, not Whickham and Defoe scored that cracker six seconds into stoppage time.
A win for the Black Cats would move them three points above the drop zone and they would move ahead of Hull City and Villa as well.
The second half is underway
OH!!! The Black Cats should have gone two up. Jordi Gomez nicked the ball off of Janmaat then played a one two with Defoe. Then his cross was volleyed into the ground by Steven Fletcher and tamely to Krul as he was unmarked. Dick Advocate was furious.
That goal by Defoe was the first by Sunderland in six hours and nine minutes at the SOL. The Black Cats were long overdue.
Back from a refreshing shower; I'm curious to see what response if any the Magpies have to that spectacular Defoe goal.
Connor whickham took too bloody long to get up to the box to receive a pass from Steven Fletcher. He would have been in for a tap in.
The Black Cats win a corner.
Welcome back, mate. No response from the Magpies. They've been a real shower while you were in the shower.
More wastefulness from Wickham - not quite sure what that was. His tattoos say that he's a big time Charlie but that shot cum cross says he's destined to a life in the Championship and L1.
I saw that it's a full schedule in the Sky Bet Championship tomorrow. Unfortunately, I have to work tomorrow. How about you?
Jonas looks as if he's going to come off - will the Magpies throw caution at the wind?
Quite right . He's been bloody useless.
Fairly innocuous cross there by Ameobi but they get a throw out of it. Riviera to come on - attacking move.
No. It's a French swap as Riviere is on for Gouffran. Like for like.
I guess it is more attacking. The Magpies need something. They really need to carve out a victory.
Ayoze Perez has been quieter than usual today - I quite like the look of him but he hasn't been in this one. Intimidated by the atmosphere of the derby perhaps?
I'm looking at the schedule and the MOTD tomorrow seems to be the early one : watford vs Middlesbrough. It's first vs second. I can be around for the first half of that.
That Defoe goal has launched Sunderland all the way up to 15th ahead of both Hull and Villa who are now going to be looking anxiously over their shoulder.
He hasn't had much support today
Correct and Sunderland are three points above the drop zone. Villa host QPR in a six pointer on Tuesday
Jordi Gomez picks up a needless yellow for scrapping around the Newcastle area - Janmaat the victim.
The most popular yellow card of the afternoon - for Jack Colback.
Jack Colback is booked as Toon fans finally have a reason to cheer.
On this evidence, Dick Advocaat should have enough nous to keep the Black Cats in this division.
If Connor Whickham doesn't show immediate improvement then his manager will advocate a move away from the SOL. He could end up in the Championship. He has a decent record at that level.
I would think so. I checked Hull City's schedule at the half. Other than Palace and Burnley, it's all top half teams the remainder of the season. Surely, they are one of the favorites for the drop.
Van Aanholt booked for a foul on Ryan Taylor. Bob will be pleased as the Dutchman scored the goal that knocked Leeds out of the cup.
Nice one, mate - boom boom!
I agree with you - Brucey and co. are in real trouble. If he can engineer safety for the Tigers, he'll really have earned his corn this season.
Cheers mate. I thought you would get a chuckle out of that.
Van Aanholt slices a shot wide off a pass from Defoe. I bet Bob wishes he had done the same vs Leeds.
Now whickham misses a sitter as it's another nice pass from Defoe. He took too bloody long to shoot then when he was surronded by defenders he shot high and wide.
I think BEIN has a triple header of Championship matches tomorrow. Wolves vs Leeds is the finale.
Sissoko with a foul on Gomez about half the distance from where Charlie Adam scored.
Sebby Larsson with a decent effort there from the free kick.
Nearly 2-0. A curling free kick from Seb Larsson was about a yard or two wide.
Yep - all early ones. Unfortunately, I'm at work but I'm going to try to dial in from there.
Did you see that BEIN will have a busy Championship day tomorrow?
I just saw that you answered that. I can chat with you the first half of the first match. The second half of the Leeds match is a maybe.
Speaking of run-ins, Villa still have Spurs away, Citeh away, Everton, West Ham and Soton.
The key fixtures are likely to be Tuesdays clash with QPR and the end of the season clash with Burnley on 24 May. It may all go down to that one.
I've got a 10 am meeting that will likely go to 11. Other than that, it's a holiday for students so it should be pretty quiet.
Pants does well to push away a shot from the French Riviera.
Unfortunately, I have to work all day tomorrow.
Defoe comes off to a hero's ovation. His goal may be vital to Sunderland staying in the Premiership. Adam Johnson, the forgotten man, on in his stead.
Adam the pervert Johnson on for Defoe, who gets a deserved standing ovation.
Another key one will be Burnley vs Hull City. Burnley may do just enough to stay up if they can win their six pointers.
Seb Larsson is booked for pulling back the French Riviera. it's too early to think about holidays.
Absolutely -there are some real relegation dogfights to come that might well be more entertaining than the top of the table clashes, given how locked up the table is at the top.
Not sure what that geezer in the crowd is up to running back and forth.
Decent hold up play from Wickham - praise where praise is due.
Oh - Sebby was right in there in the dangerous area but Williamson got the vital block off.
OH!!! Seb Larsson had a shot deflected for a corner by Williamson after nice work by Van Aanholt. They just can't seem to get that second goal.
