Alexis Sanchez makes the bench, still resting from that Chile win in the Copa America.
West Ham give a start to 18 year old Reese Oxford, an academy prospect who is being described as a "young Rio Ferdinand."
In the tunnel.
Morning Robert
I was going to make a post but thought I would see if the Commish was going to do it
Day 2 of Week 1
I think Arsenal are good team and have a shot at the title but I don't think they have improved that much except for the keeper. I know Cech is good but did their old keepers lose them many points?
Last year, driving back from one of Tom's games, United had just won at the Em and all the talk was of Wenger Out! Has it changed so much? Didn't your brother want a change?
Wq are off at the Em
All set to go, then. Arlo White and professional Gooner Lee Dixon on the microphone today. Great atmosphere.
Morning, David - great to have you around for this one. What do you think - Arsenal as title contenders?
I just commented on my thoughts
Will Dixon be a a real pro Arse
That was a dangerous move by the Hammers...the cross almost perfect.
Corner to the Bubble Men
Did you see Jose complaining about his medical staff being naive as they ran on the field to tend Hazzard. That meant he had to go off and the Blues had to play with 9 men. He said Hazzard was just tired.... I say he was just wasting time
West Ham wearing 70s style away kit. I like it
A quick second yellow for a Hammers player
Ozil off the top of the wall... corner
I did see that weird Jose comment. I suppose it was a catastrophic opening day for them, dropping two point and losing Courtois to a red card and one match suspension and Hazard to a knock. They've got Citeh next weekend. He's a big whiner.
Dixon is ridiculously partisan - he says that The Ox had "great technique" but he ballooned his volley well over the bar.
I repeat Mike's comments from yesterday
As to your comments, I was never sold by Szesney as a keeper. Arsenal have leaked a lot of goals from set pieces in the last few seasons. That was always their soft core when they had those fabled Tuesday night away days to Stoke or Blackburn. Cech will give the back four a lot of confidence. I think he wins them 10 points on his own.
No comment on my Arsenal comment?
The Hammers aren't doing that bad
Oh - that was dangerous. Poyet does so well to keep the ball in down the left and fires in a great cross. Snuffed out by Mert and Cech.
Fair point
I just don't think they have improved that much
Of course, Chelsea haven't... so they have a shot
I picked United but LVG doesn't have them playing with any swagger... I hate it
Just did - I think you're right that on paper they haven't improved much, but I'm not sure that any of the top teams have improved a lot yet. Unless there are some big signings to come.....
Not sure that United's new boys are that much of an improvement from last year. Is Schweinsteiger really better than, say, Daley Blind? Or is Depay really that better than Herrera or that Japanese bloke?
Free kick Arsenal....
Well cleared out. West Ham are doing well, as you say.
My Champions pick, Boro, only draws at Deepdale
The home crowd groaning already, at Monreal this time.
Southampton take the lead at SJP
I saw that - they're my title pick as well.
Soton have scored through Pelle at SJP.
Not a good start for the Magpies.
Great run by The Ox and then a cross deep to Caz who volleys over.
At the half hour mark, West Ham have set out their stall quite well. Not that many chances for the Arse. Of course Dixon thinks they'll "get better and better as the game goes on."
Oh - Ramsey has a shot deflected toward goal and a combination of Adrian and the bar kept it out.
Nice run by a Hammer but too many defenders
Arsenal are getting more shots off than United did and moving the ball much faster.... still not being that dangerous though
Lee Dixon thinks that today's players are a bunch of poofs.
Payet with a shot deflected... I think he could have passed it
I agree with Lee for once
Yeah - but United were 1-0 up by this point. I think Gooners would take that.
Set play for the corner but the guy muffed the shot
Monreal draws a foul and a yellow card for Tomkins. WH racking up the cautions at this point.
Without taking a shot btw
No one said anything about Rooney with that goal
The ball was at the six and he was wide open. He tried to control it and NEVER got a shot off!!!
Ramsey has a go from distance but it's well wide. Worth a go, I suppose but I'm not sure that Debuchy thought so.
Rooney knew that Kyle Walker would help him out?
Giroud caught offside there as Ramsey chested it toward him.
I don't think anything was was wrong with a shot... Debuchy's cross would have been pants anyway!
Rooney is crap
GOAL... the Hammers take the lead!!
Johnno and the Mendittos are jumping up and down!!!
Newcastle tie it up at the same time!!
GOAL! What a time for the Hammers to score. I said earlier that Arsenal would be stronger from set pieces, but it didn't look like it there. Too easy.
Kouyate with a free header.
0-1 Hammers.
Was it a mistake by Cech?
That 1-0 win over Spurs is looking better and better.
I think so - if the keeper is going to come, he's got to get there. He was in no man's land.
Loving this weekend!
United play crappy against a top five club and get three points
Chelsea and Arsenal play against lower teams and drop points
COME ON YOU POTTERS AND BAGGIES!
I still think the Gunners are going to win this comfortably
Exactly - it's got to be advantage United at this point.
Half time
0-1 to the Hammers
The BBC says it was a sucker punch by the Hammers. I don't' think the Hammers were being that much outplayed
There is too much analysis by too many people these days
Their thoughts of good play is way off too
Too much things are thought to be good these days even though NOTHING comes of it
Too much coverage and too much punditry.
Cloughie was right way back when at the 3 minute mark
Shuuut up and show the football
LIke his thoughts on being the Champion of the country
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqAZsoF-ghw
Just watched the video again... Cloughie was spot on
I have switched over to Matt's old laptop and sitting on the couch... hope it works
Really annoying windows on this Windows computer
Dixon complaining again
The Toon have come all the way back and now lead the Saints 2-1
Bloody hell - I've just come back to see that Petr Cech has made another error and Arsenal are 0-2 down!
What a nightmare start for the big Czech Republic keeper.
West Ham are two up!!
Cech beaten at the front post!!
I was watching the match not realizing my video wasn't live and I get a update on my phone saying 2-0!
A big hole for the Arse to dig themselves out of now.
Another Arsenal attack breaks down - I'm sure that Gooner is really frustrated by this lot. This is the kind of match that keeps him off the blog. He's got too thin a skin about it.
I see them getting at least a draw no matter when they score their first
Goalscorer Zarate comes comes off.
This laptop is annoying but it is more comfortable to sit on couch!
Well, they've got to get on their bikes about it.
The Hammers have another break... should have done better
The hour mark has come and gone. Time to freshen things up for the Arse, I suspect.
Can't you see even if they score in the 87th minute they could still score again
Sanchez to come on?
Johnno is crowing about this on FB; I've told him that he should be on the LOB.
I suspect it'll be Theo first. If Alexis comes on, you know that Arsene is desperate.
Yeah - I could see that, but they look like the Arsenal of old with all of the frustrating tippy tappy around the box to no purpose.
Yeah - I could see that, but they look like the Arsenal of old with all of the frustrating tippy tappy around the box to no purpose.
Free kick chance for the Arse but straight into the keeper's arm
You're right - it is Alexis. Wow!
Hammers fans singing... We're going to win the league
LOL! It's good to be optimistic.
Steve must be having kittens right now
Here comes Sanchez for a fullback
Don't want him to be a hero...speaking as a United fan
Dixon with a good line about being a right back... a glory position
Decent ball in from the corner; Hammers clear it out.
Alexis tries a curler but it's cleared out.
Uh oh - clash of heads. Looks bad for Giroud and a Hammers defender. Not good.
Slavan Bilic looks concerned.
I think that Cech should be saving that, on the replay.
I think that Cech should be saving that, on the replay.
Giroud is on his feet again but Tomkins looks the worse for wear.
Looks like Nolan is coming on; what about a replacement for Giroud?
Both are back on - that's madness. Both of them could be concussed.
Reese Oxford coming off to some whistles and applause.
Arlos talking about allowing a sub to be put on and taken off for them to do tests
Not a bad idea but it would be abused. Just like teams kicking the ball out when someone went down. A player would be out of position so they would go down
Both players back on
Sakho runs on to a long ball out but Cech closes down the angles
I agree with you - sounds too complicated.
still time for the Gunners
Damn it... I was behind again!! You knew about the sub before me
The Ox hits the side netting... Some of the crowd thought it was in
Desmond at SJP
Shane Long has equalized for Soton at SJP.
Too much reliance on the DVR, mate.
Inside the last ten minutes - wow!
Will Arsene stay loyal with Cech or will he drop him for Ospina?
Could West Ham get a third with the Gunners going all out for the next goal
Arsenal fans starting to bail - why?
That's always the danger, right?
That's always the danger, right?
He'll be in goal for the whole season... he the difference
Hammers hanging on to the ball well.
What if he keeps making mistakes?
Sakho does well to chase down the wing and then win a corner. More seconds off the clock.
Great run from The Ox and then a ball in to Giroud who balloons it over. I can hear the swearing in Alexandria from here.
chance for Giroud but well over... it is getting really late
Again, if the Arse score one...they could score another
I disagree with subbing from West Ham. It is just asking the ref to add more time. Just keep your team on for less time!
Now Lee Dixon is all skeptical about Arsenal. What happened to his confidence at the beginning of the match?
Pleased that WH went for the goal and not the corner flag
Five added minutes... probably for the head incident
Not enough time, in my estimation.
Well, Arsenal had what seemed like a catastrophic loss on the opening day a couple of years ago and still finished top four.
According to my calculations, if the score stays the same.. the Arse will be bottom!
-2 like Sunderland and Norwich but without a goal
Oh - that tame from Alexis.
Sanchez with a chance... backpass
Could be.
The Hammers fans singing that they are going to win the league
Arsenal did lose to Villa one opening day and went on a great run
Great save by Adrian from Alexis!
Kick save and a beaut by Adrian
Game over
The Hammers have won two nil and in the top three... Arsenal rock bottom
Yeah - I think that was a couple of years ago. I forgot who beat them.
And that's it - I won't be calling me bruvver today, for sure.
It's all over at SJP to - Desmond there.
I'm off, mate - the painters are here and I have to supervise.
Desmond stays at SJP
At the Em, 62% possession... who cares!!
I am off for walkies. I'll be back for a Stoke win which will really make a great weekend going for United
TTFN
I am back from a short walk... Shadow just seemed disinterested on going for a walk...what a numpty
Looks like I'll be flying solo for this last match.
A Stoke win would just keep this weekend going up and up even after I was really down after United's win
Starting line ups
Stoke XI: Butland; Johnson, Cameron, Muniesa, Pieters; Whelan, Adam; Walters, van Ginkel, Afellay; Diouf.
Liverpool XI: Mignolet, Clyne, Skrtel, Lovren, Gomez, Henderson, Milner, Lallana, Ibe, Coutinho, Benteke.
Same as the end of last season please!
Thanks to a computer this is the first time in Premier League history that the same fixture will played consecutively in the same stadium
AGAIN... same result please
Teams in the tunnel... here they come
Post Gerrard Liverpool wearing black
We are off but of course I missed the beginning...my DVR was back again!!
What is going on!!
Hit the LIVE BUTTON NOCITO
Stevie G in action today against Seattle...not exactly the Prem!
Will he be up watching it...it is only 6 a.m.
How is he going to watch the 7:45 matches...4:45!!!
Charlie Adam had a chance to open the scoring against his old club like he did in the 6-1er... whiff
I was thinking about picking Brendan as my pick for the CAN... if they don't start well it very well could be him
Wonder how many did pick him
What has the world come to? Players moving from Nou Camp to the Britannia
Stoke were 5 up at half time last time
Not much happening so far
I think I am doing was BD is doing... watching paint dry
Milner had a chance there but his control was pants... England international...cost millions... cant control it
I've said this before but I think Mark Hughes is my least favorite ex Red Devil. He seems to not have any affection for United, which is sad. He was a very important player in two stints
Skrtel gets a yellow for the Reds... or are they Blacks today?
Glen Johnson, inside right by the penalty spot...tries to do all these moves and then kick it over the bar... HIT THE BALL
MY GB choice has hardly touched the ball
Milner with tackle on Adam and Charlie wasn't happy
Yellow for the ex Elland Roader
Learned that type of tackling in Yorkshire?
Mark Hughes doesn't look happy
Even after my comments about Hughes... could he ever get the job at OT?
I think it is going to be LVG then Giggs
2 added minutes
Half time
nil nil
as I said earlier... Bob my be more excited watching his paint dry
Second half underway
Hope it gets better
Just back from doing the dishes
Still nil nil
No sign of Ings... left to sit on bench. That is with Sturridge still to come back
Will he ever play?
Almost to the hour mark and Emre Can having a chat with the gaffer. Looks like he is about to come on
11 weeks.... 77 days since the 6-1er and now we get this
Wonder what color Bob's paint is?
Is it the outside of his house?
Is it rooms?
Which one?
Top of the table as I type
Leicester City
Crystal Palace
West Ham Utd
Aston Villa
Man Utd
Here comes Emre Can for Lalliana
So much for a great second season
The Premier League was down in quality last season and I think it is continuing this term.
Why are the English teams trying to be non-English?
The foreigners used to hate playing the English way... now everyone plays the same way
Decent diving catch save by Butland from a Skrtel header
20 minutes to go
I should have gone on my five mile walk instead of watching this...or watch Bob's paint dry
I'm just going to keep using that old joke
Henderson with a great run but a useless effort of a cross
Either shoot or find a teammate
Stoke lose the ball trying to get the ball out of their own half
A lot of these players are not good enough to work the ball out... a lot wearing red at Old Trafford... Jones, Smalling, Valencia...
Last season, United were behind from the get go after losing at home to Swansea...now United have a lead
Stoke playing bloody possession again... I HATE IT!!
I know I keep harping on about it but why pass the ball backwards and sideways and not go anywhere
Am I just old?
Benteke almost played thru... well defended
Almost EVERY team these days go out with the number one goal...NOT TO LOSE. Second... maybe win...third and definitely last... to entertain
Ibe comes off for Affelay
Odemwingie on for Adam
Ten minutes to play... will there be a winner... I doubt it
Stoke with a chance but a weak effort blocked by Skrtel
Fermino came on for Pool.
Liverpool visit the EM and OT in their next two away games... Chelsea and Citeh to follow soon after
Wasted free kick by Odemwingie
Aussie cricket coach in the stands watching
Not sure which is worse for him. Watching this dross or the Aussies getting walloped in 3 out of 4 Tests
This would be the first nil niller of the season after 8 matches
GOAL... what a strike by Coutinho with a rocket past Butland
85th minute
Great turn and great shot
Not in the upper 90 but still not saveable
Coutinho was about to taken off!
This puts Liverpool above United by alphabet
That goal didn't belong in this game
This better not give Pool a push for the season.. completely underserved... well... so was United's win
A chance of getting the ball in the box with a free kick
Odemwingie kicks the ball straight after out of bounds!
BLOODY HOPELESS
3 added minutes
This result is the first negative one for United
A goal down
90 seconds to go
Stoke have no urgency!!!
That's it
Liverpool have won undeservedly 1-0 and off to a winning start
A lonely late morning on LOB for me but I'll be back tomorrow for the game at the Hawthorns
TTFN
