Capital One Cup Semi Final Live!
It's Capital One Cup semi final time, chaps. This competition has had a large bearing on the outcome of the PPP game each season, as the winning team is worth 6 points and the losing finalist 2 points. Today it's Stoke v. Liverpool at the Britannia. Most seasons, you might fancy Liverpool; however, Sparky Hughes' Stoke are playing better stuff than they've usually been accustomed to in the Potteries. Join me from 3pm onward on BEin and here on the blog.

Both sides will therefore look to history and strongly fancy their chances. Stoke have the additional, and arguably more relevant, benefit of better recent results. Xherdan Shaqiri, Marko Arnautović and Bojan Krkić are in-form and flying, while Liverpool haven’t been clicking lately at all, though they could be fired up by Jurgen Klopp’s bollocking in the wake of whatever that was at West Ham last Saturday. So good luck in calling what could be a brilliant evening’s entertainment: the last four stagings of this particular fixture have ended 3-1, 3-5, 6-1 and 0-1. It’s the League Cup semi-final! It’s the first leg! It’s on!
Here are the PPP implications. The following participants have Liverpool as League Cup winners:
Red Devil 1FCK, Red Dragon, Swansong, UWS
The following have Liverpool as losing finalists:
Blue Devil, Chelskilad, Simon
In addition, Red Dragon and The Saint have Stoke as losing finalists.
Almost kick-off time - here is the team news:
Stoke City: Butland, Johnson, Shawcross, Wollscheid, Pieters, Cameron, Whelan, Shaqiri, Afellay, Arnautovic, Krkic.
Subs: Joselu, Wilson, van Ginkel, Adam, Walters, Crouch, Haugaard.
Liverpool: Mignolet, Clyne, Toure, Lovren, Moreno, Can, Lucas, Allen, Lallana, Firmino, Coutinho.
Subs: Milner, Benteke, Brannagan, Ibe, Bogdan, Smith, Randall.
Referee: Anthony Taylor (Cheshire).
Liverpool get us underway in their change strip of all black. And Fermino tests Butland early.
Now it's Moreno testing the Stoke back-four.
This has been an especially quick start for Liverpool. They look well up for this first leg.
Oh - Lallana pulls a great save out of Butland.
This is all Liverpool right now. Stoke can hardly get a touch, and are having difficulty getting out of their own half. The crowd are still giving it plenty, but manager Mark Hughes is concerned enough to walk up to the touchline and deliver several meaningful bollockings to his team. Stoke haven’t got going yet at all.
A first chink of light in attack for Stoke. Johnson briefly threatens to break into the Liverpool box down the right, but gets the ball caught between his legs with Arnautovic waiting in the centre.
It's party time for Liverpool - two back flicks in a row.
Oh - Ibe should have buried that chance - 12 yards out with only the keeper to beat. Straight down Butland's throat. Liverpool may rue these missed chances.
Good afternoon, Bob. I'm pleased to join you . I have trouble getting BEIN at work, but if there's another link then I can follow the action.
I see that's it's 0-0 at the Brit
Now it’s Stoke’s turn to ping it around prettily. It’s all in the middle of the park, and they go nowhere, but it’s some welcome relief. Small acorns, and all that.
Surprisingly we've reached the half way mark without any goals. Some pretty football but nothing to show for it.
More trouble for Klopp. He's already lost Coutinho. Now Lovren is having to trudge off for treatment.
No - James Milner is being hastily readied to come on. That's a real blow for Pool.
I found a link still 0-0 at the Brit
It appears that Klopp's boys didn't warm up on what must be a cold night in Stoke.
GOAL! There's the opening for Liverpool through Jordan Ibe!
Great move there from Pool. Lallana centered, Allen nudged it on to Ibe who seemed to have lost the chance for a moment but then steadied himself and clubbed a left-footed effort past Butland.
GOAL !!! JORDAN IBE GIVES LIVERPOOL THE LEAD. GREAT MOVE. LALLANA MADE A GREAT RUN DOWN THE RIGHT AND HIS PASS WAS MISSED BY jOE aLLAEN BEFORE iBE SCORED WITH A GREAT FINISH PAST BUTLAND
Liverpool were in again thru Fermino but Shawcross foiled him.
Arnautovic had a chance to tie it up, but glanced a free header wide from a cross by Glen Johnson.
Great tackle by Shawcross on Ibe for A Pool corner. Kolo Toure heads straight to Butland off the corner
Sorry it was Fermino , not Kolo
Hi there, MUR! Sorry - I didn't see you come on. It's been a lively encounter at the Brit.
Well wide by Ibe after Lallana did well to get a cross in.
No probs, mate. It's great to enjoy the pleasure of your company. I've enjoyed the few minutes I have watched. It looks to be a great contest
Affelay has a long range effort deflected straight to Minnie.
It has been - end to end stuff, although the Reds have had the better of it.
It's really tipping down now on poor Sparky on the touchline. You'd never throw your Sparky out in the rain, would you?
It appears that the Reds or is it All Blacks are controlling the match.
Three minutes of stoppage time on a rainy evening.
Half-time comes: this is non-stop entertainment, though Liverpool fans may be enjoying it more than Stoke’s right now.
Shaquiri has a long range effort deflected for a corner.,
The corner from Bojan is headed away then Minnie is forced to make a decent save
Liverpool are one up at the half at the Brit
Some great half-time highlights there.
We're back on for the second half - I wonder if Sparky was able to dry off during his team talk.
Can has a bang from distance - not too far away.
Yank defender Cameron has given way to Jonathan Walters in an attacking swap. Sparky's going for it.
I wonder why Sparky wears only a suit in cold , rainy weather . What does he expect
Sparky pretty much has to or else win at Anfield, where he will not exactly win a popularity contest
Agreed - he should have had his mac on.
Sparky wearing the overcoat to protect his expensive suit. Brings on an attacker and defends the suit
Liverpool play away to Exeter in three days in another cup competition. Talk about strange scheduling.
Kolo called for pushing Walters in the back
The free kick from Arnautovic was headed out by Kolo. Shawcross had a shot blocked then Glen whelan blasted over
Not sure what that ball was from Lallana. Klippity Klopp looks bemused as well.
Bojan has been well bossed by the Pool middies today.
Five players out with hammies? That sounds like poor training to me.
Are the hammies for Liverpool or Stoke? That is a rather large number of hammy injuries.
A nice slide rule pass from Arnautovic was inches too long for Shaquiri.
It's been a scrappier second half which plays into Liverpool's hands.
Kolo Toure clears for a Stoke corner.
Liverpool. Coutinho and Lovren both hobbled off today. Could also be Sturridge and some others.
The corner from Bojan is headed away
Thanks Bob. Klopp needs to evaluate his assistants on the training ground .
Firmino drags an effort wide from just outside the box.
The man bun doesn't seem to be working for Arnautovic today.
Glen Johnson fouls Ibe in great position for the Pool
Agreed. it looks wilted
Pool nearly go two up as a close range effort is cleared off the line as Stoke struggled to clear away a free kick
Oh - Ibe went for goal looking for his brace and his teammates weren't so pleased about it.
Jordan Ibe shows his skill . he received a pass , turned a defender then shot into the side netting
Shawcross was up in attack as he headed a cross from Walters well over. Sparky was not impressed.
Like for like as Joselu is on for Bojan, illustrating Bob's point
Mignolet picks up a booking for time wasting.
Minnie booked for time wasting. A silly yellow to pick up as there's plenty of time left in this match
Butland Stoke got away with one there as Butland's clearance bounced off of Firmino and back to Butland.
Minnie did well to tip over a shot from Joselu that deflected off of Kolo
Allen trudging off and Benteke trudging on.
Cheerio, David - I'm off to do some errands with Kate.
Cheers Bob. It was great chatting with you. I hope you and Kate have a great rest of the day
Crouchie on for Shaquiri against his old mates as Sparky really throws caution to the wind
Minnie punches away a cross for A Stoke corner
Kolo is holding his hammy. That would make half a dozen for Pool as we enter three minutes of stoppage time
Walters drags an effort wide of goal as he got behind the Pool defense and that should do it. That's it as Pool record a 0-1 victory at the Brit and have the advantage in the second leg and are all but set for a trip to Wembuhlay
That's it for me . Cheers.
