The FA Cup 3rd Round Starts Here!
It all starts here, lads! It's the Third Round of the FA Cup - my favorite weekend of the season. Back when we were kids, it was all over in a flash, with all fixtures kicking off at 3pm GMT on a Saturday afternoon. Now, because of the vagaries of the FA and the big money involved in televised footer, we have the Third Round spread across the entire weekend. We purists can gnash our teeth at that, but it means that we've got a Friday evening fixture, Liverpool traveling to meet up with lowly Exeter, currently 16th in League 2. It's the romance of the Cup and all that, so don't forget to join me around 3pm this afternoon here on the LOB!

Good afternoon, Bob. I should be around for the first half, but I'm not sure about the second half.
Afternoon, mate - are you as excited as I am about the FA Cup this season? It quickly disappear at noon tomorrow if the results don't go my way, but I love the anticipation.
Bloody hell - it's Keith Costigan. I haven't seen him around these parts since he was playing the "bartender" on the old Fox Football Fone-in show on FSC.
The pundits are terming this one "The Hipster Manager Derby." Jurgen Klippity Klopp's hipster credentials are well established at this point. But Exeter are managed by the natty dresser and bon vivant Paul Tisdale. So who will be sporting the cravat and country tweed this afternoon?
Not surprisingly, Klopp is disrespecting the FA Cup tradition by fielding an under-strength side. Here's the team news out of Exeter:
Exeter: Olejnik, Woodman, Brown, Ribeiro, Read, Moore-Taylor, Tillson, Noble, Holmes, Nichols, Nicholls.
Subs: McAllister, Oakley, Davies, Morrison, Hoskins, Hamon, Grant.
Liverpool: Bogdan, Randall, Tiago Ilori, Jose Enrique, Smith, Stewart, Brannagan, Kent, Teixeira, Benteke, Sinclair.
Subs: Lallana, Lucas, Fulton, Ojo, Chirivella, Maguire, Masterson.
Referee: Stuart Attwell (Warwickshire)
Hello mate. I am definitely excited. I always look forward to the Third Round of the Cup. I hope we cuts through our opponents tomorrow like a knife through butter.
A hip, romantic cup tie. I can count on you to come up with interesting trivia. well in.
Teams in the tunnel now....
Yikes! It's the Liverpool reserves other than Beneteke , who will be expected to Teke away some chances at SJP.
Klopp lost on his last visit to SJP , so he will hope to win at SJP today
I guess Lucas and Lallana will come on if thee going gets tough
Paul Tisdale has been talking some trash ahead of this match:
"Liverpool haven't got their strongest side. I have to say, I don't know a great deal about their team, but they are Liverpool."
And he's wearing a nifty porkpie hat tonight. Nice!
If the goals continue to dry up for Benteke, I fear that he's headed for the Liverpool reserves.
Yikes ! Is Paul Tisdale manager of the Grecians or poster boy for GQ? At least Klopp dresses like a coach
I agree. He needs to teke away some chances and they're off from SJP
Liverpool get us going on a decidedly rough looking L2 pitch. Those kits aren't going to stay white for long.
I don't blame Tisdale. I'm sure he feels Liverpool are showing a lack of respect
A decent cross get crossed in but Exeter's Austrian keeper Oleynik smothers it.
I agree. It's better than the pitches in the 70s, but not up to par with the Prem pitches.
Then Bogdan gets catching practice, catching a cross from Hoolmes, not Watson
Some tasty challenges coming in early. This is likely to be a good, old fashioned blood and thunder cup tie on a muddy pitch. Luv it!
Do you remember when United were held 0-0 by the Grecians at OT. We won the replay 1-3 on this pitch and this was when Exeter were a Conference side.
I agree.I think the first goal will be crucial in this match
Texeira was caught in an Exeter sandwich there. Ouch!
Texeira wins a free kick off a slightly naughty challenge.
You and UWS have deep knowledge of team nicknames. That would make for a great trivia question.
Benteke was nearly in there but Oleynik grabbed it again.
Ta. It would be interesting
Credit to the Grecians for trying to play football instead of playing route one. Well done to the L 2 side
GOAL! Exeter take the lead - OH MY STARS!!!!!!!
GOAL !!!! TOM NICHOLLS GIVES THE L 2 SIDE THE LEAD. POOR DEFENDING BY JOSE ENRIQUE.
What a goal! Tom Nichols latched on to a great ball over from Lee.
Fantastic - romance of the Cup and all that.
Oh - great save by Oleynik!
Enrique failed to read the danger as Read got a lobbed pass then got behind Enrique down the right and his pass was diverted in by Nicholls
Good football there from Liverpool with a patient build-up. They'll need to be patient and take their chances when they come.
Liverpool respond immediately and Oleniyk made a great save from Brad Smith off a corner.
GOAL! Liverpool are back in it!
It could easily have been a penalty there for a chop on Benteke but the ref let play run and Jerome Sinclair buried it in the corner.
1-1!
Jordan Sinclair shot past Oleynik after Beneteke appeared to be fouled in the box. The ref played the advantage and
GOAL !!! 1-1 AS JORDAN SINCLAIR SCORED WITH A WELL PLACED SHOT PAST OLEYNIK
The Grecians must be devastated, having taken the lead against Liverpool and sensing a giant killing . The conceded minutes later.,
Liverpool win a corner and the Grecians struggle to clear.
The Reds or should I say Whites look firmly in control of this match , albeit a young reserve side.
Nice shot on the spin there from Texeira. He could easily be the replacement for Coutinho when injured.
Texeira has a shot deflected for a corner off a run and pass from Kent in Devon
Kent gets the ball from a corner, but run the ball out of play
I agree. There are some promising youngsters on the pitch in case some of the regulars lose form
I don't mind as much the big clubs blooding their youngsters in the League Cup, but I'm irked by the treatment of the FA Cup.
I wonder if fitness will be an issue as the match wears on
I agree. That never happened in our day. Also, why does the Prem schedule matches three days after the Third Round of the Cup? That doesn't help matters.
Nice footwork by Kent before being chopped down.
Kent is bundled down by Noble, probably embarrassed at the skill showed by the youngster
Free kick chance now for Pool. Played short and then a cross shot from Randall. Good save from Olejnik
Nichols concedes a free kick just outside the Exeter box. Taken shot. A cross shot from Randall is just wide off a solo run.
Exeter wins a corner off another run down the right as Jose Enrique was caught out of position again
An in swinging corner is headed away by Texeira , then the offside flag is raised.
Oh - Noble should have probably scored there. That really would have put the cat amongst the pigeons. Great match!
A poor Liverpool clearance went to Ribeiro and his pass is blasted over by Noble from close range. That was a great chance for the Grecians.
Almost half an hour gone now and this one could easily go either way. Liverpool are controlling possession but the Grecians are capable of scoring more goals.
Kent got free down the right and his pass across the box was cut out for a corner
The corner from Branagan is headed out
I expect Liverpool to win as the Grecians may tire in the second half since they've done quite a bit of chasing
A classic shot of a muddy patch . Liverpool players will not be used to these conditions.
Great defensive header there from Benteke from the Exeter corner.
Randall concedes a corner to the Grecians. Beneteke heads away the corner.
I am here with 6 minutes of the half to go
HATE what team Liverpool put out!!
A long range deflected effort from Stewart is well saved by Oleynik off a long possession
Good afternoon, UWS. Bob and I stated the same thing.
I need to get ready for my last class. I will try to be around for the latter stages of the match. Cheers!
Oh - huge chance there from Ribeiro. Should have buried that header from Lee Holmes' cross.
Cheerio, mate!
Just took the ref's quiz
13/15
lucky guess on one but knew the rest
WOW!!!!!
2-1 Exeter!!!
GOAL! Lee Holmes has put Exeter back in the lead! Fantastic!
Welcome, UWS - you got here just in time!
It's been a cracking match!
Adam Bogdan should have done much better there.
And that's the half-time whistle. A super time for Exeter to score. That will make the south western folk's half time Bovril a lot cheerier now. The dream is on!
Well in on the ref's quiz - thought you might like that one.
How's your first week back been, mate?
The second half has started at SJP. Let's hope it's as good as the first half.
It's been a long week...especially with the bloody temperature... we were spoiled for a while
When do you start up
Liverpool’s players were sent out of their poky dressing room several minutes before Exeter’s joined them and in the commentary box, Danny Murphy notes that rather than do stretches or sprints in a bid to get ready for the second half, they just stood around chatting.
Liverpool go close...great save!
Oh - great save from Olejnik from a super header from Benteke. Real Gordon Banks v. Pele stuff.
I've been putting in office hours all week. We have pre-semester meetings at the end of next week and then start up after MLK Day.
I can't stand how managers... not just foreigners... treat the FA Cup!!
Klopper giving the competition no respect
Big Sam complaining about league games midweek next week so he's going to put out a crappy team against the holders
Bournemouth pleased a man that got a red is only going to miss the cup match
LVG... what are you going to do?
I agree with you, mate. It's not as if Liverpool have any chance of winning the title (or even of getting into Europe). Their only chance of silver ware is through winning a cup.
I hope that you play a full-strength side. I'd like to see a 12-0 drubbing of the Evil Blades.
It is kind of fun to see some of these young kids that Liverpool has on its books - I've been impressed by Texeira, Sinclair and Kent.
Still time to go then!
I have a meeting on the Tuesday of that week for me moving jobs
I used to teach at Oneida Middle School that had 6-8. It then changed to 7-8 and then they decided to shut it down and move to 1-8s around the district. Now, the new SI has decided to reopen it again next year so I am going to have to go back!
I am now # 1 in seniority in the Math Dept so i can pretty much pick my spot
I leaning toward remedial for a change.
It used to be where everyone went out to pasture but it is gotten a hard gig now but still not as bad as 120 students!
12-0?? How many games do you plan on having United play the Blades? Maybe we can score twelve if we play they ten times!
Liverpool are looking really dicey at the back with the high balls that the Grecians are launching into the area.
Now, now - New Year's Resolution and all that.
This is not all Liverpool right now!
didn't say anything negative... I didn't say they would win all ten
An hour gone - Klippity has got to start thinking of throwing some of the first team lads on soon. Pedro Chirivella is not what I was thinking about.
Not at all - Liverpool dominated the first half possession but Exeter have been excellent. They have had lots of chances.
Do you think Exeter might want Pool to equalize to get a big day out and a big pay day
Think I should do remedial?
Noble hoiks one well over the bar, but Exeter continue to press for a third goal. Noble trudges off after a job well done. Matt Oakley - a familiar face - comes on.
You need a 12 step group for United supporters. Any time you're feeling negative about LVG, you should have a sponsor to call. One day at a time, mate.
Now Ilori has lost his attacker and had to bring him down. Good free kick chance now.
About my job
Oh - just over the bar from Nichols but didn't challenge Bogdan. Incredible that you see L2 players trying the same technique as Ronaldo or Drogba.
Sorry, I missed that earlier. Yeah - I think remedial might really suit you. I loved doing remedial at the beginning of my career because those kids really worked hard. You might miss the kids who more intrinsically like math but the change would be good. I know you haven't enjoyed your time in Schenectady schools.
Sad thing is that not many have wanted to do well
Another Liverpool goal - goalscorer Sinclair coming off and some bloke named Ojo coming on. I cannot believe that Lallana hasn't come on. Ridiculous from Kloppers.
Do have a hat like the Exeter manager?
Looks sharpish
I did an 11/12 mix of American history during my first job in Mass. A lot of students who had failed the course before. There were some head cases, but once I'd dealt with them, the others were good to work with.
GOAL! Liverpool have found Desmond!
Bugger.... Desmond!
The goal was a rebound from a clearance Clarence
A bit jammy for Liverpool. The ball came in from Ojo and when it was cleared out, it was stuffed back in.
2-2!
Liverpool will have to push for a winner now - you know, fixture congestion and all of that.
Really hope Exeter get something from this
They deserve it AND Klopper deserves to have their team knackered by another game... They'll have the league game this midweek at home to the league leaders. A midweek game the following week for this replay and then the second leg of the league cup in the following week... serves him right
Please make it happen...under ten to go
Well, they'll definitely get a big pay day with a match at Anfield now. Into stoppage time.
one of the four added minutes played
Late, late chance now for Exeter to swing one in.
kadumpf it anywhere
Blow up ref
That's it!!
Fans are happy
Players are happy
Congrats Exeter
That's it - Exeter City are into the 4th Round now. Well done, the Grecians.
Klopp has bought himself another needless match with his nonsense. Not impressed.
I'm off to the store
Talk to you tomorrow mate
TTFN
That's it for me, mate. Great chatting with you. See you in the early morning?
