Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!
107 Comments:
Afternoon, chaps! This is England’s first game since their 23 was announced, so it will be fascinating to see what Woy turns out.
The Fox Soccer 2 Go coverage starts at 2:35pm EST with a 2:45 kick-off.
Here's the team news out of Wemberly:
England: Hart, Walker, Cahill, Smalling, Rose, Dier, Alli, Milner, Rooney, Kane, Vardy.
Subs: Forster, Sterling, Lallana, Clyne, Henderson, Sturridge, Stones, Wilshere, Barkley, Rashford, Heaton.
Portugal: Rui Patricio, Vieirinha, Bruno Alves, Carvalho, Eliseu, João Moutinho, João Mário, Danilo Pereira, Nani, Rafa, Adrien Silva.
Subs: Lopes, Fonte, Guerreiro, Eder, William Carvalho, Andre Gomes, Renato Sanches, Quaresma, Cedric, Eduardo.
Now that's what we're talking about! Ten changes from the side that turned out a dull 2-1 win over the Aussies last week. Vardy and Kane up front together - chceck. Roon in the hole for the first time. Dele Alli - check. Dier in the holding role - check.
No Skippy tonight for the Portugeezers. He must be resting after all of that penalty-taking exertion for Real at the weekend.
We're on live on Fox Soccer 2 Go now. Great atmosphere at Wemberly.
National anthems now - Jose Mourinho is in his seat for this afternoon's action.
Portugal appear to be playing without a recognized striker - our old friend Nani playing as a false #9.
A chilly night at Wemberly, apparently - that should suit the home side. And Portugal get us underway.
Rafa Silva has a problem early on here. Hobbling a bit as he comes away from a clash with Cahill.
Nice ball through from Walker but Roon couldn't get it down.
Fairly cagey start to proceedings here, with few if any real openings.
Portugal are a useful opponent tonight, as they are very much like England's typical quarter final opponents to come.
Oh - Roon had a chance there, but he drifted offside as Kane's ball went through. Didn't beat the keeper, in any case.
The Portugal defense, led by Chelski old boy Ricardo Carvalho, are playing a risky game with a very high, flat line across the back. I reckon with England's pace that they could do some damage.
Jamie Vardy seems to be playing out wide left. Shame about that - I'd like to see him bombing down the middle with Kane.
Don't like Alli's reaction to that wanker Carvallo's provocation.
Dicey there with Smalling grabbing the shirt of Rafa. Naughty - got away with it.
Afternoon, mate! I don't like it either. He can't take the bait like that in the tournament.
Danny Rose seems to have got a knock on the nose in that incident.
Neither side has got started yet.
Hiya! I just don't want another petulant reaction to sink England's chances.
Nice cross by Eliseu but Rose intervened well to knock it out.
Exactly - Woy has got to tell the youngsters that they won't get away with anything in France this month. Any push or head-butt motion is likely to get a player sent off. And Carvalho knows exactly what he's doing.
Oh - free header for Roon at the backpost. He got no power in it. Straight into the keeper's arms. Damn!
Walker's finding some joy down this right hand side. Wins a corner now.
Oh dear - short corner straight to a Portuguese player from Kane. Why take it short when you've got a height advantage?
Paul Doyle on the Guardian comments: "If this match doesn’t perk up soon, fans would be well advised to leave Wembley to watch the traffic, never mind beating it."
Couldn't agree more.
Decent free kick in and Carvalho meets it with purchase. Well wide though.
Oh - decent drive from Walker there. Just wide with a slice.
Blimey! You don't see that very often in a friendly. Bruno Alves has been sent off for a kung fu kick to Harry Kane's head.
Portugal down to ten men!
I sent a message to a friend who is at Wembley to bite a chunk out of Alves if he gets near to her. Hah, that twat just gets himself sent off in a friendly. Does that count against his Euro games?
Rafa Silva, who's looked very lively, is being sacrificed now for another defensive player.
I was wondering the same thing? Might actually be to their advantage. Playing an aging center back pairing like Carvalho and Alves is hardly positive, eh?
Oh - Kane was through there but shot straight at the keeper. England's forwards have looked nervy when they've had a chance. The expectations are weighing on them, I suspect.
Another good through ball to Roon, but he doesn't have the legs for it. That's the dilemma with playing Roon. He just doesn't have the pace any more.
Cahill into the book for a rash slide-in on Nani.
Coming down to the last few minutes of the first half now - not nearly good enough for England.
This is the kind of opponent that England likely to meet in the Quarters. They'll have to beat them outright if they're to escape the dreaded extra time/penalties scenario we know so well.
I'm off home now ahead of the interval. I'll be back for the second half.
See ya. You may be right. I can't believe that irritant Pepe won't feature in the tournament ahead of these guys
BTW, I used to belittle the Portuguese side for painting lovely pictures without having any punch. Now, this awful collection of cheats, divers, and assassins who carry the stench of Little Jo make me pine for the likes of Sa and Joao Pinto, and Rui Costa. What a national embarrassment the current Portuguese side is.
I'm home now - I thoroughly agree. Even a few years back Portugal used to have an abundance of nippy little midfielders who'd play some lovely stuff (albeit to little effect, as you say). This lot plays more like Wimbledon.
Nearly an hour in and still no breakthrough. This is dire.
SO BAD
SO SAD
Why is Vardy AND Kane playing out wide?
Why is Alli playing on the left?
This bloody Diamond is supposed to get width from the full backs and the strikers playing narrower as a partnership
Jesus, this game was ill-advise. Neither side can give a toss and the P-Geezers keep fouling. This is awful.
Decent free kick chance now for Kane. Not sure why he's taking it, though. Is he another one who doesn't like to get his head in the danger zone?
England have the ball in the net but the whistle went an age ago.
Kane to take the free kick
WHY?
Put the center forward in the box!
Foul called on some bloke in white
Card every one of these mouthy sods. Whine-whine-whine over and over.
Wilshire on for Milner
Did Sterling go on?
Who did Sterling come on for?
That's Vardy's game over - not good from him but then he was played in the wrong position, out wide left. Sterling is the man if Woy wants a wide left man. I don't know why Rose can't play that role.
Wilshere on for Milner who plodded along today.
Change the shape? Change the shape? What's he talking about. How about give it some shape in the first place>
Afternoon, mate - are you still angry with me?
Yer wot?
Martin Tyler wants to have Carvalho's baby.
Rooney ruins this team by splitting up Kane and Vardy
That's for UWS - I mistakenly left him off the list of LOB participants on the email to Brett Thompson this morning.
You're not wrong there, UWS
"I'm not sorry" Balloon bouquet with Little Joe's smug mug dispatched.
England are playing against TEN men!
No change of tactics?
No change of pace
No pushing someone up more attacking
I HATE IT!!
IT'S LVG ALL OVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!
I agree - I would prefer to have Vardy and Kane up front and Dele Alli in the hole rather than Roon. But there's no reason that Woy can't use a diamond and two up front. Or he can play a 4-3-3 if he wants a wide man out left. But he's deliberately played a couple of players out of position today. It doesn't make any sense.
LOL, Gooner!
Can't wait to hear from Talksport with Andy Goldstien and Jason Cundy after this one... they are going slaughter Woy
Bet Woy wishes he had Carroll to bring on to haunt Carvalho like a condor from above.
Hugh in France: Excellent tactics from England. This should reduce the expectation and pressure from the fans. Nice one Roy.
Pope Packard: This games got me thinking. What's the best way to arrange DVDs? Alphabetical or by genre
Mocky Hussain: This game is Dier.
Looks like Arsene Wenger is at Wemblerly tonight scouting another couple of nippy little Portuguese midfielders.
United's Jose is there too
No thank-you. I wouldn't have one of these to replace the dross we've collected at RFK. Proper striker, please.
I don't know if I want England to get a winner here... it will give Woy ammunition to say he's right
Rose.... FAILS to get the ball across
The Art of Crossing has died!
Danilo into the book now.
If Sturridge breaks down again, there is a chance that Woy could call up Carroll, right?
Again... Kane to take a free kick... is hie going to shoot?
Is he going to come off after?
Useless effort... deflected for a goal kick
Kane is coming off and being replaced by Sturridge
Speak of the devil - Sturridge on for Kane for a brief cameo.
Rooney also coming off to be replaced by Lallana.
This referee is going to hear Carvalho's pathetic whining in his nightmares for weeks.
He'd bring in Townsend
Rooney off for Lalana
Don't get who is going to play there!!
I am so fed up!
Maybe, it is going to be good... I am always feeling confident going into tournament and we blow
Maybe it is the opposite this year!!!
Not Lalala! Neither Alves nor Pepe is on the pitch to decapitate him and make Woy pick an alternative.
What about Pepe in the CL Final last week?
Two times grabbing his face
The ref just stared at him once shaking his head
SHOULD HAVE GONE OFF
This is what worries me about England. I don't doubt that we'll scratch our way unconvincingly through the group stages and Round of 16, but if this is the way that England play against ten-man Portugal, there is no way that they can beat any decent side in the knock-out rounds.
I think I'd prefer Sturridge with a gammy leg to Townsend.
Soon had a header easily saved in the first half and there have been a couple of long range shots easily collected by the keeper... has that been it?... AGAINST TEN MEN
Pull the trigger, you numpties!!
Pepe needs career shortening. He's that hateful.
You're right. There's no reason why Woy doesn't react to the Alves sending off by releasing the hounds. And I don't mean that naff purse-dog Lalala
Sturrridge would take a shot with his right... You're a professional
wouldn't
Oh - Quaresma nearly deflated all of Wembley with one moment there. Just wide.
I bet you a tenner that Woy is going to say
"I am happy with the performance"
" We had a lot of possession"
"It's very difficult to play against ten men"
Jose in the stands joining in with the Mexican wave with the rest of the bored Wembley fans
Crikey - when will the Ricardo Carvalho love-fest end?
Bugger... England have scored!!
Smelling with the a decent header from a decent cross
STILL NOT BLOODY GOOD ENOUGH
GOAL! Smalling finally wins it for England in the 85th minute.
First decent ball in of the night - met by Smalling.
1-0!
Only three clubs have scored for England this year!!
Tottenham- Kane and Alli
Leicester- Vardy
United- Rooney, Rashfrod, and Smalling
Thanks Martin
I'd have to say that, if Woy is determined to play someone out wide left, it should be Sterling, not Vardy. Then Vardy off the bench after the hour mark.
Decent goal on to gloss up a terrible game.
Really? Might as well send Joe Hart up to the other end to hunt for one for Man City.
Eder on for Carvalho now. Martin Tyler is heart-broken.
And Jordan Henderson on for Dele Alli.
I hope he's met in the baths by someone with a lead pipe.
Cry-valho, that is.
Terrible making on the corner... Portugal should have scored there
Reminds me of the Red Devil defending
RIGHT FULL BACK... man of the match
ENOUGH SAID!
All over
Bloody Useless!
Off to an open house
TTFN
#14 is who Wenger is probably spotting with those kind of aerial skills with no one marking him.
Kyle Walker - MOTM. Not a good sign if the right back is MOTM.
And that's that. They've won all of their warm-up matches, but in unconvincing fashion. Perhaps they'll go and surprise us when they get started a week Saturday. Who knows?
Enjoy your Open House, mate.
I'm off, too. Nice chatting with you lads.
Cheerio all.
