Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

England v. Oz Live!

After two very busy weeks of May Term teaching, it's a pleasure to be at the end of my course and just about on summer vacation. So, I thought it might be fitting to take a sneaky peek in the office this afternoon as the Engerland boys take on the Socceroos in a Euro 2016 warm-up at the Stadium of Light. If you're in a similar mood, join me for the action.

Afternoon, chaps - I've got the link for this evening's match up and running on Fox Soccer 2 Go. They're featuring an earlier interview with Woy.

And here come the teams!

Not at all happy with Woy's selection there. I know that he's resting some players (e.g., Kane, Hart), but it indicates that the likes of Henderson and Wilshere, both just coming back from injury, are central to Woy's thoughts. It also looks as if he's likely to start only one striker up front (today it's Rashford with Kane and Vardy rested), even against modest opposition such as Australia. Henderson, Wilshere and Drinkwater represent as many as three holding middies in the side (sigh). Stones comes in for the injury worried Cahill alongside Smalling. Yikes!

National anthems now, starting with the Aussie one.

Jedinak appears to have permanently lost his razor.

And now we've got a tune about some old lady.

2:44 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

All set to go, now. I'm hoping for a balls-out attack from the boys this evening, but I suspect that it might be a rather plodding, "professional" outing.

2:45 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Good afternoon, mate. I agree. It looks like a reserve side.

2:46 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Can't say that I know many of this Oz lot, apart from Jedinak. Luongo seems familiar but I can't quite place him.

2:46 PM

Afternoon, MUR - thanks for your message. I'll clear up those clerical errors.

2:47 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The match is at Fred's digs and he smells a rat originating from Woy.

2:47 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I was listening to an interview with Zlatan which suggested he might be lining up as United's main striker next year - your thoughts?

2:47 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

They're off from the SOL.

2:47 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

And we're away at Fred's place - come on, you England!

2:48 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

If Jose's tactics are not so defensive minded than I'm all for the signing

2:48 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

First real attack goes to the Oz, but it's snuffed out.

2:48 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think Luongo was playing for Swindon while Bailey Wright was playing for PNE and Tom Rogic for Celtic. The Gunners are showing interest in Rogic

GOAL!!!!!!

Rashford! Inside three minutes, he's put England ahead!!!

2:50 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A bizarre clearance from Fraser Forster and he gets away with it then
GOAL !!!! RASHFORD WITH HIS FIRST FOR THE tHREE lIONS

2:50 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Sterling played a pass to Rashford after Raser Forster got away with a bizarre clearance. Sterling then got the ball back from Rashford and his deflected cross was volleyed in by Rashford . The keeper should have done better at his near post

2:52 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Kruse has a shot volleyed for an Aussie corner then Bailey Wright wins a corner. A foul is called off the second corner.

2:53 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Kruse plays with Chicha at Bayer Leverkusen . He must be a decent player

2:54 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Rashford and Zlatan could be a potent strike force at OT. It all depends upon Jose.

Hey Guys
Just on my phone so comments will not be as numerous as normal
Wow Rashford
He started the move too

Thoughts of Jose?

Anyone is better than LVG
Thrilled to win the FA Cup and get rid of him
Jose is not my favorite
Mike told me to get over it. He can start liking United again

I'm back after chatting with one of my students about his final presentation.

3:00 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Good afternoon, UWS. It came seconds after an almost horrible error from Fraser Forster

3:00 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Not keen on the Jose choice. He's never been kind to younger players or English players. He's likely to bring in a load of aging stars and play an even more defensive strategy than LVG did.

3:01 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

My last class is about to begin. My students are working on a review in preparation for the semester exam. I will be watching , but my comments may be sparse.

3:01 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Sterling put Rashford away again there. I like the pace of this England attack. I hope that's a sign for the future.

3:02 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I'm not sure. The signing of Zlatan may be intent that he may be less defensive and may have been told that's what led to the departure of LVG

3:02 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Cheerio, mate!

3:02 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Good pressure from England there.

3:04 PM

Australia are the better team

Blogger United We Stand said...

Great stat
Rashford has scored with this first shot in the Europa League, Premier League and for England

3:09 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I've just gone back and watched that Rashford goal again - really tasty finish.

3:10 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Amazing record for the youngster. I have no doubt that defenders will eventually suss him out as they did with Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney before him, but if he's hot right now, why not play him?

3:11 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Rashford is in amazing form. Woy should take that into account and not be too chicken to play him.

3:17 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Totally agree Gooner

3:18 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Australia do not deserve to be losing
Awful back four. I guess England should go out and try to win games 3-2 or 4-3

3:19 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Steady on. The 'Roos are huff and puff merchants and this is a friendly.

3:21 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Just a friendly.

Blogger gooner71 said...

What's the consensus on Lalala? I think he's a dilettante.

3:27 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Rashfords passing has been intelligent too

3:29 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Agreed, Gooner - he'd barely make the squad for me. Another guy who hasn't had a great season for his club.

3:29 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Don't rate Lalana

3:30 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Delph is gone
Who are two to drop then?
Is Sturridge crocked again??

3:31 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

No Ire two up on Belarus
Rep Ire one up v the Dutch

3:32 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Sounds like Sturridge is crocked again - another thigh injury that is supposed to put him out of commission for 5-6 days. I would rip the Bandaid off and just tell him he's not needed and take Rashford instead.

3:32 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Well done Marcus

3:33 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Heard it was a calf strain

I agree

3:33 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I've been watching off and on while helping students with review problems. Still 1-0.

3:34 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That's half-time. Not great from England, but Rashford's form is exciting. He scored one and could have had another. I'd still like to see Woy really go for it in the second half, pull a defensive middie or two off and let Kane run at them alongside Rashford.

3:34 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Yeah. Sorry for Sturridge, but he's not fit enough, won't be fit enough for a hectic tournament schedule. Rashford's the guy. I'd certainly ditch Lalala in favor of a real alternative like Carroll.

3:38 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Not a bad career
9 goals from 15 shots!!
Surely he'll do better now that LVG is gone!!
LVG says DONT SHOOT ON GOAL WITH YOUR FIRST TOUCH
WHAT A PLONKER

3:45 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

milner and Rooney coming on for the second half

3:48 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Teams back out at the Stadium of Light. A few changes for England on the way. Jamie Milner and Wayne Rooney coming on. Not exactly what I had in mind. Not sure who's one off yet.

3:48 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I second your thinking about Carroll rather than Lalana - he'd make a real impact off the bench. And for once, England don't have much of an aerial threat at set pieces, apart from the center backs.

3:50 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Wilshire has come off

Rooney playing up front?
He's been doing well in midfield
I think Lalana came off too

3:50 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

John Stones has potential but he seems in worrying form right now. I hold my breath whenever he's involved.

3:51 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Both of those changes make sense but why not stick on another striker?

3:51 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Is that because Woy doesn't trust the quality of service that Carroll would get? England's always had aerial threat in it's locker and it's a confounding omission.

3:52 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Stones thinks too much of himself.
Will Jose buy him

3:52 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Nice little move there from Rashford - neither cut them apart.

3:53 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Is wilshire hurt?
Knackered ?
He needs playing time

3:53 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Wrapped in cotton wool probably. Woy loves him so.

3:55 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm off to my class, lads - catch you tomorrow!

3:55 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

See, that's the threat from Australia right there, hoof forward, offside, and an assault on whomever is seated behind the goal. This lot are rubbish.

3:56 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Awful play there by stones at the top of his own box

3:57 PM

Blogger United We Stand said...

Great finish by Rooney!!!

3:58 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Well, that was a nice finish, but it does sort of reinforce Rooney's inclusion in the first team which I don't support.

3:59 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

United 2 England/Australia 0

Are you watching Jose

4:00 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Totally agree with you
If he's in the team it has to be in midfield

4:00 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Nice finish by Roon . Both goals assisted by Sterling and both scored by United players on the break.

4:01 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

What was that that Wilshire was drinking there? Pink Yoo-hoo? Pepto?

4:04 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

That performance should have booked Rashford's ticket.

4:06 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I hope you're right

Right. My ride's here. Cheerio.

Brilliant diving header...into his own net
He had just replaced Smalliing

4:20 PM
