Why Chooses His Provisional Squad
England gaffer Roy Hodgson chose his provisional squad for the Euros this morning - and he's been defending his choices since. Some real surprises in there. Only three center backs - wot?! Marcus Rashford rather than Jermain Defoe? Cor! Jack Wilshere back from the hinterlands? Crikey!
So, you know the drill, England fans - here is the 26-man squad - pick your starting XI:
Goalkeepers - Joe Hart, Paul Heaton, Fraser Forster
Defenders - Nathaniel Clyne, Kyle Walker, Gary Cahill, Chris Smalling, John Stones, Ryan Bertrand, Danny Rose.
Midfielders - Dele Alli, Ross Barkley Fabian Delph, Eric Dier, Danny Drinkwater, Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana, James Milner, Raheem Sterling, Andros Townsend, Jack Wilshere.
Forwards - Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy, Daniel Sturridge, Marcus Rashford.

I'll start us off, then. Here's my starting XI from Woy's 26-man provisional squad:
Hart, Clyne, Walker, Cahill, Smalling, Dier, Alli, Rooney, Sterling, Vardy, Kane.
I'd have a flat back four with Cahill and Smalling in the center, Clyne and Walker at fullbacks, Dier as the holding guy, Sterling out wide right, Delli Alli in a roaming role, Rooney in the hole and Vardy and Kane as an out and out strike partnership up front. Lots of goals there.
Does the squad get trimmed to 23 as in previous tournaments? I realize this is hypothetical as there seems to be some unwritten rule in international football that mind nummingly boring lineups must be selected. Also, why were a dozen midfield players selected? Here is my starting XI:
Hart,Walker, Cahill, Smalling, Rose, Dier, Milner , Lallana, Alli, Roon , Kane.
I'm going with a flat back four too. Same central defensive pairing, but the Spuds fullbacks. Dier will play in front of the back four as the holding midfield player with Milner providing width while Lallana and Alli are the attacking midfield players. Roon would play in the hole behind Kane . If he is out of form then Jamie Vardy can come off the bench and run at a tired defense or Sturridge is there iof they need an out and out finisher.
The squad does have to be trimmed down to 23
My three to get the axe are...
Henderson, Delph and Townsend... those aren't the ones Hodgson will cut but...
I have taken out three from the midfield pot but I would move Rooney back there
