Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Hello, happy new year one and all. Whether in 2016 or 1900, Watford haven’t generally had the best of times against Spurs. Their list of defeats includes 7-0, 8-1, 5-0, 7-1, 6-3, 5-2 – not to mention 4-1 in the famous 1987 FA Cup semi-final. It’s 23 years since they last beat Spurs – and even that meant the square root of bugger all, because a 3-2 win in the second leg of their Coca-Cola Cup tie didn’t quite compensate for a 6-3 shellacking in the first leg at Vicarage Road.
The teams now gathering in the tunnel at Vicarage Road:
Watford (3-4-2-1) Gomes; Kaboul, Prödl, Cathcart; Zúñiga, Capoue, Guedioura, Holebas; Amrabat, Doucouré; Deeney.
Substitutes: Pantilimon, Sinclair, Ighalo, Kabasele, Mason, Stewart, Rowan.
Tottenham Hotspur (4-2-3-1) Lloris; Trippier, Alderweireld, Wimmer, Rose; Dier, Wanyama; Son, Alli, Eriksen; Kane.
Substitutes: Vorm, Carter-Vickers, Davies, Dembele, Winks, Sissoko, Janssen.
And we're away in the first match of 2017. Let's hope it's a terrific year.
Happy New Year Everyone
I have actually seen this exact fixture many moons ago. I went to Vicarage Road with the Flynn brothers to see Spurs. Their family owned SAFEPAC and lived right next door to the Worlington Hall Hotel.
It’s a grim day in Watford, with rain pelting down. Watford have had to make a last-minute change to their team: Juan Zuniga is injured so Odian Ighalo comes in.
Good morning, UWS - great to have you on board. Nice memory. How was your New Year's Eve revelry?
Both teams are playing a back three, a formation that has come back from the dead in recent years. There are no right and wrong tactics, only fashionable and unfashionable ones. I hate it.
Barely stayed up till midnight... went to sleep
Important implications for your lot with this one. United and Spurs are now level on points, with Spurs ten goals better off. You'd love a Watford win, especially by about 10-0, which would move you up to 5th.
You're an old, old man. ;-)
Good morning and Happy New Year. I have a string pot of coffee that just finished brewing.
I went to bed at 1230 to get up in time for the match. How was everyone's NYE?
Wanyama wins a corner off of Strodl.
Danny Rose , formerly of the LUFC Academy , takes and Cathcart , formerly of the MUFC Academy , heads away
Great anoraking about this fixture. The Hornets have been really stung in this fixture.
NYD in 2002 Leeds were top of the pops
That was the last time Leeds had more points than United
Not good reading here for our Bob
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-4079648/Leeds-United-sat-Premier-League-New-Year-s-Day-2002-homegrown-collapsed-amid-dressing-room-divides-court-cases-managerial-woe.html
eriksen has a shot come off of former teammate , Capoue for a corner. That was definite hand ball. How was that not a penalty . It was blatantly obvious.
Those were the days!
Cheers, MUR - welcome to the LOB 2017 style.
Thanks for the reminder of the whole Majestik nightclub debacle. Let's hope the current LUFC crop can keep their noses clean.
No love lost between Rose and Capoue there.
The only other matches today are a full schedule in the Conference, now known as the National Leaague, Two Israeli Prem matches, and a Welsh Premier League match. Most countries are off celebrating today
Spurs are in total control here. Watford haven’t got going at all in attack.
It is odd to have a couple of matches today and then a full schedule tomorrow. The league seems destined to spread the matches over as many days as possible.
Thanks, Bob. It's the best way one can start 2017. It's already better than 2016. OH!! I forgot ,I have to go back to work tomorrow.
It's an agreement with those evil telly companies. They seem to run the show. Sigh...
You will be interested to read that it finished 1-1 between Western Sydney Wanderers and Perth Glory, presumably around the time we went to bed.
Not the best kickoff to 2017 here, I have to admit.
Not a bad scoreline given that those Aussies were playing upside down!
Oh - how did Danny Rose not hit the target there?!
BOOM BOOM erang Mate!
I don't like the extra man in the commentary box... they just need to shut up!
Neville has something to say about every aspect of the game!
Gone of the days are John Motson, Barry Davis or David Coleman doing the commentating and Jimmy Hill or Brooking saying an odd thing every 15 minutes
Decent effort there from Erickson - just over the bar.
What's up with that I should be asking why was it not further down? Peter Lorimer must be fuming at that effort , thinking about all those hours he invested into training him.
I agree - the "color guy" thing was an American innovation, I believe on Monday Night Football.
Oh - Delli Alle off the bar with a rocket!
Delle whacks one off the crossbar!
Agreed, UWS. You are 100% correct. John Motson and Brian Moore were my favorites.
Kane does one better....1-0 Spurs
GOAL! Harry Kane slots home the first goal of 2017!
Nice ball in to Kane who still had a lot to do to slot it by Gomez at his near post.
GOAL !!! HARRY KANE SCORES THE FIRST PREM GOAL OF 2017. HE'S MY GBB. SUNSHINE WILL BE PLEASED.
This commentator by the way is a big Watford fan
He was featured in the Behind the Scenes at Vicarage Road
Spurs up to third as it stands
Gomes was more like Gomes Addams on that goal as he was too easily beaten at his near post . Peter Drury was correct that this was coming as the Spuds had dominated and Delli had a long range rocket crash off the bar seconds earlier.
I saw that a few weeks ago. To be honest , I think he's been accurate in his coverage. He sure didn't have nearly the journey that the Little Neviller did.
Number One Son has a shot bounce off of Toaster Strodl, go straight up in to the air and easily caught by Gomes Addams. A pun trifecta!
GOAL !!!HARRY KANE AT THE DOUBLE AS THE SPUDS GO TWO UP!
GOAL! MUR's boy Kane at the double!!!
Kane gets a brace!!
Novel idea... decent cross... man inside the six... who da thunk it
Great ball over and Kane somehow contrived to beat the two men marking him to volley home. That's his 10th goal now - he's level with Lukaku. If Watford continue defending like this, he might reach Diego Costa on 14 at this rate.
Did you read about Mariah Carey's troubles for NYE?
Botches her lip-sync performance and storms off stage
It all started when her people asked the organizers...What time does the ball actually drop?
I think Trippier, deputizing , for the suspended Kyle Walker, has bot assists. Nice cross field ball from Delle Alli to Trippier and a superb cross volleyed at the far post by Harry Kane.
I noticed that it. She seemed to be in a real haze.
Yeah - I was watching that one live, switching between the New Year's Rockin' Eve and the CNN show with Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin. It was a shocker, for sure. Lots of clips of it on-line.
The SPuds had trouble defending the free kick until Harry Kane wacked the ball off Deeney for a goal kick./
We watched on ABC and had the same observations.
You'd have to ask Mike for the technical details, but I think that the culprit was the idea of lip synching to backing tracks. Carey couldn't hear because of the ambient sound of the crowd and so couldn't follow along. If she's been backed by a proper band and had done live vocals, she'd been okay.
I wonder how Shadow did with the NYE celebrations? Sparky was shaking due to the neighborhood fireworks, but all the pets are relaxed this morning
Oh - Number One Son could easily have been in for the third. Were Watford's back three out late last night? They're defending like Mariah Carey here!
Number One Son volleys wide off the free kick from Eriksen that was won by Wimmer.
Does Sparky have one of those hurricane hug jackets?
GOAL! There is the Spuds' third one, scored by Deli!
THREE NIL!!!
HOW MANY ARE SPURS GOING TO SCORE TODAY!!!!
GOAL !!! DELE ALLI PUTS THE SPUDS THREE UP.
A horrible moment for former SPud, Kaboul, who made a real hash of pass from Harry Kane, and Number One Son got the rebound off of Cathcart to slot past the stranded Gomes Addams.
Sparky was more like the Hornets back four. Running around all over the place and panicking.
Hoebas receives his ninth booking of the season for a poor foul on Eriksen. It's easy to see why he's the most booked player in the league.
Holebas is booked, his ninth of the season. He's the most booked player in the Premiership. Maybe that's another category we should try to predict?
The most booked player with a real library of fouls and one short of a two match ban.
Into a minute of stoppage time.
A chorus if boos as the Spuds are three up at the half , stinging the home fans.
That's half-time. Spuds very definitely in the cruise zone. Watford are booed off by a fan base that will not have a happy half time. Back in a tick.
I am off for walkies. I'll be back
Before I go, United have won FIVE games in a row... they have risen from 6th in the table to 6th!!!!!!!!!
Enjoy the walkies. Great stat. Keep up the good work.
The second half is underway and it appears that Walter gave his players the deserved halftime hair dryer treatment.
GOAL !!!! BACK WHERE WE LEFT OFF AS DELLE ALLI PUTS THE SPUDS FOUR UP.
Bloody hell - I've barely got back in my chair after some dishwashing at half time and Spuds have scored a fourth!
That's quite some team talk from Walter Mazzari!
Peter Drury believes that Hugo Lloris should have been made to pay for his ticket today - he's been a spectator!
It all started with a long throw by Holebas headed back and Prodl played more like Strodl, gifting possession to Harry Kane on the Spuds right and his pass was tucked away at the far post by Delle Alli.
Agreed with Pete Dreary.
Delle Alli Sandwich must think that mince meat is in his today
Ighalo tries to get Watford going - nothing doing.
How exactly did Hornets players spend NYE? You would have thought with three former Spuds in the form of Gomes Addams, Capoue, and Kaboul, that they would have been up for this. Also given that it's a derby match
Delle Ali has had Younis Kaboul on a piece of rye bread today.
How is the weather ? It looks a lot like Watford outdoors in Harlingen, but probably about 20 to 25 degrees warmer.
BOOM BOOM! I was thinking more white bread since it's soft and mushy , but yours is no disgrace.
Capoue fouls Danny Rose just outside the D in a D minus performance.
Spuds have a free kick now - Kane on a hat-trick. Deflected out for a corner.
The free kick from Harry Kane is finger tipped around the post by Gomes Addams.
Tough match-up for Spuds on Wednesday.
It will be interesting to see whether Harry Kane or Diego Costa score more goals in their match on Wednesday.
Deeney, put through on goal, is erroneously flagged offside. So morally speaking, it’s now Watford 1-4 Tottenham Hotspur.
Dele is pulled off and Harry Winks comes on for him.
Great tackle by Dier on Ighalo
In Longer than the Wink of an eye, Harry Winks is on for Delle Alli . I don't think Hornets players will mind one bit that he took forever to get off the pitch as they would take the final whistle at this point.
Strodl is booked for a foul on Number One Son, but treated him like Number Two.
It appears that the latch match tomorrow between the Hammers and Man Yoo is the pick of the lot tomorrow.
You sort of predicted this result with the fantastic history lesson.
Thanks, mate - Watford are poor starters to New Years.
Why does a Prem have four players on the bench, who have never played a first team match? Is Mazzari stating that he doesn't have confidence in some players in the squad?
A change for each side. Danny Rose off and Ben Davies. Watford bring on a kid, Brandon Davis, to replace Holebas for his debut.
Nineteen year old Mason, is on for a first team debut, in place of Holebas. Ben Davies , a former Garry Monk player, on in place of Daany Rose, formerly of the lUFC Academy.
After this performance, can you really blame Mazzari?
There's a remarkable lack of experience on the Watford bench and I'm not kidding. Why these young Hornets haven't been around long enough to make honey.
Cheers from the home fans as young Brandon Mason tackles Number One Son and clears.
Definitely not ,mate. It will be interesting to see who starts for the Hornets Tuesday in their dead rubber match at the Brit.
Amrabat is down and probably ready to head off for the African Cup of Nations.
Another Watford youngster in the form of twenty year old Jerome Sinclair , is going to come on for Amrabat.
Amrabat wants to be anywhere else right about now. Another change from Mazzari.
Harry Kane won't be getting his hat-trick today. He's rested for Wednesday and Janssen comes on.
Number One Son blasts over after yet another defensive error, presumably showing mercy
definitely. He's being wrapped in cotton wool.
Gomes Addams saves from Number One Son.
Kabesele is on for Capoue, who had a mare against his old mates.
The Spuds have scored four plus goals in four consecutive away matches since October 1960. Why that's back when they last won the title under Bill Nicholson. A great history lesson by Pete Dreary.
Mazzari is doing his contractual duty here, putting on subs. But it's not going to do much of anything.
Ironic cheer from the Watford crowd as there is a shot on goal from their side that Lloris actually has to save.
Ironic cheers from the crowd as Lloris makes his first save of the match as Guediora chipped in a free kick and Lloris saved a volley from former Spud, Kaboul
Lloris getting a little action as he's fouled by Deeney , attempting to gather a cross.
The ref would do well to blow for full time so I can take sparky walkies and because both sets of players are ready for full time.
Great slide tackle by Strodl on Vinny Jansen,.
The spuds will go third in the table , ahead of Citeh and the Gunners, pending the outcome of the Gunners vs Palace.
Three minutes of stoppage time./
Dier concedes a free kick just outside the SPuds box.
GOAL !!!! THE SPUDS LOSE THEIR CLEAN SHEET IN REALLY SLOPPY FASHION.
The free kick eluded everyone as Lloris made a close range save from Kaboul, who on his bum, put the rebound just over the line as a Spuds defender attempted to clear.
It's over as the Spuds sting the Hornets 1-4 on their short journey.
Sloppy at the end for the Spuds but they'll be reasonably happy with that 1-4 result in the end. They're up to 4th temporarily hopping over their cross town rivals Arsenal on 39 points now.
Next up - Arsenal have a chance to jump over Citeh into third.
Off for walkies with Sparky. I will be back in time for the late match just down the road.
I'm back for the late one. What a difference a year makes. At the beginning of 2016, Arsenal were top of the league and Palace were in 5th, four points off the Champions League slots.
Today, Arsenal start in fourth and Palace under Alan Pardew have plummeted down the table. They've got Fat Sam on board now, which probably means Premiership survival. But what next for these two sides?
I am back for the late one
Do I want Arsenal to win and knock City down to fourth or do I want them to keep closer to United
Again, if United get their SIXTH win in a row...they'll climb to SIXTH
Hate all the Americanization of the Premier League... don't need the damn music...hear the crowd roaring, let the crowd sing
I HATE IT
Welcome back, UWS - how was the walkies?
Here are the teams out on the pitch at the Emirates:
Arsenal: Cech; Bellerín, Gabriel, Koscielny, Monreal; Elneny, Xhaka; Lucas Pérez, Iwobi, Sánchez; Giroud.
Subs: Ospina, Ramsey, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mustafi, Reine-Adélaïde, Coquelin, Maitland-Niles.
Crystal Palace: Hennessey; Ward, Dann, Tomkins, Kelly; Flamini, Puncheon, Cabaye; Townsend, Zaha, C Benteke.
Subs: Speroni, Campbell, Lee, Fryers, Mutch, Sako, Husin.
Referee: Andre Marriner
I'm back from walkies with Sparky, fed him, and even had time for a shave
They're off from the EM.
We are off
Chilly wind
Did the dogs enjoy the walkies? Lovely and sunny here in WNY.
Alexis goes on a solo run and wins a corner.
No Mesut Özil for Arsenal today – he’s unwell, so the grapevine tells me – so Lucas Pérez gets his first Premier League start since the opening day. Nacho Monreal replaces Kieran Gibbs at left-back, and Mohamed Elneny is in for Francis Coquelin, who’s on the bench.
Fat Sam makes just one change, with James Tomkins back in central defence in place of Damien Delaney, who is on the naughty step after picking up a fifth booking against Watford.
It's overcast , in the low 70s , and a tad muggy in Harlingen.
Fat Sam should be familiar with Jimmy , who played for him in his time in charge of the Hammers
Fat Sam makes his home debut as Palace manager in a really crucial relegation six pointer vs the Swans. I don't expect anything remotely close to the 5-4 result when the teams last met.
Low 70s! Crikey!
Easy win for Leeds tomorrow?
Shame that Huddersfield play at Wigan and Reading play at Ashton Gate
Still away games for those two and Rotherham at home for your lot
The Gunners main challenge will be to penetrate the yellow vomit wall designed by Fat Sam.
Giroud should have scored there!!
What did he try to do
Ollie miss kicks six yards from goal then El Neny has a shot blocked for a corner. Great volleyed pass by Nacho
Hennessey easily catches the corner.
Palace away kit is sort of traditional with the slash down the front
Pérez, Iwobi and Sánchez are swirling behind Giroud, causing Palace all sorts of problems.
Dave would have easily tucked that away
Why didn't Palace put it in the box!!!!
Definitely a foul
I kind of like the Palace away kit. Much better than the day-glo numbers most clubs run out to sell shirts in the club shops.
Zaha was unlucky to not win a free kick as he was barged off the ball by Lucas Perez near the corner flag. Fat Sam is pissed.
I don't know why Palace players ever play it to Zaha - he's a total waster.
Good point, mate. Fat Sam was singing the tactics: " we all live in a yellow submarine." The Gunners feel that way at this point in time.
Cambridge host Leeds alone on Monday afternoon in the Cup...surely Fox with show it
Xakha Khan has a corner easily caught by Hennessey. definitely off key there.
As usual Arsenal are making some very pretty patterns on the pitch but not really creating clear cut chances.
Alexis was not too far wide with a long range effort.
I should hope so. That's a marquee match-up, that is!
FS1 is showing United vs Reading
Website won't let me go to Monday
I wonder if the Gooner and dad are watching together as lunchtime is approaching.
I'm going to give them a jingle at half-time.
Correct. The Hammers vs Citeh is Friday. We're the early match on Saturday. The 10 Amers are wasters: with Barrow vs Rochdale on FS1 and Sutton United vs the Real Dons on FS2. The late match Saturday is Ridsdale's lads vs the Gunners on FS 1. I'm not rue about the schedule next Sunday
I would not underestimate Cambridge. They held us to a 0-0 draw and and outplayed us at the Abbey a couple of years ago.
GOAL! What a goal from Giroud!!!!
GOAL !! OLLIE HEADS THE GUNNERS INTO THE LEAD WITH A HEADER THAT GOES IN OFF THE UNDERSIDE OF THE BAR
GOAL.... Giroud with a corker!!
Just like MIKI
The Emirates crowd goes "WOW!" when they see the replays.
Pep out of the Champions League places and United breathing down their throat
Miki's was a bullet
This was a lob
NECK not throat
It was actually a spectacular volley from behind off the bar from a cross by Alexis. The move started just outside the Gunners box and after some nice inter play a pass down the left to Alexis resulted in the cross for that great volley.
Miki's was better?
But why did Alexis play the ball behind him - he was the only Arsenal player in the box?
Well stated. UWS. The Gooner mus be going bonkers.
Can't say it was offside....it was a goal...SHUT UP
I think Citeh are now where I predicted them to finish in fifth place. If we win seven in a row will we still be SIXTH? A tough one at the London Stadium tomorrow.
Agreed. There wasn't this much fuss over Miki's goal.
Mark Bright looking rather gloomy on a gloomy looking London Day or is it now evening?
People on the BBC talking about Miki being offside... DOESN'T MATTER
Agreed. It was equally spectacular and should have stood , which was part of stuffing it to Davie Moyes on his return to OT.
Oh - Mustafi was in there but couldn't control it.
I think it was Lucas Perez. Dave would have tucked that away
Davie Moyes claims the loss at Turf Moor was because his team didn't get the rub of the green.
Andy Townsend criticizing the cross by Andros Townsend. A coincidence?
The Nacho is flagged offside after some pretty patters just failed to result in an end product.
Alexis curls an effort wide as Palace have shown nothing in attack.
And I was complimenting Palace's attacking force last week. Townsend, Benteke, Zaha and Cabaye haven't looked as good this week.
Palace's first shot on target is a tame effort by Cabaye straight to Cech.
I think it's the defensive tactics employed by Fat Sam , which will make Palace more solid and they will probably just survive.
The Gunners really should have added to their advantage here. They've had most of the possession.
A minute of stoppage time . Great reflex save by Hennessey from ALexis
Oh - how did Arsenal not score there - Keystone Kops defending from Palace.
The Gunners are one up at the half, but it should be three or four as Fat Sam's sides are known for nicking one on the break as if it were highway robbery.
