The Fifth Round of the FA Cup
I'm starting a three day weekend by watching the Fifth Round of the FA Cup and it starts with none other than Premier League Burnley vs Conference leaders, Abe Lincoln City. The Terriers vs Citeh will be shown at 10 AM and con cluded by Championship strugglers , Wolves vs Premier League leaders, Chelsea.
349 Comments:
It's half a dozen minutes in and the Conference leaders actually had a chance as Muldoon was through on goal , but blasted over.
Joey Barton sure was fouled by the gigantic Matt Reid, who looks even bigger than the jolly green giant . Barton sure looked stunned. .
Arnold wins a corner off of Jon Flanagan from a through ball by Muldoon and the Conference leaders fail to take advantage as the Jolly Green Giant is called for a rugby tackle.
It's a quarter of an hour in and it's hard to tell which is the Premier League side and which is the Conference side. Neither keeper has yet to be tested.,
Power is lectured for a rash challenge on Gudmunsson. The Icelandic international is still down after a powerful challenge from the Irishman.
The free kick is headed down by Michael Keane and Sam Vokes blasts well over.
Not the best start for Burnley as Gudmunsson has to go off and he must be shattered as this was a rare chance to show what he can do. It's like for like as normal starter, George Boyd, is on in his place.
Scott Arfield goes on a solo run down the left and wins a corner. Michael Keane heads wide from the corner.
The first chance of the match as Andre Gray had a shot comfortably saved by Paul Farmer off a cheeky volleyed pass from Scott Arfield
Sam Vokes heads a cross wide as he was well marked by Raggott . Paul Farman was not exactly commanding on that cross. Burnley starting to slowly control this match
Scott Arfield wins a Burnley corner . it's taken short then a wretched cross makes it to the other side of the field then George Boyd trips a defender.
Joey Barton will be soar tomorrow as the giant, physical Matt Rhead, who could make mince meat out of Barton has really put the veteran midfield player through the ringer today
for all intents and purposes, Joey Barton is discovering what it's like to be tackled by an NFL linebacker. Rhead makes Sean Dyche look small.
Despite that Joey Barton had a decent long range volley from a cross that was headed out, comfortably saved by Paul Farman.
Great cross by young Darwikwa, who is getting his chance at right back for Burnley today.
Two minutes of stoppage time.
The closest either team has come to scoring as Michael Keane laid off a pass to Scott Arfield and it was volleyed about a foot overt.
It's halftime and a standing ovation from the travelling Abe Lincoln City supporters as Burnley are being held 0-0 by the Conference leaders and with surprisingly little difficulty.
Morning, MUR - thanks for getting us going today.
I elected to sleep in a bit extra as the Burnley v. Lincoln City tie didn't fire my imagination. But I'm here now for the second half.
From the first half highlights, it appears that Lincoln's strategy in this one has been to kick lumps out of the Premier Leaguers.
Good to see that this has not been a makeshift Burnley side. Sean Dyche is obviously valuing the FA Cup. And why not - they're safe in the Prem but with no chance of reaching Europe.
The second half is underway from Turf Moor.
Lincoln get us underway from Turf Moor. Already, I'm hating the camera angle - it's as if they're filming from a blimp.
Good morning, Bob. Great to chat with you. The Conference leaders have actually played some good football.. The highlights are a bit misleading.
Lincoln keeper Farman was caught by Scott Arfield there as he ran through on to Barton's ball. We'll have a moment's interruption.
Scott Arfield was put through by Andre Gray and there was a collision between him and Lincoln keeper, Paul; Farman.
HIya, David. It's a beautiful day here in Fred-town - chilly but bright and sunny. How about for you?
It's warm and foggy this, but it's supposed to be sunny, breezy , and in the upper 80s this afternoon.
A poor chested back pass by Darikwa nearly put Lincoln in,m but Tom Heaton was out to snuff out the danger.,
OH!!!! The closest Burnley have come to scoring as Barton curled in a free kick and Andre Gray volleyed just wide.
That Barton-Gray axis would seem the most likely for Burnley.
Morning Boys
I have been around and about this morning
I'll be here as much as I can.
I won't be on here tomorrow
I am driving Matt and his friends to Philly...they are flying off to Miami for Spring Break at Siena
I am off this week too.... LOVE THAT!!
Good morning, UWS. Congratulations on your well earned break. I have a three day weekend, but will be on start Spring Break in three weeks.
I am really shocked that it's been a close match. I was expecting all out pressure from the Premier League outfit, but it hasn't worked that way.
Lincoln fans chanting "Who are you?" at Burnley. They might wait to score before doing that.
Morning, UWS - hope you're enjoying the beginning of your break.
This is Lincoln's first trip to the Sweet Sixteen since 1902. They didn't even make it this far all those years in the Football League.
They've got half an hour to try to nick a goal and get to the quarters.
What's this now - Joey Barton has gone down like a sack of spuds claiming that Reed hit him in the face. Nothing in it.
Disgraceful behavior from Joey Barton, who tried to get Matt Rhead sent off by walking into his elbow and then rolling around. He thinks it's funny that he was basically cheating.
Cometh the hour mark....
First change for Lincoln - Muldoon off and Southwell on.
Jeff Muldoon, who caused Burnley a few problems in the first half, is replaced by Southwell.
This is the last round of replays.
Starting in the quarters there are no replays
United got a good result midweek vs St Et but they didn't play that well. When I got home near the end of the first half, the French side could have scored four times
Didn't like Zlat falling down for the pen either
Bob and I are at the chippy right now before going to Portman Road... why didn't you come David!!
Burnley lost home to non league Wimbledon when they were in the top flight in the mid 70s. Will history repeat itself?
Hate that crap from Barton
Why does he get spots on 5Live as a guest...he doesn't deserve it... he's an embarrassment
I agree about the EL match. We should be through to the next round. Thanks for the invite. I will be delighted to join you and Bob.
I'll buy you some chips... Bob is already on his third battered sausage
I agree. Should Barton be suspended as it obviously violates the respect campaign?
Cheers, mate. I love Fish and Chips. One of my favorites.
I'm enjoying a battered sausage right about now. Delicious!
There is Barton acting like an idiot!!
Uh oh - more shenanigans now between Barton and several Lincoln players. He may have to go off now.
it gets chippy and Barton is in the center of it. Southwell was pushed to the deck by Jon Flanagan.
Yellow card for Barton. Sean Dyche should pull him off - he's only going to get worse from here.
Joey Barton is booked. Sean Dyche would do well to substitute him at this point.
Flanagan should have been sent off as Burnley players are having a really frustrating afternoon.
Also a confrontation between the Lincoln manager and Burnley assistant.
Ashley Barnes replacing big Sam Vokes now.
Ashley Barnes is on for Sam Vokes. The running and pace of Barnes is on for the physical power of Vokes.
Darwikwa heads out for a Burnley corner.
Listening to Talksport last night and they were talking how the Cup can get back to where it was
It has never lost the luster for me. I would still love to win the Cup ahead of the Champions League...... and ESPECIALLY a Champions League spot!!
Someone said having the fourth spot in the league play the Cup winner for a spot in the CL
Sorry. A Lincoln corner. It's headed out by George Boyd on the near post.
Sounds like a great idea. Really interesting.
Still 0-0 with about a quarter of an hour remaining.
Strange that exactly thirty years ago these two teams were the bottom two teams in the Football League . Burnley defeated Fawlty Towers on the final day of the season to send down Lincoln. Both teams have gone in opposite directions since then.
Free kick chance for Burnley... Barton better not score
Great anoraking MUR
A decent position for a Burnley free kick. Taken by Joey Barton and headed into the ground and over by Ashley Barnes.
I've heard that suggestion, too, UWS - I support it. Why should the fourth best side in the Premiership get a berth in the Champions League. They're champions of nothing.
Scramble in the box... finally cleared by the Imps
All hands on deck as Farman blocked a close range effort and then at the third or fourth attempt, Lincoln clear.
Joe Ward, on loan from the Seagulls , is on for Hawkridge. I guess Ward didn't play in the victory vs the Seagulls last round.
Bradley Wood heads out for a Burnley corner.
Michael Keane heads just over from the corner from Scott Arfield.
Oh - another close call there. Keene nearly on the end of that corner.
The one problem would be... if the two teams are already in the top 3
If one was. fourth, then it would mean something not having the qualifying round
We're walking down to Portman Road about now, right UWS?
Thanks, UWS. I remembered that event.
If the Cup winner was already in the top three, I'd give the fourth slot to the League Cup winner.
Sounds like a great time to go to PR.
Arfield misses another chance... he had Burnley's best chance in the first half
Only five minutes left for Lincoln to gut this one out and be entered into the draw for the Quarter Finals.
Gray puts through Ashley Barnes, who blazes well over, then Boyd puts through Gray and he fluffs his lines.
Burnley is discovering why Lincoln eliminated two Championship sides.
This would be an impressive result for the Conference leaders considering a good number of Prem sides have come away with nothing
Lincoln have a late corner now. Can they dream?
Kane clears for a Lincoln corner.
The corner comes to nothing - too long. But another corner is coming.
The curling corner is headed out for another.
LINCOLN CITY HAVE SCORED!!!!!!!!
GOAL! Oh my - Lincoln have scored! What a moment for the non-leaguers!
WOW!!!! THE CONFERENCE LEADERS SOMEHOW SC ORE OFF THE NEXT CORNER.
89th minute!!!!!!
WELL OVER THE LINE!
Free header for Waterford there. He knocked it back into the danger area and Raggin nodded home. Heaton thought he'd scrambled it away but the Goal Line Tech shows it was well over.
Joe Ward was unmarked at the far post and headed on the corner that Raggott headed just over the line before it was headed out, but not in time.
Lincoln on the attack again - best form of defense in my view.
Into Stoppage time.
How much time will be added.. the big un is behind.. more time will be added!
Lincoln scored later against Town
Five added minutes
WHY?
Lincoln City fans now singing about going to Wembley. And why not dream?
Lincoln fans sining Que Sera Sera.... they would be only ONE match away from Wembley Way
Will Burnley become the first team to lose at home to a non league team as a top flight team in the Cup? Remember 1975?
They have not been second best at any time this season
Non League quarter finalist since QPR in 1914
Probably the five minutes are for the Barton shenanigans.
The last non league team to make it to the quarters was QPR in 1914, but there were only tow league divisions at that time.
This is the most dangerous Burnley have been all day...why wait so long
Paul Farman rushes out to block from Gray then the corner is headed out for another as Bunley try for an equalizer.
Near post corner...does it EVER work?
Another one... cleared...MORONS
Lincoln would be the first fifth tier team in the quarters.
one added minute left as the keeper shows his skill at the half way line!!
30 seconds
Burnley waited due top ovwrconfidence and it may cost thgem
Lincoln City are into the Quarter Finals - the first big shock of the 5th Round. Marvelous!
FINALLY the ref blows up!!
NON LEAGUE LINCOLN IN THE QUARTER FINALS!!!!
United in the quarters at OT?
IT'S OVER AND A MASSIVE SHOCK AS LINCOLN WIN 0-1 AT TURF MOOR. THE FIRST FIFTH TIER TEAM EVER IN THE QUARTERS.
Burnley didn't put out reserves... give them credit
Burnley lost at home to Wimbledon in 1975 and Lincoln today. Both were the top non league team in the country.
Off to take Sparky walkies ahead of the next match between the Terriers and Citeh
Off for walkies
Ill be back
Next up is Huddersfield v. City. Meanwhile, my eye will be firmly on the activities at our old stomping grounds of Portman Road where Leeds are playing Ipswich.
FOX has gone across the Pennines from E Lancashire to West Yorkshire as the Terriers host Citeh.
The match at PR is a battle of sides knocked out of the Cup by non League sides.
Citeh wearing a similar change strip that Barca did a few seasons ago.
They're off from the John Smith's Stadium
And we're away at Huddersfield in the marquee match-up today.
Payne has a shot blocked for an early Terriers corner.
The low corner is easily cleared.
The team news:
Huddersfield: Coleman, Whitehead, Hudson, Billing, Holmes-Dennis, Cranie, Payne, Van la Parra, Lolley, Quaner, Stankovic
Subs: Ward, Smith, Kachunga, Lowe, Wells, Brown, Booty
Man City: Bravo, Zabaleta, Stones, Otamendi, Kolarov, Fernando, Delph, Fernandinho, Nolito, Agüero, Navas
Subs: Caballero, Sagna, Sterling, De Bruyne, Sane, Iheanacho, A Garcia
Nothing can match the upset at Turf Moor. A genuine giant killing as Burnley had close to a full strength lineup and have been difficult to defeat in the Premier League.,
This match has a lot of potential for an upset. Hudders are a good footballing side and Citeh don't seem to be taking this seriously.
Morecambe and Wise take an early lead at Crawley.
Hudders are in the ascendancy here and they might have scored there. Bravo saves.
Van La Parra shoots straight at Bravo.
Rochdale take the lead vs Charlton.
Rochdale are in front through Niall Canavan at home to Charlton, and it’s a goal at least for Ed Wood at Spotland, who has been on quite the mission of late.
Come on, you Whites!
Hertha Berlin lead Bayern late in the first half.
Wycombe takes the lead vs Dick York
Morecambe and Wise go two up at Crawley.
Oh - Nolito was through on goal but it was well smothered by Coleman.
OH!!!! Navas has a shot cleared off the line after Nolito had a shot blocked. Now Billing clears for a Citeh corner.
Coleman easily catches the corner from Delph, who gets a rare match for Citeh. He will n ot be popular here due to his academy days down the road at a certain club
The Tractor Boys take the lead at PR. Sorry Bob.
Citeh are wearing what must be considered one of the worst away kids ever. It's a travesty.
Bugger!!!
Freddie Sears with the goal. I guess Craftsman products still work.
Evil Cardiff take the lead vs Rotherham
Ex-Hammer Freddie Sears with the goal for Ipswich. Come on, you boys!
It's the same away kit that Barca wore a few years ago. Surely Pep didn't have anything to do with that.
We may need some help from Barnsley against Brighton, Burton against Norwich, and Forest against Not a Big Club today. All of those are at 0-0 right now.
I remember that wretched Barca kit. This one may be worse.
Bradford City take the lead vs Bolton.
The big news: the pundit Robbie Savage just branded the pundit Chris Sutton “a clown” on BT Sport. Robbie should look in the mirror.
The Tangerines take the lead vs Crewe. They really should be a couple of divisions above Crewe.
I am back... Leeds fall behind but tie it up
That is the battle of Non League Cupsets teams
Lincoln knocked out Town and Sutton knocked out United
Agreed. He's a fine one to talk. The Gooner will be pleased with a win at Chris Sutton United on Monday.
I guess Leeds didn't tie up...YET
Welcome back and BOOM BOOM.
My SS link has not sound.. Jeff has the day off apparently
Shout for a pen - but Otamendi did well there.
Bottom club , Coventry ,take a much needed lead vs the Gils.
Bradford City go two up vs Bolton.
Does SS usually cover the FA Cup? I thought they boycotted it.
The Terriers were last in the quarters in 1972, the last time they were also in the top flight.
QPR take the lead at St. Andrews... Zola can't get any time of result
Still 1-0 at PR alas. Come on!
Aguero receives a Billing as he's well tackled.
Zola was a great player, but could it be that like Kevin Keegan and Ossie Ardiles, he's a rubbish manager?
The panel don't follow the Cup games but the scores come in
Bugs me that just because they don't have the rights, they shouldn't pretend it isn't going on...that's what cheapens the competition
Keegan wasn't bad...should have won the league in 96
Leicester have had a couple of half-chances at the New Den.
Lowly Coventry two up already
Maidstone United go three up vs Chester in a match between two Phoenix clubs, but not played at the University of Phoenix,.
Yeah - he had a great side - still couldn't win with them.
What was the name of Huddersfield old ground?
Free kick chance for Terriers.... stupid by Kolovav and gets a yellow
Kolorov booked for a foul from behind after being pick pocketed.
Decent effort.... got a touch somewhere
Corner... stop the presses... a save by Bravo
The free kick from Payne is inches over. The mormal free kick taker is unavailable because he's on loan from Citeh.
BALL IN THE NET..... chalked off.. handball or offside
BUMMER
Hudders have the ball in the net but it's flagged off for offside.
Billing has a goal disallowed for offside off the corner.
Was it London Road?
Norwich one down at Richard Burton
Boro have a penalty that Grant Leadbitter has dispatched. They're 1-0 up over Oxford.
Richard Burton takes a much needed lead vs the Canaries in their efforts to avoid the drop.
Not London Road
Bob?
The first goal scored in the first half of this round.
That's a good result for us. As long as Norwich lose, we stay six points ahead of them in the playoff picture.
Do we want Lincoln and Huddersfield in the last 8 ?
I do
Still no sound for my link...very annoying
Dunno what the ground was, but I can look it up.
The McAlpine Stadium.
Lincoln yes, but the Terriers no. The Terriers are third in the Championship and playing good stuff. That could be a tricky tie.
Wednesday take the lead in a Forest on a Saturday
Oh - I get it - it was Leeds Road. Boom boom!
I know what it is..you don't know?
