The Prem is Back!
Welcome back to your Saturday mornings, chaps - it felt as if that International Break would never end, right? Well, the Premiership is back with a bang. We start early doors with one of the biggest fixtures of the season - the Merseyside Derby. That's followed by the usual 10am EST slate of matches in the Prem and the Championship, including Spurs at Turf Moor, ManYoo hosting the Baggies and Chelski v. Palace at the Bridge. We end with the big one - the South Coast Derby. Just kidding - it's Leeds at Reading for all the playoff marbles in the Championship. So pour yourself a cuppa and join me for all the madness this morning, won't you?

Evertonians using recent history as their guide won’t fancy this one at all. The most recent Merseyside derby, played just before Christmas, was settled by a late Sadio Mané smash and grab. Everton’s last visit to Anfield was a four-goal humiliation in which they hardly touched the ball. They’ve not beaten Liverpool since Roy Hodgson was wedged in the away dugout at Goodison with a confused grin spread across his face: that was seven years ago. And they’ve not won on their arch rivals’ turf since the slap-happy days of Sander Westerveld and Franny Jeffers: Kevin Campbell’s winner was 18 years ago. Eighteen years!
The team news out of Anfield:
Liverpool: Mignolet, Clyne, Matip, Lovren, Milner, Can, Lucas, Wijnaldum, Mane, Firmino, Coutinho.
Subs: Karius, Grujic, Klavan, Moreno, Origi, Woodburn, Alexander-Arnold.
Everton: Robles, Jagielka, Williams, Holgate, Pennington, Davies, Gueye, Baines, Barkley, Lukaku, Calvert-Lewin.
Subs: Kone, Mirallas, Barry, Valencia, Stekelenburg, Lookman, Kenny.
Referee: Anthony Taylor (Cheshire).
Good morning, Bob. Glad to join you on quite a return from the break. Talk about hitting the ground running!
Teams in the tunnel now. Marvelous atmosphere as usual on Merseyside.
There was quite a significant match in the Championship yesterday as Derby defeated QPR 1-0 in Gary Rowett's first match in charge of the Rams.
Morning, MUR - great to have you on board for a big one.
Quite an atmosphere as there always is in the Mersey Derby.
I missed that one - thanks for alerting me to it. Gary Rowett is an interesting choice for Derby.
Thanks, mate. The Mersey Derby was the first match I ever blogged on the LOB and haven't looked back since.
Morning Bob
I thought I was going to be a miss today because Siena were going to have a game in MA today but we are just scrimmaging later on in the day. So, I am here for most of the festivities except when I am on walkies. Poor Shadow didn't get one yesterday. It never stopped raining! Luckily it wasn't snow! Had some overnight Thursday and then it changed to rain and was supposed to turn back to snow.... thankfully it didn't!
Cheers, mate. Glad to help. I guess Wally was rammed out with a some horns up the arse after a run of poor results.
Good morning, UWS. Glad to have you on board. Quite a way to end the international break.
Lots at stake this morning. Liverpool have been in better form recently, with three wins from their last five matches. They would go third temporarily with a win here.
Everton also have three wins from five matches. They start in 7th and would go above Arsenal temporarily with any result this morning. Gunners fans will be hoping for a big Liverpool win.
Morning, UWS - I hope that the weather holds out for Shadow. It's been raining here since Wednesday!
Morning MUR, great to have you aboard
Not good news out of the United camp... Ibra and Herrera still suspended, Smalling and Jones are out 'long term' and Mata just had a groin injury
Will Martial and Rashford both get a full 90 minutes?
Will Shaw get a game with two defenders out?
WBA at home is the type of game we have struggled in this season.... not lost them but dropped two points to too many times
Celtic could not clinch the SPL title yesterday as Aberdeen won at Crocodile Dundee by a walloping 0-7! That's not a typo!
Foeman's comments about his startling choices for today's match: "We have not adjusted a lot. The game plan for today is not changed. Of course the position of Seamus Coleman has changed, and Mason Holgate is starting. And the same thing has happened with Ramiro Funes Mori and Matthew Pennington. The rest is the same. Of course they are two young players, but I am totally confident in them. It is a big day for everybody, but Pennington is doing really well, I am not afraid to start him in this match.”
Thanks, UWS. Hopefully, the rain lets up for both of you.
And after a moment of applause for Ronnie Moran, we're set to go - both sides in their traditional kits. Peter Drury and Jim Beglin on the mics.
They're off from Ann Field.
Barkley says "hello" to Jamie Milner early on.
Sorry to hear about Ronnie Moran. He was as much a legend as anyone at Ann's Field, but without the publicity.
I thought it was quite a rude greeting. The only common link is that both had a spell at ER! Is there anything in that?
Barnsley Wednesday starting right now
That sounds like a feisty South Yorkie Derby. I'm sure Bob will be going for the suburban team.
Definitely have to be a Barnsley fan this morning.
Who do United want to win this?
If Liverpool win, there would be a 7 point gap between United and Pool with United having three games in hand and the gap between United and Everton would be 2 with three games in hand
An Everton win, would leave United on 4 points behind but Everton would jump ahead of United
A draw?
ONE NIL
Nice finish by Mane
GOAL! Mane fires Liverpool into the lead!
GOAL !!!! THE RED HALF OF LIVERPOOL TAKES THE LEAD AS MANE SCORES WITH A GREAT FINISH OFF A GREAT SOLO RUN.
Great stuff from Mane, playing a one-two with Firmino and then driving at the Everton defense. He found a yard or so and fired a left foot shot past Joel.
1-0 Pool!
Mane oh Mane! What a goal! I guess Toffees players were thinking about Anthony Taylor's mention about his Hallmark store getting ready to open.
Pool could have doubled their lead there !
Another Mersey team is in action. as Tranny take an early lead at Wrexham in a Conference match.
Starting early with the puns, eh MUR? Well in, mate - boom boom!
The Toffees trying to work themselves back into this one.
Cheers, mate! It's been a really long break.
According to Fotmob, the website I sent you, United will be on CNBC this morning. The Champions Elect will be on NBCSN.
Did they say that this morning on the the pregame?
Oh - a combination of Joel and Jags clears the ball off the line after Coutinho's curling shot.
Joel Robles parries away a shot from Coutinho that then is headed off the line by Jags to keep the score at 1-0
It has, indeed.
Coutinho makes Joel (Hunter) make a nice save... ball still had to be headed off the line
I did not check, but thanks for the update, UWS.
BOOM BOOM! Nice one, UWS! I'm sure Fat Ronnie would love Joel in the center of his defense at this point in time@
Jags heads into Row M off the corner from Baines, the Toffees first corner of the match.
No rest for the weary! There's a full slate of Prem matches in midweek!
Best line from Joel on the field... London Central in our championship season... we lost our only game to them the day after the prom after the Championship had already been won
London C guy fall in dog shit.... Joel starts telling me all about it laughing away
Barkley is chopped down rashly by Can. Nice free kick opportunity for Everton now.
Emre Can fouls Barkley just outside the Pool, box. Payback for earlier?
United host Everton on Tuesday... that's a big one!
DAMN faculty meeting!
Into the wall by Baines. Trump would have been pleased to see such a red wall.
Great memory, UWS - I remember it well. Do you remember the crazy shot that he took, nearly scoring an own goal? It went off the angle and out for a corner.
Young Tom Davies is the first player booked as Anthony Taylor has had enough.
The free kick from Baines is straight into the wall, after all of that build up from Drury and Beglin.
I do remember that... classic
How did we do in the previous game!!!!
Great stories. I think I remember that match. I was on the JV team that year.
Won 5-4 at Alconbury. Four offside goals scored by the Lancers to clinch the title. Sound about right?
1-1!!!!!
GOAL! Everton are back in it and Pennington, the kid, has bagged it!
GOAL !!!! THE MOST FAMOUS SOCCER PLAYER ON THE PLANET TIES IT UP AS PENNINGTON SCORES OFF A CORNER FROM BAINES!
He'll never forget that moment, scoring for the Toffees in front of the Kop!
1-1!
no... four offside goals by Kevin Collins!
Bob, didn't you set me up for one of my late goals?
Pool players were caught ball watching as the corner came off of Ashley Williams, who didn't seem to know too much about it and Pennington smashed home from close range to score his first ever goal for the Toffees.
2-1.... great goal by the Brazilian
GOAL! That didn't take long! Coutinho fires the Reds back into the lead.
2-1!
GOAL !! COUTINHO PUTS POOL BACK IN THE LEAD WITH A SUPERB CURLER IN THE UPPER 90.
That's what happens when you've got a player who has the ability to take defenders on. England take note.
Modern footballers take note
Before we were interrupted by the goal... did you set me up or was it Stef or both?
Pool now win a corner . Will they extend the lead?
Grimsby vs Donny has kicked off in L2.
Tranny one up at the half at Wrexham thanks to an OG by Marx. It must be Groucho since it's so laughable!
Aberdeen won 0-7 at Crocodile Dundee yesterday, delaying Celtic clinching the SPL title. Ether , the Dons were very thirsty to have gone seven up on the road or when Paul Hogan said there's a knife, it was a flimsy plastic one that broke in some vanilla soft serve,
That's Barkley's fifth or sixth bad foul. He's lucky not to be off. Yellow for now.
Should have been a straight red, in truth.
Barkley's control was atrocious and then he fouls... they had a chance to break
Lovren is hopping around... he is making the most of it
Was a rotten foul
Barkley gets away with a booking after an awful tackle on Loveren. Not sure why he's complaining.
Yeah - I set you up for the equalizer and Stef laid on the pass for the winner, if memory serves.
That's what I remember too
I remember that Collins burned me for pace on one of those goals. I should have chopped him down but he was already in the area.
Managers just need to stop talking to each other..they're such children!
Jurgen Klopp let's Martin Atkinson, the fourth official, have it.
Agreed. That's apart of the game that needs to be eliminated. It's really irritating.
It's too bad Anthony Taylor wasn't officiating that match. You would have got away with just a lecture.
My favorite moment from that match was when we were 5-4 up in the waning moments. The ball ran out of play by my brother, who was home fro college. The Alconbury players all thought he'd stop it and throw it back to them for a throw. But he just let it roll right by him down the hill. Brilliant!
That year, I scored in all the games. I scored more than half the teams goals... but I was never man of the match
Scoring four.. winning the championship...surely MoM... walked in the school... MoM.... Lakenheath Lancers!!
The defense was a paper bag.. a wet one!!
I'm not bitter!!!!
Remember that well... classic Steve move
A pair of minutes of stoppage time.
Great memories. Was Bob MOTM in that 5-4 win?
I can see it as vividly in my mind now, right down to what he was wearing, as if it were yesterday, rather than (cor!) 35 years ago!
LOL! I wish. And I wasn't the MOTM in that season closer at London Central either. Let that Tehrani kid score a hat-trick, although he did elbow me in the face for one of them.
Was he wearing his light blue letter jacket?
HT 2-1 Pool
Poo lead 2-1 at the half in the Mersey Derby at Ann's Field.
That's half time - off for a snuggle with the missus.
I will be gone part of the second half, taking Melanie, who will be volunteering to help at a middle school contest, and Elizabeth grocery shopping.
I'm back for the second half now - it looks like both of you have buggered off. I'll do my best to fly solo here for a while.
I was in the loo!
Can with a naughty stamp on Barkley's arm there. It's getting increasingly chippy out there. I'd be surprised if we end up with the full allotment of players.
DIdn't miss any goals - what happened to the Nocito Curse?!
We could have a couple of Toffees sent off today so they would be out of Tuesday's match
Mane seems to be done, now. Origi will have to come on for him.
Wednesday just took the lead on Saturday
You may still get your wish - Barkley in particular in living on borrowed time with Referee Taylor.
This result would suit both you and the Gooners.
007 in the crowd watching. Wonder which side he's on?
Wouldn't a draw be better?
Holgate fails to get the ball across... these players are hopeless
Origi tries a pop but it's well over. First attempt since coming on.
3-1... great finish again
GOAL! Just as Everton were getting back into this one, Origi seals it!
3-1!
Great ball in from Coutinho and Origi swept it in with authority.
Ashley Williams leaps in and gets himself a yellow.
Water break while Can is being treated. He's coming off; Klavan to replace him. Everton will make a change too.
Can is booked for a studs-up lunge on Gueye. He’s saved a red card by pulling out of the challenge at the very last second.
Sigh... it's snowing here
Still going to take Shad after the match
sneaky hand ball from Milner...learned that at ER
Barkley is bossing the midfield right now. He sprays a pass wide right towards Holgate, whose fierce cross is deliberately top-armed by Milner, to the right of the Liverpool area.
USELESS free kick!!
I just don't get
How are teams so bad from set pieces!
WBA are dangerous... put into a dangerous area with a ball that can be attacked.....they could be dangerous against United today
Shadow can handle a bit of snow on his back.
Coutinho coming off now. Defensive move.
Oh - great stuff from Can down the wing and Arnholt swung a boot at his cross. Saved by Joel.
United's line up
De Gea, Valencia, Bailly, Rojo, Young, Carrick, Fellaini, Miki, Lingard, Martial and Rashford
Still no Shaw or Rooney
Back for the conclusion of the Mersey derby
Not sure United can catch Liverpool or City
They both have had their bad patches
United haven't really had a bad patch. Haven't lost in the league since October at the Bridge... just too many damn draws
Welcome back MUR
I guess the United back line will not be Shawed Up.
Mirallis on for young Calvert-Lewin. Why didn't the Belgian start?
Cheers, UWS
Origi wins a corner off of Barkley that's taken short.
Not a Big Club one up at Barnsley. Bob will not be pleased.
Donny 1-2 ahead at Grimsby as they inch closer to promotion.
Welcome back, mate - this one is over for all intents and purposes.
Good line...he'll pleased with that one if he made it up on the spot
7 or 007
Thanks, Bob. That's my understanding.
Cheers, UWS! I guess he fired in reverse!
Oh - Mirallas did well to work his way through to the box but then leaned back with the shot.
Nice run by Mirallis , but the finish, not so much as it ends up in Row T.
Hoping for a Barnsley goal in short order. A draw would suit me just fine.
Then the Chunk lived up to his name, doing that with a cross intended for Barkley.
I think a Barnsley win would be even better. They're too far behind to be of any bother this late in the season and Not a Big Club could do without any points whatsoever.
Lincoln have bee caught in the league..they could blow automatic promotion
This one is done
I am off for walkies
I'll be back for the 3 o'clockers
TTFN
Into stoppage time as Klavan is on for Firmino , who gets a great ovation. Four minutes.
Cheers, UWS. Catch you later. I have a similar plan for Sparky.
Have a nice walk, mate - don't get too cold.
Lincoln play in the 3 PM matches and have several matches in hand. I am confident they will go up in place of the Orient Express.
Nice and comfy here this morning, but it will be warm this afternoon.
Another big one is Citeh at the EM tomorrow.
Donny 1-3 up at Grimsby.
Flynn and Nunes on the score sheet for Donny.
That's that - Everton have been frustrated once again at Anfield. They'll stay seventh. Liverpool will rise above Citeh into third at least temporarily.
It's over as Pool win 3-1 in the Mersey Derby. Time for Sparky to get walkies.
I'll be back in a tick for the 10 am ESTers.
I'm back now and looking forward to watching United v. West Brom.
Another check on the teams at Old Trafford:
Man Utd: De Gea, Valencia, Bailly, Rojo, Young, Carrick, Fellaini, Lingard, Mkhitaryan, Martial, Rashford.
Subs: Rooney, Blind, Romero, Fosu-Mensah, Darmian, Tuanzebe, Willock.
West Brom: Foster, Dawson, McAuley, Evans, Nyom, Chadli, Fletcher, Livermore, Brunt, McClean, Robson-Kanu.
Subs: Yacob, Morrison, Rondon, Marc Wilson, Myhill, Harper, Field.
Referee: Mike Dean (Wirral)
Of course I'll have an eye on a number of Championship matches ahead of our kick off at Reading later. It seems as if all of the top clubs are playing rubbish opposition today, so it might be a tough day for us.
Brighton are at home to Blackburn, Hudders are at home to Burton, Newcastle are at home to Wigan, and Fulham are away to bottom of the table Rotherham.
And we're away at Old Trafford. United have a tough road ahead - nine matches in 30 days. Whew!
I am back as they kick off around the country
Of course, I am at OT
Back for the 10 AMers. Watching United vs the Baggies on CNBC and Chelsea vs Palace on the PLE goal rush
I'm cock a hoop about the late goal for Barnsley at Oakwell. Final score - Barnsley 1 Not a Big Club 1. Lovely jubbly!
Again... not attacking enough for me.... go for GOALS!
An early Chelsea free kick
The Sideshow straight at Hennessey
Welcome back, lads - this should be an easy peasy win for you lot today. Tougher matches ahead.
The Bees vs Bristol City is BEIN shown on the telly. Bob may want to switch to that one.
We're only three minutes in, lad - be patient!
SS link still has no sound!
Very annoying
GOAL !!!! CHELSEA TAKE THE LEAD.
I know but... WB are going to sit back.. fine... run at them!!
Don't go side to side
Old Trafford is bored
Chelsea already one up
They should just sit back, enjoy their pies and wait for the goals. They will come.
United should not concentrate on either competition.. go for both
Concentrating on the EL is VERY dangerous
United have lost SEVENTEEN points at home this season!!
United would be joint top...or close to even with a normal ToD form
A long Chelsea clearance made it out wide to Hazard , who showed Joe ward a clean pair of heels and his pass was tapped in by Fab from a yard out
Fabregas has scored an early one of for the Blues.
perfect description... tip toeing forward!!
I HATE IT
Thanks, Bob. I'm not sure we can take the Baggies for granted, especially as the speedy Fletch is back in town
I agree - Mou should fire on all targets.
Speedy Fletch? Surely, you jest, mate.
WAY HAY!!!! ZAHA TIES IT UP FOR PALACE
Not sure if this was mentioned but Donny won 5-1 at Grimsby and could get promoted if Stevenage don't get the required result
PALACE TIE IT UP
Oh - Lingard could have opened the scoring there. Early chance.
United have their first shot...United do attack but the ball luckily falls to Lindy...hits it well wide
Lovely!
WAY HAY BENETEKE PUTS PALACE 1-2 UP AT THE BRIDGE
Im watching the wrong match
2-1 Palace!!
I would love to see Chelsea start to suck it up
Wolves have taken the lead against Cardiff in the Championship.
I've tried to log on to the BEIN and it isn't letting me any more
WHAT A BUMMER
Why are we watching this match!!
United are clueless going forward!
Did you try my log-in information?
Chelsea were given a taste of their own medicine as Palace won a tackle by their own corner flag. A long clearance made it to Beneteke, who went on a solo run and played a one two with Zaha, then dummied Courtois and cheekily lobbed it over him into an empty net
I know why I am... so I can get infuriated
Not sure about your reasoning
BEIN is showing the Bees vs Bristol City. Are you sure you want to watch that?
United start slow and keep the same speed
Blow the doors off teams and then rest
79% possession for United means NOTHING
They have created NOTHING
Evil winning in L! as the Fake Dons are two up vs the Gils and the Evil Lions are two up vs Scunny in a match with playoff implications
