A Fascinating Saturday
A very good Saturday morning, chaps. Welcome to another weekend of big Premiership footer action. We get started a wee bit later than usual this morning, due to the four-hour time difference, with Arsenal traveling to the Hawthorns. It's a big day for the Gunners and Arsene Wenger, who's living on borrowed time. We then move on to the regular 3pm GMT kickoffs, including title favorites Chelski at Stoke. Finally, there's a rubbish lower-table fixture between Bournemouth and Swansea at 1:30pm. So, why not tune in to Brighton v. Leeds on BEin. It's going to be a cracker! Make yourself a cuppa and settle in.
620 Comments:
I'm settling in with a cuppa now. Neither WBA or Arsenal is in great form at the moment. The Baggies have found that life ends at 40 points, and Arsenal are enduring their annual spring inquisition. If they lose today, expect plenty more melodrama.
Arsenal start in fifth, some five points back on Liverpool, but with two matches in hand on the Merseysiders. They'll need three points today, for sure. United are now lurking behind them by only a point. West Brom have reached that important 40 point safety threshold but don't have much else to play for.
Morning Bob
I am here
The teams are out on the pitch at the Hawthorns:
West Brom (4-2-3-1) Foster; Dawson, McAuley, Evans, Nyom; Fletcher, Livermore; Brunt, Chadli, McClean; Rondon.
Substitutes: Myhill, Wilson, Olsson, Yacob, Leko, Field, Robson-Kanu.
Arsenal (4-2-3-1) Cech; Bellerin, Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Xhaka; Walcott, Ramsey, Welbeck; Sanchez.
Substitutes: Ospina, Gabriel, Mertesacker, Iwobi, Elneny, Coquelin, Giroud.
Morning, UWS - great to have you on board! How are you, mate?
And we're underway, WBA in their home kit, Arsenal in their tragic away yellow and gray kit.
Jon Champion and Jim Beglin on the mics.
We are off
Don't know why Arsenal aren't wearing red
Is the Leeds match on BEIN? Can I log in and watch?
BTW, it's Leeds v Brighton.... not Brighton v Leeds
Im alright
Had an easy work week because of the snow. Two snow days and a personal day... Monday and Friday... the only two work days! Wish they were all like that
Good morning, chaps . I'm here to join everyone for all the action prior to the international break.
I agree with you about the Arsenal.
I've just checked and the match isn't on. Should be on BEin Express, though. You should be abel to log on and enjoy, though.
Morning, MUR - welcome!
What a great run.... FIND A TEAMMATE!!
Morning MUR
Nyome , the Baggies left back, went on an overlapping run, but nobody was there to connect with his pass across the box.
Oh - great run and cross there by Rondon but no one was attacking it for the Baggies.
Never heard of BEIN Express
Cheers, Bob and Dave.
I think that's BEIN's streaming video.
It's their on-line service. You can just sign in with the information I gave you:
Username: bobdahlgren
Password: Marxman64!
Then you'll have a list of the different BEin channels along the bottom. There should be one on the Leeds match.
United play ion the early match at the Riverside tomorrow. The match of the weekend will be the late one tomorrow between Citeh and Pool.
Goal... the Baggies take the lead
GOAL! Craig Dawson with the easiest of headers from a corner. Very sloppy from the Gunners.
1-0 Baggies!
GOAL !!! MORE MISERY FOR ARSENE AS DAWSON HEADS IN A CORNER FROM CHRIS BRUNT WITH A FREE HEADER.
Great news for you lot - if the Baggies get a result today, you lot could easily end up with fifth at the end of the weekend.
GOAL! Alexis levels it - that didn't take long!!
That didn't take long!
1-1
Sanchez
GOAL !!!!! ALEXIS SCORES A SUPERB EQUALIZER.
Alexis was alone in the box, with Chadli backing off. He rocketed it into the top of the net past Ben Foster.
1-1!
It was a superb piece of skill by Alexis , but poor defending by Craig Dawson, who looked more like Les on that play minutes after scoring. A long possession culminated in Alexis chesting down a pass from the Ox and making a complete fool of the Baggies scorer before thumping in the equalizer.
Alexis is fouled by old man MacAuley and we could do without him trying to get a player booked.
Alexis right in the thick of everything again - the Gunners can ill afford to lose him at the end of the season.
Great defending by Nyom off a cross from the Ox as he's wacked in the head by Bellerin.
Agreed. Also, Alexis should focus on playing rather than officiating. He should be on a hat-trick as his marker is playing like Les Dawson.
Referee is getting a wee bit tired of Alexis yacking at him after every foul.
Alexis needs to shut it as he seems to be begging for an early Easter Card from Neil Sawbrick.
Arsenal are starting to control possession.
The key match of the weekend must be Citeh vs Liverpool. I would think a draw would be the best result even though Citeh must be favorites.
IS Alexis controlling the conversation. Any puns from him?
The Baggies win another corner. They scored from the last one.
The Gunners struggle to clear then Alexis is fouled by Runned On and more complaining.
Now that the planes have cleared overhead, the Hawthorns is mighty quiet.
Just went on your BEIN site and it is Forest vs Derby
Oh - decent counter from WBA through Chadli who found Rondon well. Shot was well wide though.
Runned On had a shot do that as he dragged a shot wide off a pass from Chad Lee On the counter.
Yeah - the Leeds v. Brighton match is on at 1:30pm. It's the late one. I'd be surprised if they didn't have some coverage. Some Serie A match is on the box.
It's the East Midlands Derby BEIN played at 3 PM GST. Doesn't sound too entertaining.
OH!!!! Off the post from Rammsey , then Theo has a several attempts blocked before it's hacked away.
Then Cech superbly turns around a shot from Fletch for a Baggies corner.
Oh - great save by Cech there from Fletcher.
Oh - from the corner, Dawson played a tantalizing ball over that no one attacked.
Jonny Evans heads on the corner from Chris Brunt . It is then cleared, but Dawson cannot find anyone with a decent cross.
Oh dear - Cech has got a problem now. Not sure what happened. He'll need to come off.
Cech is down... Looks like he is done
Horrible news for Gooners as Cech seems to have pulled a muscle . Will that be it for him? Ospina may be forced to come on.
David Ospina will replace the big Czech goalkeeper.
Forest have taken the lead at the County Ground
Warburton, their new manager, has made a difference!
Warburton was great at Brentford and almost took them up. Bought up Rangers too but then canned
The Clough derby going the red
These two teams won 3 out of 10 Championships in the 70s...how times have changed
Great anoraking. It's no longer a big derby.
McLean is booked as he took Alexis to the cleaners.
No anoraking here
Champions of the 70s
1970 Everton
1971 Arsenal
1972 Derby
1973 Liverpool
1974 NO COMMENT
1975 Derby
1976 Liverpool
1977 Liverpool
1978 Nott'm Forest
1979 Liverpool
Sanchez is limping to the touchline after that tackle, which wasn’t the best. I suspect he’ll be okay for the second half.
Three minutes of stoppage time.
The half-time whistle sounds - neither side will be entirely satisfied with that, but it's particularly bad for the Gunners.
It's 1-1 at the end of a feisty half.
Certain teams will always be big teams in my book. I know that's not the case for you two plonkers
I guess it is the time you grew up but not always(Wed were pathetic in the 70s)
Right now, Chelsea are so big but they have only been BIG since the Russian millions came in. They won one league, one Cup and were up and down between the two leagues.
I consider Leeds a big club... from a big City
I consider Sheff Wed a big club..from a big City... They are Sheffield's big team... bigger than United
Wednesday are the Villa
United are the Brum
We're back on at the Hawthorns - no changes to either side.
The second half is underway from the Hawthorns
Neither Sheffield side is a big team, in my reckoning. There are lots of big cities in England who don't have big clubs (Bristol, for example).
Back from the loo.. missed nothing?
I agree with Bob. They can't be a Big Club since they haven't won the League Championship since 1929. The Tractor Boys, the East Midlands Trio , and Blackburn have won the title since then. They may have been big in the past, but not now. Sheffield is a populated city where the fans follow the teams more to avoid boredom than anything else.
Bellerin wins a corner off of Liverwurst.
HGal Robson-Kanu, the Baggies super sub and Welsh hero from the Euros, is on for Runned on, who seems to have run his course.
Rondon is pulled and goes straight down the tunnel. Is he injured - or just arsed off?
I hate both of you
GOAL! Cor - Robson-Kanu has just come on and he's put the Baggies back into the lead!
GOAL !!! A REALLY SCRAPPY GOAL BY HAL-ROBSON KANU A MINUTE AFTER COMING ON TO GIVE THE BAGGIES A 2-1 LEAD.
WBA take the lead again... Ref talking to linesman
It's a goal!
The sub scores right after coming on for the Welsh Wizard
McLean was on side for the first run and then just let the ball in thru his legs... smart play
McLean was definitely in an offside position but avoiding touching the ball as it rolled in. I don't like that interpretation. If a player is off, it's offside.
Now Arsenal have to chase this one again. They started with a very attacking side so it's hard to imagine them going more attacking than they already have.
Blackburn tie it up vs Preston
Good news for Our Bob. Preston are close to the play offs
McLean made a run down the left and passed to Chad Lee, whose chipped pass over the Gunners defense resulted in a horrible misunderstanding that confused Ospina and Robson-Kanu snatched in the loose ball.
Mustafi ties to chip Foster from distance. Lands on the net.
Of course, Wenger is still having a moan at the fourth official about it. Never mind that his keeper totally coughed up the ball.
Jose is annoying me as of late with his comments and complaining. He said we'll probably lose at Boro... great managing!!
It was almost pantomime time at OT on Thursday handing out bananas saying the players were exhausted... it was a training ground match... where both teams played awful!
Too much complaining. I agree with Roy Keane
City vs United midweek April 27
Also, much needed for Blackburn after being dragged back into the relegation zone thanks to that big win by Bristol City yesterday and Forest leading as well.
Olivier Giroud to make his requisite substitution appearance.
Thanks for the update. I was wondering when the Manc Derby was going to be played.
I guess Jose is going bananas
If United don't follow Jose's orders to lose at Boro and actually win... United would over take the Gunners and be 3 points behind Liverpool with a game in hand with Pool visiting City
This one still not done
Theo coming off then. Not a great week for him.
Ollie on for Theo as the Gunners go more for power and height.
oooh, Off the crossbar from corner
Oh - off the bar!
OH!!!! Nearly Desmond as Mustafi has a header come off the bar from the corner.
Arsenal need two goals in this last twenty five minutes.
If the scores stay the same and Everton beat Hull at Goodison... Everton would be equal on points with Arsenal and ABOVE United if they lose
Do Everton have a shot at Fourth
oooh, Aspina goes walk about and WBA had a few chances to extend their lead
OH!!!! Hal- Robson Kanu nearly scores on a Baggies break then Chad Lee has a the rebound cleared off the line as Ospina was horribly out of position.
I don;t see the Toffees finishing in the top four . They're eight points behind.
Wellie wins a Gunners free kick.
Free kick chance for the Gunners... straight into the middle
Useless effort
Horribly into the wall by the Ox , whose free kick looked like it was taken by an Ox.
Claudio Yacoub on for Brunt to add some defensive steel to the Baggies midfield, which is something the Gunners lack.
I don't really see Everton having a chance of making fourth. It'll be one of United, Liverpool or Arsenal.
Will Shadow hang on for another 20 minutes before a walk
Will Arsenal use the international break to sack Arsene and bring in someone to manage the last quarter the season so that they ensure European football next season?
GOAL! Dawson again! 3-1 Baggies!
GOAL !!! 3-1 BAGGIES AS DAWSON HIS SECOND OF THE MATCH THE SAME WAY HE SCORED HIS FIRST. AN ALMOST IDENTICAL HEADER, WHICH WAS ALSO SCORED FROM A CORNER.
3-1!!!
Looks what happens when you get the ball over the first man's head and have players running into the box
Crazy lack of marking there - are Arsenal doing zonal from corners?
Shadow may have a better chance of hanging on than Arsene!
It doesn't get any easier for the Gunners as they face Citeh once the international break is over.
I know it won't happen but....
United win the Europa League they will qualify for the Champions League
Leicester City win the Champions league they will qualify for the Champions League
Fourth place.... would NOT qualify for the Champions League!
Derby County have tie it up early in the second half
That's a crazy scenario, mate.
Iwobi on for Alexis, who is booed off the field by Baggies fans. Alexis then with words for Arsene.
If it happens then fourth wouldn't qualify because a maximum of five teams per league is allowed in the CL.
I know but... Leicester eek by Atletico
Bayern, Real, Juve, Barca knock the stuffing out of each other and two drop out
Leicester get Monaco in the semi
Then a one off game
Yup that's why I said NOT
Now Arsene has decided to take off his most potent goal threat - Alexis. Why?
Cursing in the streets of Alex?
Stupidity
I don't get modern day managers
I'm surprised they don't try and get more subs to use... players are too tired!
Derby have turned it around inside 10 minutes of the second half
2-1 Derby
Derby have come from behind to take a 1-2 lead at the City Ground. Derby lead in the derby.
Took the Rams 8 minutes to so twice
As things stand, Forest is being sucked in to a relegation scrap.
More bad news for Forest
Blackburn have comeback to take the lead vs Preston
The away fans starting to head for the exits. It's been a poor day out in Brum for them.
They have been char broiled in the Black Country for sure.
Nice one, MUR, but I'm not sure that Gooner would enjoy that joke.
Eighteen year old Sam Field is on for Chad Lee , who gets a standing ovation.
Cheers, mate. We're becoming a bit unpopular on the LOB?
What do you think about the Wenger situation?
He changed the Arse. The won the title 3 times in 98, 02 and 04
Finished to runners-up to United so many times
Three minutes of stoppage time as Craig Dawson has been named MOTM.
Three minutes of stoppage time now but in truth this one was over the moment that Craig Dawson's second header went in.
West Brom move consolidate their position in 8th, still four points behind Everton but miles ahead of Stoke in 9th.
I would have hated Fergie to leave under these circumstances
He should have have left after a Cup win... maybe he can do that this year
I feel for Arsene because he's a legend at the club and it's a sad way to see him being treated. He probably should have resigned as a hero a couple of seasons ago.
So, what do you lot make of Tony Pulis - good Premiership manager? Or waste of space?
The anti-Wenger banners are coming out again.
I always want Pulis and Big Sam be relegated
Wenger should retired two years ago like Fergie did. Now he's going to have to suffer the indignity of a sacking rather than having an upstairs role at the club. Sad.
He's a good manager for certain situations, but will never manage one of the top teams. He has plateaued with the Baggies.
Full-time: 3-1; a real blow to Arsenal and Wenger.
It's all over
Not a good day for the Arse
I am off for walkies... Shadow has been a trooper
It's over as the Baggies thrash the Gunners 3-1 and the case for Wenger to be sacked strengthens.
I'm off to the loo and walkies with Sparky on a warm, muggy morning.
Back from walkies, fed the pets, and ready for the 3 PM matches
It finished Desmond in both Champions ship derby matches:
Blackburn vs PNE and Forest vs Derby
I'm back for the 11am EST kickoffs. It's Stoke v. Chelski on the box. Here is the team news:
Stoke City: Grant, Bardsley, Shawcross, Martins Indi, Pieters, Allen, Cameron, Walters, Sobhi, Arnautovic, Berahino.
Subs: Muniesa, Whelan, Afellay, Adam, Diouf, Given, Crouch.
Chelsea: Courtois, Azpilicueta, Luiz, Cahill, Moses, Kante, Matic, Alonso, Willian, Costa, Pedro.
Subs: Begovic, Fabregas, Zouma, Ake, Loftus-Cheek, Batshuayi, Chalobah.
Referee: Anthony Taylor (Cheshire)
NBCSN is televising Stoke vs Chelsea as they're off from the Brit.
I am back from walkies as they kick off at the Brit
I have the Hammers vs the Foxes on Extra time and the Prem goal rush on the other channel.
Pompey visiting Stevenage... 6th v 3rd
Cambridge visit lowly Cheltenham
I think this is Shakespeare's first away match in charge of the Foxes. I guess the acting troupe is travelling for the first time.
GOAL !!!MAHREZ GIVES THE FOXES THE LEAD AT THE HAMMERS
Again, an Everton win would take them above United and equal on points with Arsenal
Of course, now that Ranieri is gone, Mahrez is back in the goals. What a treacherous bastard he is.
That goal seemed like it was meant as a cross, but they all count. Was that in the script according to Shakespeare.
Yes - but United have two matches in hand even before kickoff. You lot are in pole position now.
GOAL !!! RUDDY NORAH!!!! EVEN ROBERT HUTH SCORES AS THE FOXES ARE NOW TWO UP.
Somewhere, Claudio Ranieri is shaking his head.
TWO NIL LEICESTER
Straight from the training ground as Albrighton played a one two off a short free kick then whipped in a cross headed home by Huth
They need a win... they haven't won away from home all season and still only three points out of the drop zone
Everton take the lead
Another Foxes free kikck, but Andy Carroll heads away the free kick from MAhrez.
Leicester have leapfrogged Bournemouth into 14th on that scoreline.
I was watching the match at Goodison but turned it to Goal Rush and just now saw the goal
I like this channel except it is the only channel not in HD... how spoiled am I?
United are now down to seventh....at least we've moved away from sixth...been there since October
Diego Costa now in the midst of some argybargy - big surprise there.
Two Toffees teenagers combined for the goal as Calavert-Lewis scored his first for the Toffees, sliding in to connect on pass from fellow teen, Tom Davies.
I am just as spoiled and loving every second of it.
Toffee's manager is complaining about Lukaku not signing a contract and may not play if his mind isn't fully with the Everton...well... you better not bugger off to Barca or keep your trap shut
GOAL! Willian scores the opener for the Blues at Stoke!
Marcus Alonso wins a Chelsea free kick and
GOAL !!!! WILLIAN SCORES FROM THE FREE KICK AS LEE GRANT WAS BEATEN HORRIBLY AY HIS NEAR POST.
Champions Elect keeping rolling alone
1-0
Awful goalkeeping!!
Why can't keepers play that bad against United?!!!
Grant won't want to see that one again on the highlights reel - really poor effort from the Stoke keeper allowing the free kick from Willian to creep in his near post.
Cambridge already one up
Ranieri is realizing that the Foxes players have improved because Shakespeare is having the players rehearse.
Wee Joe with a requisite booking as he fouled Pedro.
Pompeys' match at Stevenage seems like the MOTD in L2.
Hard to remember now that Joe Allen was a young bright prospect at Liverpool.
It goes from bad to worse for the Hammers as Winston Reid seems to have twisted his ankle and will need to be replaced.
Costa with a requisite booking as he reacted to a challenge.
Snoddy on for the injured Reid. Where will he play as Slaven will appear to reshuffle things.
Three quick goals at Loftus Road
Hosts lead bottom club 2-1
The Bees really stinging as they take the lead at Richard Burton and QPR lead all but doomed Rotherham 2-1.
GOAL !!! LANZINI PULLS ONE BACK FOR THE HAMMERS
It was a superb curling free kick that left Kasper rooted to the spot.
What match are watching?
I have goal rush and they are just showing it now
Gret free kick
Two quick goals at Bramall Lane as it's 1-1 between the Evil Blades and Charlton
I'm watching both goal rush and the match from the London Stadium with the PIP option. That match is on Extra Time.
Stevenage take the lead vs Pompey in that playoff six pointer. Sorry UWS
Bugger
Argyle take the lead vs Morecambe and Not Wise while the Tangerines take the lead at struggling Newport County
Ipswich take the lead in Wales
Richard Burton ties it up vs the Bees.
Richard Burton with two quick goals a they come from behind to lead the Bees 2-1.
Alonzo with a chance... great save
Stevenage now two up vs Pompey. Sorry, UWS.
