Oscar Night Live!
Evening, folks. I hope you'll join me throughout the night tonight as we enjoy the annual Academy Awards show. I lot of people dismiss it as a load of tosh, but, as a movie fan, I always get excited about seeing the big film night with all the stars on show. Jimmy Kimmel is the host and there will likely be a few anti-Trump barbs to cheer on. Let's be having ya!

Sad news today out of Hollywood about the loss of actor Bill Paxton, who has died at age 61.
I really don't go to the movies. Jacquelyn and I watched Suicide Squad on Labor Day, but otherwise did not go to the movies this year.
I read about Bill Paxton's passing . Sad news indeed.
Can't believe that Bill Paxton is gone. A heart procedure that went bad. Hello chaps.
Thanks for asking, I'm wearing Levis, an Izod pullie, and slippers by Dearfoams.
Good evening, Gooner. How have you been? I'm wearing a tank top and shorts.
Very sad news about Bill Paxton.
Before it gets too far, because of the critical backlash of what to me was a perfectly enjoyable movie which reminded me of the wiz-bang romantic movies of the 40's and 50's that I grew up watching with Mom, and the attempts of the critics to frame the people who liked it as dim, I'm going all in on La La Land. I know it was a trifle of a story, and that there was precious little jazz from Gosling, but it transported me from the opening the end credits, and I felt better on the way out than on the way in. I hope La La Land cops everything including a controversial win for Best Animated Feature, and best Foreign. Give those know it all revisionist critics something really to howl about.
You wear it well, Al-Prez.
I will be rooting with you for La La Land.
Cheers, Gooner. I'm dressing formally by my standards for this special occasion.
Welcome, Gooner. I hear you on "La La Land." I just saw it recently and I enjoyed it. The backlash seems to contain an unhealthy #Oscarssowhite element, where "Moonlight" and "Hidden Figures" and "Fences" is being pitted against it.
I don't think "La La Land" is the best movie of the year, mainly because the two leads aren't strong enough singers/dancers for my taste. They were cast for their star power but it marred the film a bit. But I love Damien Chazelle's work and it'll make a smashing Broadway musical at some point.
Justin Timberlake is opening the show with his number from "Trolls." Didn't see that film, of course.
You ever wonder what the camera is doing when you've got a really good dancer, but you end up looking at Harvey Weinstein's gormless children?
And color me disappointed that it wasn't Riyannah in that red dress.
Jimmy Kimmel emceeing?
Justin now introduces Jimmy Kimmel, tonight's compere.
Three-piece Tuxedos suck
Jimmy's going political right from the off.
Great Trump remark by Kimmell.
My favorite tux so far tonight is the combo smoking jacket/tux number worn by Terrence Howard from "Empire." Snazzy!
Nice joke about Chazelle's age matching the number of Oscar nominations.
I don't care for the three piecers either.
More political satire from Kimmel. An immigration reference?
Bit of a dig on Viggo, who I like a lot. Shame on you, Jimmy.
3rd cut about these movies not having an audience. Redeemed by the joke for Meryl
Meryl Streep has 20 Oscar nominations - cor!
None too shabby , considering he called that lackluster.
Pretty good dig at the Tweeter in Chief there.
Best Supporting Actor goes to ....
He's not Tweeter Dee ; he's tweeter dumb.
Hoping the bloke from Manchester by the Sea gets this one - he was brilliant.
Strong category here.
Good start for Moonlight - could be a sign of things to come with the backlash against La La Land cursing it.
It goes to Ali , not Alli , for Moonlight.
That Manchester kid was great, but the campaign behind Ali was irrepressible
I haven't had a chance to see Moonlight yet but I'm looking forward to seeing it.
Touching story by the new papa.
Nice one.Love his reference to the media banned from the Prezes press conference.
Kate McKinnon and Jason Bateman doing makeup and costumes now.
Now for best Makeup and costume design. The one movie I saw this year: Suicide Squad. It gets the nomination.
"Suicide Squad" and "Fantastic Beasts" pick up those two technical awards. Didn't see either of them.
Best Costume Design goes to Colleen Atwood.
Dr. Strange named Sec of HUD? Could that be?
Great tribute to the heroes who pioneered the NASA program.
Hoping for a big win for "13th" in this one.
It'll probably go to the James Baldwin one, though. Or maybe the OJ one.
OJ Made in America wins Best Documentary.
I watched a few of the OJ docs and they were really good.
Lin Miranda is up next with his tune from "Moana." DIdn't see that one either.
Nope, me neither. This is a bit rubbish, no?
Ha, one of those sails smacked her in the head
She's a pro!
Good evening, Betsy. How have you been?
Doing well, David. You?
Hiya, Bets! Great to have you on board tonight.
Doing well. Thanks for asking.
I agree with the Gooner - this Oscar ceremony has been a bit flat so far.
Do either of you have access to Amazon Prime streaming? There's a laugh-out-loud spy caper called Patriot which is the funniest thing I've seen in ages. Eric and I love it. Check-it out.
I just read that Neil Fingleton from Game of Thrones passed away.
The Ellen pizza gag was better.
Thanks for the tip. I don't have Amazon Prime. I can only handle so many entertainment platforms.
Love the comment about handing out the awards by parachute!
Sound Editing, in case anyone cares.
Getting worried that the La La Land haters have the fix in
"Arrival" wins that one - any of you see that one? I have an allergy to all things sci-fi.
It certainly seems that way, Gooner.
Sylvain Bellemare wins the award for Sound Editing.
Magnifique! Loved the accent.
After Sound Editing comes Sound Mixing.
Tres Bien.
The award goes to the crew of Hacksaw Ridge.
"Hacksaw "Ridge" wins a technical award and the Mel Gibson rehabilitation project continues.
Didn't see it either.
A lifetime of rehab won't be enough for him.
Best Supporting Actress category now.
It goes to ...
It strikes me that Viola Davis is really one of the leads in "Fences."
Viola Davis wins Best Supporting Actress for her role in Fences.
Shame - Michelle Williams was brilliant in Manchester. Oscar goes to Viola.
Viola!! Our girl from Central Falls, RI!
Very competitive category. Kidman was the only dud.
I even heard that Nicole wasn't bad in "Lion." Haven't seen it yet.
During the break I switched to my bathrobe -- It's a plaid fleece by Christian Dior.
Best Dressed Blogger goes to the resident Gooner.
Foreign Film now - hoping Ove can pull this one out.
Best Foreign Language Film goes to The Salesman from Iran.
Nope - I'm batting zero so far tonight. Shocking performance from me.
El Prez is ecstatic.
The Chief Tweeter is even dissed by foreign film makers.
Der Stingelhoffer with his nominated tune now.
Best Oscar for Animation.
Piper wins the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film
I saw this short animation on the CBS Sunday Morning show this morning - nice one!
Nice anti wall statement. Well done.
Next Best Animated Feature Film.
Zootopia wins the award.
Production Design - might be a chance for La La Land to get one here.
First one for La La Land then. Well deserved.
La La Land wins for Best production Design. Our resident Gooner will be delighted.
Silly stunt now with people on a tour of Hollywood.
Led by the Minister of Silly Walks. Endorsed by the Very Silly Party.
This is why this show doesn't end by 11pm. Where's that band when you need them to start up?
Complete waste of time.
Well, I'm off to bed, folks. I've got an early morning tomorrow. Nice chatting with you!
Tarah!
Good night . Great chatting with you.
That's all from me too. Cheerio Al-Prez.
