Good morning, Bob. Thanks for getting us started as we face a double header today. This should be the match of the day, especially in this neck of the woods.
Mexico vs Portugal is being played in Kazan while Cameroon vs Chile will kick off from the Spartak Moscow Arena.
Welcome, MUR! A very happy Father's Day to you. I hope you're enjoying the day. Thanks for joining me.
Enjoying the pre-match coverage on Fox. They've added Ian Wright, Wright, Wright to the mix. This could get interesting.
The teams now out on the pitch enjoying the anthems:
Portugal
Patricio; Cedric, Pepe, Fonte, Guerreiro; Carvalho, Andre Gomes; Quaresma, Moutinho, Nani; Ronaldo.
Mexico
Ochoa; Salcedo, Reyes, Moreno, Layun; Dos Santos, Herrera; Guardado, Vela, Jimenez; Hernandez.
Thanks, Bob. It's been a great start to Father's Day . Glad to have you around for the festivities. Ian Wright should be an improvement over Lexi and Co.
Some Mexican fans paid a pretty penny to make the trek to the interior of Russian interior.
Oh - I hate this commentator. Really rubbish.
It will be an interesting contest between Osorio and Fernie Santos, two master tacticians.
Sorry to say Fox has the rights to the next three World Cups, so we are somehow going to have to get used to this.
A moment of silence for the victims of a massive fire in Portugal.
I remember meeting up with a group of Mexican fans going to Italy v. Mexico in Oita, Japan during the 2002 World Cup, which Gooner and I attended while I was living over there. I think we in this country get used to thinking in terms of rural and working class poor Mexicans who come to this country, but these were extremely wealthy people from Mexico City who could afford to fly around the world supporting El Tri.
Cristiano is freshly scorned for this match, without the usual floppy do.
The big Argentine referee gets the match underway from Kazan.
Mexico in all white and Portugal clad in al maroon.
That's a fairly accurate assessment, mate.
The laziest Gooner of all time fouled by the laziest United player of all time time as Nani fouled Carlos Vela just outside the box.
Into the wall by Guardado and off Diego Reyes for a goal kick.
Free kick chance for Mexico now....
Terrible free kick really hyped up by this terrible commentator. Get the hook!
Quiet early stages, like two boxers very tentatively testing each other out with jabs.
Nani is down and the replay showed it was an elbow from Herrera. El Tri did the same thing a week ago vs the U.S.
Bit dirty from El Tri.
I agree with Cobi and the other commentator that Mexico and Portugal must be the favorites to advance from Group A.
Mexico wins the first corner of the match.
Head tennis off the corner then Moreno is flagged offside.
Quaresma not too far off with a long range effort.
Quaresma tries a pop from distance. You would think that it had hit the crossbar from the reaction of the commentator but in reality it trickles well wide.
Guardado fouls Quaresma from behind about thirty yards from goal
Into the wall by Skippy.
GOAL !!!PEPE GIVES PORTUGAL THE LEAD.
GOAL!
Or is it? The referee has called back play and is consulting the video evidence.
It may not stand as the ref signals for a video replay, which will be utilized this tournament.
No. It's disallowed for offside.
After checking the replay, I had a difficult time seeing where there was offside. After the free kick went into the wall, Skippy had a shot crash off the bar. Joao Moutinho scored with a great shot in the corner. I'm guessing that Pepe was judged to be offside, but he seemed on and not involved with the play.
I thought it was a good goal, honestly. Portugal really pouring it on now.
Great block by Ochoa for a Portugese corner.
A horrible corner is out for a goal kick.
So much for accuracy from the video replay. At least the decision was given quickly.
Chicharito has been a ghostly presence on the pitch, hardly in the match. Not a sniff.
Chicha clipped from behind by Andy Gomes.
Carlos Vela gets it over the wall, but just too much curl and it goes wide.
Nice pics of your Father's Day brekkies. Looks hot down there in Harlingen!
Thanks. Yes it has been a scorcher for the past week.
Ochoa does well to acrobatically tip over a deflected cross.
GOAL! Now it is 1-0! Really unselfish play by Skippy.
GOAL !!!!QUARESMA GIVES PORTUGAL THE LEAD AFTER SOME MAGIC BY SKIPPY, WHO LAID IT ON A PLATE FOR HIM.
Carlos Salcedo misjudged a long diagonal ball from the back and Skippy had acres of space. He dribbled then passed through three defenders in the box for Quaresma to finish easily past Ochoa.
Oh - big chance for Chicha there with the header. Tame effort.
The first chance of the match for Chicha as Carlos Vela got free down the right . He cut in then put in a cross with his left foot . Chicha headed into the ground and it was easily caught by Rui Patricio.
Oh - Quaresma nearly adds a second. Just shanks his final shot wide after he'd worked his way into a great position. More poor defending by the Mexicans.
OH!!! Just wide by Quarema, who again was set up by Skippy.
GOAL! Chichi strikes! Great enterprising header!
GOAL !!! CHICHA TIES IT UP WITH A WELL PLACED HEADER.
Kate is hating this commentator as much as we are. She's really fed up with him.
Hey guys
I am around...sort of... I am so fed up with these commentators... I HAVE TO MUTE!!
Is there a way we can complain?
Happy Father's Day David
It came from a throw off the left . A cross from Jimenez was misjudged by the Portugese defense and as the ball bounced , Carlos Vela lobbed in the ball for Chicha to easily head in the corner.
Good morning , Dave. Wishing you a very Happy Father's Day as well.
Chichi blows a big, big chance well over the bar there after Vela had set him up nicely.
Hernandez should have scored his brace there
Into a minute of stoppage time.
Happy Father's Day, UWS! Great to have you on board. Couldn't agree with you more about the commentary.
Half time
It's 1-1 at the end of a first half dominated by Portugal.
What are we going to do next summer... this can't be what we have to put up with
This gooooooooaaaaal guy is probably just there because it is Mexico but still!!
I want to complain
Agreed. The commentating is really obnoxious.
The next game is on FS2...not even on HD
Bob and Dave will you be around for the late match? I should be.
The second half is underway from Kazan.
Ian Wright, Wright, Wright wasn't impressed by that first half. I wasn't either. Two goals but not a lot else. We're off for the second half.
A poor start to this tournament with one and a half unimpressive matches.
Dangerous cross in from Guardado but no one was on the end of it as usual.
Useless free kick from Guardado.
Do you lot miss Chicha?
Jimenez has a shot deflected for corner.
We could use him now. He had an excellent first season with us then seemed to fade away.
Gio 2 Saints on for Carlos Vela.
Johnny Two Saints coming on for a second half cameo.
I like how UWS is just posting empty comment boxes now. Are you that bored with this, mate?
Fernie One Saints makes a double substitution . Bob will not be pleased to see Gelson Martins on for Nani. Adrien Silva on for Moutinho. Both subs from Sporting Lisbon, the main club that supplies players to the national team.
We are in danger of being lulled into a siesta.
Nani is dead to me - he had a chance to come to Leeds and but decided to go to Turkey instead. Pfff....
There has not been one single booking this tournament. Are you surprised?
Now he's in Spain playing with Valencia. He must have been feasting on Thanksgiving leftovers.
The Two two Saints brothers are the fifth pair of brothers to participate in the Confeds Cup. The Laudrups were the first in the 1995 tournament.
Elbows Salcedo off and replaced by Nestor Arujo.
Salcedo coming off now - the back four being reorganized.
Adrienne Silva becomes the first player of the tournament booked, for a lunge on Gio 2 Saints.
Layoun, ho plays in Portugal with Porto, curls the free kick over.
Guardado clips Skippy just outside the Mexican box.
Peralta on for Jimenez now. Attacking move.
The final roll of the dice from Osorio as Jimenez is replaced By Oribe Peralta, a striker. El Tri now back to playing with two strikers.
Quresma with a powerful half volley straight to Ochoa.
The match has finally opened up as Johnny 2 Saints shoots wide from a narrow angle.
The final roll of the dice from Fernie 1 Saints as Quaresma , the scorer, is replaced by Andy Silva
Lovely save by Ochoa there to save Mexico.
Superb save by Ochoa from a header from Andy Silva , that was headed for the corner.,
GOAL!!!! PORTUGAL TAKE A LATE 2-1 LEAD.
GOAL! Poor defending again allows Cedric to nip in at the back post and bulge the old onion bag.
2-1 Portgueezers.
Another video review.,
Oh - Chicha whiffs on yet another chance. Not his day.
End to end stuff now - Portugal so close to their third goal.
The move started with a long Mexican clearance collected by William Carvalho, who passed to Skippy , who passed to Gelson Martins. His pass was not cleared by Hector Herrera and Cedric of the Saints scored with a deflected effort.
Just wide by Martins with just Ochoa to beat,
Mexico wins a free kick
Into stoppage time. The free kick from Arujo was curled in and deflected for a Mexican corner,.
GOAL! DESMOND ARRIVES!
GOAL !!!! DESMOND IN KAZAN AS ORIBE PERALTA HEADS IN A CORNER FROM JOHNNY 2 SAINTS OFF THE INSIDE OF THE POST.
Hector Moreno nods home from a corner.
2-2!
I'm driving Kate crazy with my "GOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLL" celebrations.
Andy Gomes presumably has talked himself into the booked. It was actually Moreno with the goal.
Rather naughty, mate!
It finishes Desmond in Kazan . I will be around for the late match
Full-time. 2-2 in the end. Not a bad ending to the match.
Cameroon vs Chile kicks off from the Spartak Moscow Arena
OH!!!! Chile attack from the off . Vargas with a shot off the post then off the keeper's hand for a corner.
Another great save by Ondoa as a Chile player flicked the ball over a defender's header then Ondoa did well to push away his shot.
Great skill by Fuenzalida.
Herrera does well to kick save from Bassagog with the rebound cleared for a corner after Gonzalo Jara coughed up the ball.
Ngadeu of the Montreal Impact heads over from the corner.
A correction. He plays for Slavia Prague.
Vidal fouls Djoum near the left touchline. Great play by the Hearts player. Ngadeu heads in the free kick , but the whistle was blown before he headed the ball in. The goal will not stand.
Tambe wins a corner off of Medel
King Arthur Vidal puts through Vargas , who finds Row H with just the keeper to beat.
Aboubakr battles to win a Cameroon corner. The corner from Moukandjo is headed wide by Anguissa
GOAL !!!! CHILE TAKE THE LEAD IN STOPPAGE TIME. IT'S THAT COMBINATION OF VIDAL AND VARGAS AS KING ARTHUR PUT THROUGH VARGAS, WHO SHOT PAST THE ON RUSHING ONDOA.
The goal is disallowed due to video review . looking at the replay, Vargas appeared to be level. Chilean players are furious, especially, Vidal, as it's 0-0 at the half.
The second half is underway.
Anguissa goes on a solo run down the left and Herrera pushes away his whipped in cross for a corner that is sent straight to Herrera.
Chilean fans are delighted as Alexis , who was supposed to sit u the match due to injury, is on for Puch , who was basically a spectator this match.
Leo Valencia is on for Feunzalida, who nearly scored in the first minute, but was quiet since then.
Abubakr goes on a solo run and is then fouled from behind by Jara, who is booked for that
A decent free kick from Moukandjo is not too far over.
Vargas has a shot deflected for a corner.
The final roll of the dice from Juan Antonio Pizzi as Francisco Silva is on for Aranguiz.
Isla heads wide from the corner from Leo Valencia.
GOAL !!! VIDAL HEADS CHILE INTO THE LEAD WITH ABOUT TEN MINUTES REMAINING.
Bassagog immediately wins a corner for Cameroon.
Back to the goal. Beausejour sent Alexis down the left. His cross was headed away . Alexis got the ball back and crossed to Vidal , who headed well past Ondoa.
Isla has a cross cleared by Mena for a Chile corner after Alexis made a run down the left and found Vidal, who found Islas.
Alexis heads wide from the corner taken by Leo Valencia.
Four minutes of stoppage time.
Vargas has a goal disallowed for offside the second time this match
It was a Chilean counter as Alexis got a long ball from the back , went on a sol run, rounded the keeper then had a shot blocked, but Vargas smashed home the rebound.
GOAL !!!! AFTER VIDEO REVIEW THE GOAL STANDS AS THE OFFSIDE WAS OVERRULED AND IT'S NOW 2-0 CHILE WITH ALEXIS ASSISTING ON BOTH GOALS.
It finishes 2-0 to Chile thanks to two late goals.Alexis coming off the bench completely changed the match as he assisted on both goals.
That's it for me.
CHEERS!
