Russia 2018 - Day 8!
A very good Thursday morning, everyone! Just last Thursday morning, we were anxiously awaiting the opening ceremonies and first match. Now we're deep into the tournament and certain patterns are beginning to emerge. This morning, we jump into Group C action, first with Australia v. Denmark. That's then followed by group leader France taking on Peru. Finally, we finish the day with the marquee match-up in Group D between Argentina and Croatia. I'll look forward to the pleasure of your company.

I'm putting in an appearance at work this morning after a week out for the World Cup. So I'll be monitoring the match on the Guardian blog and will comment when I can.
Good morning, Bob. Sorry you won't be around.Hope to chat with you later today
The teams now coming out:
Aussies - Ryan, Behich, Milligan, Sainsbury, Risdon, Mooy, Jedinak, Rogic, Leckie, Kruse, Nabbout.
Denmark - Schmeichel, Stryger, Christensen, Kjaer, Dalsgaard, Sisto, Delaney, Schone, Eriksen, Jorgensen, Poulsen.
Morning, MUR - I'll be back home for the France match. Looking forward to it.
They're off from Samara
Cheers, mate. Looking forward to it.
Robbie Kruse with an early foul
The free kick from Eriksen is headed wide.
It's off of Mark Milligan for a corner. Sisto gets the corner short and it's headed wide by Delaney
Early pressure from the Danes, eh?
The Aussies win a corner and Matthew Leckie heads over off the corner.
GOAL !!!ERIKSEN SMASHES HOME A GOAL FOR THE DANES.
There was head tennis of a Danish throw and the ball broke to Delaney , who laid it off for Eriksen to smash it past Matty Ryan
This should take the pressure off the Danes.
Christiansen clears for an Aussie corner.
Matthew Leckie heads wide from the corner taken by Aaron Mooy.
Aaron Mooy called for a foul on Sisto.
Great defending by the Bees Dalsgaard on Robbie Kruse of Bochum. Championship triumphs over the German second tier on that challenge.
Delaney fouls Robbie Kruse.
Rogic, of Celtic, wide with a long range effort.
OH!!! Nick Jporgensen with a rocket of a header in the six yard box heads wide off a cross from Yousef Poulsen
Behich with a nice piece of skill fools a Danish defender as that leads to several crosses being headed out off a spell of Aussie Pressure.
Christiansen blocks from Robbie Kruse off a pass from Leckie then Mooy had a shot blocked.
Robbie Kruse wins a corner off of Lasse Schone
Nice corner from Aaron Mooy and acombination of Robbie Kruse and Mark Milligan heads down and straight to Kasper.
Now the ref is using VAR to see if there was a hand ball. Called on Yousef Pulsen , who was called by VAR vs Peru. It is . Poulsen booked and misses the next match. The right call.
Just checking in on the match again and I see that Spurs favorite Christian Eriksen has put Denmark 1-0 up and that there is a VAR check right now on a handball incident.
Jedinak to take as he did vs France.
Wow - penalty for the Aussies! Might be a life line for the Socceroos.
GOAL !!! 1-1 JEDINAK SCORES FROM THE SPOT AS HE DID VS FRANCE, SENDING KASPER THE WRONG WAY
Correct, Bob. Both Aussie goals penalties due to VAR
Robbie Kruse just fails to connect on the cross from Rogic.
Now the Danes win a free kick just outside the box. Eriksen will probably float in a cross.
Eriksen fizzes it in on the ground. Comes off of Trent Sainsbury at the far post and into the arms of Matty Ryan
Stryger-Larsen called for a foul on Robbie Kruse.
Remarkable! The Aussies must love the telly then.
A pair of stoppage time minutes
LOL! It should be on their flag.
It's 1-1 at the half where the Danes threatened to run away with the match early on, but the Aussies finished the half the stronger team. Should be an interesting second half.
Half-time: 1-1. It sounds as if it's been a rough and rugged first half of World Cup group stage football. Denmark have the quality, especially through Eriksen, but the Aussies are always game for a contest and fought their way back into it.
That's an accurate description. It's been competitive.
Second half underway
The Aussies needed 22 matches to qualify, travelling a total of 155,000 miles. WOW!
Josh Risdon, the only Aussie starter, playing in the Aussie league, with a wayward cross.
Poulsen wins a corner off Milligan
Sounds like the Aussies have had an exhausting schedule!
Briathwaite ,on for Poulsen , who is suspended for the next match
Correct, mate. Sounds rather grueling.
A draw would be an interesting result here, as it would keep Australia's interest in this tournament. That's only fair as I think they were hard done by in the first match against France. If the French defeated Peru this afternoon, they'd be all but through to the knock-out stages, Denmark would be on four points and the Aussies would have one point. And Peru would be heading back to the Andes.
Kasper misjudges a cross from Mooy and Robbie Kruse drives a cross through the box that's cleared by the Bees defender for a corner.
OH!!! Mooy has a long range effort inches over.
Each side with a substitution. The Danes replace Nick Jorgensen with Andres Cornelius while the Aussies bring on the youngest player in the tournament., 19 year old Daniel Arzani, the A League's Young player of the Year. The Iranian born layer shows a lot of potential.
Both sides with long range efforts . Rogic has his easily saved by Kasper while Sisto was just wide for the Danes.
Andrew Nabouut down for the Aussies, claiming an injured shoulder. That's what it is.
He's replaced by Tomi Juric as he was against France.
Accurate description, Bob. The Aussies would have a must win vs Peru. France and Denmark would be in a great position as we expected.
Young Arzani show his skill. He keeps the ball in play, turns a defender and fizzes a pass across through the box and nobody is there to connect
The final roll of the dice from Bert as Jackson Irvine of the Tigers on for Tom Rogic of Celtic. Irvine born in Aberdeen.
Delaney called for a foul on Jackson Irvine and Sisto talks his way into the book over that decision.
Under ten minutes left to play now. It sounds as if the Aussies are the most likely to break the deadlock now.
OH! Arzani has a shot beaten away by Kasper then Leckie has a volley into the ground easily saved by Kasper. Nice run and pass by Bejic
Arzani goes on a run thought he was fouled by Delaney , but the ref waves play on
Eriksen with a long range volley
A triplet of stoppage time minutes.
Bejic heads a long Danish free kick out for a corner that had been headed on by Milligan
The corner from Zeriksen makes it to Braithwaite, at the edge of the box, as he shoots straight to Matty Ryan
Braithwaite flagged offside.
It's over as the Aussies surprisingly hold the Danes 1-1.
Next is the other Group C match , which will be France vs Peru
I really enjoyed reading your comments on that one. I'm about to cycle on home to enjoy the other two matches today. Cheers!
Team news for that Group C clash:
France: Lloris; Pavard, Varane, Umtiti, Hernandez; Pogba, Kanté; Mbappé, Griezmann, Matuidi; Giroud
Subs: Mandanda, Areola, Sidibé, Rami, Mendy, Kimpembe, Nzonzi, Tolisso, Lemar, Fekir, Dembélé, Thauvin

Referee: M Abdulla (UAE)
Back for France vs Peru. Will it cagey as has been the pattern for the past few days? Will it be open and attacking?
I’m home now; teams in the tunnel.
Thanks, Bob. Glad to help. Looking forward to the pleasure of your company.
If France wins then they're in and Peru will be out earlier than expected.
Looks like both teams going with pretty much unchanged lineups.
It’s gratifying to see that Deschamps is releasing the hounds today, with three strikers up front. Maybe responding to criticism at home?
Dembele and Toulisso replaced by Matuidi and Olly as stated by Derrick Rae.
Justified criticism. Glad to see he's not being stubborn.
Peru have Guerrero back in the fold.
According to Derrick Rae, it's in the 50s and overcast in Ekaterinburg where they're underway.
Les Bleus get us underway in Ekaterinburg.
France undefeated against South American opposition since losing to Argentina in 1978. Have they really faced that many South American teams since then?
Peru with the early possession.
Carrillo down for Peru and back up. Played this past season fir the Hornets , but will now play for Benfica.
Hard to say, but that is an impressive record.
Peru with a chip from the halfway line, trying to catch Hugo off his line, but well off target
Kelly is talking out of her arse, as usual. Both these teams are attacking. Really? The three French strikers are all similar? Really?!!!!!
French not out of first gear yet.
Carrillo skins Hernandez down the wing but his ball in was overcooked.
Actually a seven match undefeated streak. Three wins and four draws.
Pogba with a speculative effort.
Pogba not too far off with a long range effort.
Agreed, Bob.This match is starting to put me to sleep. As I type France wins a corner.
Interestingly, Giroud seems the lone striker with Greiezmann and Mbappe dropping deep.
Poor corner headed out for another. Varane leaps and heads wide from the next corner.
Oh - free header for Varane! Put it wide!
In that seven match undefeated run for France vs South American teams , three of the past four have been 0-0 draws. The one that wasn't was a 1-0 win in the 2006 quarters vs Brazil. I I guess expect a low scoring match
Matuidi booked for a foul from behind on Advincs.
France starting to ramp it up. Griezmann produces a sharp half volley that the keeper blocks out.
It's really a must win mach for Peru. Even a draw doesn't help them too much as the Aussies are not pushovers.
Pavard called for hand ball off a cross from Carillo just outside the box.
A foul called off the free kick, which is a complete waste
Satellite issues...now back on.
Guerrero’s picked up a nonsense yellow card.
Paulo Guerrero has talked himself into the book. Must have said something to Umtiti. A dumb way top get booked. Advincs wins a Peru corner.
True - a draw merely prolongs the inevitable.
Flores well wide with a long range effort.
Hope everything works out. I had those yesterday during the early match
However, a draw here for the French would really start the inquests.
Seems okay now.
Pogba is playing far too deep- really another defensive middie alongside Kante.
Halfway through this first half and only that one Mbappe shot on goal to show for it.
I don't think Deschamps is in trouble with a draw because they'e all but through. France started with two draws in 2006 and made it to the final. it would be more from the journalists tan probably the federation.
Like yesterday, a really dull match
Better from Peru as Lloris makes close range block from Guerrero.
Oh - Guerrero is in and pulls a great save out of Lloris
Mbappe fails to make decent contact on a great pass from Pogba and gathered by Gallesse.
I’m okay with it; as with the Spain match, the tension is seeing if Peru can hold out.
GOAL !!!MBAPPE GIVES FRANCE THE LEAD WITH KIND OF A SCRAPPY GOAL
GOAL! Mbappe with tap in, after Giroud’s shot was saved.
Pogba won a tackle just outside the Peru box and put through Olly , who had a shot deflect off of a defender, wrong footing Gallesse and Mbappe had an easy tap in at the far post.
Now then, Peru will have to chase this one; as you say, it’s a must win.
Peru ,like Morocco , could be eliminated with two 1-0 defeats despite playing two decent matches.
Peru up against , basically needing two goals against a pretty solid defense.
Nice ball from Pogs on that goal.
France break and the final pass for Olly was just too long as Gallesse rushed out to gather.
Agreed. A nice tackle as well. We need more of that for United.
They have had chances .
Gallesse with a close range block from Lucas Hernandez then the rebound is wide. Nice possession. Good one touch passing
Into stoppage time.
The later match between Argies and Croatia should be key. Argies could be right up against it if they don’t win big.
A pair of those minutes
Iceland vs Nigeria would be key if the Argies don't win.
France one up at the half and looking in control.
That’s half time then. Satisfactory from the French.
Steven Tyler with a halftime change as the second half kicks off.
Peru start the second half chasing this one.
Umtiti down as play stops.
Elizabeth thinks he looks more like someone from Black Sabbath.
Play resumes.
OH!!!! Aquino with a long range effort off the corner off post and cross bar that bounces off for goal kick. Better from Peru
Mbappe fouled by Jefferson Farfan
Oh - Aquino hits the angle!!
Do you think Steven Tyler is happier with Peru's start to the second half?
CArrillo with a foul from behind on Lucas Hernandez.
Carrillo and Hernandez have been at each all day.
Steven Tyler of Aerosmith?
Pogba wins a corner off a run and pass from Hernandez
Gallesse struggles with the corner but Peru clear it away
Correct. The Peru manager is Steven Tyler's long lost twin
Carrillo flops down, looking for a penalty. The ref is having none of it.
Ah - sorry, you lost me there. He’s got half an hour to rescue the campaign.
Carrillo over with a long range effort off a nice one touch possession.
The Manager for Peru looks just like Steven Tyler.
Correct about half an hour for Peru to salvage this tournament.
Advincs cuts in and is not too far over with a long range effort.
Umtiti clears for a Peru corner.
A downpour has begun.Hope the satellite doesn't go out
That sure was a short shower. Looks as if the satellite will be fine.
The pressure from Peru has somewhat subsided- they need some changes.
OH!!! Nice Peru move. The ball was played out wide to Farfan. He put in a cross and Carrillo volleyed into the side netting from a narrow angle.
Mbappe takes forever to come off as he's replaced by Usman Dembele.
Mbappe, the French goalscorer, comes off.
Olly attacking near the corner flag. Several passes later it's passed all the way back to Lloris.
You’re right about the Peruvian manager - dude looks like a lady.
Griezmann replaced by the Faker.
Fekir to come on for the ineffectual Griezmann.
Flores booked for Peru
LOL! His team is Going Down!
Aquino booked for Peru
VAR sorts out that yellow for Aquino.
Olly heads down a long diagonal ball and Dembele drags a shot wide.
RuiDiaz on for Cueva, who missed the penalty against Denmark.
If Peru scores right now, he’s gonna feel a Sweet Emotion.
Guerrero wins a corner off of Pavard. Untiti heads away the corner.
Agreed and then some.
Elizabeth thinks he looks more like Alice Cooper. I disagree.
Pogba picks up a needless caution.
Pogba booked for a high boot. That seemed kind of picky.
it's about 35 yards from goal.
He’s definitely a heavy metal fan, that’s for sure!!
The Free kick from Guerrero is straight to Lloris.
Guerrero with a backpass to Lloris,
The final roll of the dice from Deschamps as Pogba is replaced by Nzonzi, a more defensive minded player as France try to see this one out
Stephen Nzonzi on for France for a late cameo.
A quartet of stoppage time minutes
Four minutes to play here.
France win a late corner as they aim to run time off the clock.
A free kick near the corner flag is headed out and Matuidi is wide with a long range volley
Olly has a shot blocked for a corner in the final seconds
That’s it then. France progress on to the knockout round with a pedestrian performance, while Peru are heading home.
That's it as France hold on to defeat Peru 1-0. France advance and Peru are eliminated.
I’ll be back in an hour.
Off to a tutoring job. May be a tad tardy for the late match
Back for the preliminaries ahead of the Argentina versus Croatia match this afternoon. I really get the sense that this match could provide one of the big upsets of this tournament. Argentina were completely toothless in their opening and counter with Iceland, And Croatia must be licking their chops at the defense of changes for today.
The teams gathering in the tunnel now:
Argentina: Caballero, Mercado, Otamendi, Tagliafico, Salvio, Mascherano, Perez, Acuna, Messi, Aguero, Meza.
Subs: Guzman, Ansaldi, Biglia, Fazio, Banega, Higuain, Di Maria, Rojo, Lo Celso, Dybala, Pavon, Armani.
Croatia: Subasic, Vrsaljko, Lovren, Vida, Strinic, Rakitic, Brozovic, Rebic, Modric, Perisic, Mandzukic.
Subs: Livakovic, Corluka, Kovacic, Kramaric, Jedvaj, Bradaric, Caleta-Car, Badelj, Pjaca, Pivaric, Nikola Kalinic, Lovre Kalinic.
Referee: Ravshan Irmatov (Uzbekistan).
Teams coming out now.
Just about ready to get started in Nizhi Novgorod.
Croatia get us underwear are you wearing all black; Argentina in there familiar blue and white stripes.
