A Late Start to a Busy Day of Sunday Football.
Due to the time change in the U.K. the matches start for the majority of us at 10 AM. The opening act starts with the Toon vs Wolves on NBCSN at 10 AM. There are three matches kicking off at 12:30 PM with the match of the weekend being a repeat of the CL Final as it's Pool vs the Spuds on NBC. There's also the Gunners vs Palace on Gold as well as the Canaries vs United on Gold. Championship fans will be interested in two matches today, which is the South Wales Derby as the Swans host Cardiff as well as Bristol City vs Wigan. Make sure to be around for an action packed Sunday
548 Comments:
The Swans are one up vs Cardiff with about a quarter of an hour remaining, moving them up to fourth. Three more Swans goals would move them ahead of Leeds.
Bristol City vs Wigan just kicked off. Bristol City moves up to second with a win. Bob will be interested to note that this is not idle gossip.
Celtic is up by a Barber Shop Quartet at Aberdeen. Rangers kick of vs Motherwell at 11. As things stand , Stevie G's lads would go top with a win by five goals or more.
Morning, MUR - thanks for getting us going this morning. I had a lovely lie-in this morning after a late night out in Buffalo. Looking forward to all of the footer this morning.
Morning boys
Rotten rainy weather here in ENY
NBC have missed the tunnel action and walk-out as usual these days. But here are the teams:
Newcastle United (3-4-3): Dubravka; Fernandez, Lascelles, Clark; Yedlin, Longstaff M, Longstaff S, Willems; Almiron, Joelinton, Saint-Maximin. Subs: Darlow, Krafth, Dummett, Shelvey, Atsu, Gayle, Muto.
Wolverhampton Wanderers (3-5-2): Rui Patricio; Doherty, Coady, Saiss; Traore, Dendoncker, Moutinho, Neves, Jonny; Jimenez, Jota. Subs: Vallejo, Pedro Neto, Cutrone, Ruddy, Ruben Vinagre, Kilman, Ashley-Seal.
Refereen: Kevin Friend (Leicestershire)
Not sure if I will be able to comment on the late matches... I will have the United match on a full screen on my computer AND United will annoy me too much!!
Will they score ANOTHER goal today!
Remember, if United score today it will be their 2000 PL goal
It's over at the Liberty and the Swans defeat Cardiff 1-0 to move to fourth behind Leeds on goal difference
Good morning, Bob and Dave.
We are off at SJP
Toon vs Wolves is off from SJP
And we're away at St. James's Park, Wolves for some reason wearing green today. Not sure how orange would clash with black and white stripes, but whatever.
Cheers. Glad to help. Went on a long walkies with Sparky on a lovely sunny morning
Agreed. I can understand them changing shorts, but not shirts.
I guess you could say their black shorts would clash... still hate this stuff
Joao Moutinnho with a volley straight to Dub
We can't go for walkies... weather not allowing it
Thomas turned 27 today...can't believe it was so long ago!!
Celtic win by a Barber Shop quartet without reply .All the goals were scored in the fist half. Rangers vs Motherwell kicks off at 11 and Stevie G's lads will go top with a win by five or more goals.
Happy Birthday, Thomas. Hard to believe he's already 27
The Longstaff brothers appear to be in the heart of the matter for the Toon today. Already local heroes.
Newcastle have the ball around the box... but never get the ball in the box!
They get a free kick...will they finally kick it in the big rectangle
They did and almost scored... stunning revelation... get it near the goal and something might happen
I understand, Dave. We got those days during the winter and it can be frustrating
Morning, UWS - please pass my best on to Thomas.
There was a lot of rain last night for my drive home from Buffalo.
Of interest to Bob is Bristol City vs Wigan . Still 0-0 about ten minutes before halftime
I don't mind walking in the snow but rain!!
Also pass my best to the birthday boy as well.
Agreed, Dave. Definitely not fun at all.
Jonny wins a corner off of Fernandez
Jonny wins the first corner of the match for Wolves.
Lascelles was having a strong word with Kevin Friend and now he's slumped to the ground. Not sure what's going on with him.
Bob, wonder what you thought of my FB post. It's as if you have ESP with Sparky and Fred
No walkies for me either. I've got a load of grading to do. Might venture out in the car to pick up a few provisions later. Tomorrow is supposed to be nicer.
Me either. Lascelles did not have a a "friendly " conversation with the ref.
Bob will not be pleased that Bristol City has taken the lead vs Wigan. Andreas Weimann with goal. Sad to say that's not idle gossip
Bristol City up to second, Leeds down to fourth
Almiron clears a cross from Traore for a Wolves corner. The Toon counter, but Almiron wins a Toon free kick
Jota down for Wolves
This looks serious as he's not moving
WAY HAY! Wigan ties it up at Ashton Gate late in the second half
Alan Shearer commented earlier that Joelinton (whose name he of course butchered) is the only real goal threat for the Toon. Doesn't say a lot for his confidence with Almiron, who Newcastle paid a lot for this summer to bring him in from the Atlanta MLS side.
Sorry. Late in the first half
Not sure what the Longstaff brothers are discussing
Wondering if their mum did the laundry or not?
Almiron has provided chances , but has fallen short in that he was expected to be scoring goals and has yet to do so. I think he's still adjusting to the Prem
LOL. That's a great question, Dave
Terrible defending there by the Toon... big center back wins it and then blows it then falls over to get a foul
Jota back up and running with a full head of steam. He has shook off whatever was Ayling him
I reckon that that should have been a Wolves corner. Lascelles was merely trying to obstruct Jota while allowing the ball to run out of play. Came off him last.
It's 1-1 at the half at Ashton Gate. Bob must be content with that. Leeds remain third.
Not happy at all with that Bristol City goal, but not entirely unexpected.
I'm surprised Wolves is permitted to wear all green. Doesn't that clash with the Turf?
LOL! Nice one, MUR!
Actually, Wigan came from behind on the road. A draw is a decent result that would keep Leeds third ahead of the West London Derby tomorrow.
Cheers, Bob. The old gold not looking so bad.
Most teams...including United... don't go out to score goals and win games. They go out to not lose
I HATE IT
1-1 would be a great result for us there at Ashton Gate.
United ladies go two up vs the Reading Railroad ladies late in the second half. Ozzy says they;re riding the crazy rails.
Both of these teams seem to be going for it, though, right UWS?
It is NOT the most exciting league
It used to be the best because of the speed and power...now it's like the old Italian and Spanish leagues...possession possession possession...pass pass pass
The MOTD in women's footie is the Gunners vs Citeh. It's 3rd vs 1st.
The Prem is not as exciting as in the past, but still better than other leagues based on recent matches I've watched from those leagues. I can usually only take fifteen minutes of those matches
"promising" "better"
Ball never went anywhere near the goal
It is a library
That's unusual for Toon fans, but definitely true
Newcastle with a chance to break....useless pass
The Toon counter off a Wolves corner than let down by an atrocious pass.
Docherty fouls St. Simone and Newcastle have a free kick in a good cross position on the left.
United Ladies ride the crazy rails to a 2-0 win vs the Reading Railroad.
Longstaff found big Joelinton in the box but he couldn't get over the ball.
The Longstaff brothers not living up to their name as they're playing on a short staffed team
Almiron....sidenetting
Oh - Almiron was in there and showed some good pace but could only find the side netting. Poor first touch let him down.
A great chance to score his first goal and give the Toon a much needed lead and into the side netting with just the keeper to beat
I don't know about that pun, MUR. Not sure.
That reinforces what Alan Shearer was saying about him
That's better....running FORWARD into space...shot blocked
St. Max with a long range effort blocked then Longstaff with a long range effort blocked for a corner
Two corners... ball never made it past the front post!
GOAL!
Toon take the lead
Longstaff with a short corner after an atrocious short one then
GOAL!!!LASCELLES GIVES THE TOON THE LEAD
GOAL! Jamal Lascelles opens that scoring with a towering header at the near post.
Stunning what happens when you put in a decent cross!!!
Just noticed it is 1-1 at Ashton Gate
The goal came off that short corner from one of the Longstaff brothers and a poor giveaway from Jota after a tackle on St.Max. The cross from Longstaff was headed away and Fernandez crossed for Lascelles to score with a header
I mentioned the score at Ashton Gate earlier
United now down to 16th!!
Two spots and two points away from the drop zone
Definitely a must win at CR. I guess it can be called a relegation six pointer. If United win it would be the second consecutive Canaries home match that the away team would be ending a winless away streak
Most of what has been good for Newcastle has been going through St. Max. Joelinton can't really complain about lack of service from him. He's teeing them up time and again.
Long may it continue to be 1-1 at Aston Gate. Great result for us.
Our United not the only United having trouble scoring. The Toon have yet to score more than goal in any match this season. Both manages by former United players
A pair of stoppage time minutes
Wigan take the lead at AG
Leeds have QPR, another tough match against a promotion rival, at Elland Road next Saturday. Let's hope that the Plus shows it.
WAY HAY! Wigan takes a 1-2 lead at Ashton Gate
Sorry the score didn't stay the same Bob!
Last chance for Wolves with this free kick.
Not a great delivery but Jota had a go on the turn.
Bristol City down to 7th. It's that tight at the top
HT at SJP
The Toon one up at the half
The second half is underway from SJP
Is anyone going to give Brucie any credit for being above United and Everton in the table
This match definitely has the feel of an undercard match.
I'm fairly happy with the scores in the Championship right now.
Bob owes a special thanks to Cheyenne Dunkley for scoring both Wigan goals.
Traore wins an early corner in the second half for Wolves.
Kieran Clarke Shoes tackles Traore for a wolves corner
Yes, I do. Ta very much, Cheyenne - whoever you are.
Agreed, Bob. This is definitely the opening act
Cheyenne is actually a central defender who previously played for Oxford and Kidderminster Harriers
A Pre Saiss tackle for a Toon corner taken by Jethro Williams and cleared
Toon corner...doesn't beat the first man....I DON'T GET!
I would be so annoyed if I was a central defender coming up for a corner and it never makes it in!
Just a reminder that the late televised match is on the local NBC, not NBCSN
Yapping on about possession
The Championship has been really topsy turvy this season, with teams winning big one week and then losing the next. It makes it difficult to know who to root for from one week to the next, especially as things are so tight points wise. There are only five points between West Brom on top and Birmingham City in 11th!
So, Derby seemed a big rival at the beginning of the season; now they're nowhere. QPR had a slow start to the season, now they could go ahead of us with a win tomorrow.
One of the Longstaff brothers should be booked for pushing down Raul Jimenez
Thanks for that programming note, MUR.
It's really tight in the Championship this season. I agree about the Ram s. I picked them for a playoff spot. I guess it's possible as Villa were in a similar position at this stage last season
So why doesn't NBCSN show a match!!
NBC are in it for the money now!
Every game used to be available and now it's ONE!
Cheers, mate.
Great run....SHOOT!!!
St. Max on a speedy run then slips and the ball runs out of play
Agreed, Dave. I think they're all greedy, but that's just my opinion
Mike just sent a video of where he is playing tonight
At the Coliseum in Covent Garden... Classic 80s show again just like in Leeds in the summer
Bob...you said it wrong
Should have been 1-1
Wonder why people don't complain...not that it would do any help
The West London derby tomorrow , QPR vs the Bees takes on even more significance as QPR manager, Mark Warburton, is a former Bees manager
Wolves are knocking on the door here.
That sounds like a fantastic occasion at Covent Garden. Thanks for the info.
Would love to see a draw in that one, natch.
Desmond at AG
The Gunners Ladies one up at the half vs Citeh and top ahead of Citeh on goals scored. Chelsea could go top with a win at the Hammers
BUGGER! A draw is till a decent result. Leeds still third
Most teams...including Man Utd.... sit back and HANG on for a win. They don't go and try and improve their lead
Two minutes plus stoppage time remaining at Ashton Gate
VAR not on show yet today
VAR
Very Awful Refereeing
That is true. I don't like that tactic
Newcastle survive
Dub fumbles a shot from Jota and gets away with it as the Toon win a free kick
Oh - biggest chance yet for Wolves as Jota weaved his way through the Newcastle defense. Dubravka bobbled it but no one was following in.
Nice one , Dave. BOOM BOOM. Funny and true
We'll take a draw there. In the end, Leeds are a point behind our record from last season, despite a recent injury crisis. I'm reasonably happy with that.
Last season we earned 13 fewer points from the second half of the season than the first. That's going to be the crucial time of the season for us. Bielsa and co. will have to buy in the January transfer window in order to provide cover for a slight squad. We missed out on Dan James last season - we can't make that mistake again.
Motherwell takes a shock lead at Ibrox. Motherwell up to third, three points behind Rangers , who are three points behind Celtic
Here's a question for you two:
Have goalkeepers gotten worse over the years or is the lighter ball to blame for the kind of bobbling of the ball that now seems routine even in the top flight?
Into stoppage time at AG
A less than Pre Saiss challenge means a Wolves booking and a Toon free kick won by Almiron
Pedro Nieto on for Jota.
Jota comes off - why? He's been the liveliest player for Wolves IMHO. I would have had Jimenez off, who's done nothing.
Ends all square at Ashton Gate
Sides about to be announced for the late matches....please be a strong attacking side OGS!
I have an answer to the goalkeeping question. My brother played goalkeeper on an intramural team in college and said that ball swerves and changes direction at the last second. He says that the way the ball is designed forces the keeper to not always catch the ball and that the keepers are coached that way now
Bob should be satisfied with that result.
GOAL! That was coming Jonny volleys home Wolves' equalizer.
I leave for five seconds and I miss a goal!!
GOAL !!! JONNY ON THE SPOT AS HE TIES IT UP WITH A VOLLEY
Terrible goalkeeping
The sides are announced for Pool Spurs
Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson, Henderson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Salah, Firmino, Mane
Tottenham XI: Gazzaniga, Aurier, Alderweireld, Rose, Sanchez, Sissoko, Winks, Alli, Eriksen, Son, Kane
Thanks for that explanation, mate. I had a feeling it was something like that. We were raised with keepers like Pat Jennings, Peter Shilton and Ray Clemence who seemed to be able to catch anything. If they dropped a ball, it was a major incident, a real howler. Now it seems like even the best keepers either punch or parry just about every shot, creating more chances for the attacking side.
Nosebleed time...United up to 15th
The goal came off a long Wolves possession and a rare mistake from Dub. It culminated in Traore passing to Doherty. His cross was completely missed by Dub and the scorer was Jonny on the spot to volley into a wide open goal
Oh - Willems with a raking shot that is just a whisker away.
Cheers, Bob. I have a question for you two. Would Jennings, Shilton, Clemence and Co have caught everything if they played with the modern footballs.
United announced
Not the same back three as they did against Pool
Surely you lot can get a result at Carrow Road today; Norwich are pants!
Man Utd XI: De Gea, Lindelof, Maguire, Wan-Bissaka, Young, McTominay, Fred, Pereira, James, Rashford, Martial
Have you seen United play?
AGAIN... ONLY ONCE IN ANY COMPETION HAVE UNITED SCORED MORE THAN ONCE.... THAT WAS THE FIRST OF THE SEASON!
I don't know - I'd love to hear a chat with them talking about modern goalkeeping. Certainly the modern keepers are better with their feet, probably better with distribution. But their handling is much worse.
I know, I know, but Norwich....?
They beat City
United let everyone have a chance
Sadly, I am not confident at all!
United couldn't beat Southampton....they just let in NINE
I could see it being one nil to the United as it was on Thursday when they scored with a penalty that was karate chopped into the back of the net
I have a quiz question. What's the record away win in the entire Football League ? I know the answer.
Sean Longstaff is off
Still don't like all this red card crap
The Toon are down to ten men a s the older Longtaff brother is sent off for an atrocious tackle.
Oh dear oh dear, Shaun Longstaff, the taller brother, is off! Over the ball and high up on Neves' knee. It's a bad one.
Newcastle reduced to ten men!
It was high studs but I think they got deflected up there
The guy went down like he was shot
That was a Joel Hunter legbreaker, wasn't it, though, UWS?
Since one of the Longstaff brothers was sent off the Toon are short staffed for the remainder of the match
I thought it was a deserved red. Two footed and based on the current rules a definite red.
Jonjo Shelvy to come on to shore up the midfield then. I would've tried to go for it still with Gayle up top. Surely they've got enough defensive cover. But that's Brucie for you, always thinking defensively.
A defensive move from Brucie as Shelvey is on for Joel Linton, not Hunter
Okay, I'll give you that pun, mate - well in! LOL!
The Toon have had a defensive minded squad since the days of Raffa
Our yearly Christmas Shopping in Norwich trip with Host Nations was really for a Norwich home game. In December 1980, Norwich were playing Manchester United!! I couldn't go! I was at my cousin's wedding in Manchester!
Typical
Cheers, mate. I'm trying to liven up this drab match and the drab weather you two are facing
I didn't go to that one either
Pedro Neto wins a corner off of Shelvey
A bit of trivia. When these two met at SJP last season , it was my father-in-law's 80th birthday. Wolves won 1-2 with a stoppage time winner
grrrrr...subs!
No more Longstaffs on this short staffed team as Atsu is on.
Crystal Gayle on for St. Max . Five minutes of stoppage time. Final rolls of the dice from Brucie
Brum ladies two up vs Pool . Pool replace Brum at the bottom of the table
Dafoe scores to tie it up for Rangers vs Motherwell.
Now HT at Ibrox
Wolves go inches wide
Oh - Docherty with a header that goes inches wide. Newcastle barely hanging on now.
OH!!!~ Doherty should have won it for Wolves as her did last Season. Headed wide with a free header off a cross from Jimenez
Wolves piling it on now.
Traore runs the ball out of play and it appears that this will finish 1-1
VAR reviewing a possible Wolves penalty
No penalty
The Toon got away with one
