Euro 2020 Qualifying Saturday
Happy Saturday, everyone! Well, yesterday's Euro 2020 action was rather disappointing with England succumbing to their first qualifying defeat in 10 years. But I'm back for more footer action this afternoon. At 2:45pm EST we've got Norway v. Spain on ESPN+.
Join me for all the usual LOB chatter this afternoon, won't you?
107 Comments:

Subs: De Gea, Carvajal, Martinez, Sarabia, Moreno, Alcantara, Alberto, Llorente, Diego Llorente, Rodrigo, Reguilon, Cazorla, Lopez
Norway will be desperate for a home win tonight. They come into this match in fourth on 9 points, two behind Sweden and four behind Romania in second. Spain currently sit atop Group F with a perfect 18 points from six matches.
And we're away from Oslo, Spain with a quick start.
In other action tonight, Italy meet Euro 2000 winners Greece.
All Spanish possession so far, with the Spaniards as usual trying to choke the match with hanging on to the ball.
Josh King takes a tumble in the box but Michael Oliver waves the action on.
On the replay, It looked as if Sergio Ramos was all over King. Lucky boy.
Good afternoon, Bob. I'm watching Norway vs Spain on TUDN
Rodrigo with a nasty foul on Johansen
The Norwegians have managed to weather the early Spanish assault and are now setting out their stall.
Afternoon, MUR - I investigated TUDN and found that I don't get it. Glad that I've got coverage on the Plus.
Sweden takes the lead in Malta, putting them second , a point ahead of Romania.
Why is Kepa the first choice keeper for Spain. I would have thought that De Gea would be the better option.
OH Yes. It's on Plus along with Italy vs Greece.
I think the Chelsea Kepa is starting because De Gea is probably being blamed for United's poor form
Oh - great play from Spain and a ball was fizzed across the area by Rodrigo. No one connected with it. As usual, Spain don't have a true sniffer goalscorer.
Romania won 0-3 at the Faroes earlier today. Almost a must win for Norway to keep their qualification hopes alive
I don't see that at all. De Gea's been great for you lot. It's the other stars who have been underperforming, particularly Pogba, who continues to get picked for France.
In Group D , the Irish drew 0-0 in Atlanta while the Danes defeated the Swiss 1-0. The Danes and Irish top the group level on points with the Swiss four points behind , but with a game in hand. The Swiss may need to qualify through the NL playoffs.
Agreed, Bob. Spain has two top keepers, a luxury that other countries wish they had.,
Oh - King had a decent chance there but put his weak header right into Kepa's arms.
In Group J , Bosnia defeated the Finns 4-1 earlier today. Meanwhile , Armenia has taken the lead in Lichtenstein. The Finns still, second , but only ahead of Armenia on head to head and two points ahead of Bosnia
And don't forget Kiko Cassila - that's three top goalkeepers. ;-)
It was a great cross by El Abdellaoui. Josh King should have done better
I just checked FOTMOB. Kiko didn't make the squad. The Third choice keeper is Pau Lopez, who just joined Roma from Real Betis
Have you been keeping up with CONCACAF Nations' League?
Josh King has a shot blocked by Sergio Ramos for a Norway corner
I haven't, mate - I don't really even understand what the CONCACAF Nation's League is all about.
Former Hammers and Cottagers player < Nordveit off with a head injury and replaced by Hovland
Nortveidt is shaken up and may need to be taken off for a possible concussion check.
It's basically the same as the UEFA Nation's League, but for Gold Cup qualifying instead of Euro qualifying. Same format and rules. The Gold Cup is being increased from 12 to 16 to accomodate this nonsense
The U.S kicked off their NL campaign defeating Cuba 7-0 while Mexico won 1-5 in Bermuda.
I've just checked the England qualifying schedule. They've got three matches left to play - obviously the match in Bulgaria on Monday evening. Then at home to Montenegro and finally away to Kosovo in November. Two wins against Bulgaria and Montenegro should make the final match academic.
So is it like the UEFA Nation's League in that sides get benefits from doing well in the CONCACAF Nation's League?
Correct, mate. There's the second chance to qualify for the Gold Cup like there is for the Euros.
Despite the loss yesterday, England should qualify . I expect England and the Czechs to qualify while Kosovo can qualify through the NL playoffs because they won their NL Group.
El Abdellaoui should have done better. Got a nice cross field pass, but crossed straight to the Spain Kepa.
Oh - big chance there. Squandered by the Norwegian.
Jarstein does well to turn around a long range effort from Fabian
Just to let you know that Canada vs the U.S. is on the Deuce on Tuesday , kicking off at 7:30 PM.
Josh King for a foul on Saul Niguez.
Josh King picks up a needless yellow for prodding on a toe.
Thanks, mate - but my priority that evening will be the fourth Democratic Primary debate.
Sorry. I forgot about that. Should be interesting.
Jesus Navas heads out a cross from, El Abdellaoui for a corner as we are in stoppage time
AN LOB Blogging duo of stoppage time minutes
It's 0-0 at the half in Oslo. That result would benefit Spain more than Norway
Teams back out for the second half now. It's 0-0 and all to play for. Again - Norway really need the win while a draw would be no problem for the Spanish.
The second half is underway from Oslo.
Spain get us underway - no changes at the interval.
GOAL !!!! SPAIN TAKES THE LEAD EARLY IN THE SECOND HALF WITH A SPECTACULAR LONG RANGE EFFORT FROM SAUL NIGUEZ. DESPITE THAT RANSTEIN SHOULD HAVE DONE BETTER IN THE NORWAY GOAL
GOAL! That didn't take long. Norway couldn't clear after the initial cross and the keeper could really have done better with that drive.
Oh - King with almost an immediate response. Put the header wide.
Nearly an equalizer for Norway
Norway cannot afford to lose. They would be a long shot to qualify while Spain would just need a win in Sweden on Tuesday to clinch qualification.
The only 0-0 match is Italy vs Greece , which benefits Italy and not Greece for similar reasons to this match
Even a draw doesn't help Norway. They need to throw everything but the kitchen sink at Spain now to get two goals.
Agreed. Otherwise they can forget about Euro 2020 next Summer.
Seb Larsson puts Sweden two up in Malta with a spot kick
King is a handful, but he doesn't seem to have the finishing product. Where does he play?
I've just looked him up - of course it's the Josh King that plays for the Cherries. D'oh! Didn't realize that he was Norwegian.
Biscuits with a requisite booking for a typical foul.
The Norwegian boss is about to launch former Palace striker Surloth, who likes to throw himself about a bit.
Yes. He plays for the Cherries and is a graduate of the MUFC Academy
I see that. Interesting story. Of Gambian parentage but born in Oslo. It's truly an international game at this point.
Surloth does not a have prolific scoring rate , especially against a defensively strong side like Spain. He's on for Cottagers defender, Johanssen. A striker for a defender.
Former Gunners player, Caz, on for current Gunners player, Dani Ceballos.
Former Gunner Santi Cazorla coming on now.
Agreed. Many countries are becoming increasingly multicultural.
An OG puts Sweden three up in Malta. It's looking a battle for second place between Sweden and Romania.
Bob's favorite player, Jorginho, gives Italy the lead vs Greece with a spot kick
Spain nearly went two up as a long range effort from Fabian clipped the top of the bar
Oh - off the bar from Bernat. Great effort!
If that result holds then Italy will become the second team to qualify for Euro 2020 while Greece would be all but eliminated
Lichenstein scores a surprising equalizer vs Armenia, which puts the Finns in sole possession of second place, two points ahead of Armenia and Bosnia
Seb Larsson scores his second spot kick of the match, putting Sweden up by a Barber Shop Quartet in Malta.
Oh - how did that one stay out. Norway really should be level at this point. That would have livened up the last twenty minutes or so.
Rodri on for Ozorbajal.
UWS and his brothers were complaining about England last night - and it was a poor performance. But one bad night doesn't make a team bad. I still maintain that England are one of the best sides in the world. I look at sides like Italy with the likes of Jorginho playing for them. And this Spanish team full of side pass merchants. They don't impress me. They're game managers and not much else, while England are genuinely exciting.
OH!!! Josh King was through on goal and shot over with just the Kepa to beat
Oh - Josh King spurns another chance. Blasts over after having done everything else right.
Agreed. I would rate Belgium and England among the favorites if they play to their potential
King is livid that Ramos was let off for the deliberate handball.
Sergio Ramos is booked for an off the ball challenge on Josh King and will be suspended for the key match in Sweden in Tuesday
Now it's Fabian Ruiz with a booking. Deliberate elbow.
Italy goes two up vs Greece and have basically clinched qualification for Euro 2020.
The final roll of the dice from Lars Lagerbeck as Johnsen is on for Tigers midfield player, Henriksen
Raul Albiol heads out for a Norway corner
Inigo Martinez on for Bernat.
Spain trying to bolt the door now - Norway have been threatening.
Fabian with a shot that clips the outside of the post and is out for a goal kick
Oh - a whisker wide.
A Barber Shop Quartet of stoppage time minutes.
PENALTY NORWAY LATE IN THE MATCH
What drama! Norway have a late, late penalty!
It's Kepa who takes out the Norwegian striker.
tHE kEPA BOOKED AS HE BARGED INTO aBDELLAOUI AND MAY HAVE COST HIS TEAM A PAIR OF POINTS.
Josh King to step up against Kepa.
Scores! 1-1!
GOAL !!! JOSH KING TIES IT UP FROM THE SPOT, SENDING THE KEPA THE WRONG WAY
In truth, a draw doesn't help Norway, so King should be running into the goal to get the ball back instead of celebrating.
Norway deserved that one but they need another goal.
Spain top , but cannot clinch qualification to Euro 2020 today. Norway with a slim chance due to that equalizer.
It finishes 1-1 as Josh King ties it up with a stoppage time penalty
That's it - it's now well poised for Tuesday evening when Sweden play Spain and Norway go to Romania.
It's been a pleasure sharing your company, mate. Enjoy the rest of your Saturday evening.
Cheers, mate. Great chatting and enjoy the rest of your Saturday as well.
