Saturday's Alright for Footer
Hurrah! It's the weekend again and we can settle in for some of the good stuff. First up this morning is Brighton hosting a faltering Tottenham Hotspur side. That's followed by the usual 10 am kickoffs, including league leaders Liverpool hosting Leicester on NBC Sports. My beloved Leeds are traveling to the Evil Den to meet Evil Millwall, but it's not not the Plus sadly. At the end of the day, there is West Ham v. Palace. You know you want to pull of a chair and enjoy your brekkies with me this morning.
347 Comments:
Spurs arrive on the south coast fresh from that 7-2 humiliation at the hands of Bayern in midweek. Still, they could end up in third place with a big win today. Brighton on the other hand have been decent this season, despite their current position in 16th. It should be an absorbing affair.
The teams lining up in the tunnel:
Brighton & Hove Albion (possible 3-3-2-2) Ryan; Webster, Dunk, Burn; Montoya, Stephens, Alzate; Gross, Mooy; Maupay, Connolly.
Substitutes: Button, Bong, Balogun, March, Bissouma, Jahanbakhsh, Murray.
Tottenham Hotspur (4-D-2) Lloris; Sissoko, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies; Dier; Ndombele, Eriksen; Lamela; Son, Kane.
Substitutes: Gazzaniga, Sanchez, Foyth, Winks, Alli, Lucas Moura, Skipp.
Referee Jon Moss.
We're almost set to go here at the Amex. Brighton to get us started. Neither side wearing their traditional colors. Spurs in a color that's usually seen on a bridesmaid's dress - is that seafoam?
GOAL! Oh dear oh dear, that's another howler from Lloris and Brighton are in front inside three minutes.
Lloris tried to catch that looping ball right under his crossbar instead of tipping it over. And he's collapsed in his net. I'm not sure whether that's from embarrassment or whether he landed awkwardly.
Burn’s booming, overhit cross forced Lloris to backpedal towards his own line. He tried to catch the ball instead of pushing it over the bar, but his momentum took him back into the goal. All he could do was drop the ball in front of an open goal, and Maupay headed it in from a yard. Lloris landed badly and looks in serious pain. He won’t be able to continue.
After a five minute delay, Lloris has been stretchered off and replaced.

A nice set-piece routine from Brighton. Mooy drives a left-wing corner to the edge of the area for Stephens, whose vicious volley is blocked by the head of Vertonghen. I think that was going in. It knocked Vertongen off his feet, but he seems fine now.
Spurs have just got to pick themselves up and get back into this match. Spurs fans who have made the trip today will expect nothing less.
Great tackle there by Eric Dier in the area. That had to be a perfect slide tackle.
Good morning, Bob. Here to join you for that surprising lead after a bit of a late lie in.
Have a hot pot of coffee brewing. Turned on the telly when Vertonghen went down after that great block
Morning, MUR - how are you, mate?
Doing well. Thank you for asking. How about you and Kate?
Still 0-0 on As Banjo Boy and Co visit the Cottage. Are they behaving themselves?
We're peachy. We've got chili competition party ahead of us tonight, so we'll be making a big pot of my famous recipe this afternoon.
Vertonghen's really in the wars this morning. He and Maupay have a head clash and the big Belgian has a shiner as a result. Will he be able to continue?
Vertonghen off for treatment again and holding that shiner obtained from the block. Is he done for the day?
Wish I was there to join you for that . Sure it's delicious. Surely, Banjo Boy and Co will be gone by then
Decent hit there by Erickson but Ryan was able to handle it at the second attempt.
Spurs with their first shot of the match and it's a long range effort from Eriksen straight to Matty Ryan
IS the Chili competition an Oktoberfest theme?
Harry Kane is fouled by Webster on a Spuds break. That should have been a booking. Was it even a foul?
Brighton screaming for a pen as Connolly goes down. Nothing doing. Sissoko fairly shouldered him.
It's our friend Shazad hosting tonight. He's a teetotaler because of his religious views but I'll be bringing along a few bottles of Octoberfest.
Var to review a possible penalty to the Seagulls. It sure looks like Davinson Sanchez pushed down Irish teenager, Aaron Anthony Connolly. Jon Moss says no penalty.
GOAL! Brighton are 2-0 up and Spurs are really up against it.
That's a debut goal for the teenager, who connected with the initial cross from Mooy. The keeper got down to it but could only parry it back to him. He made no mistake with the second effort.
2-0!
GOAL.YOUNG CONNOLLY PUTS THE SEAGULLS TWO UP. IT CAME OFF A THROW. GREAT CROSS IN THE BOX. HIS ORIGINAL SHOT WAS WELL SAVED BY GAZZAA AND HE PUT AWAY THE REBOUND WITH A GREAT FINISH
That's the Seagulls first multi goal game at the AMEX since December. WOW!That's eighteen home match. We no why they nearly went down last season and would have if Cardiff weren't so inept.
Brighton have thoroughly deserved this lead. They've been much the better team.
Christian Gross with a shot deflected for a Seagulls corner
Shaz is always great company. Please send him my regards.
Spuds may be managed by Mo Po, but playing as if managed by Mo Fein, which is not Fine. Right mate?
Spurs' heads have really gone down now. Potch will have to freshen things up at half time. There's really no excuse for leaving the likes of Dele Ali and Lucas Moura sitting on the bench.
I will do, mate. It should be an entertaining evening.
In the words of UWS, the Spuds were faffing about at the back
True. Spurs can't wait to get into the dressing room for a revising half time cuppa.
The 10 AM match on Plus is Bristol City vs the Reading Railroad. That's not idle gossip.
The two Seagulls strikers that scored weren't even playing for the Seagulls last season. One was playing in the Championship and the other spent part of the season playing for the Seagulls Academy side and part of the season on loan to Luton as they won L1 last season
The Seagulls are pressing for a third goal which would surely kill off this match.
It's still 0-0 at the Cottage. Sounds like a tense affair at the Cottage.
Mooy pulls the trigger from distance but is well wide with the effort. But why not? Gazzaniga didn't look too clever on the Connolly goal.
Lamela with a close range effort block on a Spuds break off a pass from Harry Kane. That speedy break started with a speedy run by Number One Son off a shot from the Seagulls was blocked
Lamela has a shot kicked off the line by Dunk. Actually, it would have gone wide, but it was still a promising move from Spurs.
Banjo Boys lads take the lead at the Cottage.
Not surprisingly, there will be seven minutes of stoppage time after that extended stoppage for the Lloris injury.
The fans are so thirsty for extra footie that we are seven up in terms of stoppage time minutes
Not good; that'll have Charlton on top with 22 points.
Banjo Boy's lads one up at the half
OH ! a pass from Aaron Mooy is nearly deflected for an OG by Toby. Greta cross into the box by Gross.
Oh - nearly 3-0 now. Long looping cross from Gross to the backstick. A ball in from that position ricocheted off a defender and could have gone anywhere.
Let's hope Kate can score an equalizer in the second half. A draw would be the best result there.
Leeds can go top with a win at the Evil Lions, but I expect the Swans to go back on top as they host the rock bottom Potters
I wish there were coverage of the Evil Millwall v. Leeds clash today, but the Plus are playing the Bristol City match. And that's not gossip, mind you.
I just checked and Banjo Boy's lads are third behind Leeds on goal difference
That's likely.
The Seagulls are two up at the half vs a declining Spuds side.
We've reached the interval with Brighton well and truly on top 2-0 and Spurs really down in the dumps. Not enjoying their day out at the seaside.
True, mate. That's a fact.
The second half is underway from the AMEX
We're back on at the Amex for the second half. Harry Winks has come on. for Ndombele who was really ineffectual today.
Jarred Gillet in charge of VAR . Two of those decisions were a really close shave.
Spurs win their first corner of the match of a block from Aaron Mooy.
Sounds like a great substitution as Spuds were playing more like tiddly Winks than footie.
Potch is stomping around the technical area looking really arsed off.
The Cottagers made a double substitution at the half.. Harrison Reed for Harry Arter and Bobby Reid for Steve Sess. Sounds like you and Kate were rattling a few teacups at the half.
Number One Son blocked with a pass for another Spuds corner. Then cleared for another
Don't blame Mo Po. I'm sure he gave the hairdryer treatment at the half after a really Dier first half.
Kate ties it up for the Cottagers vs Banjo Boys lads.
Wahay! Good old Kate - she never lets me down.
I'm guessing a draw would be the best result for Leeds.
It's all Brighton pressure in this period. Spurs look as if they don't want to be here.
Aaron Mooy with a shot blocked off a pass from Neil Maupay. Aaron Connolly holding his face off a real Dier challenge
Yes, definitely - both sides are in the top six.
Banjo Boys back in a 1-2 lead minutes after Kate tied it up.
Seagulls win their first corner of the half. Taken by Aaron Mooy and headed away
Eric Dier was booked for that elbow. Should have been red card
Silly yellow card there for the Brighton lad for obstructing the free kick.
Dale Stephens booked for a push on Lamela. That was a lot more innocuous than the elbow from Dier. I don't blame Dale for being upset
A really Dier free kick from Eriksen is straight into the wall.
Charlton back up to third and the Cottagers in 6th place. Will they meet in the playoffs in May?
The Brummies defeated Woodie's struggling Teesiders 2-1 yesterday. That doesn't really affect Leeds United , but my affect Woodie.
It's now Desmond at the Cottage as Kate scores her second goal of the match.
Cottagers now up to third and Banjo Boy's lads down to 7th
Spurs made the European final last year, ahead of any expectations, moved into their new stadium and finally spent money on players. Why are they so disaffected?
Seagulls with a free kick midway between the Spuds box and the corner flag.Nice free kick from Gross curled in off the top of the bar. Gazza may have got a finger tip to that
GOAL! What a lovely strike from the youngster. A memorable debut for him. 3-0!
GOAL !!!AARON CONNOLLY WITH A DOUBLE ON HIS FIRST PREM START AS THE SEAGULLS GO THREE UP.
Not sure if you agree with me , but Connolly was a lot like TH 14 with that last goal.. He got a long ball from the back down the left, cut inside Toby, then scored with a great curling finish in the corner.
Back to your question, too many Spuds players, especially Eriksen, are distracted wanting away for a presumably bigger payday. BLOODY MODERN FOOTBALLERS.
Oh - first big chance for Tottenham. Son should have scored but whiffed on the turn.
OH! Best Spuds move of the match. Cissy cut inside an a superb pass found a wide open Number One Son and he missed his kick from two yards out
You're absolutely right, mate.
Harry Kane and NOT Abel to score as he curled a shot over the top corner ff a run and pass from Number One Son.
Potch has seen enough. Lucas Moura about to come on.
Cheers, mate. Spuds went out of the League Cup to Colchester, thrashed by Bayern in the CL , and being thrashed at the AMEX. Really poor!
Son to come off for Moura - that fresh air attempt was the most lively he looked all day.
He's on for Number One Son, but he played like Number three today.
Cissy with a foul as he was Dan Burned . Free kick just outside the Spuds box.
That free kick from Aaron Mooy went over. everyone and out of play
Connolly makes way after a debut for the history books.
Aaron Connolly with a debut that he will never forget. A deserved standing ovation as he's replaced by Bissouma
Great description, Bob. Surely a Republic of Ireland full debut is not too far away
Oh - Moura was nearly in for a consolation goal but Matty Ryan came up big.
I would imagine so. He was really impressive today.
OH!!! Great skill by Lucas Mora. Cut inside the Seagulls defense after controlling a pass from Eriksen and his close range effort was well blocked by Matty Ryan
In women's Euro Qualifying , Germany has gone five up vs the Ukraine. Hard to pin that on the Biden's.
Oh - Gross lashes one at goal. Gazza behind this one.
Oh - Ryan denies Moura again! Great save!
OH!!! Matty Ryan with a full length diving save off a long range effort from Lucas Mora.
Still Desmond at the Cottage. Has he been enjoying LOB brekkies?
The final roll of the dice from Graham Potter Alzate is replaced by Bong. Seems as if a few Spuds players have had a bong.
Maura appears to be the only Spurs player who cares.
Lewis booked because Harry Kane was dunked down
Now Dale Stephens is down for the Seagulls.
A late substitution to ruin UWS' morning. It's Kevin Phillips Bong of Monty Python fame.
Sad, but true, Bob.
Now it's the final roll of the dice from Graham "Harry" Potter as Glenn " Arthur " Murray on for Dale Stephens.
Into a trio of stoppage time minutes
Seagulls manager, Graham Potter seems as if he's like Harry with the spell he's woven on the Spuds.
This will be a real tonic for Potter and his Seagulls. They're almost certainly going to face a relegation battle this season.
It's over at the AMEX and the Seagulls with a surprising emphatic victory as they thrash the Spuds 3-0
I'm back for the 10 o'clockers. It's Liverpool v. Leicester on the box but I'll have most of my attention on the Evil Den where my Leeds boys will be playing today. Come on, you Leeds! MOT!

Soccer Saturday has not started yet. Not sure what's taken so long as the matches have already begun
I haven't been able to get it started either.
Soccer Saturday not loading this morning. Will use FOTMOB for updates
First effort - Stu Dallas tries one from 25 yards out.
That's odd. All the matches are loading, just not Soccer Saturday
Disappointing. I'm going to keep trying it.
Benzema with an assist from Bale has given Real the lead in the top of the table clash vs surprising Granada
Top vs bottom as the Swans take the lead vs Stoke. Both relegated from the Prem two years ago, going in opposite directions
Real Dons take a much needed lead vs Rochdale.
Oh - Stu Dallas again, with a spectacular volleyed effort from distance. Not far wide!
Rams in the lead vs the Hatters
Oh - Milner should have scored there. Muffed his half volley.
TAA with a nutmeg and a nice cross blasted over from close range at the far post by Milner

Jed Wallace scores from the spot and we're 1-0 down.
Scunny takes the lead at Argyle
Sorry, Bob.
Abe Lincoln in the lead vs the Black Cats and the Real Dons two up vs Rochdale
That'll probably mean a reshuffle with Stu Dallas dropping back into the back four and Luke Ayling shifting over to help out in the middle.
Rotherham two up vs unbeaten Coventry
I have Soccer Saturday up and running. Now working
Morecambe and Wise in the lead at Port Vale while Argyle ties it up vs Scunny.
The Baggies take the lead vs Cardiff.
Salford takes the lead at Wasall.
Not good - both Swansea and West Brom are leading.
Sam Clucas ties it up for rock bottom Stoke at the table topping Sans. Good news for Leeds.
The Foxes win a corner , winning the ball on the high press
Loveren nearly heads iun for an OG as heads over a Foxes cross for a Foxes corner
Good spell here for Leicester, but the Liverpool backfour is stalwart.
Now Kiko has saved from Ben Thompson. Sounds like we're really under the cosh.
Cross from TAA headed over by Jonny Evans for a Pool corner
COME ON LEEDS . SCORE! MOT!
Injury for Millwall - they've replaced Ryan Leonard early doors. Shaun Williams on for him.
Oxford Shirts wear their way to a lead at Accrington Stanley. Have feasted their way to a baker's dozen goals in the past three matches
Naughty by Ricardo on Milner. Lucy will not be pleased.
Ndidi with a hack. Gets a yellow. Ndisappointing from him.
Yeah - we'll need a goal back pronto to turn this one around.
Connor Hourihane puts Villa two up at CR
Bermuda international, Nahki Wells gives QPR the lead vs Blackburn
Real Dons three up vs Rochdale
Evil Ridsdale's lads take an expected lead vs second from bottom Barnsley
We're down to third already - this cannot stand.

Richard Burton takes the lead at the Fake Dons
Agreed. COME ON LEEDS . LET'S GO TOP! MOT!
lOVEREN CLEARS A PASS FROM cHILLY FOR A fOXES CORNER

Foxes win a free kick off the next corner
Now it's a free kick to Leicester - Maddison over it.
Penalty at CR to Villa.
Another Millwall chance. Ben Thompson over the bar from the edge of the area.
Penalty from Wesley saved by McGovern. Wesley denied a first half hat-trick
Dover takes the lead vs Notts County
Fabinho booked for a not so Fab challenge
Coming down to the last few minutes of the first half. I want a goal!
GOAL! Mane scores somewhat against the run of play.
GOAL !!!MANE OH MANE !POOL TAKES THE LEAD.
Poor from Jonny Evans there - he should have cut out that long ball. Once he'd slipped, Mane was off to the races.
Long ball from Milner caught out Jonny Evans and with just Kasper to beat, Mane scored with a well placed finish
Motherwell on top vs St. Helen Mirren while Posh two up at Wycombe
Oh - Mane was in there again but this time Kasper got his body in the way.
Killie on top at Hearts while Crocodile Dundee on top vs Arbroath
