A Wintry Saturday
Morning, chaps! It's a bitter cold weekend here in WNY, so there's nothing better than to settle in by the fire and enjoy some of the good stuff from across The Pond. First up is a London Derby between Frank Lampard's in-form Chelski and Crystal Palace. That's followed at 10am by the usual slate of kickoffs including Spurs v. Sheffield United on NBC Sports and my beloved Leeds United against Blackburn in the Championship. Finally, the late one is Leicester v. Arsenal - a battle for the top four.
Join me for all the proceedings here on the LOB!

Morning, chaps! Chelsea are a lot of fun right now. So far this season, Frankie’s Freewheelers have been involved in a 7-1, a 5-2, a 4-2, a 4-1, a 3-2, two 2-2s and of course that wonderfully absurd 4-4 against Ajax the other night. Last weekend, were it not for Ben Foster, they could easily have beaten Watford by ten goals; as it panned out, were it not for Kepa Arrizabalaga, they’d have ended up drawing 2-2.
Good morning , Bob. Here to join you for what is a wintry pattern compared to what we had. Cool, overcast , and dreary since yesterday
No tunnel action on NBC this morning. Here are the players who have just come out at the Bridge:
Chelsea: Arrizabalaga, James, Tomori, Zouma, Emerson, Kante, Kovacic, Willian, Mount, Pulisic, Abraham.
Subs: Christensen, Caballero, Giroud, Hudson-Odoi, Batshuayi, Azpilicueta, Gilmour.
Crystal Palace: Guaita, Ward, Tomkins, Cahill, van Aanholt, Townsend, Kouyate, Milivojevic, McArthur, Zaha, Ayew.
Subs: Dann, Hennessey, Schlupp, Benteke, McCarthy, Kelly, Riedewald.
Referee: Mike Dean (Wirral).
Agreed. Foster was the one that nearly scored. Should be an interesting contest. A return to SB for Cahill while Bat Boy was on loan at Palace last season
Apparently this is the youngest ever Chelski starting XI in a Premier League match. Wow!
Morning, MUR! How are you, mate? Good week?
Morning Boys
The Chelsea Pensioners in attendance
Impeccable silence...well done everyone
Good morning, Bob and Dave. Doing well. Thank you for asking. How are you, Bob and Dave?
They're off from SB
Crystal Palace get us going in the first half wearing a change white strip.
We are off
Chelsea on the front foot right away
Fast opening for the Blues, with Pulisic involved early doors.
It's the youngest vs oldest Prem manager in action. Both are English and both from London, managing London clubs
Morning, UWS! One more school week down, eh?
How is the Snickers jar looking?
An East Midlands Derby, Forest vs the Rams has just kicked off in the Championship.I'm guessing Leeds fans would be rooting for the Rams
You're getting closer to the finish line, UWS. Delighted for you and you will enjoy it.
Hi Guys
I'll send you a pic right now
Mount plays in Pulisic who jinks inside on his right foot and fires wide.
Bob, did you see the Bruno texts?
How is retired life feeling, MUR?
I'm just catching up with the texts now, UWS.
MacArthur clears a pass from Willian for a Chelsea corner
Just tuned in the Clough Derby...where Derby is playing!
Retired life is great. UWS won't regret it.Still getting up early for some reason.
Wow - that's a lovely tribute to his dad. How did you get to know Bruno? Would I have met him before?
Nice one, UWS. Bob will probably be rooting for Derby
Not a good free kick by Mount
These days they always want to send in a inswinging free kick because it might go straight in... I always prefer an out swinger
Great move by the Yank...saved
OH!!!! Nicwe run by Willian and passes to Pulisic , who gets past a Palace player and his close range effort is blocked by Guaita.
My dad found that that was true, too. Couldn't shake the early morning schedule. He also dressed for work every day for the first couple of years. Then he gradually got more informal.
It's been all Chelsea early doors.,
Reece James earns Chelski a good free kick opportunity now.
I'm already informal, just getting up early and not sleeping as much
The FA Cup First Round is on this weekend. Pompey play on Monday, which will be on Plus
Oh - Willian curls one just by the post.
OH!!! The curled free kick was inches wide, just failing to curve in past the near post
I've just noticed that the Leeds match isn't on ESPN+. They're showing PNE v. Huddersfield, instead.
I am sure you met him. He lived in the house on the main drag just outside of the Meadows. Almost across from the War Memorial.
As I said, we did hang around much in our youth. We were sort of rivals...probably thought I was a flash yank!
When I started playing cricket, we became really good friends. We went to all the games together. He has come over to visit a few times. Once in college and then maybe twice since I've been around here.
I actually went to NYC for the first ever time on March 17, 1987 with him... we drove down to Suffern and took the train in
Sorry, Bob. Wrong War of the Roses match and wrong West Yorkshire team
Are Pompey at home?
I really didn't know him, but sorry for his loss
Kathy was looking up stuff on our credit card this week and noticed a $5 credit from NBC
They must have given us $5 for not having the first few minutes of United Norwich
They are away to Harrogate.
Chelski getting a lot of free kicks in this opening period.
That may be true. Sounds fair.
MUR? What loss?
Kick off for the Monday match on Plus is at 2:45 PM in case anyone wants to chat
At Fratton Park or not?
Oh...you told me
Sorry. I misread some comments. Please disregard the comments about the loss.
There was a Cup match yesterday
Carlisle beat Dulwich Hamlet 1-4
Yet another Chelsea free kick and Zaha booked for a foul on Willian after being tackled by Reese James
Another free kick now - chance for Chelski to chip one into the box.
I've asked Bruno to send pictures/videos from Portman Road
Fred says that the Black Cats vs Gils kicks off in about ten minutes
Poor free kick from Emmerson curled well wide. Similar idea to Willian but much less successful
No - Emerson decides to have a go. Well wide.
United actually created some chances and took some shots midweek in the EL....will they do the same at home to Brighton?
Very sad that I am by no means confident of United getting a win tomorrow
I saw that EL match and it was a decent performance. United should have won by more because Rash missed a few sitters
Late game today is Leicester hosting Arsenal
People are saying if the Arsenal lose...Emory Board is out!
What does Steve think about it, Bob?
Why did Arsenal play in the EL on Wednesday ?
Did you see the highlights or the whole match? How?
I thought them playing on Wednesday was an odd one.
Gooner isn't terribly happy with the proceedings but I don't think he's blaming Emery for it, yet.
I saw the whole match on a Spanish language channel. Also watched Rangers vs Porto and Lazio vs Celtic
A very dangerous free kick area now. McArthur gives up the foul yet again.
General MacArthur on the defense as he Mounts down a Chelsea player in the D
Free kick Mounted off the Palace wall.
United have already clinched a place in the knockout rounds of the EL . Still need to win to clinch first place in the group
A rare Palace free kick as Reese James fouls Zaha
Emmerson booked . Not sure why
Free kick from Milovojevic cured wide of the far post
Kovacic booked for am foul on Townsend on a rare Palace break
For all of their pretty football, Chelski haven't really worked the Palace goalkeeper.
Modern Day football
Still 0-0 in this match and the East Midlands Derby
Match going according to plan for Palace, who are frustrating Chelsea. Only save of note was the close range block from Pulisic
Willian hits one from distance. Loops up and into the keeper's arms.
Joel Ward goes off injured and it's like for like as he's replaced by Martin Kelly.
Ward limps off and its replaced by Martin Kelly.
Four stoppage time minutes to come - not sure where those cam from.
A Barber Shop Quartet of stoppage time minutes and going according to Palace's tune
Me either. I was thinking of a couple due to the injury. Making up for the shortage of stoppage time minutes vs Ajax?
Fred says that Aiden McGeady has given the Black Cats the lead vs the Gils
Zouma and Kepa nearly play themselves into trouble for no reason whatsoever.
4 added minutes.... this added time stuff is so RANDOM!!
Something has to be done!!
The CL game at the Bridge this week... second half had two sending offs, VAR checks and the rest of the stuff..... THREE added minutes!
I don't know why people aren't complaining!
The game has been played for over 100 years and a few minutes have been added here and there
These days... SIX is a norm!
Back in 93 when Bruce scored those two goals to beat Sheffield Wed... there were 6 added minutes! Everyone but United fans complained! In that match, they had to replace the ref with a linesman and bring some other official on.... it was legit
Now 6 minutes....is too little
HATE IT
The half is coming to an end - I'm off or a half time snuggle.
Sunderland take the lead vs Gillingham in the Cup
WIlian has a shot blocked with the last kick of the half
OH!!! Willian misses a sitter after ping pongy action in the Palace box. Actually came off of Guaita
It's 0-0 at the end of a frustrating half for Chelsea. Same halftime score in the East Midlands Derby
Something has to be done about the time
The clock should stop !
It would stop the pointless subbing
It would stop the feigning injury
Clock doesn't have to stop for everything. Subbing, goals, VAR and injuries.
I always like that I never knew exactly how much time is left. There was always a chance. The ref can still add a few minutes for random stuff but this much time is ridiculous. I like the idea of stopping the clock for stuff, still adding a few minutes and then the match is over when the ball goes out of play after the few added minutes(like rugby)
A team that needs to attack can keep possession and try to score...the team that is winning... win back possession and kadumph the ball into the stands
Off for walkies after my venting
The second half is underway from Sb
Enjoy the walkies, Dave
Tammy Abraham offside off a deflected effort as he shoots wide from close range off a deflected shot
We're back on. To respond to UWS' rant, I've never been that fussed about the time issue. I've always liked the unpredictability of the time in football, as opposed to American sports where there is always a dull countdown at the end.
I enjoy the unpredictability, but far too much time is added on in matches. When Wolves played in the EL on Thursday, there a dozen second half stoppage time minutes
Jorginho enjoying a nice apple snack up in the luxury boxes.
Still 0-0 in the East Midlands Derby
GOAL !!!TAMMY ABRAHAM GIVES CHELSEA THE LEAD WITH A NICE FINISH
GOAL! Tammy Abraham slots home Chelski's first after some lovely interplay. He's level top goalscorer on 10 now.
The goal; came off a Chelsea throw. Kovacic went on a run and passed to Willian. He found Tammy Abraham who went through a gap in the Palace defense and scored with a well paced shot past Guaita.
Nearly a a second for Tamym Abraham as his close range effort was blocked by Guaita.
James Thomkins down for Palace. That would be the second Palace defender lost through injury
He seems to be okay to continue for the time being
OH!!! A long range effort from Pulisic is tipped over by Guaita.
Oh - Pulisic rifles one and it's tipped over.
Forest are in front having Grabban the lead a few minutes ago. Now up to fourth behind Leeds on goal difference
Chelski work Abraham into a shooting position again but he blasts over this time.
Black Cats one up at the half vs the Gils.
Not good - we could use a draw there.
COME ON YOU RAMS! LET'S BE GRABBAN AN EQUALIZER
Nice one, mate - tee hee!
Cheers, mate
UWS would not be pleased with the Palace crossing.
Pulisic cuts in and his shot lands in Row K
The 10 AM match on NBCSN is the Spuds vs the Evil Blades. The big one may be the relegation six pointer between the Saints and Toffees.
Ayew wins a Palace free kick. A really soft one.
Uncle Woy acting just like Harry Truman as MacArthur is relieved of his duty. Her 's replaced by Schlupp.
James Thomkins heads wide from the free kick
The Bat Boy is being readied for action now.
Play is stopped as a player from each team is down with a head injury. It was a clash of heads between Ayew and Zouma
A round of applause for Tammy Abraham , the scorer . It's like for like as he's replaced by Bat Boy, who was on loan at Palace last season
Bob, can you check my remark at 8:59 for historical accuracy?
Palace trying to force the issue now, looking for an equalizer. Chelski have shown to be loose at the back and prone to giving up late goals. 15 minutes left to sort it all out.
Was that an accurate statement at 8:59?
GOAL !!! PULISIC PUTS CHELSEA TWO UP WITH A HEADER OFF A DEFLECTED EFFORT FROM BAT BOY
GOAL! Pulisic gets his goal! That's five now in the past three matches.
It started with a nice long diagonal pass to Pulsic down the left. He cut in and passed to Bat Boy , whose shot was deflected and Pulisic scored with a close range header
Pulisic started that move with a lovely ball through to Bat Boy. The shot came in and looped up off a defender fortuitously and Pulisic was on hand to nod home.
A standing ovation for Pulsic after scoring his first goal at SB. He's replaced by Hudson -Odoi
The final roll of the dice for Uncle Woy it's McCarthyism as the Coyote is taken off for a long rest
And that's Pulisic's day done; he's replaced by Hudson-Odoi.
Fred will not be pleased that the Gils have tied it up at the SOL in the first minute of the second half.
Palace’s last substitution: McCarthy for Kouyate.
Bob will be interested to note that a few minutes ago Uncle Woy, like Harry Truman , relieved MacArthur, the midfield GENERAL, of his duties.
Poor old Fred, having to support that lot.
Chelsea up to second ahead of the late matches today and tomorrow.
LOL, mate. He's pushing for a Black Cats winner. Doesn't want a replay
I wonder if McArthur uttered the immortal words - "I shall return."
First save of the day for the Chelsea Kep[a and it's comfortable one as Bob will be pleased that he repelled McCarthyism
The final roll of the dice from Lamps as 18 year old Scottish under 21 international, Billy Gilmour is mounted on to the pitch
LOL! No chance of a Palace return until after the international break
Mason Mount coming on for yet another Chelski youngster, Billy Gilmour.
I am back...Shad wouldn't let me alone so I had to go early!
Welcome back, Dave. A Barber Shop quartet of stoppage time minutes singing about Dave's return
Bat Boy with a shot blocked for a corner off a pass from Kante
I read your comments and I LOVED never knowing how much time was left. When playing in college, I didn't like knowing that there was only ten second left and the ball was down the wrong end
I just don't think it is as consistent as it should be AND some of the time is so over the top
Still have the random added minutes but stop the clock when VAR is happening and subbing and rolling on the ground
All that crap would stop
Into stoppage time now.
A late, late free kick now for the Blues.
McCarthyism as evidenced by the foul on Kovacic
Oh - Willian fires a whisker over the bar.
Free kick from Willian just over and that should do it
It's over and Chelsea defeat Palace 2-0. Up to second ahead of the late matches today and tomorrow.
Kate says, "hello." She's happy to be back for Soccer Saturday.
Off for walkies ahead of the 10 AM matches
Say hello from me
Wow...the next NBC Fest is in Miami on my wedding anniversary weekend...AND I'll BE IN Fort Lauderdale!
Teams coming out at Spurs...NBC off to commercial?
Wow - are you going to try to go down there for it?
I called it!
Soccer Saturday "will begin shortly"
Probably not...I'll have to look at the matches
The starting XI for Leeds today:
Casilla, Ayling, White, Cooper, Dallas, Phillips, Dallas, Klich, Harrison, Roberts, Bamford. Subs: Meslier, Douglas, Hernandez, Berardi, Gotts, Davis, Clarke.
My tv keeps pausing
My SS coverage started for a second and then stopped!
What's a Chelsea Pensioner doing at Spurs!
Back from walkies just in time for the 10 AM action
Forest held on to defeat the Rams 1-0 while Fred's Black Cats will have a long to trip as they have a replay at the Gils in the Cup. It finished 1-1
COME ON GOLD!!!
I want another $5 back
Finally!
WOW! That would be amazing to be able to go to fan fest during your anniversary.
Agreed. About bloody time
Sunderland on draw
Soccer Saturday playing a variety of tributes for Armistice Day around the grounds.
Soccer Saturday at the relegation six pointer at St. Mary's
I do like both sides wearing their traditional kits
They're off from SFL II
The boys don't watch SS
They prefer Goal Rush
I will open up two windows
Goal Rush is the same match as NBCSN...why not show another match!!!
I'll keep it on for the goals
Hobs take the lead at St. Johnny in a relegation six pointer
Some blokes have to go to Edinburgh for the weekend... first goal of the day
Did midweek change the fortunes for Spurs and United?
Goal somewhere
EVERTON take the lead
Bielsa has named an unchanged side from the one that beat QPR 2-0 at Elland Road last weekend. Pablo and Barry Douglass are included on the bench, as they're coming back from injury.
Evil Blades free kick headed out and Gazza tips over a long range effort
Goal somewhere
EVERTON take the lead
Toffees take the lead at St. Mary's
Good start by the Blades
Tom Davies with his first Toffees goal since May 2018 when also scored against Saints. Firs time the Toffees have led in an away match this season
Is Eddie K fit for Leeds? I seem to remember he was injured at one point?
Tranny on top vs Wycombe.
Blackburn have an early corner at ER. It's cleared out by Patrick Bamford.
Merse with a gray beardie!!!!
Ross County on top vs Aberdeen as is the Queen of Hearts vs St Helen Mirren
Eddie's not included in the squad so I assume that he's injured.
PNE have taken the lead against Hudders on the ESPN+ match.
Bob will not be pleased that PNE have taken the lead vs the Terriers
Goal at Deepdale....PNE take the lead!
Are they going to be #50 for the Prem?
Stoke want their manager...why would go from top of the division the rock bottom
PNE are now top of the league.
Why is Number One Son playing. Shouldn't he be serving a three match suspension?
How do you follow Leeds Bob?
