Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Most Influential Albums

I have been following some friends posting their top ten most influential albums. I started an email with my two brothers, Phil and Jon Thornalley and Clark Datchler(JHJ) I have seen lists from Mike and Phil and couple of friends. I was wondering what albums would you pick. I can't really come with albums. I was more of a single here and single there... and Man Utd!
One of Mike's picks was Glen Campbell Live. He then went to say that Glen was at his LHS graduation!! His daughter Kelli graduated the same year as Mike!

David, will you be able to come up with albums or will you be like me?
I KNOW the Dahlgren brothers could come up with 50!! ONLY TEN allowed

Let me know

Nice one, UWS. I've also seen a lot of these kinds of lists on FB recently as people have had more time lately to reflect on their favorites and to listen to their collections.

You're right - I could easily list 50 but I'll do my best to stick with ten. My top albums change all the time but these are the ones that I go back to again and again:

1. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
2. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
3. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
4. Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis
5. Fairport Convention - Liege and Lief
6. Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life
7. Rickie Lee Jones - Debut album
8. Steely Dan - The Royal Scam
9. Massive Attack - Mezzanine
10. Neil Young - Harvest Moon

Loving the other lists, btw. You'll see a lot of overlaps. Neil Young, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Steely Dan.

Donald Fagen's Nightfly album is just outside my top ten, but I've already chosen The Royal Scam. Bill Evans as well. Great stuff!

My list may not contain my favorite records, but it's a list of the records by those bands and artists that really influenced my musical choices and made me aware of the artists that influenced them. Listening to Bowie, made me aware of TRex, Kraftwerk made me aware of Jarre's work, Willie was my intro to country, etc.

Also, there was never a time in my memory where the Beatles for instance didn't exist. So even though their touch is found everywhere in popular music, of any decade I've been alive, I don't count them as influences because they were there before I realized there was music at all.

My top ten influences for me off the top of my head

Kraftwerk-Autobahn
The Indestructible Beat of Soweto-Various
Beleza Tropical-Various
Red Headed Stranger-Willie Nelson
Tutu-Miles Davis
London Calling-The Clash
The Harder They Come OST-Various
Atlantic Recordings-The Detroit Spinners
Chronic Town EP-REM
Ziggy Stardust-David Bowie

I had a difficult time narrowing it down to ten groups/ singles. Here are the groups/singles that made the list for various reasons and not in any particular order:

Steely Dan - Hey Nineteen
JHJ- Shattered Dreams
David Bowie -Let's Dance
Duran Duran -Rio
Neil Diamond- Cracklin' Rosie
Madness- Our House
Eric Clapton- Wonderful Tonight
Madness- Our House
Police- Synchronicity
Doobie Brothers- China Grove

You could definitely send me along the Willie - Red Headed Stranger album. That one is missing in my collection.
