Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

When Will Footie Return?

Hiya, chaps! Another weekend with no footie, sadly. I can't tell you how much I've missed getting up early on a Saturday morning and watching the good stuff along with your companionship. So, I was intrigued by this New York Times article this week that discussed the timeline and conditions for the return of professional sports both in this country and in other countries.

The author Andrew Keh imagines a return to matches albeit played behind closed doors without fans. That's always been an oddity when we've seen that in the past, in the cases of bad behavior on the part of club or countries' fans. But I'd take it right now, wouldn't you lot?

You can read it here: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/16/sports/coronavirus-sports-come-back.html

I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

I don't think the safety of the players for one is assured just because I'm not in the stadium. The players have to practice with each other safe in the understanding that all of their fellow players, the managers, the cone-arrangers, and all the cleaners, cooks, and God-knows who all else are following strict quarantine measures. Add the same for the opposing teams. Then consider the travel your players are subjected to, even in private planes or first class commercial flights. I want footy back as much as the next guy, but I'm not willing to risk one Arsenal player's health to get my fix. It's a non-starter.

After reading the article I disagree with the politicians and sports authorities. Their actions are based on personal greed, not the safety of players or fans. Despite being footie starved, it's not feasible to play matches due to the fact that it's impossible to keep everything sterilized. Would the players practice social distancing during training and matches? Players and staff would have to be tested on a daily basis. It's not realistic to resume football matches or any sporting events until this has completely passed. It's probably not realistic to resume matches until August at the earliest,
