Champions League Thursday!
Hiya, chaps - I'm marooned over in the office this afternoon, but I'm using the CBS All Access to tune into this afternoon's match-up between Leipzig and Atletico. Five years ago, this might well have been a Europa League fixture, but both sides have now entered the big leagues and they face off this evening for the prize of a semi-final berth.
Join me if you're watching today.

Doing well thank you for asking. Really scorching here too and especially after doing a couple hours of yard work. Nice to be inside the air conditioned house
Clyde Tyldsley and Rob Green the announcers
They're off from Lisbon.
Afternoon Chaps. Leipzig, Leipzig, Leipzig!
The winner will face PSG in the semis
The preliminaries are over and we're set to go. I have to say that the CBS feed looks even better on my Mac's widescreen than it does at home.
Welcome, Steve - absolutely - no love for Diego Simeone or anything he represents. His kind are a plague on the game.
Angleino wins a Leipzig corner
And I think there's a decent argument for incarcerating Costa. At least an electronic bracelet.
The corner is headed out then then slightly off target by Halstenberg
Good afternoon I'm in the Leipzig corner fr the reason Bob mentioned and agree with you about Costa
Early corner chance now for the Germans.
Oh - big chance there on the volley blasted over by Halsternberg. Typical center half effort.
House arrest for sure, yeah.
So, what on earth possessed Leipzig to release Werner to Chelsea, and why did he decide to abandon ship while his club was in the latter stages of the CL. I'm really disgusted with that kind of bad business. Trust Chelsea to be involved in it.
U.S. International, Tyler Adams, one of the subs for Leipzig along with Lookman, on loan from the Toffees
The LOB's verdict: Dirty Diego is a bad lad.
Agreed, Steve. He may have left on the date agreed prior to COVID 19, but surely they could have waited till the end of the tournament
Diego Costa is pure evil
I like Tyler Adams a lot. I'm a bit worried about his conditioning because it strikes me that he's often injured. He needs to have sustained fitness and season outside of the sick bay.
Free kick headed by former Citeh defender , Savic and caught by Gulasi
I agree with you. Werner appears to be key to Frank's plan for next season but you would have thought that Chelsea was merely a lateral move at this stage.
Gulasi does well to turn around a shot from Carrasco off nice play by Lodi
I suppose it's gratifying to see Kieran Trippier fitting in so smoothly in Madrid. Used to be that once an English player found that he wouldn't be able to find a decent pie and mash, that was the end of it.
Yeah, Werner was cup-tied for Chelsea's European match, and no longer part of Leipzig's squad. It's a big question mark for Timo's competitive streak.
Not sure why VAR is checking for a penalty. Saul Niguez tripped himself
It speaks for Trippier's professionalism that he turned down big money from Citeh to go to Athletico and prove his ability on different stage.
Agreed. Kieran Trippier appears to have had a solid first season with Athletico.
Kampl called for a foul on Hector Herrera
Timely clearance by Halstenberg from the curling free kick
Dave says "hi" to the LOB crowd tonight. He's on his way to meet up with Matt for dinner in Saratoga. Sounds a bit like a Carly Simon tune to me, eh?
Carrasco got free down the left off a throw and wins an Athletico corner
Hello to Dave and wishing him and Matt a great time in Saratoga
Lodi called for a foul on Laimer
Will do, David. He's texting me pictures of his shorts right now. I'm liable to file a #MeToo complaint!
Reckless challenge by Saul Niguez on Sabitzer
LOL, Bob. Don't blame you, Bob
P Stops off a clash of heads between Savic and Halstenberg
Leipzig's center back has a lot of blood streaming from his head now; Savic has got a goose egg on his brow as well. Both should be able to continue once their wounds are sorted out.
Play resumes after a stoppage of several minutes
Llorente tackled for a corner by Upamecano. The corner from Carrasco is headed away
Great challenge there but Llorente is squawking about it.
Trippier heads out a cross from Laimer for a Leipzig corner
Another Nocito irritating corner.
He would call it a modern day corner
Upemacano can do one. He got away with a mazy run, but do I not like that from a centre back. Stay in your lane mate.
A Barber Shop Quartet of stoppage time minutes
Trippier clears a pass from Angelino for a Leipzig corner
Corner from Nknku headed straight by Upemecano to Oblat
That was a push from Upemacano. VAR would have chalked that off.
Carrasco makes a meal out of a challernge from Klosterman
Free kick from Lodi headed well wide by Savic
Last chance of the half now for Atletico.
It's 0-0 at the half
Head band boy Savic nods well over and Simeone has a pout about it.
There's the interval then.
The second half is underway from Lisbon
Back for the second half now.
It hasn’t taken long for the scrappiness of the first half to return.
The commentator has voiced my fear for this match when he said that it's feeling like a sucker punch kind of game. And then up steps Olmo! One nii Leipzig.
GOAL !!!! DANNY OLMO HEADS LEIPZIG INTO THE LEAD OFF A LONG POSSESSION FROM A NICE CROSS BY HALSTENBERG
Yes! Leipzig take the lead!
This will force Athletico to open up.
Nice team move there, ending with a cross from Sabitzer and a sharp header from Dani Olmo.
1-0!
Now then, this is the kind of match that Atleti hates to play, where they're having to chase things. They're much more comfortable taking a cheap lead off a dodgy goal and then defending it within an inch of their lives.
Nice ball through from Trippier to Llorente but the keeper did well.
Exactly Bob. This is when we see Atheli's players fall around or in the box to get a cheap free kick or penalty.
Upemecano with a long range effort straight to Oblak
And again, Upemacano is high enough up the pitch that he's taking pot-shots. I don't like it one little bit.
Atletico have brought on Joao Felix now who doesn't appear to have started shaving yet.
He's supposedly the next CR. We shall see
Talk about trying to win a penalty. Lodi goes down when Upemecano didn't even touch him and deservedly booked for that
Lovely - Lodi has a flop and he gets a yellow card for his trouble. Well done, referee.
Free kick headed out for an Athletico corner
Gimnez with a nasty challenge on Nkuku which is a waste of a corner for them
Diego Costa with a cheap shot on Upemecano and somehow not booked. The young defender has really frustrated him
Costa should have seen a yellow there. I don't get the commentator chuckling when Costa always plays the prick.
Nasty little dig there from Diego Costa. Should have gotten him a card.
That weedy boy is never the next Christiano. Even when he was a kid with Man United, he had an amazingly strong physique. Joao Felix is no doubt good but in his dreams is he the next Christiano.
Oh - Leipzig nearly broke with purpose there. The game is wide open now.
PENALTY TO ATHLETICO LUCAS KLOSTERMAN BOOKED FOR A FOUL ON JOAO FELIX
GOAL !!! JOAO SCORES WITH A WELL PLACED PENALTY TO TIE IT UP
Bugger. Felix draws a really bad challenge from Klosterman. He'll take the pen he won and scores to equalize.
More Messi than Skippy, btw.
Bugger! Penalty to Atleti now. That was the right call, as Joao Felix was felled.
1-1 then. I'm off home to watch the inevitable extra time action.
Morata on for Dirty Diego. And Tyler's getting his chance as well.
Have a nice ride Bob.
Diego Costa, who has been completely marked out of the game by Upemecano and off the pace, replaced by another former Chelsea striker, Alvaro Morata. Leipzig bring on U.S. international, Tyler Adams , for Lukas Klosterman
Agreed. Have a nice ride, Bob. Hope you make home before the end of the match
Gimenez fouls Danny Olmo
Carasco with a long range effort deflected just wide for a corner off a short corner
Athletico have two shots blocked off the corner
Kampl booked for a soft challenge on Llorente
Patrick Shick on for Danny Olmo
this is definitely going to extra time and probably pens. (sigh)
Haidara booked for a foul on llorente, who made a meal of it
TYLER ADAMS MAY HAVE WON THIS MATCH!!!
GOAL !!! TYLER ADAMS HAS A GIVEN LEIPZIG A LATE 2-1 LEAD WITH A LONG RANGE DEFLECTED EFFORT
That was very "Presidential" from Tyler Adams
How clever was that from Angelino to pick out the late running Adams rather than his two forwards bombing into the box.
It was a nice long ball played wide left to Angelino and he cut it back for Tyler Adams , whose shot took a wicked deflection off of Savic
Giminez with a nasty foul on Sabitzer
Into stoppage time
Sabitzer down with a rib knack from that wild Jimenez challenge.
A quintet of that, which will become half a dozen sue to the stoppage in play
Felipe on for Koke, who was basically invisible this match
Tyler Adams concedes a free kick
Gulasi completely missed it but was bailed out by his defnmse then a shot from Carrasco goes off Klosterman for a corner
Angelino down with supposed cramp. Why waste time?
Back up almost immediatley
Ooof, Keystone Kops stuff from Leipzig's defense under a lot of Athleti pressure.
Angelino down with a spurious "injury."
Gmenez talks himself into the book after Morata fouled Tyler Adams
Gimenez should be off with a second but his first assault that ended Sabitzer's match wasn't cited.
Oh it's all going off now. Athleti thugging it up awfully now. Fake crowd noise is all whistles now.
it's over and Leipzig have defeated the favorites Athletico 2-1 and will face PSG in the semis in a battle of German managers
Good riddance to Athletico for sure.
Excellent! Leipzig defeats the worst thugs in the Tournament. F-off Athleti and take your porn-star-merkin-haired manager with you.
LOL, Steve. I agree 100%
Alright! See you tomorrow for Barca vs. Munich. Cheerio David.
Cheers , Steve. Will be around for that match tomorrow. Enjoy the rest of the day.
CHEERS!
