An Abbreviated Sunday Schedule
It's an abbreviated Sunday schedule for me as the early one involving the COVID-challenged Fulham outfit was postponed was canceled and I didn't really fancy the Newcastle v. Leicester match-up. So, I'm just settling in with a cuppa to join that one and look forward to the big marquee match of the weekend between Chelsea and Man City. Join me for the preliminaries and the big match.

Half way through the first half at SJP and it's still 0-0. Vardy did have it in the net from an impossible angle after rounding Darlow but he was flagged offside.
The first half is winding down. Still 0-0. I'd prefer a Leicester win in this one but a draw is okay, which keeps Newcastle in 15th on 20 points.
Half time: It’s been real. Neither team looks in particularly good nick, with Leicester’s array of attacking talent all seemingly on different wavelengths to each other. Newcastle’s attackers have been isolated too. Midfield has been a sludge of tackles and niggles.
Good morning, Bob. It was a dreadful first half where there were more players down injured and referee, Rob Jones had more touches of the ball than any of the strikers
To be honest the two Daves would prefer a Toon win to keep the Foxes a point further back of United.
Morning Boys
I am back from the store. I was listening to the match on 5Live...I am so happy they aren't blacked out anymore!
I am definitely on the Toon side today
Teams out for the second half
We are off
Good morning, Dave. Glad we're on the same wavelength for this match
Vardy with an early chance....sliced wide
Decent cross by Yedlin... just eludes everyone
I think I want a draw in the late one !
I'll take a draw
Chelsea win
City win
I know City are further back but have games in hand and of course are scary
Steve must be pleased with Arsenal's turnaround
GOAL !!! THE FOURTH PRESIDENT GIVES THE FOXES THE LEAD
Nice team goal that started from the box. Fofana passed to Jonny Evans to Harvey Barnes who went on a run then passed to Vardy ho laid it back to President Number 4 to score
I think a draw in the late one would be the best result. if both could lose that would be better , but sadly not possible
Definitely a great holiday period for Steve and his fellow Gooners. They have been playing some really great football
Albrighton wins a Foxes corner
Corner cleared then the Toon break and Tielemans booked for a nasty foul on Almiron
The Foxes are currently third , a point behind United and Liverpool
The Fourth President not too far with that last shot
On 5Live, they spoke of Bruce and Schmechel having a chat before the match
He is probably Uncle Brucie... they lived next door to each other when he was a kid!
Nice one Dave. Did Brucey say nice to see you, to see you nice?
Shelvey on for Joe Linton
Useless cross by Murphy
He probably did!
No one from the Magpies running into the six!
Exactly.... tap in if your run into the six
Back from the bog. Still on two missed goals for the season
ooh...I think the Foxes are going to have a pen here
VAR will look....it shouldn't be
It isn't given
GOAL... Foxes double their lead
Tielemans with a nice finish
Nice finish
GOAL !!! TIELEMANS SCORES WITH A CRACKING FINISH FROM JUST OUTSIDE THE BOX TO PUT THE FOXES TWO UP
The goal involved three players. Tielemans started it so he finished it. Tielemans won the ball in midfield passed to the Fourth president who passed wide right to Albrighton then passed back to Tielemans to score with that great finish a foot outside the box
Bob will be pleased with this score, but not the two Daves
Vardy rattles the bar but a late flag comes up
OH! Vardy with a rocket of a shot off the bar, but offside yet again
Vardy's been offside more than a persistent trespasser
A much needed attacking move for the Toon as Andy Carroll on for Yeltsin. A striker for a right back. A defensive switch from the Foxes to counter the Toon change as Soyuncu is on for the Fourth President
James Justin booked for a foul on one of the Longstaffe brothers about a foot outside the box
GOAL !!!! FREE KICK HEADED AWAY THEN ANDY CARROLL SCORES A CRACKING VOLLEY THAT WAS A GREAT FINSH. GAME ON AS IT'S NOW 1-2
Andy Carroll off the bench... finally scores for the Toon
Never offside.
Doesn't matter about the guy in the middle...he was was onside
Game on
Great substitution from Brucey
10 years between Magpie goals for Big Andy
I always thought he could have been such a great player!
Blew it going to Liverpool!
Andy Carroll with a shot blocked and Kasper just fails to prevent a corner
He's also had an injury ravaged career which has seriously disrupted his career
Andy Carroll down with a head injury. That would be a huge blow for the Toon
Is Desmond on his way to SJP?
OH! Cally Wilson with an out stretched volley saved by Kasper as the offside flag is raised
Wilson in.... offside flag up
I don't get how players are clueless to their positioning sometimes!
I got called offside but more times than not... I kept onside
Barnes.... great save by Darlow
Saved by his noggin
OH! Harvey Barnes through and well blocked by Karl Darlow for a corner . It came off his face as the Toon coughed up possession
Considering these are the players at the top of the profession they make lots of really fundamental errors
Another time no one is in the six yard box....NO ONE THERE
CRASH THE GOAL
Totally agree!
Don't see doctors or pilots making simple mistakes!!
Into stoppage time. A Barber Shop Quartet of those minutes
If pilots were offside as many times as Vardy they would have tons of crashes. If doctors misplaced all those passes then think of all the misdiagnosed patients there would be
That should do it
I am off for walkies
I'll be back
It's over at SJP and the Foxes hold on to win 1-2 at SJP and are now third, a point behind Pool and United
I think I'm going too before the match
Morning, boys - I'm just back from a refreshing Sunday morning shower to settle in for the big match.
Leicester have hung on for another good away win for them thanks to goals from Maddison and Tielemans. It keeps them a point behind Liverpool and United in third.
If it weren't for Citeh's massive squad size, they'd be forced to ask for an FA postponement, as Ederson, Torres, Garcia, Walker, Gabby Jesus and Tommy Doyle have all tested positive for COVID.
Ridiculous - Citeh should be fining those players and the FA should be fining Citeh for COVID breaches.
The teams for today's match, then:
Chelsea (possible 4-3-3) Mendy; Azpilicueta, Zouma, Thiago, Chilwell; Kovacic, Kante, Mount; Ziyech, Werner, Pulisic.
Substitutes: Kepa, Rudiger, Emerson, Jorginho, Gilmour, Havertz, Abraham, Giroud, Hudson-Odoi.
Manchester City (possible 4-2-3-1) Steffen; Cancelo, Stones, Dias, Zinchecnko; Rodri, Gundogan; Silva, De Bruyne, Foden; Sterling.
Substitutes: Carson, Mendy, Harwood-Bells, Mbete, Fernandinho, Aguero, Mahrez, Delap.
Referee Anthony Taylor.
Back from walkies and agree with what you're saying , Bob.
Welcome back, David!
It's a prem debut for U.S. international keeper, Zak Steffen in the Citeh goal
All the buzz ahead of this one is that American keeper Zach Steffen is having his debut for Citeh deputizing for the COVID affected Ederson.
A great tribute to Tommy Docherty AKA the doc
They're off from SB.
What's your preference in this one today? I'm completely neutral, as it doesn't really affect Leeds.
Thanks, Bob. Great to be back. Hope it's a good match because it's a lovely day, perfect for outdoor activities
I would prefer both teams to lose but will take a draw
I am back as they kicked off
Very chilly out there... snow coming our way too
I agree with David
I posted my preferences before
Radio and telly almost exactly the same time
Back pass picked up by the American keeper!!
Indirect free kick inside the box
Zak Steffen gifts Chelsea a free kick by picking up an intentional back pass or was it for hand ball just outside the box?
Love it that a Pep keeper doesn't use his feet!!
Pep thinks a keeper's footwork is more important that saving
Ball outside the box...it shouldn't have been
Free kick from Ziyech deflected for a corner
Chelsea with back to back corners
Corner headed on by Werner then headed out for another corner
End to end stuff right now
The match is just starting to take off now. End to end stuff.
Both teams break but are off on the final ball
My GBB Timo Werner has gotten Frank's confidence today; Tammy Abraham and Kate's favorite Frenchman Ollie Giroud are on the bench.
Olly can come off the bench and score a couple , especially if Zak Steffen is lacking confidence
Mount hit the ball out wide... I thought it was the wrong ball
Modern day cross
Another one... just over Pul's head
Cross from Ziyech just too high for Pulisic to make contact
There's no point in Chelsea knocking crosses in today. Werner has about as much chance of winning a header against John Stones as I have of winning the Boston Marathon.
Useless out on the Chelsea's right
What is going.... Arsenal wore red yesterday!!
Chelsea in Blue and City in Blue.... both in their colors!!
HOW REFRESHING
I have observed that in both matches today that all the teams have worn their traditional colors
LONG may it continue
VAR check there for a penalty as Werner tumbled. Nothing doing.
Apparently the ref has been assigned a Chelsea match since the Cup Final....where he sent off a Chelsea man
I think Seagulls vs Wolves both teams wore their first team colors. That's four matches in a row watched with that. I'm shocked!
I wonder if the League Cup semi final between the two Manchester clubs will be able to take place, with COVID running rampant in the Citeh camp.
Pep talking rubbish about Foden
He thinks he is such a genius!
I wish he'd just bugger off!
I need Chillwell to get a card today
KDB... should have scored there!
OH! Unusual for KDB as he misses a sitter with just Mendy to beat off a nice through ball from Cancelo
Oh - KDB ghosted into a great position in the area. Great first touch but then shoots wide.
I think the semi will take place due to Citeh's large squad. I guess cup competitions have different COVID rules than league matches, but Citeh should have enough available players
GOAL! Gundogan rifles in an opener for Citeh!
GOAL !!! GUNDOGAN GIVES CITEH THE LEAD
Goal.... City take the lead
Of course ARLO having kittens
Its wasn't sensational!!
GEEZ
GOAL! Citeh are rampant now as Foden kncoks in the second!
0-2!
GOAL !!! FODEN PUTS CITEH TWO UP AS HE BEATS MENDYY AT THE NEAR POST
Missed the second
Did Arlo have another litter?
Chelsea are stunned by those two goals.
He certainly did - I don't know how his voice holds out over the course of the season. He must go through a load of lozenges.
We need City not to get on a roll
We need them to drop points!
I'm loving this for the Chelsea point of view
Now Chilly misses the header and allows Sterling in. Earns a corner.
City would be a point behind the top TWO if they win their game in hand
Both goals came off lengthy Citeh possessions . The first the ball was played wide left to Zinchenko and cut back to Phil Foden and passed to Gundogan for a well placed shot . The second that ball was played wide left to KDB and his pass was diverted in at the near post by Foden
Chelsea have dropped to eighth now, below Villa on GD. Mind you, Villa still have two matches in hand.
Foden fouled...was that a yellow.... that is what should be carded!!
Citeh currently fifth . They will move up to fourth ahead of the Spuds if they score four without reply. Chelsea currently eighth and as things stand will move further down the table if Saints get a result tomorrow
Why didn't Puli shoot!!
Let's hope the Saints do get something tomorrow!!
Zack Steffen could have gone to the bog and Citeh would still have a clean sheet
A bit better from Chelsea there but they run out of gas when the crosses come in. I don't know how Frank can look at this and think that his tactics are working.
Absolutely Dave. Will be rooting for the Saints tomorrow
City's matches in hand are at home to Villa and away to Everton
So much for Citeh being depleted due to COVID. Hasn't hurt them today. Hope it does on Wednesday
United's opening game of the season away at Burnley has finally been rescheduled of the day after Our Bob's b-day
No news of when City will host the Villans
Citeh should be favorites in those two matches but they're not exactly freebies
The match vs Burnley is a must win for United . We can't mess up like we did vs Burnley at OT January last year
Sterling wide open.... takes an age... then hits the post.... KDB is there to hit the net
GOAL !!! KDB PUTS CITEH THREE UP ON THE BREAK. SUPERB BREAK AND AWFUL DEFENDING FROM CHELSEA
GOAL! Sterling escapes; he's held up but finally hits the bar with his shot and KDB mops up.
0-3!
I HATE that City are winning by three
BUT
I LOVE Chelsea losing by three
Almost a fourth!
What were Chelsea thinking? Sterling all alone in his own half and only Kante back chasing. Forced him wide , Sterling took forever to shoot then hit the post then KDB scored on the rebound
Oh - Foden was free at the back post now. Should have hit the target and maybe scored a fourth.
Phil Foden with a free header heads over
I think KDB score his first from open play this season
Citeh need three more to move ahead of Spurs into fourth place. Will they be able to achieve that today?
At least Chillwell has -5.5 for my opponent so far
Nice stat. That would only be good in golf
Chilly frozen today based on that stat.
Top Six as it stands
Liverpool 33 +17
Man Utd 33 +9....goals matter OGS!
Leicester 32 +10
Spurs 29 +14
Man C 29 +12.... and counting with a game or two in hand
Everton 29 +6
City almost in for number four
Again.... a nice move but not world stopping!
Missed sitter from Gundiogan of a wide open goal as Chelsea were sliced apart. Solo run by Sterling then passed to KDb who passed to Foden ,w ho laid it on a plate for Gundogan
A pair of stoppage time minutes
Werner has no idea what to do with the ball as he went in the box
Pulisic booked for a rash foul on Cancelo after he lost possession
Pulisic does get a yellow... wonder if the defender did earlier...that was a yellow... deliberate
Somehow it's a Chelsea free kick that's headed on then headed straight to Zack Steffen for his first save of the match
HT at SB
All City
Citeh are three up at the half against a wretched Chelsea side
Half-time: An extraordinary scoreline at the interval with Citeh leading Chelsea 0-3 at Stamford Bridge. The crazy thing is that Citeh are missing six players and are playing without a recognizable center forward. Yet, they're ripping the Blues apart on their patch.
No changes by Frank
He's making a point....you suck...improve or be embarrassed
Back for the second half. Great points Bob and Dave
Arsenal only 3 points behind Chelsea
we are off
The second half is underway from SB
Lamps looks like someone that rattled every teapot and mug in the dressing room at the half
Horrible giveaway from Kante and fortunately for Chelsea a miss kick from KDB as he looked likely to score
As things stand it's one point in the last nine for Chelsea and out scored 7-2
So much for Frankie looking for his players to sort out the mess. No improvement at all
Chelsea giving the ball up in modern day places
Kante booked for a foul from behind on Sterling
Mendy does well to tip over a header from Rodri off the free kick from KDB
Wide open header well saved by
Mendy
Phil Foden volleys wide from the corner
Chelsea not playing any better today than the Baggies did vs the Gunners yesterday
That scuffed Chelsea shot is not exactly going to mount a Chelsea challenge if Zack Steffen will have easy saves like that
Ball across the six.... AGAIN... no one inside the box....MADNESS
Bloody Pep
I was telling Kathy in the car earlier.... I remember listening to the football on Saturday afternoons on Radio 2
The commentators were my eyes!
As I was listening to them today....they commentate as if they were on TV.... screaming as a shot was taken....have no idea if it went in
That's true Dave. When We listened on the radio it wasn't much different than watching the match. The descriptions were detailed and spot on
Ziyech offside when he should have read the line . A basic error. what if pilots were offside that often? They would have lots of crashes
Hudson-Odoi on for Ziyech who did practiucally nothing this match
Citeh break and Mendy did well to read a pass from Sterling as he rushed out to gather at the feet of KDB. It started with Happy Gilmour gifting Citeh possession. Frankie not so happy
3 pm kick off
Tradition
I was thinking about how far back it went
Did they have 3 o'clockers before floodlights? First floodlight league match was Pompey vs Newcastle in '56
Factory Act of 185 restricted factories.... had to close by 2 pm
Chelsea's next match in exactly a week vs Morecambe and Wise. That's if it's not postponed as the L2 side have had their past several matches postponed due to a COVID outbreak in their squad
The 3 o'clock black out on telly in Britain has been suspended during Covid.... I hope they go back to it.... have the fans go to games
I'm back from a bite of lunch to follow the last twenty minutes. No surprise here - Chelsea haven't been able to get a goal back and Citeh haven't pressed for more goals. Boring.
Sterling runs in the box....no idea what to do with it
I'm guessing Saturday matches always kicked off at 3 PM until the start of the Prem in 1992. Did it change before then? Perhaps in the 80s when they started playing Sunday matches
I thought so but what about the darkness in the winter months
KDB screams like a little girl!
I had a feeling the telly blackout had been lifted during COVID based on the marathon number of matches each day. Don't see fans back at matches until a large number have been vaccinated
From the end of the Second World War until 1983, the year when league matches began to be televised live, there were generally 11 top-flight matches played each Saturday at 3pm (in a 22-team division). This time slot appears to have arisen as a long-term consequence of the 1850 Factories Act, which required work to stop at 2pm on a Saturday — the 3pm
kick-off allowed workers to fill their resulting leisure time.
This was from the Times.... so this is pre Floodlights
That's true. Not sure when they played before floodlights. That's a good point
I know that David but I am saying when it is over... will the blackout continue
Tony just posted that Gerry of Gerry and the Pacemakers has died at the age of 78
I left England in the Summer of 1983 and all twelve top flight matches were played at 3 PM. I guess that changed my first season back in the U.S.
I do seem to remember that there were Sunday matches when we were kids. Weren't they the ones showed on ITV's "The Big Match" with Brian Moore as the lead commentator? Or were those on tape from the day before and they showed them a day late? I don't remember.
I left the same time and I remember hearing from brothers about the first live match... Forest vs someone
I was just wondering about when no floodlights were available
Was 3 o'clock still the time
It's just a guess, but I think that once COVID is over televised matches will go back to the normal schedule.
I've totally lost hope in Werner, my GBB - it's another disastrous pick from me. He's hopeless.
They were all from Saturday Bob
We had Match of the Week with Gerry Harrison
Always a day late
That's really sad news. I loved listening to Gerry and the Pacemakers.
Ferry across the Mersey
That's correct Dave I remember watching the ITV matches a day after they were played
Given up the Prem.... watching it on the computer
Got the Giants on the telly...
TOUCHDOWN GIANTS... a must win!!
The first live league match had to have been after I moved back to the U.S. I'm guessing it was still at 3 PM. That was shortly after the fourth channel was introduced. I was there for that
Ferry across the Mersey is a classic
The Giants were my dad's favorite NFL team
it was the 83-84 season
Tottenham vs Forest on ITV
BBC's first match was Man Ut vs Spurs
Missed the bloody extra point
