An Abbreviated Sunday Schedule

It's an abbreviated Sunday schedule for me as the early one involving the COVID-challenged Fulham outfit was postponed was canceled and I didn't really fancy the Newcastle v. Leicester match-up. So, I'm just settling in with a cuppa to join that one and look forward to the big marquee match of the weekend between Chelsea and Man City. Join me for the preliminaries and the big match.

Half way through the first half at SJP and it's still 0-0. Vardy did have it in the net from an impossible angle after rounding Darlow but he was flagged offside.

The first half is winding down. Still 0-0. I'd prefer a Leicester win in this one but a draw is okay, which keeps Newcastle in 15th on 20 points.

Half time: It’s been real. Neither team looks in particularly good nick, with Leicester’s array of attacking talent all seemingly on different wavelengths to each other. Newcastle’s attackers have been isolated too. Midfield has been a sludge of tackles and niggles.

Blogger manunitedrules said...

Good morning, Bob. It was a dreadful first half where there were more players down injured and referee, Rob Jones had more touches of the ball than any of the strikers

10:10 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

To be honest the two Daves would prefer a Toon win to keep the Foxes a point further back of United.

Morning Boys
I am back from the store. I was listening to the match on 5Live...I am so happy they aren't blacked out anymore!

I am definitely on the Toon side today

Decent cross by Yedlin... just eludes everyone

10:27 AM

I think I want a draw in the late one !

I'll take a draw
Chelsea win
City win

I know City are further back but have games in hand and of course are scary

Steve must be pleased with Arsenal's turnaround

GOAL !!! THE FOURTH PRESIDENT GIVES THE FOXES THE LEAD

10:30 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Nice team goal that started from the box. Fofana passed to Jonny Evans to Harvey Barnes who went on a run then passed to Vardy ho laid it back to President Number 4 to score

10:33 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think a draw in the late one would be the best result. if both could lose that would be better , but sadly not possible

10:33 AM

Definitely a great holiday period for Steve and his fellow Gooners. They have been playing some really great football

The Fourth President not too far with that last shot

Back from the bog. Still on two missed goals for the season

ooh...I think the Foxes are going to have a pen here

VAR will look....it shouldn't be

It isn't given

GOAL... Foxes double their lead

Tielemans with a nice finish

10:48 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Nice finish

10:48 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !!! TIELEMANS SCORES WITH A CRACKING FINISH FROM JUST OUTSIDE THE BOX TO PUT THE FOXES TWO UP

10:49 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The goal involved three players. Tielemans started it so he finished it. Tielemans won the ball in midfield passed to the Fourth president who passed wide right to Albrighton then passed back to Tielemans to score with that great finish a foot outside the box

10:51 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Bob will be pleased with this score, but not the two Daves

10:52 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Vardy rattles the bar but a late flag comes up

10:52 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Vardy with a rocket of a shot off the bar, but offside yet again

10:52 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Vardy's been offside more than a persistent trespasser

10:53 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A much needed attacking move for the Toon as Andy Carroll on for Yeltsin. A striker for a right back. A defensive switch from the Foxes to counter the Toon change as Soyuncu is on for the Fourth President

10:55 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

James Justin booked for a foul on one of the Longstaffe brothers about a foot outside the box

10:56 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !!!! FREE KICK HEADED AWAY THEN ANDY CARROLL SCORES A CRACKING VOLLEY THAT WAS A GREAT FINSH. GAME ON AS IT'S NOW 1-2

10:57 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Andy Carroll off the bench... finally scores for the Toon

Never offside.

Doesn't matter about the guy in the middle...he was was onside

Game on

10 years between Magpie goals for Big Andy

I always thought he could have been such a great player!

Blew it going to Liverpool!

10:59 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Andy Carroll with a shot blocked and Kasper just fails to prevent a corner

10:59 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

He's also had an injury ravaged career which has seriously disrupted his career

11:00 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Andy Carroll down with a head injury. That would be a huge blow for the Toon

11:01 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Is Desmond on his way to SJP?

11:02 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Cally Wilson with an out stretched volley saved by Kasper as the offside flag is raised

11:03 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Wilson in.... offside flag up

I don't get how players are clueless to their positioning sometimes!

I got called offside but more times than not... I kept onside

Barnes.... great save by Darlow

11:03 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Saved by his noggin

11:03 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Harvey Barnes through and well blocked by Karl Darlow for a corner . It came off his face as the Toon coughed up possession

11:04 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Considering these are the players at the top of the profession they make lots of really fundamental errors

11:05 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Another time no one is in the six yard box....NO ONE THERE

CRASH THE GOAL

11:06 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Totally agree!
Don't see doctors or pilots making simple mistakes!!

11:06 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Into stoppage time. A Barber Shop Quartet of those minutes

11:06 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

If pilots were offside as many times as Vardy they would have tons of crashes. If doctors misplaced all those passes then think of all the misdiagnosed patients there would be

11:08 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

That should do it

I am off for walkies
I'll be back

11:10 AM

11:11 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Morning, boys - I'm just back from a refreshing Sunday morning shower to settle in for the big match.

Leicester have hung on for another good away win for them thanks to goals from Maddison and Tielemans. It keeps them a point behind Liverpool and United in third.

11:14 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

If it weren't for Citeh's massive squad size, they'd be forced to ask for an FA postponement, as Ederson, Torres, Garcia, Walker, Gabby Jesus and Tommy Doyle have all tested positive for COVID.

Ridiculous - Citeh should be fining those players and the FA should be fining Citeh for COVID breaches.

11:20 AM

Back pass picked up by the American keeper!!

Indirect free kick inside the box

11:35 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Zak Steffen gifts Chelsea a free kick by picking up an intentional back pass or was it for hand ball just outside the box?

11:36 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Love it that a Pep keeper doesn't use his feet!!

Pep thinks a keeper's footwork is more important that saving

Ball outside the box...it shouldn't have been

11:36 AM

11:39 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Mount hit the ball out wide... I thought it was the wrong ball

Modern day cross

Another one... just over Pul's head

11:40 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Cross from Ziyech just too high for Pulisic to make contact

11:40 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

There's no point in Chelsea knocking crosses in today. Werner has about as much chance of winning a header against John Stones as I have of winning the Boston Marathon.

11:41 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Useless out on the Chelsea's right

11:41 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

What is going.... Arsenal wore red yesterday!!
Chelsea in Blue and City in Blue.... both in their colors!!

HOW REFRESHING

11:42 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I have observed that in both matches today that all the teams have worn their traditional colors

11:42 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

LONG may it continue

11:42 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

VAR check there for a penalty as Werner tumbled. Nothing doing.

11:42 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Apparently the ref has been assigned a Chelsea match since the Cup Final....where he sent off a Chelsea man

11:43 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think Seagulls vs Wolves both teams wore their first team colors. That's four matches in a row watched with that. I'm shocked!

11:44 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I wonder if the League Cup semi final between the two Manchester clubs will be able to take place, with COVID running rampant in the Citeh camp.

11:44 AM

Pep talking rubbish about Foden

He thinks he is such a genius!

I wish he'd just bugger off!

11:44 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I need Chillwell to get a card today

11:45 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

KDB... should have scored there!

11:46 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Unusual for KDB as he misses a sitter with just Mendy to beat off a nice through ball from Cancelo

11:46 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - KDB ghosted into a great position in the area. Great first touch but then shoots wide.

11:46 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think the semi will take place due to Citeh's large squad. I guess cup competitions have different COVID rules than league matches, but Citeh should have enough available players

11:47 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

GOAL! Gundogan rifles in an opener for Citeh!

11:48 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !!! GUNDOGAN GIVES CITEH THE LEAD

Of course ARLO having kittens

GOAL !!! FODEN PUTS CITEH TWO UP AS HE BEATS MENDYY AT THE NEAR POST

11:51 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

11:51 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Chelsea are stunned by those two goals.

11:52 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

He certainly did - I don't know how his voice holds out over the course of the season. He must go through a load of lozenges.

11:53 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

We need City not to get on a roll
We need them to drop points!

I'm loving this for the Chelsea point of view

11:53 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Now Chilly misses the header and allows Sterling in. Earns a corner.

11:54 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

City would be a point behind the top TWO if they win their game in hand

11:54 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Both goals came off lengthy Citeh possessions . The first the ball was played wide left to Zinchenko and cut back to Phil Foden and passed to Gundogan for a well placed shot . The second that ball was played wide left to KDB and his pass was diverted in at the near post by Foden

11:55 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Chelsea have dropped to eighth now, below Villa on GD. Mind you, Villa still have two matches in hand.

11:56 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Foden fouled...was that a yellow.... that is what should be carded!!

11:57 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Citeh currently fifth . They will move up to fourth ahead of the Spuds if they score four without reply. Chelsea currently eighth and as things stand will move further down the table if Saints get a result tomorrow

11:57 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Why didn't Puli shoot!!

11:59 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Let's hope the Saints do get something tomorrow!!

11:59 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Zack Steffen could have gone to the bog and Citeh would still have a clean sheet

11:59 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

A bit better from Chelsea there but they run out of gas when the crosses come in. I don't know how Frank can look at this and think that his tactics are working.

12:00 PM

0-3!

I HATE that City are winning by three
BUT

I LOVE Chelsea losing by three

Almost a fourth!

12:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

What were Chelsea thinking? Sterling all alone in his own half and only Kante back chasing. Forced him wide , Sterling took forever to shoot then hit the post then KDB scored on the rebound

12:06 PM

From the end of the Second World War until 1983, the year when league matches began to be televised live, there were generally 11 top-flight matches played each Saturday at 3pm (in a 22-team division). This time slot appears to have arisen as a long-term consequence of the 1850 Factories Act, which required work to stop at 2pm on a Saturday — the 3pm
kick-off allowed workers to fill their resulting leisure time.

This was from the Times.... so this is pre Floodlights

That's true. Not sure when they played before floodlights. That's a good point

I left England in the Summer of 1983 and all twelve top flight matches were played at 3 PM. I guess that changed my first season back in the U.S.

I do seem to remember that there were Sunday matches when we were kids. Weren't they the ones showed on ITV's "The Big Match" with Brian Moore as the lead commentator? Or were those on tape from the day before and they showed them a day late? I don't remember.

It's just a guess, but I think that once COVID is over televised matches will go back to the normal schedule.

I've totally lost hope in Werner, my GBB - it's another disastrous pick from me. He's hopeless.

The first live league match had to have been after I moved back to the U.S. I'm guessing it was still at 3 PM. That was shortly after the fourth channel was introduced. I was there for that
