Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

New Year Footie!

Happy New Year, everyone! We start 2021 with a couple of champagne fixtures this afternoon. Everton take on West Ham at Goodison in a tea-time fixture. That's followed by Man Utd hosting Villa at Old Trafford. Let's hope that our teams all get off to a winning start in the New Year. Join me for all the fun and games today, won't you?

Everton start the day in fourth and can go second with a win against the Hammers today. West Ham are just above Leeds in 10th, level on 26 points but with slightly better goal difference.

I'll take a draw in this one.

The most eyecatching team news there is the presence of James Rodriguez on the Everton bench. He was ripping it up earlier in the season but has been sidelined for the past month.

Of course today also marks the opening of the January transfer window. So, what you lot like your team to pick up or get rid of?

Do you think I should start De Gea or Meslier in goal this week?
Who will make more saves? Who will get more points?

I wish United would get a decent defender or midfielder....NOT at the end of January....at the beginning!!

I am sure OGS will play Fred and McTom to combat Grealish....should United buy Grealish before kick off?

Cavani banned for today, City in the LC and Watford in the FA Cup....he'll be available for Anfield

I guess I don't want a Toffee win to keep them behind United

Since leaving Goodison, Hammer manager Moyes has not enjoyed his visits back to his old patch
He left Everton in 2013 and has returned with Man U, Sunderland and West Ham.... lost all four times

DLC in one goal shy of matching his 15 goals from all of last season.... he has gone five games in all competions without scoring tho

12:28 PM

What was the offensive Tweet - do you know? I tried to find it everywhere but no one was publishing it.

Everyone's angry at Leeds right now because the club pushed back at a pundit's idiotic comment about our promotion run.

12:28 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Just a reminder that there is a relegation six pointer in the Championship as Not a Big Club hosts the Rams. It wasn't predicted to be a relegation six pointer before the start of the season

So United won the league in 1908 and 2008. They also won in 1911 and 2011.
Will someone else do it this decade?

1920 WBA....they didn't
1921 Burnley....NO
1922 Liverpool.... could do
1923 Liverpool... could do
1924 Huddersfield....NO
1925 Huddersfield.....NO
1926 Huddersfield....NO
1927 Newcastle.... probably not
1928 Everton... probably not

We've just heard that our neighbor two doors down has COVID now. She's on oxygen at home because out local hospital is all full up with COVID cases. Scary times - I am going nowhere.

1929 The Wednesday won the league
1930 Sheffield Wednesday won the league

I'm going to google if they were the same club

12:34 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Can't wait for that match tomorrow morning. Now that we've got those six points from Burnley and WBA, we can relax and go out and have some fun.

12:35 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

In 1929 the club officially changed its name from The Wednesday Football Club to Sheffield Wednesday Football Club under the stewardship of manager Robert Brown. However the name Sheffield Wednesday dates back as far as 1883: the former ground at Olive Grove had the name Sheffield Wednesday painted on the stand roof.

12:36 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Sorry to read about that, Bob. Scary times. I have known of several people in our neighborhood who had COVID and recovered as well as several relatives. Everyone needs to get the vaccine ASAP

12:38 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Not quite yet, mate. We always have a mid-season slump in February. We could easily go through a month or six weeks where we lose every game.

But for right now, we're seven points better off than I thought we needed to be.

12:39 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The Wednesday or Not a Big Club will be more likely to play in L1 than win a top flight title whether it be a Wednesday or any other day of the week

12:39 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I was listening to some guys on the radio talking about The Doc

They said that they youthful United that got promoted in the mid 70s and finished third behind Liverpool and QPR and making the Cup Final.... attacked like the Leeds of today

12:40 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Leeds needs to continue what they are doing. They will need to be careful of those counters tomorrow because Jose's lads are usually clinical on those

12:41 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Who are you mate.... Karen Carney?

12:41 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I moved to England midway through the Doc's last season with United but the few times I saw his teams played they sure played that way

Blogger United We Stand said...

Coppell and Hill on the wings!!

12:45 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

LOL! No - I am not.

12:45 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

12:46 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Craig Dawson down for the Hammers.I think he lost his footing and may have twisted something

12:48 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Dawson has gone down very painfully after slicing a clearance – it looks like he might have done something bad when swinging at the ball. The physios are on.

12:49 PM

I think Balbuena would be the natural replacement for Craig Dawson

United's game in hand has finally been arranged

Kick off at Turf Moor will be on Tuesday, January 12 at 8:15

So.... in January

1 Villa H
6 City H semi
9 Watford H Cup
12 Burnley A
17 Liverpool A
20 Fulham A
27 Blades H
30 Arse A

1:03 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

So... the game in hand is before the Anfield visit....United could be on top when they visit Anfield

1:04 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's been a boring start to the 20321 footie matches. It's 0-0 at both Goodison and Hillsborough.

1:04 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

OGS better not rest players for the Anfield match... the Burnley match is important too

1:05 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

1:10 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Still scoreless at Hillsborough in the 40th min

1:11 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's 0-0 both on the scoreline and in attempts on target. That's pathetic

1:11 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That's an extra match added on to a congested January schedule.

1:11 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I didn't like the player who bragged about kicking another player in the face. I read that he will be a senior next season. Hope he gets banned from that

1:13 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Pablo Fornals called for a foul on Bernard just outside the box

1:14 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Free kick from Siggy breaks all the way to Bernard across the pitch and he wins a Toffees corner

1:15 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Decent effort from Bernard....That was the first shot on target of 2021!!
Almost took a whole half!!
WHY DON'T TEAMS SHOOT!!

The object of the game is to score!

1:16 PM

BTW, did you guys ever watch The English Game on Netflix ?

Nick Ames of the Guardian says of that half: "I’ve watched hundreds upon hundreds of Premier League games, as I’m sure have many of you, and even in today’s goldfish-memory times I’d struggle to think of a half in which less has happened."

1:23 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I suppose we'll have to wait until 7:30 tomorrow morning to get some proper entertainment. Most Premiership teams have forgotten the whole point of this game.

1:24 PM

No Pogba

First Hammers shot on target of the match as a rocket of a free kick from Bernard is pushed away by Pickford despite it being right at him. Then the Hammers win a corner

Corner headed away then Fornals with a long range shot straight to Pickford

1:51 PM

GOAL!!! SOUCEK GIVES THE HAMMERS A LATE LEAD

2:15 PM

Soucek had an earlier chance that was well saved by Pickers but then it rebounded to Cresswell who shot wildly but the shot was deflected home by Soucek.

0-1 West Ham!

2:16 PM

Everton will have to pull their fingers out now - they've been really toothless today.

2:17 PM

It all started with a long free kick from Darren Randolph headed on by Antonio then Jammy Lenko. Several passes later a pass from Jammy Lenko found Soucek whose shot was well saved by Pickford then it broke to Cresswell from 25 yards out. His powerful shot came biazarrely off the heel of Jerry Minor and broke to Soucek who blasted ion from close range

Pogba out wide left but at least attacking

Useless cross by him....of course

3:11 PM

Leeds certainly caught the McTomain poisoning early on.

Martial with a decent shot saved

Well, our season was never going to be based on getting a result from trips to Old Trafford.

OH! De Gea does well to turn around a shot from John mcGinn on the volley off a great cross cashed in from Matty of a pass from Jack Grealish

Obiwan stays on his feet but doesn't cross it... Fred with a shot... over the bar

He always gets into shooting positions... but seldom scores!

I cam remember he scored an equalizer at OT vs Wolves when I was down in Naples FLA
I didn't see it...I heard it
Has he scored any more?
