The Last Match of 2020
All the talk in the footie world today is about COVID and a possible shut-down, but for now we've got one last match to watch today and perhaps the promise of more to come on New Year's Day and the following weekend. It's Newcastle v. Liverpool tonight and I'm going to enjoy it like it's the last live football that we'll get for a while. Join me for all the action this afternoon.

Interesting Instagram post from Jose Mourinho: “Match at 6pm … We still don’t know if we play. Best league in the world,” he wrote.
Liverpool come into this one top of the league but hardly impressive, especially in their last outing against WBA.
Newcastle, on the other hand, have been uninspiring this season under Steve Bruce. Expect them to push the bus out.
Steve Bruce has made one change from the side that lost 2-0 at Manchester City the other day: Callum Wilson replaces Miguel Almiron.
There’s a bit of good injury news for Liverpool, with James Milner returning to the starting line-up and Thiago Alcantara among the substitutes. Nathaniel Phillips starts in place of the injured Joel Matip.
Brentford come from behind to beat Bournemouth 2-1 and move into second place in the table.... Tottenham should be a doddle for them midweek
Good afternoon Bob and Dave. Here to join you while footie is still being played
I think I picked the Bees to finish first . Not too far off
COME ON YOU TOON!!!
COME ON UNITED!!!
COME ON YOU MAGPIES!!!
COME ON YOU GEORDIES!!!
Swans host the Reading Railroad at the same time the Toon host Pool. Swans will be back in second with a win
I second that Dave
It won't happen but NO ONE is saying that Newcastle will win!
HOW I HOPE IT THEY DO!
numpty Dahlgren wants a Pool win!!
This fixture would be a great match to watch... two 4-3 in a row!
One of them REALLY helped United! Same again please
Newcastle (3-4-2-1) Darlow; Clark, Fernandez, Schar; Yedlin, M Longstaff, Hayden, Ritchie; Murphy, Joelinton; Wilson.
Substitutes: Dubravka, Lewis, Krafth, Shelvey, Hendrick, Almiron, S Longstaff, Carroll, Gayle.
Liverpool (4-3-3) Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Phillips, Fabinho, Robertson; Milner, Henderson, Jones; Salah, Firmino, Mane.
Substitutes: Kelleher, R Williams, N Williams, Wijnaldum, Thiago, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Shaqiri, Minamino, Origi.
Referee Paul Tierney.
Afternoon, boys - hope you're having a good day.
Yes, indeed, I want a Liverpool win. Here's why. Liverpool are a top half side; Newcastle and Leeds are bottom half sides. I want our rivals to lose.
I do understand the flap about Steve Bruce's comments this week, because they speak to a lack of ambition on his part. It's one thing for a newly promoted club to merely have survival as a goal, but after a few years in the league, you have to kick on a bit, otherwise you're just making up the numbers.
Just a reminder that at 5
Just a reminder that Wenger is the guest today on Men in Blazers
Teams in the tunnel at St. James' Park.
Sorry it's at 5:30
I'm going to DVR that for Kate - she's a huge Wenger fan.
Teams coming out.... I'm wearing my 1968 European Cup Final shirt today for good luck!!
I bought it at Old Trafford
We are off
And we're set to go. Looks like a rainy evening on Tyneside.
A bit of snow in the air too
Decent start from the Magpies
Callum Wilson with a speculative crossshot that Alisson had to tip over.
Newcastle go dinosaur style from a free kick at the half way point. Come on, Brucey - you're better than that. Didn't you see what happened to Fat Sam's side yesterday?
Oh - Wilson from another free kick heads just wide. Alisson was scrambling a bit.
This start has shown again that Liverpool are not the dominant side that they were last season.
Fabinho tried to get in a header from a corner. Didn't quite get there but got a head knock for his trouble.
Maner oh Mane Ritchie heads out a cross for a corner
Are Liverpool dominating possession? It hasn't seemed it
Great of jersey, Dave. Retro and cool
It's fairly even so far - I'm surprised. Newcastle are rubbish.
Great run by Wilson.... damn!!
Saved!
OH! Nice solo run by Cally Wilson then a kick save at the near post by Allison for a Toon corner
Unlike pool vs the Baggies, United showed how to grind out a result on an off day. According to my watch the winning goal was scored in Fergie time
Definitely Fergie Time yesterday. He was in the stands, so who knows?
Comfortable save by Karl Darlow from Milner on his return to SJP
More good stuff from Newcastle
They are creating some chances
Decent move from Newcastle there through Wilson again. Yedlin should have done better.
Yeltsin with a shot deflected for a corner off nice one touch Toon passing
The Toon have been playing decent footie . Definitely better than the bottom five for sure. The rest I don't know
I wore my 66 World Cup shirt yesterday
An injury Pool can ill afford as Andy Robertson is down . It was accidental from Yeltsin
Dave those are definitely collector's items. The Toon will have good luck today
Andy Robertson up and able to continue and goes on a speedy solo run on the counter but the cross from him was well off
Cally Wilson more like Woodrow as he was too easily dispossessed to end the Toon threat
I bought 1999 Champions League shirt.... it is still in a collector's box
I have to take Shadow for a walk....he is at me!!
WOW ! Your closet is starting to sound like a sports museum
Cheers, Dave. Have fun and stay warm
Callum Wilson is pulling onto Phillips at every opportunity, with a fair bit of success. He’s been the best player on the pitch by a mile so far.
Oh - big chance for TAA at the back post. Fluffed it.
Poor shot from TAA easily saved by Karl Darlow off a lobbed pass from Milner
Agreed, Bob. Wilson will definitely want to take advantage of Phillips's inexperience
This has been a much more even contest than I'd expected. I suppose a draw wouldn't be the worst result.
Mane with a cross headed out by Fernandez for a Pool corner
A draw would be an outstanding result for both of us
If this finishes a draw we would have to defeat Villa by nine goals to go top on NYD
Oh - Bobby Chompers was in there but his touch let him down.
The Toon have scored 76% of their Prem goals in the second half this season. That'
s the best in the league. Sounds rather encouraging
Isaac Hayden with a side footed shot from 25 yards out well wide
Oh - now Mo Salah ghosts in but Darlow did so well to save at his feet.
OH! Salah beat the offside trap and Darlow rushed out to nick hi shot around for a corner . Great long ball from Fabinho
But for those finger tips Pool would have taken the lead
More pressure from Liverpool now.
Mane wins a corner off of Fernandez
The corner is headed out for another by Hayden
Darlow punches out the corner from TAA .
Great last ditch clearance by Yeltsin for a corner off a pass from Bobby Chompers intended for Salah
A minute of stoppage time
The first half winding down now - Steve Bruce will definitely be the happier manager. Newcastle have done more than just frustrate Liverpool - they've had some chances.
OH! Darlow does well to turn around a header from Bobby Chompers
It's 0-0 at the half at SJP
I am back from a chilly walk in time for the teams kicking off
The second half is underway from SJP as announced by Jim Proudfoot and Rob Green
Welcome back. Glad you're back warm and comfy for the second half
Back for the second half. I'm feeling a bit goal starved.
Swans vs the Reading Railroad still 0-0 as the second half will begin there soon
It's been snowing here again this afternoon. I'm going nowhere!
Time for a tea time snack?
Listening to 5Live... They are announcing the top 15 football events in 2020
Celtic's Quad Treb was in the top ten, Lucy Bronze's Fifa PotY as well
Clnton Morrison thinks it will be 1 Liverpool Champs, 2 Leeds Champs 3 Scot's Euro qualification
I'll let you know what wins
Sunny and about 80 here, but highs will only be in the low 60s tomorrow
Naughty boy Fabinho picks up a yellow card there for a block on Yedlin.
Good break from Ncastle...foul by Fabiho... carded
The Toon break and a book for a less than Fab off the ball foul on Yeltsin on a Toon break
USELESS FREE KICK!!
Doesn't make it into the box!!
Drives me nuts
Another free kick chance
Thanks, Dave. it will be interesting to see the outcome for the top events.
#6 in the list.....Leeds Utd Promotion!
A little low in my book
The voting was in the website. I think I voted
Agreed, Dave. I would have had it in the top three
Simon Grayson is in the studio....he's not happy it is that low
Mane heads into the side netting
Yes, nearly time for a tea-time snack. Might have one with Kate after the match.
Mane oh Mane! Pool should have taken the lead as a free header from a corner was just wide
Of course, our promotion was one of the highlights of the year for me.
#5.....Scotland qualify for the Euros
Newcastle are attacking Pool when they can
That's about right for #5
Here's an interesting stat from the Guardian blog: if this does end in a draw, Liverpool will have dropped as many points in the first 16 league games as they did throughout last season.
Talking about the Scots no surprises as five out of six SPL matches were played only Livvy vs Aberdeen was postponed.
Rangers won 0-2 at St. Helen Mirren
Celtic defeated Dundee United 3-0
Mane earns a cheap one and Hendo can float one in now.
That's an interesting stat, more significant for how fantastic Pol were last season.
Just a reminder that if this finishes a draw then United go top NYD if they defeat Villa by nine goals
Premier League says they have no plans to stop play
Their protocols are working
They're certainly beatable this season but I don't see any of the top teams as consistently good.
#4....Ronaldo scoring 100 international goals
Oh - Mo Salah did everything right there - except for score!
Both teams about to bring a sub on.It loks like a rain/ snow mixture on Tyneside
Salah.... misses a glorious chance...long may it continue
Salah gets a pass from Bobby Chompers , turns a defender then shoots wide with just Darlow to beat
Almiron on for Murphy now for the last 25 minutes or so.
Winnie also about to come on.
Almiron on for one of the Murphy twins
Curtis Jones is one making way for Winnie.
Schaar, not Sonny heads out for a Toon corner as Wijnaldum, a former Toon, is on for Curtis Jones
Firmino misses a big chance at the back post
Bobby Chompers heads well wide off the corner
Bobby Chompers' neck tattoo looks a bit like Rudy Giuliani's dripping hair from the press conference last month. Not a great look.
Toon's defense have seen Pool miss their fair Schaar of chances
LOL, Bob. That's a hilarious but accurate description
Come on Magpies..... 20 minutes!!
Thiago about to come on
No scoreless matches between these two since 1974.... they met in the 74 Cup Final as well
#3....Messi's goals for Barca
Thiago Alcantara on for James Milner
Most f Messi's goals were scored against poor sides . Some of the viewers must not be too knowledgeable
Free kick chance for Liverpool.... stop hugging him!!
AWFUL free kick... doesn't beat the wall!!
now Mane is fouled on the other side of the box
Atrocious free kick driven into the two man Toon wall. It wasn't exactly Hadrian's Wall
Another Pool free kick. This time midway between the box and the touchline
Cleared
Thiago with a decent shot blocked
Matt Phillips picks up a late yellow for taking out Joelinton.
#2... Bayern Munich's Champions League
Winning every game
Nathaniel Phillips booked for a late challenge on Almiron
ooooh.... Newcastle with a great chance... well saved
Oh - great save by Alisson from the header by Clark. Close call!
Free kick from Lionel Ritchie headed by Cieran Clark and superbly turned around by Allison
I was thinking Bayern might be number 1
How are Liverpool laboring with these guys. We demolished them 5-2 at our patch a couple of weeks ago.
Just off the line from Newcastle!
Oh - how did that one stay out?!
Commentator says they are knocking on the door....so is Newcastle
Nearly half the Toon goals have come in the final quarter of an hour. It's Brucey time. Wearing the watch given to him as a birthday gift from Fergie
COME ON NEWCASTLE!!
Oh - Winnie got behind the Newcastle back four but his cross was to no one.
Lionel Matt Ritchie not exactly singing a Toon as he's rep[laced by Jamaal Lewis in a like for like swap
Matt Richie comes off to be replaced by Jamal Lewis.
#1 .... Liverpool win the title....barf
Pool don't deserve three points....just like United yesterday
Great save by Darlow!
Oh - another brilliant save from Darlow! Robertson thought he had scored.
OH! Superb save by Darlow from Salah off the corner from Robertson.
Agreed, Dave. Number one is nauseating.
Corner to Newcastle coming into the 90th minute
Punched clear
4 added minutes
Four minutes of stoppage time for Liverpool to nick all three points.
Will Liverpool do a United
A barber shop quartet of stoppage time minutes
Salah off and Shaquiri on for the waning moments.
Shaquiri on for Salah on the final roll of the dice from Klopp
Newcastle had a chance of going forward... Almiron goes the wrong way
Liverpool have got to get it forward in a hurry now.
Liverpool not showing much urgency
Come on Toon....Hold on
I can hear Klopp screaming
Liverpool just pass it around and the ball never gets inside the box
Lovely Jubbley!!
I don't think Newcastle have just sat back!
BLOW UP REF
Jurgen Klopp looking really frustrated now - Liverpool have only picked up 2 points from 6 over the festive period.
It finishes 0-0 at SJP
IT IS OVER!!
Liverpool are now only three ahead of United.... with United having a goal in hand!!
Newcastle definitely earned that point.
United need to win by 10.... and we are top!
agreed. Well done TOON!
Take care boys
Talk to you guys in 2021
GOOD RIDDANCE 2020!!
TTFN
Cheers Dave! Great chatting and agreed about 2020
Swans vs the Reading Railroad finished 0-0. Swans in third a point behind the Bees
I enjoyed it, boys. Let's hope we're back here watching some more of the good stuff on Friday.
Enjoy your New Year's Eve celebrations!
