The League Cup Quarter Finals Arrive!
Just when we thought that there was too much holiday football to possibly absorb, here comes the League Cup Quarter Final stage! It all starts today with the Ugly Stepsisters match-up of Brentford v. Newcastle at 12:30pm EST and then the big marquee match-up between Arsenal and Citeh at 3pm. The action is all on ESPN+; I'll be monitoring the early one but settling in to enjoy the big one at 3. See you then!

Afternoon, chaps - first up today is Brentford v. Newcastle. A lot of pre-match attention has been on Ivan Toney, who was a colossal flop at Newcastle but has ripped it up for Brentford in the Championship. He's not in the starting eleven tonight, as he's being rested for the busy Championship schedule over the holidays, but it will be interesting to see if he comes off the bench.
Here's the team news for the match:
Brentford: Daniels, Thompson, Pinnock, Sorensen, Fosu, Da Silva, Janelt, Ghoddos, Forss, Marcondes, Canos. Subs: Raya, Goode, Norgaard, Jensen, Toney, Mbeumo, Stevens.
Newcastle: Darlow, Yedlin, Hayden, Clark, Lewis, Murphy, Sean Longstaff, Shelvey, Fraser, Wilson, Almiron. Subs: Carroll, Joelinton, Ritchie, Gayle, Hendrick, Krafth, Gillespie.
Referee: Robert Jones
Interestingly, the only PPPer in the pool who has any interest in this match is the iconoclastic Pink Kits, who has Brentford as the losing finalist. And who would bet against them getting one over on Newcastle today?
Good afternoon, Bob. Here to join you for the LC quarters. Will Pink Kits be watching the Bees hum a Toon?
The match is underway from West London
Long range shot from Ghodos a few yards wide. He's the replacement for Benhrama who left to join the Hammers
Brentford v. Newcastle is a go!
Free kick from Ghodos headed away for a Bees corner
Afternoon, David - great to have you on board. How were the birthday celebrations? I enjoyed the photos on FB. But who was the handsome young gent joining you - Jacquelyn's boyfriend, perchance?
Corner headed high and wide by Ethan Pinnock
Glad you enjoyed the photos. The person sitting next to her is her cousin
The Bees last defeated the Toon in 1948 in the second division. Now is as good a time as any to record a first win in 72 years
Oh - Callum Wilson was in there but Daniels did well in the Brentford goal.
Decent close range block by Luke Daniels from Cally Wilson who chested down a pass and went past Sorensen
Ah ha! Glad you had a good time of it.
Wee Ryan controls a long ball then a powerful shot is tipped over by Luke Daniels
I'm back from lunch and see that the match is still at 0-0. This one could easily go to pens.
GOAL! Brentford take the lead and Pink Kits is dancing in the living room!
GOAL!!! JOSH DA SILVA GIVES THE BEES THE LEAD . THE BEES PASSED DOWN THE LEFT THEN PASSED TO SERGIO CANOS WHOSE CROSS WAS POWERFULLY VOLLYED IN BY DA SILVA UNDER THE DIVE OF KARL DARLOW
Former Toon flop , Ivan Toney on for Sergio Canos. The Bees top scorer would love to show his former club that they were wrong not to give him a fair chance
I bet Pink Kits is . Some extra PPP points on the horizon?
If the Bees hold on then they will be in their first ever LC Semi
Now here comes Ivan Toney, the Newcastle-born striker that the Toon let go. He'll be eager to add to Brentford's lead.
Well, if they can hold out for the last fifteen minutes and then maybe get a favorable draw in the semis, it's possible.
Last roll of the dice for Brucey - Andy Carroll coming on to add his X Factor. I'd have Joelinton on.
What's happened to Jacob Murphy - I once thought he was a really exciting prospect, but his career has stalled at Newcastle. I can only imagine what he'd be like playing in a Bielsa side.
Carroll barges a teammate out of the way and lashes one well over the bar.
Jacob Murphy would be a great fit for LUFC
A Barber Shop Quartet of stoppage time minutes. Will Pink Kit s be singing a victory song to the Toon of a Barber Shop Quartet?
Norgaard does gaard his goal by blocking a shot from Andy Carroll
Oh - Ivan Toney had a chance to polish off Newcastle. Darlow denies him the moment.
Ivan Toney would have loved to have scored
It's over and the Bees have defeated the Toon 1-0 to clinch a place in their first ever LC semi
Lsst chance saloon for Newcastle -
no, that's it - Brentford have knocked out the Premier Leaguers. Great result for them! They're into the semis!
Kool and Gang are on to celebrate Brentford's big win and Pink Kits is having a wee dance now at the prospect of two valuable points in the PPP. She needs them as she's currently stuck in Sheffield United territory with a mere four points.
Next up is the big marquee match-up. I've just had a chat with the Gooner. He's not feeling terribly confident about Arsenal's chances in this one but who knows? It's a one off.
The team news out of Maine Road tonight:
City: Steffen; Cancelo Dias, Laporte, Zinchenko; Rodrigo, Fernandinho, Silva; Mahrez, Jesus, Foden
Subs: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Gundogan, Torres, Sterling, Aguero
Arsenal: Runarsson; Mustafi, Gabriel, Kolasinac; Soares, Elneny, Ceballos, Willock, Maitland-Niles; Lacazette, Martinelli
Subs: Leno, Tierney, Mari, Smith-Rowe, Pépé, Balogun, Nkettiah
Referee: S Attwell
As expected, both sides are resting several of their starters.
The most intriguing figure tonight is Gabriel Martinelli, who returns to the Arsenal side after sustaining a bad injury back in March. He looked an excellent attacking prospect last season and scored quite a few in last season's League Cup run.
Wahay - the coverage has finally started on the Plus. I'm definitely in the Gunners camp tonight. No love for the Citizens.
An American keeper in goal for Citeh - Zach Steffen. Never heard of him.
Back for the MOTD as it's the Gunners vs Citeh, a repeat of the Cup semi where Arteta was victorious vs his former boss, Pep
GOAL !!!! JESUS HEADS IN A CROSS FROM ZINCHENKO OFF PASS FROM PHIL FODEN
Sorry, Steve. Still plenty of time for the Gunners to comeback.
Oh dear - gabby Jesus has put Citeh into an early lead here. Could be a long evening.
Zak Steffen is normally the starting keeper for the USMNT. He was on loan to Dusseldorf last season and was signed from the Columbus Crew.
Arsenal haven't really got going yet.
Feranandnho with a shot deflected off of fellow Brazi, Gabriel, for a corner
La Porte closes the door as he tackles Joe Willock for a Gunners corner
I missed that corner but read in La Cazette that the corner from Ceballos was headed well wide
Mahrez with a shot off of El Neny for a Citeh corner
The corner from Mahrez headed inches wide by La Porte
El Neny booked for a foul from behind on Jesus just outside the D after Jesus went on a solo run
The Free kick from Mahrez is off the wall for a corner
Mustafi booked for a grab on Jesus as the holiday cards start to accumulate for the Gunners
Citeh really dominated affairs so far.
Ceballos called for a foul on Mahrez. Joe Willock heads the free kick over for a Citeh corner
Bit of a mix-up at the back for Arsenal. Leads to a free kick for Citeh.
Ceballos down for the Gunners ahead of the corner. Looks like he was slapped by Fernandinho. The corner was headed wide by Ruben Dias
I read in your favorite French periodical that Lacazette has a slight back injury. Should be able to continue.
Arsenal are level, or so I read in your favorite French periodical. Great cross from Martinelli!
1-1!
GOAL !!!! THE GUNNERS TTIE IT UP. I MISSED IT BUT READ THAT A GREAT CROSS FROM MARTINELLI FROM THE LEFT WAS SCORED WITH A WELL PLACED HEADER TO TIE IT UP
That was an accurate read, mate. It was against the run of play, but I'm sure Steve won't mind at all
Oh dear - Martinelli has gone down in a heap. He's only just come back from injury. Steffen really clattered him.
Half time: Arteta will count himself lucky that his side are level after not doing much at all. Citeh don't look to have the same killer instinct that they once had, otherwise they'd have put two or three in at this point.
1-1.
It's 1-1 at the half at the EM
Teams coming back on to a blast of the 90s hip hop anthem "Jump Around." We'll see about that in the second half.
The second half is underway from the EM
Martinelli gave the knee a go in the second half but he's going to have to come off. Pepe on for him.
Martinelli hobbles off and is replaced by Pepe
A combination of Gabriel and El Neny called for a trip of Mahrez inches outside the box
GOAL !!! A HOWLER FROM RUNNARSSON AS THE FREE KICK FROM MAHREZ WAS STRAIGHT TO THE ICELANDIC KEEPER BUT FUMBLED INTO THE ROOF OF THE NET
Citeh now lead 1-2.
Oh - bloody hell - it's a howler from Runnarsson in the Arsenal goal. The free kick from Mahrez was reasonably well struck but the keeper for some reason went to punch it rather than to catch it. In doing so, he's put it in his own net.
1-2 Citeh
Phil Foden with a brilliant finish for 1-3. Citeh starting to pull away here.
On the replay, VAR would have ruled Foden offside but we don't have that in the League Cup, so a goal it is.
GOAL CITEH LEAD 1-3! GREAT CHIP BY PHIL FODEN. PASS CAME FROM FERNANDINHO TOOK A NICK OFF OF JOE WILLOCK AND THE REPLAY SHOWED FODEN WAS JUST OFFSIDE. NO VAR SO THE GOAL STANDS
Agreed, Bob. It will be hard for the Gunners to come back from two goals down
Arsenal will need a goal back in a hurry now, while avoiding conceding any more.
Bernie Sanders picks up a yellow for that hack on Ceballos.
Another Arsenal change - Elneny coming off and an academy youngster Smith Rowe coming on. Why not give the kids a run out?
I missed that last Gunners attempt but read in La Cazette that a through ball from young Emil Smith-Rowe as shot into the side netting from a difficult angle
Like for like as Ferran Torres on for Weekend at Bernie's on a Tuesday evening
Peter Gabriel tackles Mahrez for a Citeh corner
Mahrez goes down under Gabriel's challenge but nothing doing from the ref.
GOAL !!! CORNER TAKEN SHORT TO PHIL FODEN AND HEADED IN BY A WIDE OPEN LA PORTE TO HEAD CITEH INTO A 1-4 LEAD
Oh dear - it's 1-4. Laporte ghosted in to nod home Foden's cross.
This one is done and dusted . Sorry Steve
Really feeling for Gooner and other Arsenal supporters now. It's not looking good tonight. More pressure on Arteta.
Like for like as Aguero is on for Jesus
And just to add insult to injury, on comes Sergio Aguero.
The final rolls of the dice for both managers. Kyle Walker for Rodri while another Gunners youngster gets a run out as Florian Balogun comes on as a Gunners sib. I missed that change but read about it in my favorite newspaper
The last time Citeh scored four away to the Gunners was in 1961 and they lost that 5-4! Citeh have never scored five away to the Gunners
Pepe should have hit the target there. Curled it wide.
Oh - Smith Rowe got to the by-line and pulled back an enticing ball but no one was running in on it
Into stoppage time as Runnarsson saves a near post shot from Mahrez
Oh - Pepe weaved his way through pulled a good save out of Steffen.
It's over as Citeh win 1-4 and are in the semis . Sorry, Steve
Full-time. Citeh romp it in the end. They're on course for another League Cup final now. Anyone would want to avoid them on that evidence.
The big match tomorrow is the Toffees vs United. Hopefully there will be several of us chatting for that match
That's it for me, too, mate. Nice chatting with you. I'll be around tomorrow to roar on United with you. Enjoy your evening!
Cheers, Bob. Great chatting with you and look forward to chatting tomorrow. Enjoy your evening too.
CHEERS!
