End of Semester Footer!
Wahay! I'm celebrating having finished my Fall 2020 semester grading this morning by settling in to watch the footer. We've got a couple of intriguing Week 13 fixtures on offer. First up is Wolves v. Chelsea. Wolves are 13th and just three points above Leeds, so you know where my allegiance will be this afternoon. Come on, you Blues! After that, it's Citeh v. the Baggies and of course I'm hoping that Citeh's strikers fill their boots and knock WBA to a ton. Join me if you're around this afternoon and fancy some footer, eh?

Sad news out of Blighty today of the passing of former Liverpool manager Gerard Houlier. RIP.
The other big news today is that London is set to move from Tier 2 to Tier 3, so fans won't be allowed in the stadia any more. Sad stuff.
Good afternoon, Bob. Delighted that you are finished for the semester. Gload you can relax
Sad to read about Houllier. I just checked online and saw that he is 73 years old
Afternoon, David - great to have you on board. Now that I've finished my grading, I'm really looking forward to enjoying some footer.
The teams news is in from Molineux:
Wolverhampton: Rui Patricio, Boly, Coady, Saiss, Nelson Semedo, Dendoncker, Neves, Marcal, Pedro Neto, Silva, Daniel Podence. Subs: Hoever, Ait Nouri, Vitinha, Ruddy, Traore, Kilman, Otasowie.
Chelsea: Mendy, James, Zouma, Thiago Silva, Chilwell, Havertz, Kante, Mount, Pulisic, Giroud, Werner. Subs: Kepa, Rudiger, Jorginho, Abraham, Kovacic, Gilmour, Azpilicueta.
Referee: Stuart Attwell.
According to Dave's text there are four Prem clubs hosting matches. I'm coming up with the two Liverpool clubs, St.Mary's ,and the AMEX
Teams out on the pitch at Molineaux. One would think that Chelsea is the favorite. A win puts them top ahead of the big match at Anfield tomorrow
They're off from Molineaux
Nice one touch passing from Wolves and Semedo with a long range shot deflected for a corner
Good corner from Neto , but anything but a Pre Saiss header that is high and wide
I'm back from a lovely lunch now and settling in for the match. Come on, you Blues!
Olly fouled Dendocker about thirty yards from goal.
Welcome back. What's on the menu,, mate?
This is around the time of the season when the sack race heats up. There are several managers in the running, including of course Slavan Bilic, whose Baggies will be like lambs to the proverbial slaughter today against Citeh.
We made some white, kale and kielbasa soup the other day, along with some Irish soda bread. So, it's was leftovers of that.
Oh - great run and cross by Pulisic there but Werner couldn't capitalize on it.
Kai Havertz has a shot blocked off Marcal for Chelsea's first corner of the match
That's a delicious lunch. I'm jealous
Basedon club expectations I have Arteta ahead in the sack race with OGS second. I don't have Bilic up there because the Baggies are only three points from safety. That may change as the season progresses.
How are the Hannukah festivities going?
I do agree with you that the Baggies will lose. I scanned their barcode at the self checkout and comprehensive loss was printed on the register screen
Arteta is definitely on a knife's edge. The vast majority of the callers into the 606 show on Sunday were in favor of sacking him.
They're doing well, thank you for asking. I'm picking up Melanie tomorrow so she will be here for the last two nights and my birthday which falls during Hannukah this year
Oh - Ollie should have snapped up that free header. Couldn't get over it.
Olly heads over off the corner from Chilly
Any big plans for your birthday tomorrow?
Agreed, Bob. I think Arteta has lost the dressing room. Not sure who will succeed him. Perhaps Ralphie?
Mendy does well to turn around a shot from Neto. Corner headed away
Long range shot from Ruben Neves straight to Mendy
My birthday is Thursday. Nothing big due to the pandemic. Three points at Bramall Lane would be a great birthday gift
Merely by kicking off, Wolves have jumped from 13th to 11th on 18 points just ahead of both Palace and Newcastle. Citeh are still in 9th on 19 points. Very tight and congested in the middle of the table.
How are the Christmas preparations?
Sorry, mate - I thought it was the 16th for some reason. Well, United should be on board to get a big birthday win for you against Soton.
Definitely tight this season. I'm sure the usual powerhouses will be on top as the season progresses
Well, we've been really efficient this year. We're used to the rhythm of getting everything done (presents bought, cards sent, packages mailed) before we leave for Virginia, which is usually the weekend coming up. So, we've still done that but we're not traveling so next week we're going to be relaxing instead.
No probs, mate. We're actually at Bramall Lane. I'm sure you would love us to put them to the sword
You've definitely earned a relaxing break after a highly unusual semester
My family has loads of December birthdays. Steve's on the 4th, my Mom's was on the 18th, Melanie's is on the 23rd. When I was married to Karen, hers was on the 16th. I was run ragged!
That reminds me. Chris Wilder must be giving Arteta competition in that sack race. How could I forget him?
Yeah - I meant Sheffield. Definitely need to put them to the sword. I'll be around roaring you on.
VAR check now for a handball on Coady.
It's a busy birthday month for us too. Mine is on the 17th as was my dad's, my father-in-law is on the 9th,and Jacquelyn's is on the 21st
The check is complete and it's no penalty. Shame.
A penalty would be harsh because I don't see how a player can be called for hand ball while he's using his arms for leverage.
A penalty would have been harsh, IMHO.
If Chelsea wins they will be first, but no matter the result from Anfield, they won't be by the end of the day tomorrow
Pusilic is upended once again and Chelsea have a dangerous free kick.
Semedo concedes a free kick to Chelsea
Free kick from Chilly Pre Saissly headed away then a cross from Thiago Silva shows why he never was played as a winger
This match has been a bit flat.
Pulisic wins a Chelsea corner
Pulisic is such a handful on the ball.
Agreed, Bob. It's been like a chess match
Another Pres Saiss defensive header for a Chelsea corner
Not without interest, but not exactly ManYoo v. Leeds. Can't wait for Sunday's War of the Roses resumed.
Oh - Zouma off the bar! He's such a threat from set pieces!
OH! Header from Zouma off the corner crashes off the bar then the rebound is shot wide
No stoppage time as it's 0-0 at the half.
Half-time then. 0-0. Hoping the Blues can find their scoring touch in the second half.
Sunday's match will be a great occasion
Teams coming back out now. One change for Wolves with Dendoncker off and Otasawi on.
Second half underway and Dendocker replaced by Teenage American and academy grad, Owen Otasowie
Not sure about Wolves' new signing Fabio Silva. He's your typical short Portuguese forward, more like a false #9.
GOAL! Giroud volleys home, just over the line.
Might have to be a VAR check on this both for the offside and the goal-line tech.
Rui Patricio will rue that one wriggling under his arm.
A poor mistake by Rui Patricio as the volley by Olly was fumbled inches over the line . Nice cross by Chilly off a nice long diagonal from Werner
Chelsea top ahead of Spurs on goals scored, but that will change after tomorrow
I believe that puts Chelsea top now, as they're level on points and GD with Spurs but have scored more goals now - 26 to 24.
The goal is Chelsea's only shot on target of the match
Silva thought he had scored but he's flagged offside.
Pulisic is fouled again and he's getting up gingerly. Not good.
Young Fabio Silva with a goal disallowed for offside off a nice counter involving Ruben Neves, and Neto. Silva started the counter in the Wolves box
A bit better from Wolves during this period - Chelsea inevitably dropping back to protect their lead. It's the Lampard way. He learned at the knee of Mourinho.
Mason Mount earns the first yellow card of the night from Stuart Atwell.
Wolves American teenager is mounted down which results in a Chelsea booking. Adama Traore on For Fabio Silva
The typical Adama Traore cameo in the second half. He's on for Fabio Silva - not a good sign for Wolves fans. They're really struggling to score goals this season.
Who is the American teenager on Wolves team?
Giroud hacks down Otasowie and Wolves can chuck a free kick into the box again now.
Traore looks like he's in some trouble after that Ollie hack.
Good cross in from Neto but Boly couldn't quite profit.
GOAL !!! WOLVES TIES IT UP WITH A GREAT FINISH FROM DANNY PODENCE
GOAL! Chelsea have paid the price for taking the foot off the gas. Podence with the deflected effort that beats Mendy at the near post.
Chelsea are still arguing that it shouldn't have been a corner in the first place. Frank will no doubt be whining about that in the post-match interview.
Now then - do either of these sides have it in them to push for a winner in the last twenty minutes.
Frankie Lamps goes to his bench looking for a winner now - Kovacic and Abraham on for and Giroud.
Tammy earns a cheap free kick in a good area.
Reece James with a trademark curler. Not enough pace on it to beat Rui Patricio.
Oh - Wolves should have scored there. Sameda wasn't greedy enough.
Blimey - Wolves have themselves a penalty now!
Looks like a dead cert one - Reece James tripping Neto up.
Referee Atwell is going over to the monitor now - and it's been overturned.
Chelsea break quickly and could easily have scored.
My apologies for the lengthy absence. I just finished feeding my father-in-law lunch
I agree with the decision to overturn the penalty. There wasn't nearly enough contact to warrant a penalty
Chelsea currently in fourth place with Wolves in eleventh
Chelsea really pushing for a late winner now. They've finally come to life after falling asleep for most of this half.
The final roll of the dice from Nuno the Spiritly Saint. Partinha on for fellow Portuguese , Danny Podence. Patinha the seventh Portuguese player to appear for Wolves this evening. Talk about a contingent!
A quintet of stoppage time minutes. I t will be six or seven as Boli is down
Into stoppage time as there is an injury break.
How's your father-in-law doing today?
He's doing fairly well today. His short memory is very little but in good physical health
Chelsea will pump this free kick into the area. Cleared out.
GOAL! Neto wins the match for Wolves right at the death!
2-1!
GOAL !!! NETO HAS WON IT FOR WOLVES ON THE COUNTER. NOW 2-1
Not really the result that I would have wanted, as it rockets Wolves up the table and away from Leeds territory. But I can't say that I care much for this Chelsea side.
cHELSEA DOWN TO FIFTH PLACE WITH wOLVES UP TO NINTH
I'm thinking the same. Serves Chelsea right
By Thursday Chelsea could be as low as eighth place
It's over and Wolves come from behind to hand Chelsea a surprise 2-1 defeat
That's it - Wolves have nicked it off Chelsea. Can't say that they didn't deserve it either. They were really good in the second half as Chelsea drifted away.
Citeh vs the Baggies kicks off in about five minutes
Not much time between matches as they're off from the Etihad.
The Baggies normally wear yellow and green stripes away from home. Not sure why they're wearing yellow and red stripes. The announcer is correct that it looks like fruit salad
We're quickly on to the late one - here are the teams:
Manchester City (4-2-3-1): Ederson; Cancelo, Aké, Ruben Dias, Mendy; Rodri, Gündogan, De Bruyne, Sterling, Foden; Jesus
Subs: Steffen, Walker, Agüero, Laporte, Bernardo, Torres, Mahrez
West Brom (3-5-2): Johnstone; Ajayi, Gibbs, O’Shea; Furlong, Gallagher, Sawyers, Livermore, Phillips; Diangana, Grant
Subs: Button, Peltier, Ivanovic, Krovinovic, Grosicki, Robinson, Austin
Referee: Peter Bankes
VAR: Martin Atkinson
Citeh begin in 10th now, with Wolves rising to 9th. WBA of course are second bottom, which is where I hope they end up.
The announcer said we would want to know what Lamps had to say about the defeat. I'm not interested
What's happened to the traditional green and yellow striped WBA away kit? This one is hurting my eyes!
I'm confident that you will get your wish. Citeh should have a field day against the bar codes
I'm sure that Frank has lots of excuses for a second loss on the trot.
They scanned that kit and it rang up as fruit salad for tuppence.
Frank has turned into quite the cry baby
First corner for Citeh then. Let's hope it zips in.
Rdri wins a corner off of Kieran Gibbs
Corner from KDB kicked up by Jesus then Ruben Dias fouls Connor Gallagher
Citeh up to sixth by kicking off. If they defeat the Baggies by seven or more goals then they will overtake Chelsea for fifth place
Karlan Grant turned Nathan Ake and his shot was turned around by edersno for a corner
Some matches in the Championship. PNE one up at Barnsley as are the Evil Lions at Bristol City, which is not idle gossip
Bob will be pleased that Forest is one up vs rock bottom Not a Big Club. Forest three points clear of the drop zone
KDB will swing a free kick in now....
Bit of a waste that one.
Luv it! Long may it last.
The Tractor Boys being held 1-1 by struggling Richard Burton while the Real Dons have a real lead at the SOL
Posh up to second as they have taken the lead at the Fake Dons
Cancelo was free on the right again but his cross only found Johnstone.
Salford up to sixth as they have taken the lead vs table topping Newport
Carlisle only a point behind Newport, on top vs Jayne Mansfield
Foden wins another Citeh corner now. Come on!
Southend bottom of the Football League despite taking the lead vs Grimsby. Now just two points from Safety, but in reality three due to a horrendous goal difference
Rochdale two up at rock bottom Wigan. Dale out of the drop zone all the way up to sixteenth place
I remember playing the Shrimpers many times in L1 during our sojourn there.
Hornets vs the Bees in a the stinging Derby. No sting as it's still 0-0
Fairly ponderous stuff from Citeh so far.
Shrimpers famous for holding the great 1979 Pool side 0-0 in the FA Cup on a snow covered pitch. I listened to that on the radio
Harrogate takes the lead at fifth place Exeter
That'a playoff dogfight then, isn't it?
Abe Lincoln down to fourth place as he trails vs the struggling Shrews. Table topping Tigers drawing 1-1 at the Tangerines
Hornets vs Bees is. It's third vs sixth
Black Cats tie it up vs the Real Dons while Rochdale is three up at rock bottom Wigan
Who do you reckon will go up from the Championship this season?
WBA just trying to frustrate Citeh. Another corner now.
Rodri heads just wide off the corner from KDB
Rodri and Ake went for the same header and somewhat got in each other's way.
West Brom essentially have a back six out of possession. In fairness, it is working for them so far. They have been workmanlike if not inspirational.
Kate's doing her family Christmas cards but came out from the office and was temporarily blinded by the West Brom kit!
The Baggies surely can't hold out like this for another hour can they?
It's tough to say. It's really tight at the top. I picked the Bees Hornets, and Swans in the PPP and am confident it will be those three
GOAL !!! GUNDOGAN GIVES CITEH THE LEAD.
Oh - that's a lovely team goal from Citeh. Sterling with a one-two and then a cross over to Gundogan.
1-0 Citeh!
Easy peasy. Sterling played a one two then his pass was easily tapped in by Gundogan
Well, that WBA's Plan A out the window. What else does Slavan have up his sleeve?
I'm delighted for you and you did say that the Baggies wouldn't be able to hold on. Spot on with that assessment
Gallagher tries one from distance. Didn't quite curl enough.
Just wide by Connor Gallagher
I sympathize with Kate. Hopefully the loss of sight is temporary. Please tell her that it took a few minutes for us to get used to that
West Brom have only scored 9 goals in 13 matches, so you don't really fancy them getting back into this one. Only Burnley and Sheffield Utd have scored fewer goals.
Tangerines take a 2-1 lead vs the Tigers, who are still top, but only by the slightest goal difference ahead of Posh
Rochdale now up by a Barber Shop Quartet at rock bottom Wigan . That quartet singing you're going down
Cancelo hits one and Johnstone does well to stay with it.
I agree. It would be a real shock if the Baggies get back into this match
Grimsby ties it up at the Shrimpers
Pass from Foden is ajar off Ajai for a Citeh corner
Oh - KDB fed Foden but he couldn't nutmeg Aje.
Volley from Cancelo well wide off the corner from KDB
Connor Gallagher fouls Jesus just outside the Baggies box.
Connor Gallagher picks up the first card of the match. And Citeh have yet another free kick out. They're mounting up.
Gallagher booked for that
Free kick from KDB harmlessly out of play
Cancelo called for a foul on Diangana
Bloody hell! WBA have equalized! What on earth!
GOAL ! CITEH AJAR AS JAI SCOPRES TO TIE IT UP
What a crazy season this is turning out to be.
Free kick headed out then headed back in then out then Ajai got the ball turned and it took a wicked deflection off of Ruben Dias.
Well then, it's certainly back to Plan A for WBA now. How will Citeh respond?
Sorry, Bob. The good thing is that the Baggies concede most of their goals in the second half and surely Citeh will tire them out
Into stoppage time
A minute of that
Citeh surprisingly being held 1-1 at the half by the Baggies
Half time then - 1-1. Who would have seen this coming. Only WBA's tenth goal of the season but it's come away to Citeh. Crazy!
Late drama at Bloomfield Road. The Tigers made it Desmond late on then the Tangerines made it 3-2 a minute later and that's how it finished
The second half is underway from the Etihad
Back on for the second half now. Come on, Citeh - time to pull your fingers out!
Rochdale thrashed rock bottom Wigan 0-5
Sterling tries to set up an identical goal to the one in the first half. Doesn't quite work out this time.
Newport ties it up late at Salford as it finished 1-1. Newport two points ahead at the top while Salford moved down to ninth place
Scunny defeated Barrow 2-1 thanks to a late winner. Newly promoted Barrow above the drop zone ahead of Stevenage on goal difference
Cambridge has taken the lead vs Colchester in an East Anglian Derby. Cambridge up to sixth with Colchester down to seventh
In the Scottish League Cup Quarters Alloa has a surprise 1-0 lead vs Hibs early in the second half
Sam Johnstone turns around a cross from Cancelo.
Cambridge two up vs Colchester
