Friday Night Thriller!
As luck would have it, I'm celebrating the end of the semester by watching my beloved Leeds United in their clash against West Ham this afternoon. Predictably, it's been an up and down season for us in terms of results, with four wins and five losses, along with useful draws against Premier League powerhouses Arsenal and Citeh, in our eleven matches. But all of that seems somewhat irrelevant. I love watching the Bielsa side; every match is unpredictably thrilling. Based on my patented rubric, this home match against a bottom half side should be a win; however, given that we're eight points ahead of that mark and that David Moyes' side have been in decent form, I'd take a draw and a point tonight. Come on, you Whites! #MOT!

Afternoon, gents - Scott Murray in the Guardian has summed up our season rather well: "There’s no point trying to second-guess Leeds United. Going toe-to-toe with Manchester City and Arsenal. Admirable defeats against Liverpool and Chelsea. A second-half performance against Aston Villa that was as good as anything we’ve seen in this Premier League season so far. Consecutive 4-1 spankings against Leicester and Palace. They could win or lose this game by five tonight, or anything in between."
The team news out of Elland Road tonight:
Leeds United: Meslier, Dallas, Ayling, Cooper, Alioski, Phillips, Raphinha, Rodrigo, Klich, Harrison, Bamford.
Subs: Poveda-Ocampo, Roberts, Casilla, Helder Costa, Hernandez, Struijk, Shackleton.
West Ham United: Fabianski, Balbuena, Ogbonna, Cresswell, Coufal, Soucek, Rice, Fornals, Bowen, Benrahma, Haller.
Subs: Lanzini, Snodgrass, Dawson, Noble, Fredericks, Johnson, Randolph.
Referee: Michael Oliver (Northumberland).
I've been watching highlights of our 5-1 win over West Ham in 1999. I'd take that again.
Hiya Bob
Best of luck today!! I will be here watching the first half but will have to listen to the match on 5Live for the second half
I have kept your keeper in my fantasy team and left out De Gea..... better do me proud!
I want some goals today!
Afternoon, Dave - great to have you on board for the first half. How's your week been?
More to the point, how's Kathy? Any update on the COVID at her office?
Jim Proudfoot and Jim Beglin on the mics this afternoon. We're ready to go!
I am well
Everything here is fine. Our results came back negative and the woman in her office was also negative
She went back to work on Wednesday and Today alone
Thanks for asking
We are off
PENALTY!!!!
GREAT START!!!
Definitely on!
STONEWALL!!!!!
Yes! Patrick wins a penalty in the third minute!
I never think it should be a red for a penalty...it didn't stop a goal scoring opportunity... that was a pen is!
Up comes Klich.... BLOODY HELL!
RUBBISH PEN
Atrocious pen
Bugger! Matty Klich steps up and hits a soft one to Flappy!
Grrrr!
Is he off is line....YESS!
Leeds get another chance!!!!
Yes! VAR has ordered a retake!
Klich to take again!
Flappy has no argument... better stop or he's off
We've played hardly any football and it is passed 5 minutes
GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes! No mistake at the second attempt. Matty is ice cold and clinical.
1-0 Whites!
What let off by Leeds!!
Now let's build on that one.
Good Afternoon Bob Dave. Leeds won the penalty as I was walking in the house. Glad Leeds is leading but VAR took bloody forever
Were the Hammers hard done by? Was Flappy really more than millimeters off the line? Any sympathy for Johnno?
Leeds up to tenth tied with West Ham and Everton... by quite a few goals
I've seen more VAR than footie since walking in the house
None for Johnno
Hi David
No different than the offside calls
We were exposed there at the back with players exposed forward but Coop recovered.
Jarred Bowen drives to win a corner off of Mini Cooper off a pass from Fornals. Ali fouled off the Hammers corner
I'm concerned about set pieces tonight as the Hammers are a big side, but that one was cleared out.
Wildly open match so far - totally thrilling.
Two free headers for the Hammers, the last by Haller straight to Meslier. Actually came off Phillips's foot
Hiya, David - I didn't see you come on with this wild start to the match. Hope the week has gone well for you.
West Ham shouldn't be ahead!!
What is he on about
Claret and sky blue clashes with white? It didn't back in the day
Another Hammers attack with Haller behind it. We're living dangerously here.
Hammers with a chance... weak effort
Haller with a shot off Ayling and right to Meslier
End to end stuff - fantastic!
Cheers, Bob. It's been a decent week. Bet you're glad to be on vacation
Jim Beglin is getting right up my nose here with his comments.
Bob will be pleased that Haller's howlers were that instead of goals
Don't let Beglin begin to rain on your parade
Just wide by Rodrigo off a pass from Ali
Oh - Rodrigo had a decent chance there from Gjanni's cross. Should have done better.
Oh - Raphinha had the pace there but I don't like that he has to use his left foot for everything. He could have slid in there with the right peg.
I so wish the REAL United would play like this United!
Such a bad feeling about tomorrow!! Don't know if I can bear to watch
I don't like that Bowen was allowed to run and shoot there but fortunately he blasted well over.
Shot from Jarred Bowen from 25 yards out makes it halfway to Burnley
You lot will have a chance against us Sunday week. Should be a thriller!
Don't know if I will be able to watch live. Might need to watch on Talksport.
I mean listen
We host the Evil Blades on my birthday. I'm confident of a Happy Birthday. Our Uniteds meet the day before Jacquelyn's birthday
I'll trust that you'll put them to the sword!
Coufal has won an Ayling corner for the Hammers
Bugger! Another goal conceded from a set piece. I was worried about that.
1-1 Grrr!
BUGGER! SOUCEK TIES IT UP WITH A HEADER FROM THE CORNER
Bugger... the equalizer
Leeds are as bad as Man United at set pieces
Poor all around. A free header and unusually poor from Meslier. Should have easily saved it
My keeper concedes!
Sorry, Bob, but I'm confident Leeds will regain the lead
Agreed - a bit flappy from Meslier. Should have done better.
With keeping like that his name will change to Messylier
Cheers, David!
I bet Bob said that Said let Leeds off the hook with that poor pass on the counter
Oh - Rodrigo was in there from Raphinha's ball. Put it into Flappy's arms unfortunately. Good chance.
Rafinha did well to find Rodrigo who turned and shot straight at Flappy
Jack Harrison has been a bit out of sorts in the last few matches.
I think Jack Harrison is still in the learning mode , but one for the future
Oh - Benrahma has been given a bit too much room again and he tried a pop. Not too far off.
They Said that the long range Hammers shot landed in the side netting
That goal against Leeds really hurt me... I have FOUR Leeds players!!!
Balbuena heads out a Kliched cross for a Leeds corner
Oh - good ball over from Raphinha there and Bamford just couldn't get to it. Corner.
Bloody short corner by Leeds!
Rafinha failed to control the long ball from Dallas
Gjanni picks up a yellow for a late one on Bowen.
Ali booked for a foul on Jarred Bowen
So stupid... had a chance to put in a dangerous into the box....no....let's pass it back to the center circle!
Hopefully mistakes don't count against you in the standings
I hate all the comments about pushing forward....they only know that way! They make it sound like a bad thing!!!
I love it!!
My side used to do it!
Leeds only four points from the last five matches but they have had a really difficult schedule which fails to get mentioned
Nice free kick position for us now. Let's take advantage of it!
I do too. It's as if some sort of rule has been broken or as if they're cheating
I think these two are being very anti-Leeds!!
They are saying about Bamford with missing too many chances. I agree with them. I thought that last season but at least he has the chances!
Header flapped away off the free kick, but a foul called anyway
True, David - seven of our eleven matches so far have been against top half sides. On my rubric, we should only be at six points.
The Manc Derby the only televised match tomorrow, but since it's on NBC I can't watch it
BLOODY USELESS OF NBC
Good Leeds is above that or they would be in the drop zone. Also, the rubric will change as the season progresses
Cheers, Dave.
Oh - great cross over there from Jack but Patrick couldn't get enough power in the header.
Decent header from Bamford....I like seeing the cross go in... could have done it few second before
Oh how I miss great wing play!
The big match is on Wednesday, which is Pool vs the Spurs
Should have been a penalty there.
Leeds want a pen!
Bamford could have pipped in front of the defender
No pen given....didn't he almost catch the ball
I don't know the rules
No bucket for Bielsa?
We're really piling it on at the end of this half. Should be rewarded with another goal.
Bamford does work hard up top
I'm guessing there will be about five minutes of stoppage time.
Late corner for us now - let's make this count!
A Leeds pass is Kliched off of Ogbonna for a corner . A pair of stoppage time minutes
Only TWO minutes!!! It was ages for the pen stuff!!
TOO INCONSISTENT!
Something has to be done about the clock!
Ayling has a go from distance. Nice effort.
Corner from Raphina punched away by Flappy then long range shot from Ayling straight to Flappy
I was as surprised as you to see just two minutes
It's 1-1 at the half as the ref blows for half time thirteen seconds early
Half time
That's it for me boys
Off to pick up Kathy
I'll be listening on 5Live
Fingers crossed!
Half-time - I'm reasonably happy with that performance so far. We were on top for long stretches of that half. But I'm not happy that we conceded a sloppy one from a corner.
Something to work on. 1-1.
Two changes from Marcelo at half time. Jack Harrison and Gjanni Alioski off and Helder Costa and Jamie Shackleton on. Interesting. He clearly didn't like what he saw on the left side.
Very misty night in Yorkshire tonight.
Another bright start from us - keep it up!
Oh - come on, Patrick - hit the target!
Back for the second half as I was doing diaper duty. I saw Shackleton and Helder Costa coming on as subs
Cheers, Dave. Look forward to chatting with you tomorrow
The mist increasing in West Yorkshire. Is it fog from the Pennines?
Great tackle by Costa on Rice on a Hammers break but the Hammers still have possession
Oh - great saving block from Luke Ayling. Haller was really threatening.
Now mark 'em up!
Great block by Ayling from Haller off a pass from Jarred Bowen . Hammers corner
Oh - Meslier has to tip over from Haller again.
Melsier does well to tip over a header from Haller as Ogbonna headed on the corner
Worrying period of possession for the Hammers here.
Meslier punches away the corner from Jarred Bowen
Good ball over from Helder but no one was diving in at the near post.
Our old pal Snoddy warming up for the Hammers now.
Snoddy warming up for the Hammers. I don't think Bob is welcoming him back to ER
West Ham dropping deeper now to bottle up the match.
Luke earns up a cheap one. Will Raphinha swing this one in. No short.
That was a howler of a challenge and really Ayling as Leeds won a free kick
Both teams are dangerous on the counter
Bielsa has a better winning percentage than Don Revie? WOW!
Benrahma is allowed to turn and shoot again. He's dangerous as we saw at Brentford. Need to shut him down.
Rodrigo gives away a dangerous free kick now for the Hammers. Mark 'em up!
Stupid foul by Rodrigo on Soucek just outside the Leeds box. Not the best clearance from Meslier
Benrahma shot in the end and it wasn't far away!
That free kick Said over, not goal.
Cross from Raphina headed well wide by Bamford
Our intensity level has dropped off markedly now, just as it did at the Bridge last week. Maybe another change in hand.
Hammers last won vs Leeds in 2000 with Nigel Winterburn scoring. It's been a long time since he's played
Oh - another close call from Benrahma.
free kick from Cresswell headed out then just wide by Benhrama
Oh - Kal forced Flappy into a save there. Corner.
OH! Flappy turns around a shot from Kal Phillips after a cross was headed out by Ogbonna
Oh - nice effort from Klich there. But Flappy held it well.
Corner headed out then a long range shot kliched to his fellow Pole, Flappy
Thank you for the card. Great picture of you and Kate
Nice - I'm glad that it got to you so quickly. It's our pleasure.
Poor clearance by Melsier off a poor back pass from Shackleton, but tackled by Haller for a Leeds throw
End to end stuff again - the match has come to life in the past five minutes. Could swing either way.
The final roll of the dice from Bielsa as Tyler Roberts is on for Bamford
Tyler Roberts is on for Patrick now for the last fifteen minutes.
Oh - that was just a whisker away for Fournals.
PHEW! Horrible misjudgement by Mini Cooper off a nice slide rule pass and millimeters wide by Fornals with just Meslier to beat
Stu Dallas called for grabbing Benhrama
Oh - great save from Meslier there.
OH! Superb save by Melsier off a close range header from Balbuena off a great free kick from Coufal
Helder gives up an unnecessary free kick and this is dangerous again.
Helder Costa concedes yet another free kick for the Hammers
BUGGER! OGBONNA HEADS IN THE FREE KICK FROM AARON CRESSWELL
Bloody hell! Ogbonna beats his man and nods home.
Hammers 1-2 up. Grrr!
Sorry, Bob. It's Leeds time and Desmond is about to enter ER
Another free kick for the Hammers
Thanks, David!
Moyes throwing on the old warhorse Mark Noble.
Mark Noble for Benhrama
Another change from Davie Moyes as young Ben Johnson is on for Jarred Bowen
Five minutes left to salvage a point here.
Oh - acrobatic effort from Haller but Meslier did well to palm it away.
OH! Superb save by Melsier off the bicycle kick from Haller off a great cross
Oh - off the post now for the Hammers.
OH! Cross from Ogbonna headed by Balbuena off the post
Tyler wins a corner now. Let's make it count.
Tyler Roberts wins a corner off of Coyfal of a nice long ball. Coufal heads away the corner from Raphina
Of course, Moyes is going to throw on Snoddy just to rub in the injury here.
Oh - that was the chance. Rodrigo needed to score there.
Into stoppage time. A Barber Shop Quartet of those minutes as Rodrigo heads a cross straight to Flappy
Tyler wins us a free kick and we can bring the big boys up now. Come on!
Tyler Roberts wins a free kick off of Mark Noble who is booked for that
Free kick Kliched off of Soucek for a late corner from Raphinha headed away
A stoppage time substitution to ruin Dave's day and the final roll of the dice from Moyesey as Bob's old mate , Snoddy , on for Fornals
It's over and the Hammers won 1-2 at ER. Sorry, Bob, but great chatting with you
That's it - it's a bad loss for us tonight, perhaps our first bad loss of the season. We need to be beating sides like West Ham at home and, instead, they've done us over.
It leaves us on 14 points from 12 matches, with 26 points still to win. We're stuck in 15th.
