The Manc Derby (and some other matches)....
A very good Saturday morning, chaps. I'm up early out of habit more than desire to watch Wolves v. Villa on Peaccok with my cuppa. But everyone knows that today is all about the Manchester Derby - the big one. Even though neither side is in the top four, it's still the biggest game of the season. The other matches today whether on NBC Sports, NBC or Peacock are merely the undercard matches. Join me, wont' you?
439 Comments:
Wolves come into this one in 10th on 17 points, while Villa come into this one in 12th on 15 points, only a point better than Leeds. So, of course, I'm hoping for a Wolves win in this Brummie Derby.
The teams out on the pitch now:
Wolverhampton Wanderers: Patricio, Saiss, Coady, Marcal, Semedo, Moutinho, Dendoncker, Podence, Traore, Silva, Neto.
Subs: Ruddy, Ait-Nouri, Neves, Boly, Vitinha, Kilman, Otasowie.
Aston Villa: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett, Luiz, McGinn, Ramsey, Traore, Watkins, Grealish.
Subs: Steer, Hourihane, Nakamba, El Ghazi, Guilbert, Elmohamady, Hause.
Nice banner erected at Molineux for Raul Jimenez who is out indefinitely with that fractured skull. New boy Fabio Silva is his replacement and the great hope for Wolves.
I don't know - maybe even a draw is the best result in this derby match for us. That would mean Wolves only on 18 and Villa only on 16 at the end of it. Sounds tasty.
I'll admit, I'll mainly be watching in order to hope that the teams around Leeds lose, especially those in the bottom five.
Wolves with a fast start, with Podense trying to find his new strike partner Silva on the end of a delicious cross. Nodded out for a corner.
Villa started like a house on fire but have since reverted to type. They do have two matches in hand, including this one, but it's hard to see them jumping back up into the top four again any time soon.
Hey Bob
I will be around for the derby only
I will be doing a lot of running around today but listening to everything on 5Live
Ollie Watkins' form has summed up Villa's problems. There were high hopes for the man who was signed from Brentford in the summer, especially after his hat-trick against the champions, but he hasn't scored since.
Morning, Dave - what's on the agenda today?
Villa keeper Martinez is down with a suspected head injury as Podense challenged for the cross from Neto.
Wolves are getting into some great positions but when the crosses come in there isn't a target man in the absence of Raul. He's a big loss for them.
Dendoncker trod on Grealish's ankle there. Painful but he should be able to continue.
Podense wins a free kick now in a dangerous area.
Joao Moutinho over this one....
Training pitch routine doesn't come off.
Still no attempts on target in the first half hour. This is the reason that people love watching Leeds. You know you're going to get some action, even if we lose.
Yes, I quite like the look of the table with a 0-0 draw. Both sides would still be in mid-table.
The next one up is a tough one for me to pick - Newcastle v. WBA. Newcastle are also on 14 points albeit with better goal difference. WBA are meanwhile in 19th with only six points. I suppose a draw is the best result.
Half time whistle goes - not much for the punters, if there were some at Molineux today. A bit rubbish actually, but I'm pleased with a 0-0 scoreline. Suits me to a tee.
Back for the second half of this dour Midlands derby.
Good morning, Bob. Here to join . Had a late lie in and doesn't look like I missed much
Swans one up at Cardiff in the South Wales Derby and now up to second place
Best chance of the second half. Jack Grealish laid back a pass for Doug Luis, who shot just wide from the D
Grealish just manages to win a corner off of Semedo
Horrible corner from Bert Traore just fails to leave the ground and is cleared as is the return cross
OH! Powerful long range shot from Neto just wide off a long run
Will Villa Cash in from a free kick off a foul from Marcal
OH! Curling free kick from Grealish clips the top of the net from a very narrow angle
Near post shot from Olly Watkins turned around by Rui Patricio. Villa's first shot on target
Oh - new boy Fabio Silva hits the post!
Morning, David - how are you mate? Welcome to this goalless affair.
Oh! Off the post from young Fabio Silva off a pass from compatriot, Danny Podence
A Wolves cross skims off of Mings's had and a pre Saiss header is comfortably saved by Martinez
Bert Traore goes down in the box trying to win a Villa penalty . It looked soft , but the Dean of officials signals offside so it's a moot point
Long range shot from Semedo forces a routine save from Martinez
Nothing to that penalty claim. This is looking more and more like a 0-0er. I'm fine with that.
Connor Coady called for a rugby hold on Olly Watkins. El Gazi on for Bert Traore
Semedo heads out a Villa free kick Targetted into the box
Welcome back Bob. How has your morning, been?
Swans two up at Cardiff in the South Wales Derby
Oh - great save by Martinez from Dendoncker.
OH! Great save by Martinez off a volley from Dendoncker off a cross from Neto
And that's Dendoncker off - he gets the hook for Neves.
That was Dendoncker's last touch of the match as he's replaced by Ruben Neves
Wolves are piling on the pressure now, looking for the winner. I'm hoping that Villa can hold out. A draw would be a lovely result for Leeds.
Adama Traore goes on a solo run nd a Villa booking as he was Targetted
Free kick taken short then the cross from Dasnny Podence headed on and young Fabio Silva with a bicycle kick straight to Martinez
Moutinho booked for a foul on Jack Grealish . Ezri Konsa talked himself into the Dean's little book earlier
Douglas Luiz is off - Villa down to ten men!
Now then - Wolves have six minutes or so to force their advantage. Traore tries to claim a drag back from Grealish. Nothing doing.
Doug Luiz Sent off for a second yellow for a barge on Danny Podence. It seemed harsh, but looking at the replay looked the right call
Villa will be down a player the remaining few minutes
Jack Grealish booked for a rash challenge on Danny Podence
Nasty one from Jack Grealish there and Mike Dean has his cards out again. Yellow.
Mike Dean recorded his 3,000th yellow card earlier in this match. He's working on 4,000 in this second half.
That's Villa's seventh booking of the match. There will be a club fine
They'll take if they can eke out a late winner here.
Semedo heads out a cross from young Ramsey for a Villa corner
Villa corner headed out in to a quintet of stoppage time minutes
Argy bargy between Neto and Ezri Konsa
Nothing doing
Bloody hell - Villa have a late, late penalty. Mike Dean makes the headlines again.
PENALTY AS MCGINN GOT A PASS FROM JACK GREALISH, NUIT MEGGED SEMEDO AND WAS TRIPPED. THAT LOOKED A STONEWALL PENALTY FOR THE TEN MEN LATE ON
Anwar El Ghazi to take this one....
Scores! Villa win the Midlands Derby!
GOAL !!!! TNE MAN VILLA SCORE FROM THE SPOIT ASD EL GAZI SCORES A ROCKET SENDING RUI PATRICIO THE WRONG WAY
Now it's Moutinho who's off! Mike Dean - what a hero!
Villa up to eighth
Moutinho sent off for a second yellow late on
Dean Smith aiming to ruin Dave's day as young Jacob Ramsey is replaced by Marvelous Nkamba deep in stoppage time. Dave will think that's anything but Marvelous
Villa win 0-1 at Molineaux while they were a man down.
Swans win 0-2 at Cardiff in South Wales and move up to second place
Next is the Toon vs the Baggies
For once the Baggies are favorites as the Toon have been decimated by COVID and had their match cancelled last week. They didn't resume training until a few days ago
GOAL!!! SO MUCH FOR THYAT AS ALMIRON GIVES THE TOON THE LEAD TWENTY SECONDS IN
That was pure class and horrible defending from Ivanovic as he misjudged a long ball. Cally Wilson passed to Joe Linton and his world class through ball found Almiron who scored with a great finish
Bob should be pleased with that early Toon goal keeping the Baggies firmly in the drop zone
A surprise in the Championship as Rotherham have taken the lead vs Bristol City. Believe it or not that's not idle gossip
In A South Yorkshire Derby , Not a Big Club takes the lead vs Barnsley and Not A Big Club off the foot of the table ahead of Wycombe on goal difference
Cherries take the lead vs the Terriers and are now a point behind the Canaries
Cherries two up vs the Terriers
A cold rainy day on Tyneside which is not exactly the surprise of the millenium.
I suppose if there has to be a winner in this one, I'd prefer Newcastle, our opponents on Wednesday. But I'd prefer a draw.
I'm off to the shower. I should be in and out of this one but looking forward to the big one.
Almiron through on goal, but the angle was a bit narrow and he shot tamely at Sam Johnstone
The Teesiders two up vs the slumping Evil Lions
Barnsley ties it up at Hillsborough ,putting Not a Big Club back on bottom where they belong
The Bees take the lead at Forest and move up to fourth place. Forest and are out of the drop zone above their East Midlands rivals, the Rams , on goal difference

Posh leads Rochdale 3-1 . Posh up to third place. Rochdale above the sdrop zone on goals scored
Black Cats two up at second place Abe Lincoln. Black Cats a point outside a drop spot .
A real shocker as the Shrews take the lead at the Tigers. The Tigers still top. Shrews off the foot of the table ahead of Wigan on goals scored
Teesiders three up vs the Evil Lions. Luton on top vs PNE
Cherries three up vs the Terriers while table topping Canaries take the lead at Ewood Park
Joe Linton turns Ivanovic then his shot is turned around by Johnstone

Pompey takes the lead at PR. Pompey third a point behind second place Abe Lincoln. Tractor Boys down to fifth
Rock bottom WIgan three up vs Accrington Stanley
Bottom three in L1 winning as Richard Burton is on top at the Fake Dons
Bob will be pleased that Not a Big Club is back on bottom as Barnsley lead 1-2 at Hillsborough
Charlton takes the lead vs the Real Dons. Charlton up to fifth and Tractor Boys down to sixth
Baggies nearly tie it up. Two poor defensive headers off a cross then just wide by Connor Gallagher
Rotherham two up vs Bristol City. Rotherham, three points above the drop zone. Bristol City out of the playoff spots. That's not idle gossip
A minute of stoppage time at SJP
The Real Dons have come from behind to take a surprise 1-2 lead at Charlton
Toon one up at the half thanks to the earliest goal of the season scored twenty seconds into the match
I'm back at half time and see that the Toon are still 1-0 up through that early Almiron strike. That suits me.
I'm also very happy to see Not a Big Club on the bottom.
The second half is underway from SJP
Welcome back, Bob
Double substitution from Slaven. Both strikers off as Cally Robinson and Karlan Grant off and replaced by Charlie Austin and Kieran Gibbs. Matty Phillips will move up as striker and Gibbs will play wide left where Phillips was.
Coventry went two up at Wycombe on the stroke of halftime
GOAL !!! BAGGIES TIE IT UP WITH A SPECACULAR VOLLEY FROM DARNELL FURLONG OFF A GREAT CROSS FROM MATTY PHILLIPS , WHO WENT PAST JAMAAL LEWIS TOO EASILY
Back on for the second half now just in time to see WBA equalize! Furlong with a stonking effort!
1-1!
Blow up, ref - I'm happy with this result right now.
Toon with a free kick in a great position
You definitely want a Toon win. Toon well safe in midtable.

Disregard the last comment. Bees still one up at Forest
Hey Boys,
I am back from all my errands... food shopping... oil for snowblower(grrrr) and other stuff
I was old school today... listening to 5Live!
Reminded me of listening to Radio 2 in my living room every Saturday afternoon and listening to BBC World Service in college and pre-tv days
Forest Green takes the lead vs Cambridge, who are down to eighth . Green up to fourth just barely behind Carlisle on goal difference
Norwich retake the lead at Ewood
Good morning, Dave. Glad you are now in the warm indoors
TWO terrible passes by Shelvey!!
Definitely don't want a Baggie win here
The Orient Express ties it up vs Newport, whose lead at the top is now four points
Welcome back, Dave!
Agreed. A Toon win is the best result for Leeds
Cambridge two down
Absolutely - a Newcastle win if need be, but a draw is probably the best result for us. I'd love to keep Newcastle in the bottom half.
As I said, I do love listening to everything... with all the updates as well
Baggies third from bottom behind the Cottagers on goal difference
Sides for the derby should be announced any minute
Bournemouth 4 up vs Cruddersfield
No. You need a Toon win. The Toon won't be in a relegation battle this season
I think it is better for a Toon win... I agreed with our Texas Boy
Canaries three points clear at the top
Exactly - the Baggies would leapfrog Burnley into 18th but they'd still be in the relegation zone.
Luton three up vs PNE.
Cheers, Dave
I am so upset with NBC..... NO PREGAME WHATSOEVER for the Manchester derby!!
A draw leaves Leeds seven points clear instead of eight. Every point counts
I want a few sides underneath us in the bottom half so that there's a buffer between us and the likes of WBA, not just a point spread. If that's not going to be the likes of Soton, West Ham or Palace, who is that going to be? I'll take Newcastle.
Cherry on Top..... FIVE that is!
That is true.
I will probably be old school for the Manc Derby, listening on Talksport Five
Teams are out
De Gea, Obi Wan, Lindeoff, Maguire, Shaw
Fred, Pogba, McTom, Bruno, Rash, Greenwood
That's a good point but points come first then position. For a buffer you would look at the likes of the Seagulls and Cottagers. I'm still predicting that 35 points will be enough for safety this season. Leeds almost halfway there
The other guys
Ederson, Walker, Dias, Stones, Cancelo, Rodri, Ferdi, KDB, Mahrez, Sterling, Jesus
Aguero not even on bench
I think you're probably right. We'll have some relatively easy games to come where we should be able to pick up some valuable points.
BUGGER! Same tactics as in the midweek loss at Leipzig. Why go with what doesn't work? Why start Pogba?
Pogba in the side - wow!
Why aren't you going to be watching, David?
The Terriers sure aren't at the races today
Pogba should just bugger off
Too defensive again from OGS... really annoying me
Back SEVEN!
We lost NBC on December 2nd and Universo is not on our package. When I log into NBC Sports it says I'm not authorized
Apparently his agent said this week that he wants out in January. That would be great!
That just SUCKS!!
Can't you get just over the air stuff
Black Cats up by a Barber Shop Quartet at second place Abe Lincoln.
Looking forward to that classic War of the Roses match-up Sunday week. Should be rather tasty.
Is there a link for the match? I'm not sure of one
I know he did... the day before the CL match.... He didn't distance himself from the comments at all!!
Disgusting
I'll take this swap.... Pogba buggers back off to Juve for a certain CR7
That's the day before Jacquelyn's birthday. Hope she brings the two Dave's good luck
Doubt that Bob..... the Lancashire Lot are boring!
Wigan were three up vs Acccrington Stanley . Now 3-2
Carlisle four up vs Stevenage
Exeter five up vs Tranny
The Toon retake the lead.... I heard over a minute before I saw it!!
I HATE THIS CRAP!!!
Great cross and great header from Gayle
GOAL !! CRYSTAL GAYLE GIVES THE TOON A 2-1 LEAD. SHELVEY PLAYED IT WIDE RIGHT TO ONE OF THE MURPHY TWINS AND HIS CROSS WAS MET WITH A SUPERB HEADER THAT'S MUSIC TO BOB'S EARS
GOAL! Dwight Gayle scores against his old club! Great header!
I'll take it for sure.
If the Toon holds on to win that will for a celebration from Bob by listening to marathon of music from Crystal Gayle along with Kate. She may not be pleased
Peroxide Austin was down , getting a whack in the head, but seems to be okay
Brentford two up at Forest
Southend takes the lead vs Scunny but still bottom of the Football League. Crawley have come from behind to lead Barrow 3-2 , who are above the drop zone on goal difference
Forest two goals away from going into the drop zone
Brum 0 Watford 0 but the Hornets have a pen.... and Deeney scores
I picked Forest to go up
I thought they would recover from their disastrous last game of the season that had them drop out of the playoffs
I was 100% wrong.....it has killed them for this season
The Terriers sure haven't been at the races today. Even we could catch them
Brentford have a 3rd.... Forest getting closer
Hornets up to fourth , a point outside the automatic spots. I pickled the Hornets to go up automatically
6 added minutes at SJP.... so random!!
There were two added yesterday after all the penalty VAR stuff yesterday at ER!
SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE!
Only out of the drop zone on goals scored. Goals count
