Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Thursday Afternoon Birthday Footie

We have a  Premier League double header and just like a rock concert , we start with the opening act which is a lackluster claret and sky blue derby with Villa hosting Burnley. It concludes with United at Bramall Lane. United need to put the Evil Blades to the sword as they have only one point from a dozen matches. United need to make sure that the Evil Blades have a point from a baker's dozen matches while being defeated by a cricket score, which would serve them right

Afternoon, birthday boy! It's great to join you for an afternoon of the good stuff, including what promises to be a birthday stuffing by United of the evil Blades.

Blogger manunitedrules said...

Good afternoon, Bob. Thanks for being part of the birthday celebrations. Definitely looking forward to stuffing the Evil Blades, which is no more than they deserve

Teams out on the pitch now - of course I'm hoping for a big Villa win over Burnley this afternoon.

1:00 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

And we're away at Villa Park.

1:01 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Even after this one, Burnley have one match in hand against United and Villa have two! Not sure how that happened.

1:02 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

They're off from Villa Park .
COME ON VILLA

1:02 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

United vs Burnley and Citeh vs Villa were postponed on opening day due to the Manc clubs extended run in Europe Toon vs Villa postponed a couple of weeks ago due to a COVID outbreak in the Toon squad

1:04 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Looking at the league table, you'd have to say that Sheffield Utd are virtually down already. Add to that any of the clubs who are currently on single figures - WBA, Burnley and Fulham. I'd also add Brighton who are on 11 points. So basically two teams from those four. I don't see Arsenal, Newcastle or us as realistic relegation strugglers.

1:04 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Talking about the Toon , con gratulation on thrashing them yesterday. Music to your eyes to the sound of winning Toon

1:05 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Thanks for that explanation, mate. That makes perfect sense.

1:05 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I would agree with that. The Baggies may climb the table if Fat Sam weaves his magic. The Cottagers are improving , so the Seagulls are definitely in the mix

1:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Cheers, Bob. Glad to help

1:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Hope these are good matches because it's a lovely day for outdoor activities today. Spectacular weather here today

1:07 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Thanks - it was a real confidence-booster for us. I was worried when their first goal went in that our heads would drop, but we just kept at it. I loved that, after Stu Dallas scored our third, that Bielsa immediately brought on Pablo and Tyler Roberts instead of tossing on the likes of Jamie Shackleton or Pascal Struijk to bolt the door. He was rewarded with two more goals, including a stonking drive from Jack Harrison. It means I can breathe easy about Sunday when we play at OT. We don't really need anything that day now.

1:08 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I will definitely will have to watch that Peacock. I watched the highlights from the showdown at Anfield. I wonder why Jose had words for Klopp yesterday. If it was the late winner I thought it was a perfectly valid goal

1:13 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - that should have been Villa's first.

1:22 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Martinez with a great save from Chris Wood!

1:22 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Super save by Martinez from a close range header by Chris Wood

1:22 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Villa should have scored, but for a poor cut back by Bernie Traore. Nice recovery by Charlie Taylor

1:23 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Decent long range shot from El Gazi just over off a pass from Marvelous Nakamba

1:24 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Shot from Jack Grealish blocked for a corner, but nearly prevented by Charlie Taylor

1:27 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Near post shot from Bernie Traore saved easily by Nick Pope off a short corner

1:27 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Off the line . Thought Villa had taken the lead . Shot from Grealish deflected off a Burnley player then Olly Watkins, but well cleared off the line by former Villa defender, Matty Lowton

1:32 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Half an hour gone - I was hoping that Villa might be a goal or two up at this point. Come on!

1:32 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Robbie Brady booked for a foul on Marvelous Nakamba that was anything but Marvelous

1:32 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

VAR check for a red card for Robbie Brady now. Nothing doing.

1:33 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

VAR checking for a red card. Common sense prevails as it stays a yellow

1:33 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Grealish ghosted in there at the near post but his volley just didn't come off.

1:34 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Cross from El Mohammedy volleyed wide by Jack Grealish

1:34 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Ir'a telling that I cannot remember a save from Leno this season now that Emi is a Villian. The Ice Kid hasn't represented a real competition for Leno's place.

Afternoon chaps!

1:35 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The announcer said Grealish made headlines off the field for the wrong reasons. I hadn't heard about that

1:35 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Good afternoon, Steve. How are you? Looks like a decent result vs the Saints yesterday

1:36 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ben Mee trips Jack Grealish, who was on a solo run

1:36 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Drink driving ban for naughty-Jack. Fortunately he didn't hurt anyone.

1:36 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! The free kick from El Gazi is finger tipped on to the bar by Nick Pope and out for a corner

1:38 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Happy birthday Al-Prez. In the circumstances, it was an OK result. I've lived through seasons where we can't keep 11 men on the pitch but it's not very nice, week-after-week.

1:38 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Thanks, Steve. Really poor by Grealish. Thankfully nobody was hurt

1:39 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Thanks, Steve. Hope results and discipline improve for the Gunners. Do you think Arteta is near the end of his tenure with the Gunners?

1:40 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Jack needs a manager to scare the life out of him like Ferg used to do.

1:40 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Dueling free kicks now - first Pope saves brilliantly from El Ghazi; now, Brady test Martinez.

1:41 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Free kick from Robbie Brady straight to Martinez

1:41 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Steve. I wonder if JT could scare Jack? He might be the disciplinarian for the Villains

1:42 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Afternoon, Steve - did you get any snow your way? We got a reasonable dusting here, which gave me a decent half hour of cardio this morning. But it sounds like Dave is in amongst it out east.

1:43 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Bernie Traore wins a corner off of Dwight McNeil

1:43 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm losing track of all of the Traores in the Premier League. Which one is this now playing for Villa? Are they all related or is it the Smith of West Africa?

1:44 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - off the post for Villa - bugger!

1:44 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Corner from Traore headed on by El Mohamedy then headed off the post by Courtney Hause then headed out for another corner

1:44 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Grealish with an ambitious volley from twenty yards out. Might have gone off an arm.

1:45 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Volley from Jack Grealish double blocked off a corner from El Gazi

1:45 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

One minute of stoppage time now.

1:45 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Free kick for Villa. Might look for the head of Mings or Hause. Free kick from Traore headed out by the first man. A minute of stoppage time

1:46 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I would hate to see that. I don't think Auba slow start is due to anything that Arteta has done. I don't think that Partey's injuries are his fault. I don't think the concussion absences are his fault. I do think that if he continues to inexplicably play Xhaka, Willian, and Laca from the start, we won't prosper.

I think Willock, and AMN are ready to start every week ahead of Xhaka and Elneny.

It isn't a crisis despite the Spurs fanboy media saying it is.

1:46 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Route 1 stuff from Nick Pope there. And it comes back from Villa. One last free kick chance for the Villans.

1:46 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's been a decent half despite the score

1:46 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Traore and Diop are really common in Francophone Africa.

1:47 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

And cleared out for half-time. 0-0. Rather disappointed in that.

1:47 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Tark called for obstruction on Grealish. I thought he stood his ground. Free kick from Traore headed out and it's 0-0 at the half despite total dominance from Villa

1:48 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Right, chaps - I'm off to the last round of COVID pool testing on campus. I should be back for the United match. Cheerio for now.

1:48 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Just a dusting that I could sweep away with a broom. Still, just the threat got me off my ass to fill up the car, and find the snow shovels. There may be a bit more tomorrow and Saturday? Not, is preferable.

1:49 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

See you later Bob.

1:50 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Cheers Bob. Look forward to chatting wqith you during the second half

2:08 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Welcome Dave and thanks

2:08 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I was hoping that Villa would return for that half in a mood to put a stamp on the game. I'm bored with Burnley's continued existence.

2:08 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

DID OGS put out a positive lineup because it's my birthday, because it's the Blades , or both?

2:09 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Hiya Dave. That is an attacking lineup.

2:10 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Header from Olly Watkins comfortably saved by Martinez off a cross from El Mohammedy

2:10 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Also Dean Henderson in goal after spending two seasons at Bramall Lane

2:11 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Villa should have been at least three up at the half

2:12 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Burnley out of the drop zone a point ahead of the Cottagers and a point behind the Seagulls

2:14 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

El Ghazi? More like The Khazi with wasteful efforts like that.

2:14 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Long range curler from El Gazi is inches wide

2:14 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I had a feeling Henderson would start against his old team
I started Leeds' keeper instead of him this week in fantasy

2:16 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

LOL, Steve. Today has been one of his better matches

2:17 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Wonder how many points Mendy or Lloris would get in the fantasy league?

2:18 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Shot from El Gazi deflected over by ex Villa player, Matty Lowton

2:19 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

El Gazi reminds me of the Bon Jovi tune, "Livin' on a Prayer" because he's always half way there.

2:20 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Corner from Traore headed out by Ben Mee for another

2:20 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

BOOM BOOM Steve

2:20 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Chrissakes, Ashley Barnes is coming on now to add to my hate. Pull your finger out, Villians!

2:21 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Wonder how you all felt about the match at Anfield yesterday. I saw the highlights. Why did Little Joe have words for Klopp after the match or should I even ask?

2:21 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ashley Barnes on for J Rod in a like for like switch

2:22 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

El Gazi with another chance missed!!

2:23 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Long punt from Nick Pope reminds me of when we lived in England

2:23 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Allegedly, Litte Joe told Klopp that Liverpool had been second best despite the scoreline. Classic shithousery from him. I loved how Klopp gave him back and laughed at him.

2:23 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

He wasn't even halfway there that time

2:23 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Thanks, Steve. I only saw the highlights, but Little Joe watched a different match than Yours Truly. Definite poor Sportsmanship from Little Joe, but Steve spot on with the description

2:25 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Ashley Barnes isn't a patch on Jay-Jay. Ashley Barnes is an elbow swinging pseudo hard man that throws himself to the floor at the slightest touch. I don't miss Roy Keane many times, but just for 45 minutes, I would love to see Barnes face up to a real hard man and listen to his squeals.

2:26 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Horrendous free kick from former Villa player, Ashley Westwood off a mere one man wall.

2:26 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think Roy Keane and /or Paddy Viera would KO Ashley Barnes with little to no effort

2:27 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Lauren. Lauren is the old boy I'd set upon Ashley to teach him a succinct lesson.

2:28 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Shot from Ben Mee straight to Martinez off a poor clearance from a free kick from Ashley Westwood

2:29 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Are you referring to Larry White? At his peak , he would mark Ashley out of the game by pure skill alone.

2:30 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

El Gazy not even halfway there . He doesn't even have a prayer with shooting like that

2:32 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Into the side netting by Grealish off a pass from El Gazi

2:33 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Villa with no goals off 24 shots. Will that cost them?

2:34 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

You've forgotten Lauren? Our Cameroonian fullback? He was possibly the last proper scary hard man we had. Paddy backed down to Keane in the tunnel episode. Not a proper hard man. Lauren could kill you with his stare.

2:35 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Keenan David on for Bernie Traore

2:37 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I remember him. Ashley Barnes would definitely crap his nickers.

2:38 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Like for like as Matty Vydra is on for Chris Wood

2:39 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

He's the fainting goats of Premiership forwards.

2:39 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ben Mee fouls Keenan Davis just outside the box

2:40 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Horrible free kick from Grealish easily headed away by Charlie Taylor

2:41 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Now or never with Grealish's free-kick.

He's chosen never.

2:41 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Hiya again, boys - I'm back from the testing and quite arsed off that Villa haven't seen off this load of Sean Dyche troglodytes.

2:41 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ashley definitely a whiny cry baby

2:41 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Welcome back, Bob. Sadly , Villa look to have run out of ideas

2:42 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Welcome back to this brutal spectacle. How was the pool? Did you get to scandalize the campus in your Speedo?

2:43 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Olly Watkins fouls Robbie Brady , who went on a long solo run

2:44 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

LOL! I would love to see pictures of that

2:44 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ben Mee called for a foul on Grealish

2:45 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

OH NO YOU WOULDN'T

2:45 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

How many fouls does Ben Mee get before he gets an early bath?

2:45 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Mings should have won it there!

2:45 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - free header for Tyrone Mings - should have found the corner.

2:45 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Mings with a free header , but heads well wide off the free kick from Grealish

2:45 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Mings forgets he was attacking their goal and puts a dangerous ball out to safety.

2:46 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Well over by Grealish

2:46 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Now Grealish should have won it

2:47 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

LOL! It was our last COVID testing session of the season. I haven't been in the pool since February, sadly.

2:47 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

agreed, Bob. Mee has been getting away with quite a bit

2:47 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

What a waste. That's the Jack that drives me crazy.

2:47 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Useless modern day cross

2:47 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A pair of stoppage time minutes. Why so few minutes

2:48 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Everyone is raving about Ollie Watkins, but he's only scored 6, four of which were in that freak win against Liverpool.

2:48 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A stoppage time substitution to ruin Dave's day and a defensive one as Erik Pieters is on for Robbie Brady

2:48 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Watkins looks very average at this age.

2:49 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I am far from confident about United beating the Blades today... I hope I'm wrong... they need to start fast! Don't play yourself in...it's not cricket!!

If United do win by 4 goals, they would be fifth.
Five points behind Liverpool with a game in hand

2:49 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It finishes 0-0 at Villa Park

2:50 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

0-0. What a waste of time that was. Rescue me, Man United.

2:50 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

What a load of rubbish. 0-0. Burnley now out of the dropzone, a point better than Fulham on 10. Grrr!

2:50 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

All over at Villa Park and it ends scoreless
Burnley up to 17th... TEN points behind Leeds

Our Bob has nowt to worry about

2:50 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Villa did everything but score

2:51 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

United should beat the Blades. All but one team has so far. I think our United will win 0-2

2:52 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Aston Villa recorded 27 shots, the most by any side without scoring in a single Premier League match since Crystal Palace fired in 31 v Cardiff in December 2018.

I do need a clean sheet by Mags and a couple goals each by Rash and Greeny

That works for me - Sheffield United are real shite. One point and only five goals in 12 games. Honestly!

2:58 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

He's almost been charged by the FA for some "racist" tweet

2:59 PM

Who is Peter Drury trying to kid - Sheffield United are as good as down.

3:01 PM

3:01 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

United have won all of their 5 away games this season... after falling behind in each of them.... no need to keep the second streak going

3:02 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Peter Dreary said that the fans would make a difference at Bramall Lane. Surely they need more than that !

3:02 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

"So, Chris Wilder, your side has won no games at all. Not a sausage. Bugger all. Are you at all disappointed?"

"Not at all, as I always say, CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN..."

3:03 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Wo was charged. Dreary or Cavani?

3:03 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Armed with torches and pitchforks, possibly. Otherwise, no.

3:03 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Thinking about these two teams....they are the only two Uniteds that have to be called United.

Can't just be called Sheff or Man

All the other Uniteds don't need the United
Newcastle, Leeds, West Ham.... and so on

Can you think of any more

3:04 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I would think that Chris Wilder is more deserving of the sack than Bilic. Yes he took over when they were struggling in L1, but it's time for a change

3:04 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Bloody hell - early corner for the Blades.

3:04 PM

3:07 PM

3:07 PM

I personally was delighted that Bilic won the sack race. The sooner that he loses his work visa and pisses off to Zagreb never to be heard from again, the better.

3:08 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The lanky Blades forward has pulled up with a hammy. Poor conditioning there - only six minutes in.

3:08 PM

That's it for Sandy Burger who has pulled something. He's the one that picked Henderson's pocket for the goal

3:08 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

This United team.... just STUNS ME!!

No urgency when starting the match
No attacking belief at all

Right now, Blades have ten men....Do United go at them...no just sit back
