Another Nervy Saturday
Morning, chaps! I took advantage of the unusual schedule this morning to have a lovely lie-in. It's another nervy morning in the Premier League for your's truly, as a number of our relegation rivals play. We start at 10am with Chelsea v. Wolves on USA but more importantly Burnley v. Villa, which I'll be watching on The Cock. At 12:30, United visit the South Coast to take on Brighton. Finally, at 2:45, there is a big one on NBC between Liverpool and Spurs.
Join me for a nervy watch, eh?
237 Comments:
In the earlier kick-offs in the Championship, the league play has ended with Fulham and Bournemouth on top and Huddersfield, Forest, Sheffield Utd an Luton in the playoffs.
A lovely breakfast of a blueberry scone and banana has arrived at my shoulder.
Watford will likely be relegated at Selhurst Park today; they need a win or a draw.
Posh, Derby an Barnsley have been relegated.
I've switched over to the match at Turf Moor on the Cock. Teams in the tunnel now.
Good Morning, Bob. Power and wifi restored just in time for kickoff on Kentucky Derby day
The team news out of Turf Moor:
Burnley: Pope, Roberts, Collins, Tarkowski, Taylor, McNeil, Cork, Brownhill, Lennon, Barnes, Weghorst.
Subs: Lowton, Hennessey, Stephens, Cornet, Pieters, Bardsley, Long, Thomas, Costelloe.
Aston Villa: Martinez, Chambers, Konsa, Mings, Cash, Douglas Luiz, McGinn, Digne, Ings, Buendia, Watkins.
Subs: Sanson, Traore, Young, Nakamba, Coutinho, Olsen, Chukwuemeka, Iroegbunam, Feeney.
Referee: David Coote (Nottinghamshire)
The final L2 matches of the season about to kickoff prior to the playoffs
Morning, David - great to have you on the blog with me today - sorry to hear about your power and wifi struggles.
Exeter and Forest Green already promoted. Next season will be Forest's first ever in L1.
Thanks, Bob. Glad to be on board
We're away at Turf Moor - come on, the Villans!
Oldham and Scunny already relegated from the Football League for the first time in their history
How has your week been, mate?
COME ON VILLAINS ! Sad to say Burnley favorites on current form in this battle of Liverpool born managers
It's been good week. We had our first spell of really warm weather , but much cooler and overcast today. How has your week been?
I know supporters of the North London clubs will be rooting for Wolves because Chelsea may end up in an EL spot if they don't stop their losing run
That's shocking. It's sad to see some of these older established clubs going down. I'm particularly upset about Derby, who are on the same trajectory as Leeds. Both teams were big in the 70s with titles and cups but fell on tougher times.
I have to agree with you about this one - I expect a Burnley win, which will pile the pressure on Leeds and Everton to get something this weekend. We'll need the Foxes to bounce back from their Conference disappointment to hammer the Toffees tomorrow morning.
Swindon takes the lead at Wasdall and now up tp fifth place one point outside an automatic promotion spot
Hopefully the Toffees away day Blues continue. Pointless in the 2022 calendar year on their travels. Long may that continue
Oh yes, Danny, you beauty. Ings runs through and slips it home. No celebration as he once played for the Clarets.
WAY HAY! DANNY INGS PUTS VILLA ONE UP ON HIS RETURN TO TURF MOOR.
Congrats, Bob and to Villa for taking this seriously despite having nothing to play for
That's what I'm hoping, too. This is an excellent start.
Northants takes the lead at Barrow as does Sutton at Harrogate and Colchester at Jeff's lads
As things stand, Nothants with that lead now in the last automatic promotion spot. Bristol Rovers , Swindon, Jayne Mansfield, and and Port Vale in the playoff spots. Football League rookies, Suttoin out of the playoffs on goal difference behind Port Vale. Thatr's all subject to change
Pontus gives the Bees the lead vs Saints in a basically meaningless match
Great ball over the top there but Nick Pope swept up at the back. Villa looking threatening.
Niorthants two up at Barrow as they are looking to clinch promotion at the first attempt back to L1
Bees two up vs Saints
Salford takes the lead at Stevenage. Too little, too late
Two goals ion a minute for the Bees. Wissa with the second Bees goal
Our old pal Pontus Jansson has opened the scoring for Brentford. Wissa has added a second only moments later. 2-0 Bees.
In the SPL Celtic defeated Hearts 4-1. Celtic will be SPL champs if Rangers drop points vs Dundee United tomorrow. Otherwise Celtic can clinch the SPL on Wednesday with a draw at Dundee United
Not sure who Gareth Southgate will be watching this afternoon. Ollie Watkins perhaps? Nick Pope?
Bristol Rovers takes the lead vs Scunny And Jayne Mansfield on top vs Forest Green.
Lucas Digne picks up the first yellow card of the afternoon for a nasty one on McNeill.
I'm guessing Nick Pope. He's a regular in the England squad. Possibly Watkins ,Danny Ings , and Mings the Merciless
Bristol Palin Rovers two up vs Scunny and now fourth behind Northans on goal difference. Sarah's daughter may need t run up the scores to overtake Nothants for the last automatic promotion spot
Not exactly a Pre Saiss header off a Wolves free kick as Roman headed well wide off a free kick with a free header. I'm not talking about the Chelsea owner, but he was Russian too much with that header
Oh - Burnley get away with one. Pope makes a rash choice but Buendia isn't able to take it.
Oh - Watkins goes down in the box but the referee doesn't give anything.
Northants three up at Barrow and Bristol Palin Rovers and Northants fighting for the last automatic spot
Oh - a big chance for Weghorst. Put it wide!
Bob in the Villa end giving the ref stick????
Halfway through the first half - happy with things so far.
Salford tie it ups vs Stevenage. Swindon two up at Wasall
Burnley free kick now out left. Fortunately, it's won by Collins.
Bruno Lager not in the dugout because he has COVID. I thought that COVID had all but ended despite the new variant
Oldham takes the lead vs Crawley. Too little, too late
Oh - Weghorst again. Very close with the header. Phew!
Bob, I forgot to answer your Derby question. I read an article that life in L1 is the unknown. If they have a massive clearout then they may be down there for a while. Will have trips to Forest Green , Exeter, Accrington Stanley, Morecambe and Wise , and Fleetwood MAc. Not exactly what the supporters had in mind
Oldham two up vs Crawley. Two little, two late
Stevie G. looking the part in a very smart jumper over shirt and tie.
Wahay! Buendia with another!
WAY HAY! VILLA GO TWO UP. DELGHTED FOR YOU, MATE
That definitely helps
Mike Jackson's misery calls for Bob to do the Moonwalk.
Surely there are no Real Madrid style comeback heroics from Burnley after this.
Werner with a goal disallowed . Not sure why . He was onside and it looked like a tangle between him and Says. The Wolves defender rewarded for diving and a perfectly good goal disallowed. Why didn't VAR check. It's bloody useless
I answered your Derby question. Not sure if it was the answer you were lookin g for , but it might put things in perspective
Palace takes the lead vs the Hornets, who are surely being relegated. Second club going down on the managers return to his previous club
Port Vale tens the lead at Exeterand now Sutton as point outside the playoffs despite winning
GOAL 1 CHELSEA TAKES THE LEAD OFF A CORNER . A TONGUE N CHEEK VAR CHECK AS HE WAS OFFSIDE BY AS CHUINK AFTER THE BALL CAME OFF HIS TEAmmate for a tap ion from a foot out. I think this one is going to be disallowed
Perhaps Rudiger was off when the corner came off his heel to the Chunk
Wahay! Wilf Zaha has stuck a knife into Watford survival hopes. They need two goals now to survive even today. Woy has already announced that he'll be leaving.
Tranny takes the lead the Orient Expires, but two points outside thew playoffs.
The goal is disallowed still 0-0 at SB
Well this half could not have gone any better for Leeds fans. Keep it up, boys!
Hiring Uncle Woy was a big mistake. I think he's the retirement mode
Chelsea seem a bit unsettled. We have them at Elland Road in midweek, and I'm hoping that we can get something out of them.
Totally agree - I don't know why he would want the aggravation at his age.
The match at Selhurst Park doesn't really affect Leeds other than psycholgically, there's only one remaining relegation spot. I guess it's good news from that point of view
I think you have a better chance of points vs Chelsea than in the Dahlgren Derby.
No sympathy from Steve tomorrow? They're in the fight for th final CL spot
A trio of stoppage time minutes at SB
Did you say HAHA when Zaha scored from the spot?
We're coming down to half-time so I'm off for a refreshing shower. Back in a tick.
Barrow pulls it back to 1-3 vs Northants, but Norhtants five better on goal difference than Bristol Palin Rovers. Do you think Sarah is calling for election fraud due to that?
Enjoy mate. See you soon
Swindon three up art Wasall as they look to have clinched the last playoff spot. Looks like Sutton and Tranny will just fall short unless Jayne Mansfield loses vs Forest Green
It's 0-0 at the half at SB where Chelsea had what looked like two perfectly good goals disallowed
Second half underway from SB
Pretty much like for like and one Spaniard for another as the rarely played Saul Niguez on for Marcois Alonso. The signing of Saul from Athleti must surely bar considered a flop
That Sa was a nice save from Werner seconds from second half kickoff.
I'm back for the second half; happy to see that Villa are still 0-2 up.
Moutinho with a requisite booking as Peter Banks felt the challenge was anything but Cheeky. Not exactly a Tongue N Cheek response by Moutinho to Blue Peter
Make that 0-3 nil! Ollie Watkins with Villa's third!
Welcome back, mate. I've posted a few puns this morning that you may find amusing
WAY HAY! Delighted for you, mate
VAR checking to see if Chelsea will be awarded a pen . I think it was a less than Pre Saiss challenge a s a Chunk may have been taken from the Chelsea player's leg
Blue Peter Banks going to the monitor.I think Chelsea will be awarded a penalty
As I thought Blue Peter points to the spot for a Blues spot kick
Roman upset but the challenge less than Pre Saiss by a Chunk as he was Russian into the challenge
GOAL ! THE CHUNK GIVES CHELSEA THE LEAD FROM THE SPOT AS HE SA SENT JOSE THE WRONG WAY
Penalty for Chelsea at the Bridge!
This is good news for United as Wolves will be eliminated from El contention with a loss and a United raw at the AMEX. Not good news for the two North London Clubs
There was a lot of speculation before the match about Lukaku's future at the club. Apparently now that Chelsea's season is about over (bar the Cup Final), TT will be giving The Chunk and others on the bubble like Christian Pulisic a chance to prove themselves useful to the club.
GOAL ! THE CHUNK AT THE DOUBLE WITH TWO GOALS ION THE SPACE OF A FEW. THAT SA WAS A NICE FIN ISH PAST JOSE
I don't think that either Arsenal or Spurs had a realistic chance of catching the Blues. They're battling for that last CL spot.
Poor clearance by Connor Coady and Puli past to the Chunk for a well placed shot
Wow - he's on fire!
Your link must be several minutes behind . Amre my comments giving news before you receive it?
Agreed, Bob. the ownership change has helped by Chunks.,
Spoiler alerts???
In terms of what you mentioned about third place Leeds win tomorrow and a Pool win today sure will help Chelsea clinch third place
I think that might be the case, mate.
In L2 a battle for the last promotion spot. Bristol Palin Rovers now up by a Barber Shop Quartet vs rock bottom Scunny and now only there behind Northants on goal difference. Two early second half goals
We're not exactly Cock a Hoop about the links being behind
I can't really expect a win for us tomorrow against Arsenal at the Em, but a point would be a tonic. I expect Liverpool to take care of Spurs this afternoon. In reality, that big North London Derby will settle matters.
Forest Green ties it up at Jayne Mansfield. Forest green now top of L2 ahead of Exterer on goal difference.
Agreed, Bob. I won't be around for the North London Derby because Melanie graduates that morning. Will probably be sweltering in the heat and humidity that we're now not used to
Well, the way I look at it is that The Cock has allowed me to watch every Leeds match live this season. That wouldn't be the case otherwise. I remember the days when we just got the telly match and otherwise we were following on the text.
I remember some sticky graduation ceremonies in Florida.
If Villa end up winning at Mike Jackson's lads that will call for you to celebrate by doing the Moonwalk
Agreed, a few years ago we could watch all our teams for free until the Cock arrived. Still better than not being able to watch our teams
Forest Green have equalize against Mansfield Town; they'll go up as champions as things are.
Twenty minutes left here - no way back for Burnley. I had this one as a home win for Burnley, so this is a massive result.
Hwang Chung Tonight on for Pedro Neto and A Pre Saiss change as Roman is NOT Russian off as he's replaced by young Chiquinho who is still young chick
If Leicester can do a job for us tomorrow against Everton, there can be no damage one at the Emirates.
No joy for Ashley Barnes today.
Just to let you know Forest Green's home ground is the New Lawn. That means our back yard will be their home ground next season where Derby County will be one of the visiting teams.Your thoughts?
Nice close range reflex block by Mendy from Hwang Chung Tonight today
Your old mate Cashley coming on now.
Then Jose Sa does turn a round a near post shot from Kovacic
Hornets down to ten meant as Kamara sent off from s second booking. Not exactly a photo op for Uncle Woy
Hornets season ruined by the stupid sacking of Xiscoi Munoz. They never recovered from that
Bristol Palin Rovers now five up vs rock bottom Scunny. Now only two behind Norhtants on goal difference for the final automatic promotion spot. As Dave says, goals count
Raul, in the Old Gold called for pushing Thiago the Old Silver.
Bees three up vs Saints
GOAL ! I'LL DRINK TO THAT AS DRINK COW PULLS ONE BACK FOR WOLVES
Nice Wolves break as Kovcic was tackled then young Chiquino did well to fin fellow sub Drink Cow. He cut inside Rudiger then scored with as rocket in the upper 90 from the D
No - it's a sad end for Woy at Watford.
WOW ! Bristol Rovers half a dozen up vs Scunny. Now only one behind Northans on goal difference, who may not go up despite winning
Crazy day in L2.Your thoughts?
I seem to remember a drink called a Purple Cow with vodka and Wyler's Grape mix that was popular in college circles.
Quite crazy. I can't get my head around it.
Crazy match at Jayne's house. Took a 2-1 lead vs Forest Green then a couple of minutes later Desmond.
Nice cow reference, mate. Well done
As Dave said goals count. Northants started the day in the final promotion spot and despite winning may be in the playoffs
You know, Soton may not be entirely safe even on 40 points if Burnley, Leeds and Everton notch a few wins.
Sutton two up at Harrogate. Sutton a point behind Jayne Mansfield for the final playoff spot. Will be in the playoffs in their debut season if Jayne loses today. Tense at Jayne's house
CRICKEY . Bristol Palin Rovers so thirsty to get promoted they go seven up vs rock bottom sunny. Now third, in the final automatic promotion spot ahead of Northants on goals scored. Dave says that goals count and in this case he's spot on
Burnley fans with heads in hands now - luv it!
Northans leading 1-3 at Barrow. Were three up and conceded one on the stroke of halftime. They will be kicking themselves.
This is a fantastic result for you. You need the Toffees away day Blues to continue ue. Pointless on their travels in 2022. You need that to continue
Northants fans with heads in their hands too?
Half a dozen stoppage time minutes at SB. North London supporters will be pleased.
A standing ovation for the Chunk as he's replaced by Kai the Guy
Max Cornet nets a consolation goal. Doesn't really matter much.
BUGGER! Max Coronet pulls ope back for Burnley. Not music to Bob's ears
I guess that's true, Bob. Too much of a difference on the goal difference
It's over at Turf Moor as Villa win 1-3 in the Claret and Sky Blue Derby
That's that - a lovely result for us, with Burnley going down 1-3 to Villa. It undoes some of the work they did last week.
Over to the Bridge for the last few moments there.
Werner wins a corner off of Connor Coady. Chelsea can run time off the clock
It's over at Barrow as Northans win 1-3. Despite that they drop from third to fourth place because Bristol Palin Rovers seven up vs Swcunny
GOAL DESMOND AT SB AS CINNOR COADY TIES IT UP FOR WOLVES
Oh my! Wolves have pulled off a massive come-back to dent Chelsea's CL campaign.
The Chunk not best pleased by that equalizer.
The move started deep in the Wolves half and culminated in a cross from Chquinho headed ion by Connor Coady who was up as a forward.
It finishes Desmond at SB
Next up, Brighton and United on NBC.
Wolvesremain eighth a pair of points behind Hammers for the Conference League spot and eight points behind United for the final EL spot
Watford are officially relegated - no surprise there.
Bristol Rovers were seven up vs Scunny. Stupid fans storming the pitch called the match to temporarily be halted but the match has been resumed.
Credit to Joey Barton if Rovers go up. Were 17th a dozen points outside the playoffs when he took over on New Year's Day and now ahead of Northans on goals scored for the final promotion spot as the match has resumed
Now in the eighteenth minute of stoppage time of that match
Now in the 19th minute of stoppage time as Joe Barton made pair of changes in the last minute to ruin Dave's afternoon
Now in the 21st minute of stoppage time and Bristol Rovers still seven up
Not sure how long the delay was at the Memorial Stadium, but Scunny had theirs several weeks ago
Now in the 23rd minute of stoppage time at the Memorial Stadium
It finally ends at the Memorial Stadium and Bristol Rovers thrash Scunny 7-0 and are promoted ion dramatic fashion as Joey Barton's lads are promoted in dramatic fashion. Thanks to those seven goals they Are promoted in dramatic fashion ahead of Northants on goals scored, who themselves are not promoted despite starting the day in third place and winning today
The final standings in L2 .
Promoted: Forest Green , Exeter , Bristol Rovers .
Relegated: Oldham and Scunny
Playoffs :Northants vs Jayne Mansfield and Port Vale vs Swindon
Joey Barton manager of the year? They were 17th on New Year's Day a dozen points outside the promotion spots and needed to win by five more goals tha northants today to be promoted and did exactly that
They're off from the AMEX
COME ON MAN UNITED!
We're underway at the Amex; here are the teams:
Brighton & Hove Albion: Sanchez, Veltman, Dunk, Cucurella, March, Bissouma, Caicedo, Trossard, Gross, Mac Allister, Welbeck.
Subs: Lamptey, Webster, Maupay, Lallana, Alzate, Steele, Duffy, Offiah, Ferguson.
Manchester United: de Gea, Dalot, Lindelof, Varane, Telles, McTominay, Matic, Elanga, Mata, Fernandes, Ronaldo.
Subs: Jones, Maguire, Lingard, Fred, Cavani, Henderson, Wan-Bissaka, Fernandez, Garnacho.
Referee: Andrew Madley (West Yorkshire).
Back with lunch. A roast beef sandwich, apple, and water
Looks like the same lineup that defeated the Bees on Monday
Of course the announcer would have to bring up the 6-3 loss at the Dell in the 90s. Graham Harry Potter was on the suns bench for Saints that day
BUGGER! CAICEDO GIVES SEAGULLS THE LEAD WITH HIS FIRST GOAL FOR THEM
Nice strike from just outside the box that took slight Nick but poor defensive header off a cross from Trossard then Solly March in May wanted the ball more and tha di d Telles us that after a blocked a shot a Seagulls goal was scored
a poor cross lads to the small Mata of a United corner
Shots do Mata as a long range shot deflected over for a corner
Cross from short corner headed out then a long range shot from Metic lands in Row T
Ralf not looking pretty in pink as he has words for Chris Armas
A small Mata of a United free kick as Trossard commits a foul
Hi Boys,
I am here for a just a bit... Typical United!
Trossard with a shot blocked for corner as the Seagulls won several tackles due to being more committed,
Welcome Dave. Definitely not a repeat of the performance on Monday
I have been listening to 5Live all morning....I almost prefer that to watching!!
They were all over the place....especially L2 stuff...unbelievable stuff!!!
Crazy end of the season in L2. The best way to put it is that Joey Barton's Bristol Rovers proved that goals do matter. I posted promoted relegated , and playoff teams for L2
Gotta go out and do the railing of the deck at half time
I thought of you as Joey Barton's lads were scoring goals like crazy. Northants will say Scunny refused to show up, but Northants couldn't add to their lead in then second half so they have only themselves to blame
I figured you kept on top of all that stuff
As I said, crazy stuff
It was great 5Live going to the Exeter and FGreen matches.... it was a see-saw inside a few minutes
Today is the coolest May day I have experienced since leaving England. Is it cool up in ENY today?
Scunny's average age today....20!!
It is cool and windy but importantly dry!!
Hi guys, sorry about this scoreline. I've just finished lunch and have to take my car out for its annual inspection. Plenty of time left for United to turn this one around.
Stupid fans nearly blew it for Rovers. I read the Rovers were seventeenth a dozen points from promotion when Barton took over on NYD . I hate him, but credit to him for an incredible turnaround. That's manager of the year stuff, in my opinion despite not liking him
