It's Crunch Time!
Morning, boys! It's crunch time in the Premier League, with several matches affecting both the bottom and the top of the league. We start at St. James' Park where Newcastle host title contenders Liverpool. That's followed at 10am by the relegation dogfight between Watford and Burnley. Finally, it's the big one for me - my beloved Leeds hosting table topping Man City.
Join me for the morning, eh?

Liverpool cannot slip up in the run-in and a trip to in-form Newcastle is a far trickier prospect than they might have expected earlier in the season. The Reds are buoyed by Jurgen Klopp’s new contract announcement and having one foot in the Champions League final after beating Villarreal in the first leg of their semi-final.
The teams gathering in the tunnel at SJP:
Newcastle: Dubravka, Krafth, Schar, Burn, Targett, Guimaraes, Shelvey, Saint-Maximin, Willock, Almiron, Joelinton
Subs: Darlow, Dummett, Lascelles, Ritchie, Manquillo, Wood, Murphy, Gayle, Longstaff
Liverpool: Alisson, Gomez, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Keita, Henderson, Milner, Jota, Mane, Diaz
Subs: Kelleher, Fabinho, Konate, Thiago, Salah, Jones, Tsimikas, Alexander-Arnold, Elliott
It’s a packed house and the teams are readying themselves in the tunnel. The weather is wonderful and so is the atmosphere. This will be a testing afternoon for Liverpool.
Newcastle get us underway - both sides wearing their traditional colors.
Newcastle really going at Liverpool from the off. They're full of confidence under the management of Eddie Howe, who has taken them from the edge of the dropzone to the top half.
Jota scampers up the wing and draws a fall. Early chance for the big boys to come up for a set piece.
Liverpool getting back into the groove now after a positive start from the Magpies.
Oh - Keita tries one from distance that isn't too far apart. Deflected out for what should have been a corner but wasn't given.
Luis Diaz has brought so much dynamism to this Liverpool side.
Oh - Virgil from the corner tried an acrobatic volley. Well over the mark.
Liverpool players are not getting a second to think when they receive the ball - a black and white shirt greets them within a second of their first touch.
Newcastle's only outlet appears to be a long ball over the top to St. Max.
GOAL! Nabby Keita picks up the pieces after a big James Milner tackle and weaves his way into the box to finish. Great team goal.
0-1!
Newcastle were protesting that tackle by Milner but the replay shows that he got all ball in his challenge on Fab Schar.
Schar is still on the deck following the challenge by Milner but it is fair to say the former England midfielder got the ball. Another huge moment in the title race.
Good Morning, Bob. Just woke up.Here to join you for the matches today.
Probably rooting for the Toon, to help ruin Pool's quadruple hopes.
St. Max has a go from distance - his first real sniff at goal.
Milner fouls Guimares in a promising position for the Toon
Morning, David - how are you this weekend?
Doing well, thank you for asking. How are you so far
Interesting turn to SJP for Milner while Shelvey will want to do well against his former club. His career seems to have revived since Eddie Howe arrived
Yeah, it's been a productive week, so I'm looking forward to a relaxing morning watching the footer.
All the matches in L1 currently being played . It's the final match of the season for L1 heading in to the playoffs
Yes, Shelvey has been in good form, but it's been the introduction of Guimaraes that has turned this side around IMHO.
Oh - Mane with a big chance there. Found Dubravs instead of the net.
Not sure what we will do . Elizabeth still ot feeling well. We want to a nearby car museum yesterday afternoon because she was starting to feel better, but then woke up this morning with a continued sore throat. We were planning to go to a car show later today
That was a blown break. Mane OH Mane . Thought Pool were going two up.
I'm surprised that the regular season for L1 will end at the conclusion of this match
Agreed. With the money pumped no to the Toon, they can now attract top players like Guimares. Will they become the next Citeh?
Very tight at the top of L1, with Wigan, the Fake Dons and Rotherham all vying for top spot.
In the key matches Rotherham one up at Gils, Wigan 0-0 at Shrews and Fakes Dons one up at Argyle.
I'm sure that that's the plan.
Oh - Almiron scrampers through, rounds Alisson and finishes. Flag goes up.
YIKES! Thought Almiron had tied it up. Nice one touch passing then Almiron rounded Alison,to score but was called offside quite late
Not A Big Club leads Pompey 2-1 and Accring ton Stanley two up at Real Dons with Black Cats one up at Morecambe and None Too Wise
Oh - great ball in from Hendo and Jota with a powerful header that Dubravs had to tip over.
Dub does well to tip over a header from Jota off a cross from Hendo.
Corner headed away then a long range shot from Milner well wide
Joelinton picks up a yellow card for a little nibble on Luis Diaz. Jota takes offense and gets a yellow as well for some pushing and shoving.
Very top at the top of L1. Rotherham , top ahead of Wigan on goal, difference, +36 to +35/. Fake Dons one pointt behind those two. Won't know who goes up till the final whistle
Not a Biog Club and Black Cats look set to join what could be f Fake Dons ion the playoffs.. Wycombe in the last aspot a point ahead of Argyle, who now trail 0-3 vs Fake Dons
Not a Big Club lead Pompey 3-1
Wigan take the lead at SAhrews. Now two points clear of Rotherham and three ahead of Fake Dons. Look like being L1 champs
Accrington Stanley three up at Real Dons
Pool one up at the half
Half-time arrives and Liverpool are half way to another big win in their title campaign.
In L1 Motley Crewe rock bottom being joined by Donny Trump and the Real Dons who had already been relegated. Gils in the last spot on e down vs second placed Rotherham. Gils one point t behind Fleetwood and well behind on goal difference. Fleetwood 1-1 at Bolton. Gils will need a come from behind win vs Rotherham to survive.. Two pintle behind Morecambe and Wise who would go down with a Gils win, Fleetwood win, and a loss. Morecambe currently one down vs Black Cats. May just survive in their first season in L1.
We're back underway at the SJP - Liverpool have taken top spot in the Prem for the moment. Scousers will be hoping that my beloved Leeds can turn the title race around by getting something from Citeh later on.
All Liverpool pressure now - Newcastle just about hanging on.
Joe Gomez goes into the book for an obvious tug on St. Max.
Hi Boys
I have been watching the match and listening to the L1 Finale
as well already showered....didn't bother to shave!
Free kick chance for the Toon
Liverpool have a chance to swing one in now.
Morning, Dave - welcome!
Shelby to take against his old team....straight into the wall
Players complaining with each other... these players are such babies
Jamie Milner is time wasting after taking one to the head from that free kick.
I am so torn this season
I don't want the Quadruple
I don't want Liverpool to get to 20-20
I don't want City to win back to back titles with Haaland coming...and win more than 3 in a row
I don't want City to win the CL
I don't want Chelsea to win another Cup
What a disastrous season!
I get that, mate. Not the best season for either of our Uniteds.
Newcastle are carrying out some good work on the right flank but they have no one to cross to. Maybe it’s time for big Chris Wood ...
Oh - Mane should have made it two!
Mane with a chance....hits it wide
Back from walks to see that it appears that I didn't miss too much
Fingers crossed that you are still ahead of Burnley by the end of the day
Gopopd Morning, Dave. I had looked up at the updates in L1 during the first half, but plenty has probably changed during walkies
If Poomwin the quadruple band the Toffees get relegated would that be a quintuple for the Reds?
Your beach buddy is on 5Live right now
Big Chris Wood starting to warm up.
Sorry if Pool win would that be a quintuple
Morning David. How does you guys feel today?
That's my hope. If Watford can get something at Vicarage and Chelsea can wallop Everton tomorrow morning, it won't matter what we do.
My beach buddy or David's?
Don't be giving anything else to Liverpool!!!
Bob's Beach Buddy
Wigan two up at Shrews and Fake Dons four up at Argyle , who will miss out on the playoffs unless they score five without reply
Chris Wood comes on to provide a bit more muscle up front.
What - Freddie Ljungberg?
Everything City and Pool do is lovely, sensational...out of this world
You got it
Morning Dave. I'm doing well. Elizabeth woke up with a sore throat. She wants to go to a car show with classic cars today. It's from 8 Am to 4 PM. Nice weather, but I'll be here for the matches
Mo Salah and Fabinho about to come on.
Salah on for the yellow card boy
Mane comes off just after picking up a needless yellow card.
Hendo off as well.
Wombles already down, but still showing flight as they pull it back to 3-4 vs Accrington Stanley
I probably have to do some errands this morning
Jon asked me to play golf this afternoon
Great clearance from Target or Salah would have been on target
Gils need to tie it up vs Rotherham to be safe and be replaced by Fleetwood Mac who are losing 2-1 at Bolton. If that happens Fake Dons would replace Rotherham in second place
Wigan three up at Shrews.
Mo Salah with an immediate impact.
Looks like Not a Big Club vs Black Cats in a battle of big clubs by L1 standards , in the playoffs. The other one looks like Fake Dons vs Wycombe as things stand
So, Wigan will be L1 champs?
COME ON YOU TOON!
Yes Wigan William be L1 champs uno;ess they blow a three goal lead
That sounds like a fun afternoon. Where do you play golf?
Key match is Gils vs Rotherham with Rotherham one up and Gils in the last spot. If Gils tie it up they're safe and Fleetwood Mac would be relegated. Fake Dons would be second instead
We might go to the outdoor car show. It's nice weather now for outdoor activities
That would be a BIG showdown with between two BIG clubs
Owls and Black Cats.....real history
Chris Wood.... misses an one on one...late flag anyway
Chris Wood put through and his close range shot well blocked by Alison as the offside flag goes up
Oh - Chris Wood was put through by St. Max but it's a poor finish from the big man and then the flag goes up. He's a shadow of the confident striker who scored hatfuls for us.
Burton equalize Wycombe but Wycombe still in play offs
Bob loves hostelry lessons, LOL! Owls haven't been in the top flight for 22 years. Not a Big Club currently
Thiago on for Milner
Big goal at the bottom
Fleetwood tie it up at Bolton
Fleetwood safe right now
Coming down to the last ten minutes - anything could still happen but you fancy Liverpool to hang on from here.
Wycombe now a point clear of Argyle's;e sweater in the last spot. Argyle four down vs Fake Dons
That is Ant or Dec....I guess it is Dec
Golfer Lee Westwood there too
That is a huge goal. Gils now need a come from behind win vs Rotheram to survive. Have a far inferior goal difference to Fleetwood Mac
I still consider Wednesday a bigger club than a lot of teams in the Premier League
Bigger club then city rivals too
Fake Dons FIVE UP Argyle Sweater. Wycombe would have to lose by several to fall behind Argyle on goal difference
Not a big club.
Owls bigger by history, but not in the present . Have been out of the top flight for generation. They used toe a bigger club , but won't actually be bigger un til they're back up in the Prem and established
Oh - Luis Diaz nearly seals it. Could only find the side netting. I thought Dubravs got a touch.
Sheffield Wednesday are a big club like Preston North End are a big club - historically. Totally agree with David.
Bolton now lead Fleetwood Mac 3-2. Relegation race back on between them and Gils
Bolton score against Fleetwood to go 3-2
Fleetwood still staying up but no wiggle room
Like the Tangerines too. How is a club big if they haven't been in the top flight in 22 years
If Giuls tie it up Fleetwood Mac would go down instead if they lose
Fake Dons helped out at Argyle by being a man up since first half stoppage time. Scott Twine with a quadruple for the Fake Dons.
You two always agree with each other about this...so be it
I think there is a difference between Preston and Wednesday
Ground, fan base are two differences
Wednesday have been a good side and a bad side in recent years
Cup Finals, finishing high in the Prem
Stadium hosting semi finals
Now it's Liverpool just hanging on.
I wonder if Toffees fans hate the quadruple talk more than the Two Dave's . Going down in the same season would really be rubbing salt in their wounds
Oh - Salah nearly in there - should have used his right peg.
Salah almost in... ran out of room.... take a shot with your RIGHT foot....you're a professional
I would agree with you about Wednesday any day of the week if they would return to the Prem and stay up. Otherwise I'm agreeing with Bob
I'm sure that this has got to be agony for Toffees fans, with Liverpool romping it domestically and in Europe and Everton facing a relegation to a league that is not easy to get out of.
Total nightmare for both Toffee and Red Devil fans!
Wednesday 4-1 up vs Pompey...I think they fell behind early
Not a Big Club leads Pompey 4-1
Newcastle can't keep onside....do they know the rule!
I think the match vs wigan in midweek contributed to fatigue today. Still sorry they're losing
Rotherham has scored a second and are being promoted and Gillingham are going down
Rotherham two up at Gils
Rotherham going up and Gils down this late in the match
Just so thrilled they put on that show in front of my Aunt Janet!!
Pompey.... beat both promoted teams very recently.... should be up there!!
Tractor Boys four up vs Charlton. Too little, too late
Luis Diaz wins a free kick in a great position and that should be that.
Pompey and Tractor Boys hopefully in the promotion race next season
That is it of Liverpool.... then win again
I am off to do some errands and walkies
I'll return
Agreed. Definitely tile a great show for your aunt
Cheers, Dave. Enjoy
Fabinho curls one well over and the ref will blow up in a moment.
Liverpool's title hopes continue then and they will hope that we can get something at Elland Road later on. I'm off for a quick shower.
It's over and Pool win 0-1 at SJP
BUGGER! More talk of the quadruple
AT 10 AM the big relegation is Hornets vs Burnley is on USA. Villa vs Canaries on CNBC
I guess we're rooting for Hornets despite Burnley being huge favorites..The match at Villa Park not as important , but Canaries would go down with a loss and Burnley win today
In L1 Wigan up as Champs and Rotherham promoted as runners up. Rotherham a point ahead of Fake Dons.
the playoffs:
Fake Dons vs Wycombe and Not a Big Club vs Wycombe
Relegated Clubs: Gils , Donny Trump, Real Dons, Motley Crewe.
Heartbreak for Gils as Fleetwood Mac stayed up ahead of them on goal difference. It was always going to be tough today for Gils vs Rotherham
I'm off to shower too.
Correction in the playoffs. Not a Big Club vs Black Cats
I'm back from the shower and looking forward to this relegation dogfight.
A delicious bowl of oatmeal has arrived by my chair. Yum!
Norwich will be relegated if they lose at Villa and results elsewhere go against them.
I love it that when they show the dropzone, Leeds aren't in it!
Back from a refreshing shower too. I think I'm going to watch the matches on USA and CNBC on the PIP
Already kicked off at Villa Park and now from VR
We're away from Vicarage Road then. Come on, Watford!
Correct about the Canaries going down. They're down with a loss and Burnley win at VR. I'm watching both matches and it would be a miserable return to Villa Park for Dean Smith
Sounds liker a delicious brekkies. Too warm for that here. Enjoy, mate
It's been all Hornets early doors. You need a Hornets win for sure
League One 2021-22: in summary
Promoted Wigan (champions), Rotherham.
Playoffs Wycombe v MK Dons, Sunderland v Sheffield Wednesday.
Relegated Gillingham, Doncaster, AFC Wimbledon, Crewe Alexandra.
Still in the 40s here today. It's supposed to warm up a bit later in the week.
Good away support for the Clarets at VR today. Hoping they'll have a sad drive back up north later on.
Sorry mate. You won't be pleased to hear our weather. Upper 70s for the high today.. It will be upper 70s and low 80s all week with lows in the 50s. Spring is here and we've had the windows open most days
Yes! The Hornets strike first!
Agreed, Bob. You need a Hornets win
That's alright - I like a cool spring. I don't want it to turn to summer quite yet.
WAY HAY! I missed it wile typing so I'll rewind
Lovely finish from James Tarkowski there - goal of the season?
Looks like Burnley were given a taste of their own medicine. Corner headed out then Hornets won some tackles . Cross from Kiko made it to the back point. Shot off the bar then an OG by TArk
Alpha Romeu has driven Saints to a lead vs Palace
If Hornets win, Canaries Cannot be relegated today
Watford up to 25 points now, while Burnley are stuck on 31. Perfect scenario for us.
Oh - Kucka nearly in there again. Come on!
Glad the we weather is working out for you. WNY does have pleasant Summers. We have pleasant Springs and Autumns .Much better than South Texas
Joao Pedro now shoots over off a long ball from Ben Foster
Oh - Route 1 from Foster and Joao took it down well. Watford looking dangerous.
Bob, Burnley playing as if they've never heard of the long ball. Is that true?
Oh - Brownhill fizzes one just wide of the mark.
I can't believe that Sean Dyche has only been gone a month and they've forgotten that lesson.
Dwight McNeil down for Burnley. They can ill afford to lose him off a bad start
This is Mike Jackson's third match as interim for Burnley.A win and a draw so far. This is their first time trailing under him
Oh - Collins completely miscues and Joao Pedro was nearly in there again.
I don't think Mike Jackson will be doing the Moonwalk at the half. Will be shouting as if the whole Jackson five is screaming at them!
BOOM BOOM, MATE!
He will tell them that they're playing more like Janet. Sound about right?
Oh - LUFC Academy fizzes a cross over but Weghorst couldn't quite get to it.
With Aaron Lennon and playing and Mike Jackson in charge wouldn't hat be the Beetles and Jackson Five colaborating?
Boom boom indeed!
Teesiders one up vs Potters, but still seventh a pair of points behind Evil Blades.
Cherries one up at Ewood Park. Forest 0-0 vs Swans. That puts Cherries second five points ahead of Forest and Terriers.
Watford reverting to type now, playing on the break through the speed merchants.
Cheers, Bob. Thought you would like that
Oof - off the post!
OH! Hornets nearly score directly from a corner . Came off the post
Forest take the lead vs Swans and Teesiders two up vs Potters
PENALTY BURNLEY! CISSY CALLED FOR A FOUL ON DWIGHT MCNEIL ON A SOLO RUN. WAS THAT FOUL OUTSIDE THE BOX?
VAR checking. I'm guessing to se if it was outside the box. Definite foul
PHEW! Inches outside the box.
Phew! Craig Pawson gave a penalty but it's been reversed to a free kick outside the box.
Swans tie it up at Forest
Dwight McNeil hits one straight into the bottom of the wall. Lovely.
