A Very Big Afternoon!
Afternoon, boys! My nerves are starting to kick in as we approach kick-off at Selhurst Park. It's a very big afternoon for us. Tonight's match is likely the easiest fixture that my beloved Leeds have left in the season, so a point is the minimum that we need today. The pressure has been piled on by Burnley's win against Wolves yesterday and the knowledge that they play Watford next weekend while we have Man City away. A point would put us on 34 points with five to play and three points ahead of Burnley and five ahead of Everton who play Chelsea at the weekend.
It'll be fascinating to see the kind of side that Jesse Marsch puts out today. I wouldn't be surprised if he plays five across the back and two defensive middies in a very un-Bielsa effort to scrap out the point. Palace are a very dangerous side on the break, so committing players forward as we've typically done this season, might be counter-productive.
Come on, you Leeds! MOT!!

The coverage has started on USA with the panel emphasizing how important this one is for us.
The team news out of South London tonight:
Crystal Palace (4-2-3-1): Guaita; Ward, Andersen, Guehi, Clyne; McArthur, Gallagher; Eze, Ayew, Zaha; Mateta.
Subs: Butland, Tomkins, Olise, Kouyate, Hughes, Schlupp, Benteke, Edouard, Kelly.
Leeds (4-2-3-1): Meslier; Ayling, Llorente, Cooper, Dallas; Klich, Phillips; Raphinha, Rodrigo, Harrison; James.
Subs: Firpo, Koch, Klaesson, Struijk, Bate, Gelhardt, Cresswell, Greenwood, Kenneh.
Referee: Darren England (South Yorkshire)
I'm a bit surprised by JM's selection tonight, as I expected a more cautious approach. Palace are a dangerous side on the break, so I'd thought that he might play five along the back or Koch alongside Phillips. Instead, it looks like a fairly standard back four with then Phillips in front of them along with hard working Matty Klich. Going forward, we've got Harrison out wide left, Raph on the other side, Dan James up front and Rodrigo in the hole.
Good afternoon, Bob. Here to join you on a Springy day and to provide positive vibes for Leeds.
COME ON LEEDS! MOT!
Trooper and I are here instead of joining Elizabeth and Jacquelyn who are going about in the neighborhood , testing a bird spotting app. Lots of them chirping about. I can hear them because the windows have all been open since 10 AM
Don't know if you heard ,but Oldham became the first former Prem club top be relegated from the Football League when they lost 1-2 to Salford on Saturday , and Barrow and Stevenage won. It happened in disgraceful fashion as the last dozen minutes were played behind closed doors as Oldham supporters stormed the pitch protesting the ownership, but it sounds like they were trying to get the result overturned . Sound familiar? Thery had all season to protest the ownership and need to realize the tables don't lie
Leeds supporters might take heart from the recent record of Vieira v Marsch meetings- they coached either side of a nasty derby in MLS and Marsch’s RBNY side were clearly on top through the majority of those meetings. Might we get another 7-0 shellacking of Vieira’s boys today?
Afternoon, David - I appreciate your sacrificing a walk on a beautiful NC afternoon. This is the place to be for me, that's for sure.
These two managers know each other really well then.Sure hope so, but expect a much tighter affair. Palace have been in great form at home, but expect that it might be easier too get points against the Bees and Seagulls
I just hope to have survival wrapped up before the last match of the season.
That sure looks like as Bielsa type lineup. JM must be briefing the players against Viera style sides from those Gotham City Derbies.
Hi Boys
I mentioned your Oldham stat on the weekend.....they won us the Premier League in 93 with a victory at Villa Park
The panel is suggesting that the magic number might now be 37. That's more than I expect us to get. Very nervy end of the season.
Welcome, Dave - thanks for joining us. Very nervous about this one.
You and the LOBers are welcome here any time. The scenery and climate are spectacular this time of year
Good Afternoon, Dave. Good that you cane with us for most of the match
Thanks, David - I'd love to visit.
I had mentioned Oldham on previous threads throughout the season. I'm thinking of posting a thread perhaps Friday called Oldham , Where did it go so Wrong? I want to do some research. I think it's a combination of the boardroom and regional problems. That's all I have to say about that as I need to focus on Leeds.
I was thinking 36 points , but it may possibly be 37 . I think there's four points for Leeds to pick up, especially against Bees and Seagulls
I'm expecting a really tight match at Selhurst Park. Wouldn't be surprised to see a draw, which would be a decent result for Leeds.
I'll have to look at Everton's run-in again. I think they're more likely to drop than Burnley now.
Yeah - I would take a draw right now.
Teams coming out in South London
Best of luck mate
Agreed, Bob. Eight points for the Toffees in half a dozen matches a tough ask for the Toffees. They may have to win at the EM on the final match of the season to stay up. I wouldn't want to be in their shoes
Okay, here come the boys. Come on! MOT!
I second that. Wishing Leeds the very best
Palace fans signing a song about the Toffees players. "Bad All Over."
BOOM BOOM!
Blackburn two up at PNE in a local derby . Blackburn in seventh three points behind the Evil Blades for the last playoff spot
Let's hope it's "bad all over."
Off we go
COME ON LEEDS!
They're off from Selhurst Park.
COME ON LEEDS! MOT!
Away we go at Selhurst Park - come on!
It looks more like a cup match as both teams get stuck in from the start as if we're watching an NYC Derby
PNE pull it back to 1-2 vs Blackburn
MOT!
MOT being sung loud
Great support from visiting Leeds supporters. Unusual for the away fans to be the louder ones at Selhurst Park
OH! Off the line from Llorente. Palace nearly took the lead
Phew! Mateta got behind our back four and chipped Meslier but fortunately Llorente got back to clear.
We're playing too high a line for my taste and allowing Palace's speed merchants to get behind.
Based on the replay . Mateta got behind the Leeds defense off a long ball from Joe Ward and his shot wasn't nearly as close as I originally thought
Dangerous cross over but a good take from Meslier.
Looks like Bielsa ball early doors. Will JM adjust that?
Leeds may need to weather an early storm and then gradually take control
Based on Bob's mention of 37 points , Viuera may have told his players they're not safe yet and still plenty to play for
That's what I see, too. Of course, it's still Bielsa's side. I guess the only big change JM has made is the man-to-man marking that Bielsa favored.
AN Ayling foul on Zaha on a Palace break that started from a tackle Leeds won
Also a bit more long ball than Bielsa favored.
I thought JM had made Leeds more structured, but tonight has reverted back to the majority of players having free roles. It has its advantages and disadvantages
Agreed. Based on his Austria/Germany experiences, I think He brings a more physical style of play
Phew! Good Palace move ends with a decent cross but Zaha was well policed.
Free header from Zaha loops and goes straight to Meslier. Nice cross from Jordan Ayew off a pass from Mateta
Hard to believe Zaha is scoreless in nine meetings vs Leeds. Let's make it ten.
Yes, let's hope that streak continues.
Blackburn now lead 1-3 at PNE as they keep their slim playoff hopes alive
Sorry if I stray to other topics , but can assure you my priority is at Selhurst Park.
No worries, David.
Phew! Palace nearly in there for a first goal. Llorente just put off Mateta.
PHEW! I thought Mateta half given Palace the lead . Nice long diagonal wide right by Connor Galagher to Jordan Ayew and his pass in to the box missed by Meslier and just inches too long for the out stretched Mateta to giver Palace the lead
It's all very helter skelter so far, with very little structure.
Hope I get feedback if I post about Oldham. Think you all will find it an interesting read, but not today
The hectic play will favor Leeds as the home fans will expect early goals. The longer it stays 0-0 the more it favors Leeds
Oldham is a very interesting and tragic story. I heard a couple of their fans on the 606 on Saturday.
Cooper is penalized for a tackle on Gallagher and Palace can knock a free kick in.
Mini Cooper upset about being called for a foul on Connor Gallagher, but I think it was late and mistimed.
I don't think that was much of a foul
Thankfully the free kick was headed away
Agreed Bob. I guess the lesson is that Some Prem clubs could become the next Oldham if they're not careful
Nearly a good break through Dan James.
Zaha well defended. Leeds players would do well to know that he's easily provoked even though he has improved on that this season.
Then Harrison with a shot blocked on the break led by Dan James
Yeah, I was trying to explain the implications of an Everton relegation to an American guy who's adopted Liverpool. I said, "you might not see a Merseyside Derby for a while."
Mini Copper needs to "drive " Zaha crazy
Well, we've reached the half-way point fo the first half. A bit fortunate to be goalless but I'm happy with that.
Bit of argybargy now between Klich and Zaha. Cut it out!
It would end sixty consecutive years of top flight Mersey Derbies. Would Pool fans want the Toffees relegated , knowing that the special occasion of Mersey Derbies would go bye bye? Would the rivalry simmer down?
I haven't seen Raph involved very much yet.
Did Bielsa like Argie bargy?
Jack wins a corner. Small claim for a penalty.
Nice run by Jack Harrison then the President wins a corner off General MacArthur, attempting to relive him of his command
Harrison gets by a man and wants a pen....will VAR look.... I know we said the Everton incident wan't a pen but I bet Salah would have gotten one....would Liverpool have gotten that pen
Oh - Coop got his head on it but it was a fairly routine save.
OH! Header from Mini Cooper bounces then goes straight to Guaita off the corner
Fair point, Dave.
I missed all the action yesterday , but sounds like the Toffees frustrated Pool as their 18% possession suggests they played really defensively
Oh - Dallas had a go but it was blocked by Ayew.
Powerful shot Kliched off of Jordan Ayew, who is down for his troubles
Yeah - Frankie Lamps clearly went out with the game plan of frustrating Liverpool. Everton players were taking an age to take every throw and goal kick.
I would say so far so good, but wonder if Bob agrees.
Great break there through Raph but Ayling's cross was picked off.
Zaha goes down again after Ayling goes in late. Dangerous position for the free kick now. Mark 'em up!
As much as I dispise Lamps, if the Toffees go down Lamps can't take all the blame. This has been a gradual decline and there board has been part of the steady decline. Other than last season's 8th place finish by Ancelotti they have underachieved. It shows what a great manager Ancelotti is. Otherwise the past several managers have struggled
It's finally cleared out but I can barely watch these free kicks go in.
Great defending by Leeds after the free kick was cleared. Leeds have eliminated careless mistakes that were common in Bielsa's final matches. That's why results have improved
Everton shouldn't be as bad as they are. They should be where Newcastle or Wolves are.
Now Kai fouls Zaha . Those fouls need to stop
Another free kick in and Mateta meets it. Straight into Meslier's arms.
Agreed about the Toffees . They have been horribly mismanaged. it's hard to convince me they have worse players than Burnley
Nice move there, with Jack finally winning a corner. Come on!
Jack Harrison wins a Leeds corner
Rodrigo heads well wide off the corner
This is not Raph's type of match, but he will need to adjust because he should expect these matches for the remainder of the season
Nice defending by Jack Harrison as he wins a free kick when trip[le teamed deep in his own half
Luke Ayling is having a torrid time with Zaha this evening.
Sorry, I am busy doing stuff around the house...I'm still watching...MOT
I think Leeds have improved on the basics since JM took over.
You're right that things are tighter at the back under JM. He's clearly been working on that.
No worries, Dave - it hasn't been that great a match.
No probs, Dave. I think you're doing better than Oldham by far.
JM having a chat with Robin Koch now - I wonder if he'll be tempted to add him as an extra layer of cover.
To be honest the match is going as I expected considering what's at stake. I think both managers would;d take a draw. That would put Palace at 28 points. I would be shocked if the Toffees reach that total
The fourth official seemed to have seen something there between Zaha and Raph.
I wouldn't be Koch a Hoop about bringing him on as he seems to have a mistake in him every match. Perhaps I'm thinking of Robin from the bridge app Elizabeth and Jacquelyn have been using
Leeds doing fine with none of my comments
Yeah - you called this one.
So far, so good, mate. A draw would still be a good result for us tonight.
According to Lennon, Raph not sdoiung well because it's all helter skelter. I don't mean Aaron
It's all getting a bit bad tempered right now. We could use the half time whistle.
Not sure why Paddy is complaining at the fourth official. I haven't seen a reason for him to complain
Agreed about the halftime whistle
Players are getting very chippy.....grow up!!
Nasty one there on Rodrigo. Yellow card for Andersen.
Nasty foul by Andersen on Rodrigo. Fortunate to only be booked
in to a minute of stoppage time
Most of the tackles aren't as severe as players and commentators make out
It's going swimmingly for our Bob
Half time
I still want Leeds to get THREE points
The half-time whistle and not a moment too soon. It's been a bad tempered, niggly affair with not a lot of good football. But we're still in it at 0-0.
It's 0-0 at the half. Bob should be pleased. Not sure why the supporters are booing. It's been a competitive half
Blackburn now lead 1-4 at Deepdale in a local derby
Leeds need a win here to keep above Burnley past this weekend ....COME ON LEEDS
A WIN WOULD BE SO GOO
Teams out
We're back on at Selhurst Park. It looks as if Robin Koch is coming on for Matty Klich. I suspected that might be the change.
Robin Koch Kliched on presumably for defensive cover. Bob called that change.
The second half is underway from Selhurst Park
Raph almost in...come on...score
Ah - Raph had a chance to hit it with his right peg but he didn't fancy it. Wins a corner.
Raph gets to the corner but his looping header doesn't trouble.
Everton do have points out there to win
Chelsea H...prob L
Leicester A...Point?
Watford A.... win?
Brentford H...win?
Palace H...win?
Arsenal A...Loss
That could be ten points...39 points
Definitely failure by Mateta to yield the right of way to Mini Cooper despite the home fans protesting. Kate would call that a faux pas
I've got Everton winning at Watford and getting a couple of points here and there from Brentford and Palace. I have them finishing on 34 points.
More fights breaking out . This one between Joe Ward and Dan James
Geez....players are so testy!!
James in the book...how about the guy with the hands around the throat
Now Dan James is in a spot of bother. Yellow card for a striker's challenge.
I was thinking a maximum of 36 points by the Toffees. Dave , you make a good point but I don't think the Toffees are that good. Still as you state, we can't underestimate them
I have allergies. Would players head butt me for sneezing?
Struth...that was a back pass and the Palace player didn't go for it
Great tackle by Luke on Zaha. I don't know what Wilf is going on about. Corner.
The Toffees haven't won an away point since the day we moved in this house. That's why I have them losing at the KP and drawing at VR. I agree with the other results. I have them on 36 , but I've been mistaken on occasions
A fortnight from tomorrow we head out to the Lone Star State. It will be hot out there
It's all really pinball like right now. Making my heart hurt.
Your prediction would be right on track with the guys in the studio.
It's time for Joffy to come, probably for Dan James.
Goal difference will be a factor too. Hopefully the Toffees have heavy losses so they catch Leeds on goal difference. Will Steve's lads help Bob's on the final day of the season?
Leeds are attacking like Man U!
Toothless
You need Joffy in a Jiffy
We need to be positive about Leeds.
I have to go set up for my tutoring session
Take care boys
Best of luck mate!!
Nice pressure from us now.
And it's Sam Greenwood coming on, rather than Joffy. Dan James trooping off.
Cheerio, Dave - enjoy the tutoring.
Sam Greenwood on for Dan James. I know he was with the Gunners Academy, but don't know if it's an attacking change or a defensive one
Cheers, Dave. Great chatting . Have fun with the tutoring session
Was that an attacking or defensive change?
Jack Harrison with a shot blocked his teammate , Sam Greenwood. A shame
Not exactly the impact you were expecting Greenwood to make
Phew! I thought Zaha was in there.
We just need to be more deliberate about our build up and not give the ball away so cheaply.
Eze does it as it was when going past Greenwood then Bob went Koch a Hoop when Robin intercepted his pass
I wonder if this match is being played the way out is as there may be bad blood between the two managers going back to the NYC Derby. Am I overthinking this?
I wonder if Bob says haha every time Zaha gets tackled
Palace wins free kick off a foul from Dallas. That didn't occur in the Lone Star state
Phew! Zaha skinned Ayling again but Mateta couldn't finish off the cross.
Twenty five minutes or so to see this one out.
A winger for a striker as Mike Olise on for Jordan Ayew
Michael Olise on for Ayew now. Don't like it.
Oh - Zaha gets a shot off but Meslier did well.
I wonder if you have bitten all your nails to a stump
Blackburn have won 1-4 at Deepdale in a local derby to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. Now seventh , three points behind the Evil Blades with two matches remaining for both teams
Great tackle by Llorente there as Gallagher threatened. Corner. Mark 'em up!
Nice tackle on Connor Gallagher for a Palace corner
Bob will ben pleased that the corner was a waste as the ball went out of play and back in for a Leeds goal kick
Connor Gallagher with a shot blocked for a corner off a pass from Mike Olise
Gallagher's shot is blocked out for another corner. Mark 'em up!
Near post corner headed away
Now we're talking - Joffy to come on to replace Rodrigo. Let's go!
Joffy for Rodrigo , sadly, in more than jiffy
Palace haven't scored against Leeds this season. It needs to finish that way
Connor Gallagher goes on a run then wins a corner after Robin Koch with his requisite error gifted him possession
Joe Ward has a go but it's well wide.
Long range shot from Joe ward curled slightly wide but Meslier appeared to have it covered
Llorente booked for a tactical foul on Zaha in a less than safe possession
Llorente gets a yellow for a grab. Now a dangerous free kick. Mark 'em up!
Oh - the ball came back out to Gallagher who tried an acrobatic volley. Over the mark, thankfully.
Eze does out as his free kick was headed away then a long range shot from Connor Gallagher was about a foot over
Eze comes off and Schlupp on.
That was Eze's last touch as he's Schlupped off.
Oh - Joffy had a go there but it was smothered.
Oh - great double save by Meslier from Zaha.
Nice double save by Meslier from Zaha and Palace have a corner
After some heads tennis off the corner, it's cleared
